Sri Lanka's Parliament has passed a law allowing the government to take over private businesses which are deemed to be underperforming.
Opposition parties opposed the Legislation, saying the move amounted to nationalization.
Authorities have listed 37 companies to be taken over under the law, titled "Revival of Underperforming Enterprises and Underutilized Assets."
Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa says the law passed Wednesday seeks to acquire government assets that had been leased out to the private sector under various conditions.
Opposition parties say the law will discourage local and foreign investment.
