If set of words display the same formal properties, especially in their inflections and distribution, then we differentiate that as a seperate word class, or part of speech.

Normally we consider:

the meaning of the word
the form of the word
and the position of the word in a sentence
[FONT=Arial,Helvetica][SIZE=-1]
I think you can get more on this in English Grammar for Today by Leech and Hooganraad if my memory is correct.:D
