in clear sense...the flag will not help to preserve the pride unless we give it the respect it deserves.......by respecting it we show 1 aspect of our patriotism 2 the world an 4 us...respecting the flag is kind of a mental elixir...pretty much like worshiping a religious leader where v actually kneel in front of a clay statue...

Religious figures on the other hand have rather a spiritual appeal to human.

to give you an example, see Jesus, one extreme of humanity, love..kindness, tolerance, brotherhood. still with the sense of mortality resulting in sins.

take satan, indulgent in every human joy that was later purged as sins.

Lord Buddha, elimination of above sins that in turns make you linger, make you possessive, finally giving the Idea to give up on possessions. thus attaining ultimate peace.
God, ultimate nature, the indifference it shows to any species including human,
