I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the Staffordshire Hoard. Discovered by a metal decetorist - who is now rich - on 5th July 2009 in a field near the village of Hammerwich, near Lichfield, Staffordshire, it is the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver metalwork yet found. It contains over 3,500 items and is valued at £3.285 million.
With 11lb of gold and 2.9lb of silver, it eclipses, at least in quantity, the 3.3 lb hoard found in the Sutton Hoo ship burial in 1939.
The haul includes beautiful gold sword hilts, jewels from Sri Lanka, exquisitely carved helmet decorations and early Christian crosses.
The treasure dates from 675 to 725AD, the time of Beowulf – the great Anglo-Saxon poem.
