Transport Minister Kumara Welgama yesterday said that he would consult President Mahinda Rajapaksa on whether to import buses for the SLTB fleet from China instead of India. India’s Ashok Leyland had dominated the bus market in Sri Lanka.
Minister Welgama said that he had planned to import buses from China for the first time as the technology of Chinese motor vehicle industry had rapidly developed. Currently, the SLTB was importing buses from India’s Ashok Leyland which never supplied buses on credit he said adding that a Chinese company was willing to supply buses on credit basis.
The Minister pointed out that it was pointless to depend on only one bus manufacturing company forever.
Minister Welgama said, he would operate two double-decker buses in the Colombo city as a pilot project shortly. to provide a better transport service. "If the pilot project becomes successful, more double-decker will be operated," Minister Welgama said.
