Mirallas: Everton performances show I made the right choice

Everton striker Kevin Mirallas says his new side's performances in their first two games of the season show he made the right choice in snubbing a move to Arsenal.

The Toffees have won both of their league fixtures, with Marouane Fellaini putting in one of the most impressive performances of his career to beat Manchester United 1-0 at Goodison Park on the opening day.

He also spoke of his delight at making his debut for the Toffees during their 3-1 victory over
Aston Villa - and said his new teammates were constantly helping him out on the pitch.

“It’s great to come into a side that is in form,” Mirallas told the Liverpool Echo. “The team is playing very good football at the moment, and that reinforces the decision that I made to come here.He added, “I knew I was coming to a great club, and the fact that we are playing so well at the moment is great."

The Belgian international had a goal disallowed in his first game against Villa, but says he will not dwell on it - setting his sights firmly on winning a starting birth in David Moyes team.

“I don’t know whether it was offside or not,” he said. “But it certainly would have been a fantastic debut if that would have counted! Nevertheless, I’ll just try and keep going and try to score on Wednesday now.“The main thing is getting into the right places.

“Time out there on the field, getting into the rhythm of the game and getting used to the pace of the game, they will all help. That is the main thing. Minutes on the field are important.”

Shelvey looks to Liverpool fans for inspiration

Jonjo Shelvey believes the Liverpool supporters can be an instrumental asset to the team as they look to claim silverware in Brendan Rodgers‘ debut season in charge.

The midfielder pointed to the "electric" atmosphere created by the fans at Anfield as Reds twice took the lead against Premier League champions Manchester City, with only a late mistake from Martin Skrtel allowing Roberto Mancini’s charges to snatch a point.

And Shelvey feels the passion from the stands inspires the team on the pitch and makes Liverpool “a great club to play for”.

He told the club's official website: "When we scored against City, you couldn't even speak to the person next to you because the atmosphere was so good and the noise was so loud.

"It's good to have that behind you and ever since I have been here, the fans have been like they were on Sunday. That's why it is a great club to play for - the fans are electric.”

And despite the improved performance against City, Shelvey insists the team are taking it one step at a time as they look to negotiate their domestic campaign alongside the Europa League.

"I think it's really starting to come together on the pitch and I think the fans saw that again against City. But you've just got to take it step by step in this league and game by game,” he continued to explain.

"We won't look too far ahead - we've got Hearts on Thursday, so we've got to win that and make sure we get through to the group stages of the Europa League. Then we'll look ahead to Arsenal."

Shelvey revealed that it was a surprise to be called upon after just four minutes on Sunday but was buoyed by Rodgers’ decision to bring him on in place of the injured Lucas Leiva.

"The boss told me to be ready before the game and when I came on to the pitch, he just told me to keep doing what I had been doing during the preseason games," explained Shelvey.

"It's good that the boss sent me on and it gave me a boost in confidence. Hopefully I repaid the boss out there on Sunday. I aim to kick on from here.

AC Milan signs Niang from Caen

Caen has announced that M'Baye Niang has completed his transfer to AC Milan.

The 17-year-old has agreed terms over a three-year contract with Massimiliano Allegri's side and is expected to be thrown straight into the first team, despite his tender age.

"Caen would like to thank M'Baye Niang for what he brought to the club over the course of the past four years," a statement on Caen's official website read. "The young striker today [Tuesday] signed a three-year contract with AC Milan.

"Caen wish him every success with his new club and in his personal life."

Niang, a France youth international, made his professional debut in April 2011 and went on to make 30 Ligue 1 appearances for Caen, scoring five times.

Milan is likely to follow up the signing of Niang, if reports are to be believed, with those of Bojan Krkic and Nicklas Bendtner, as the club strives to plug the gap left by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Courtois: Chelsea game will be very special

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is eagerly anticipating the European Super Cup clash against his parent club, Chelsea, on Friday.

The Belgium international joined the Blues from Genk in the summer of 2011, and was immediately farmed out on loan to the Spanish capital.

Courtois impressed in his first campaign at the Vicente Calderon as he helped them to Europa League glory, and his temporary stay at Atletico was consequently extended by another season.

"It's special for me as the game is against my own club, but I play for Atletico now. It's me against Chelsea, and I want to win it," Courtois was quoted as saying on the official UEFA website.

Even though the glovesman wishes his Chelsea teammates all the best for Friday's game, the 20-year-old is determined to bring the trophy back home to Madrid.

"I keep my fingers crossed for them, for all my friends at Chelsea, and my Belgium team-mates who play there now.

"I wish them the best of luck. But I want to win the Super Cup. I hope it will be a good match, and may the better team win."

Courtois is one of a number of Belgians under contract at Chelsea, with Eden and Thorgan Hazard, Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne all having signed for the Champions League holders as well in recent years.

Hazard targets 'two or three' trophies this season with Chelsea

New Chelsea signing Eden Hazard has claimed he is happy with his start to life in the Premier League but insists there is still more to come from him as he eyes "two or three" trophies in his first season at Stamford Bridge.

The 32 million pound summer purchase from Lille has shown some scintillating early season form for the Blues - notching six assists and a goal in his first three games for the club - and hopes to continue his impressive start and land some silverware come the end of the season.
“At Chelsea you have to win every game. The objective is win, win, win. This season I think there are seven trophies to play for,” he told The Sun.

“We played the first one against Manchester City in the Community Shield. If we get two or three from the remaining six that will be great. Big clubs, whether it’s Chelsea or Manchester, are formatted to win.”

And the Belgian has been delighted with the way he’s adapted to life in the capital, insisting he is ready to make his own mark on the team.

“I’ve adapted very well to life in London. You’re always a bit overawed when you arrive at a club with so many big names,” he admitted.

“But then you tell yourself ‘They are people like me with two arms and two legs’. Of course, I have respect for the players who are already here but it is down to me to tread my own path.

“I had already changed countries when I went from Belgium to France, so I had made a similar step before.
“The game goes a bit quicker here, the reaction times are maybe a bit shorter, the challenges are stronger and the fans live for football, which is what I needed to feel.”

The former Lille man credits Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo in helping him settle into London life and praised the Italian’s approach to the game.

“Di Matteo’s philosophy is more about playing football than being physical,” he continued.

“We do a lot of ball work and pre-season was not as hard as I thought it would be. I was expecting it to be a lot tougher. But we’re well prepared because we’ve won our first games.

“What I hope for is to keep on enjoying playing and to be decisive like I have been in the first few games.”

Joaquin: Malaga wants to go far in Champions League

Joaquin is full of ambition following Malaga's qualification for the Champions League group stage, and is aiming to go as far as possible in European club football's top competition.

The Liga outfit recorded a scoreless draw against Panathinaikos on Tuesday after beating the Greek side 2-0 in the first leg of the play-off round, and the Spaniard was over the moon with his side's success.

"As for the group stage draw, we know that all rivals will be tough but we have qualified and are determined to enjoy the competition and go as far as we can," Joaquin was quoted as saying on the official UEFA website.

"It has been a complicated summer with many important players leaving the club. This result gives value to the work ethic, the attitude and the modesty of this team.

"It is very satisfying to reach the Champions League group stage through so much work and sacrifice. I am very happy that we are among the best of Europe."

Malaga will find out which teams it will face in the group stage on Thursday when the draw takes place.

Moratti: Maicon could stay at Inter

Inter president Massimo Moratti has made it clear that it is by no means a certainty just yet that Maicon will leave the club this summer.

The Brazil international is continually being linked with a move away from the Nerazzurri, and his agent revealed last week that Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid have all shown an interest in signing the right back.

However, even though a transfer seemed to be close after Maicon was left out of Inter's squad for their Serie A opener against Pescara, he could now stay put after all.

"Maicon? We'll see what happens. He could very well stay here," Moratti told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Inter chief then went on to praise new arrival Antonio Cassano in the wake of his debut in the 3-0 win over Pescara.

"I liked him a lot against Pescara. He showed the right spirit and put in an intelligent performance. He was all about the team. Let's hope he can keep this up."

Inter is currently preparing for the second leg of its Europa League playoff against Vaslui on Thursday.

I was frozen out at Juventus, claims Elia

Eljero Elia has voiced his dismay with the way he was treated during his spell at Juventus in 2011-12.

The Netherlands international joined the Turin giants from Hamburg last summer, but was largely ignored by head coach Antonio Conte and featured only sparsely during his one season with the Serie A champions.

The 25-year-old therefore opted to leave the club for Werder Bremen earlier this summer, but the move only materialised after he had made a big sacrifice.

"Every player was entitled to a new Ferrari to a 200,000 euros bonus after we won the Scudetto. However, Juventus forced me to renounce that right before they allowed me to join Bremen," Elia was quoted as saying by Sport Bild.

"The coach never spoke to me. He did not utter a single word to me all year. He completely ignore me. I have never ever experienced anything like that. It was very frustrating for me."

Elia made his Bundesliga debut for Bremen in last Friday's 2-1 loss against titleholders Borussia Dortmund.

Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar confirms QPR move

Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar has confirmed he will leave the Serie A club to join QPR.

The experienced shotstopper has spent the last seven years plying his trade at San Siro, in which time he has won five league titles and one Champions League.


And the 32-year-old is keen to bid farewell to the Inter supporters ahead of his move to Loftus Road.

Speaking to Brazilian network Rete Globo, Cesar said: "I will leave Inter. I want to thank everyone for these seven wonderful years. I would like to be on the pitch before Inter-Roma to hug all the fans.

"I choose to join QPR because I think will play more than at Inter and Premier League is watched worldwide".

And, although admitting that the opportunity to join QPR was an unexpected one, Cesar has revealed his excitement at the prospect of a new challenge and playing in the Premier League.

"I am a bit surprised, but I am delighted to have been given the opportunity by QPR to come to London, learn English and play in the Premier League," Cesar told Sportv News.

"It all started during my summer vacation, when Inter suggested that I reduce my salary."No player in my situation would have done that - I am not a hypocrite and I can talk openly about this."It became a tough situation for both parties. I then spoke to my representative and I thought this was a good choice."

Tottenham was also thought to be monitoring Cesar’s situation, but are now close to sealing a 12 million pounds move for Lyon keeper Hugo Lloris.

Falcao: Fernando Torres is one of the best strikers in the world

Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao has taken time to praise Chelsea attacker Fernando Torres ahead of Friday's European Super Cup in Monaco.

The Spain international has impressed in the opening stages of the 2012-13 campaign after a difficult first 18 months at Stamford Bridge, and the Colombian believes the former Atletico star is one of the very best in the game.

"Torres is a great striker, one of the best in the world. He has scored some fine goals in his most recent games," Falcao stated to EFE.

"I admire him for all that he has done for football. He is a player I have been keeping tabs on throughout my career."

The former Porto star then looked ahead to the clash with Chelsea, and stressed that Atletico do not fear their opponents.

"Chelsea are a great team and you have to respect them. However, we do not fear them. They have some excellent players who could make the difference, but we have to focus on our own performance.

Fiorentina closes in on Manchester United outcast Berbatov

Dimitar Berbatov is on the verge of joining Fiorentina from Manchester United after flying out to Italy on Wednesday, Goal.com can confirm.


The striker is understood to have agreed personal terms with the Serie A club ahead of a move reportedly worth 5 million euros, which will be paid in three installments.

The Bulgarian will undergo a medical before signing a two-year contract with an option for a further year to end a summer of speculation over his future.

Berbatov was desperate to leave United after falling out of favour at Old Trafford and finding himself down the pecking order behind Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez.

The 31-year-old, who was top scorer in the Premier League two seasons ago, cost United a club record 37.75m euros when he joined from Tottenham in 2008 but leaves for a fraction of that fee with just a year remaining on his contract.

West Ham, Zenit St Petersburg and Dynamo Kiev were among the clubs to express an interest in the former Bayer Leverkusen man, who made just 12 Premier League appearances last season, scoring seven goals.

Honigstein: Practice should make perfect for Podolski at Arsenal

Lukas Podolski appeared happy and relaxed after his Premier League debut, despite the 0-0 draw with Sunderland. “All those big names, Arsenal, the crowd singing my name at the warmup: it was so enjoyable to wear the shirt today,” he said beaming outside the Emirates changing rooms.

His sense of pride to be playing for the Gunners seemed to be the overriding emotion on the day, but there must have been a sense of disappointment, too. Strikers know that every game without a goal can be turned into a question mark behind their names. Especially if they’re new to a league.

One goal-less game at Stoke City later, more question marks have turned up. Cynics might say they now easily outweigh the number of points that Arsenal have amassed so far.

But there are certainties, too. One of them is that a Robin van Persie-shaped hole will continue to loom large in Arsenal’s forward line. “It doesn’t matter who you bring in for Robin - you can’t ask anyone to be as good as him,” admitted Mikel Arteta.

Arsene Wenger’s lineup on Sunday reflected that dilemma. Where there was one Van Persie, there are now two strikers: Olivier Giroud with Podolski behind him, pushed out to the left when Arsenal was defending. On paper, both could combine to offer the all-round game that Van Persie provided by himself. The goals, the runs, the passes.

Sources close to the Germany international feel that playing in close proximity to the Frenchman is a more promising set up than Podolski leading the line as a No.9 or playing as an out-and-out winger. In other words, the Stoke game was, in theory, the best combination.

It gave Podolski the ability to drop deep and touch the ball often, and at the same time a license to come inside. Arsenal’s formation, in turn, was a bit lop-sided when it was in possession. Gervinho would attack from the far right, but the German spent a lot of time 'in the hole' near the left side of 'D'.

A powerful run that was only stopped by Robert Huth and a couple of blocked shots or efforts that drifted wide offered glimpses of a kind of directness that has perhaps been missing from Arsenal’s game plan in recent years. In that narrow respect, he’s already contributing. But of course it’s goals and/or telling assists that ultimately matter, and here he’s fallen short so far, along with the rest of the side.

Wenger, interestingly, suggested that Podolski wasn’t quite ready physically. But the bigger problem seems to be a general lack of understanding in the final third. It’s to be expected, to some degree. Arsenal play like strangers because that’s what they are after just a couple of games with each other. Surely they’ll all improve over time.

But then you look at how well and instantly Shinji Kagawa and Eden Hazard have both settled and wonder if that’s not too superficial an analysis. Could it perhaps be that Giroud and Podolski find it so hard because of the personnel around them?

Van Persie’s brilliance last season looked more and more impressive in the light of the Sunderland game, when first Podolski and then Giroud seemed at a loss to figure out the movements of Gervinho and Theo Walcott, two wingers who are as talented as they are unpredictable - even to themselves, it seems.

Santi Cazorla, in contrast, played with composure and authority throughout. But the Spaniard’s marauding runs also squeezed the space in which Podolski, isolated at the front, was dropping in to try and fill. Abou Diaby also attacked the very same zone. Things became congested as a result, and a similar problem was noticeable against Stoke, too. Podolski was trying hard but at times he simply looked unsure where he should go next.

Wenger will do well to coach some simplicity into Gervinho’s and Walcott’s games; Giroud and Podolski, making sense of their enigmatic moves, might indeed take longer. Van Persie, it shouldn’t be forgotten, was not an overnight success at the Emirates, either.

A better spatial organization in the center, on the other hand, should be more easily attainable. Wenger was once known as one of soccer’s pioneers for drilling specific attack patterns into his players while many European (and certainly most British coaches) were still happy to tell their charges to simply 'express themselves' on the pitch.

Thus, the key for Podolski’s success lies firmly in London Colney. Now that the improvising genius of Van Persie has departed, Wenger needs to replace the question marks with sentences in big, bold letters. Everyone has to be told exactly what to do and where.

Podolski has already shown in his performances for Joachim Low’s Germany that he responds well to very specific practice sessions. It will be fascinating - and surely satisfying, in the end, too - to see his considerable talents properly utilized at a club for the first time in his career.

Mourinho: Carvalho's career is over if he stays at Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has insisted that Ricardo Carvalho does not have a future at Real Madrid, and has urged his compatriot to move on.

The center back moved to the Santiago Bernabeu from Chelsea in the summer of 2010 and quickly became an important first team member. However, the 34-year-old lost his starting berth amid a string of injuries last season, and Mourinho is eager to offload Carvalho this summer.

"Ricardo is not part of our plans for the season," Mourinho said at a press conference. "It is up to him whether he wants to continue playing football or stay at Real Madrid and meet his contractual obligations and practically end his sporting career.

"A lot of teams are interested in Ricardo. He is a quality player and there is interest in him. There are various teams from different leagues who have shown an interest in him."

Carvalho, who has recently been linked with a move to QPR, has a contract with Madrid until June 2013.

Bojan: It's an honor to wear the AC Milan jersey

Bojan Krkic has voiced his delight with his imminent transfer from Roma to AC Milan, and feels honored that he will be wearing the Rossoneri jersey this season.

The 22-year-old is expected to complete his move to San Siro on Wednesday, and the former Barcelona man is determined to prove his worth at the 2011 Serie A champion.

"It is an honor to wear the Milan shirt. I promise that I will give my everything for this club," the Spain international told reporters. "All the sales that Milan have made? Milan are still a strong team, and I want to make the most out of this opportunity."

The forward was also being linked with a move to ambitious Liga side Malaga in his homeland, but he is pleased to have joined Milan instead.

"Malaga? I have heard true and false things in the media, but I can only say that I am happy to be at Milan."

Bojan could make his official Milan debut in the away game against Bologna this weekend.

Arsenal say Walcott talks are ongoing

Arsenal is bracing to lose yet another big-name player after reportedly failing to convince Theo Walcott to sign a new contract.Walcott has turned down a deal worth around 4 million pounds-per-season ($6.3 million) and could be sold before the transfer window closes on Friday.

An Arsenal spokesperson told ESPN that reports that talks have ended are "all speculation. Negotiations are ongoing."When asked for coment, Walcott's representatives told ESPN they had "no comment to make."Walcott reportedly wants to continue negotiations over what is said to be a 75,000 pounds-per-week ($118,000), five-year contract to replace the one that expires next summer.

The 23-year-old wants a better deal -- nearer 100,000 pounds-per-week ($158,000) according to reports -- and should he and Arsenal fail to reach an agreement in the next 48 hours, it could signal the end of his six-and-a-half-year stay in north London.Walcott has been valued between 12 million and 15 million pounds ($18.9 million and $23.7 million) and has already been linked with Liverpool this summer.

Reports suggest Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City are also interested in adding the England winger to their ever-increasing ex-Gunners contingent after seeing a bid for Swansea's Scott Sinclair rejected.

Walcott's loss would be viewed by many as another huge blow to Arsenal, who lost captain Robin van Persie to Manchester United earlier this month.

Alex Song quickly followed by joining Barcelona, who signed Cesc Fabregas from the Gunners last summer. Arsenal also saw Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri move to City.

Walcott was one of Van Persie's main providers last season as the Dutchman notched 37 goals, with Walcott himself scoring 11.

Walcott, who joined the Gunners from Southampton as a 16-year-old in 2006, started their home game with Sunderland on the opening day of the season but was left on the bench for Sunday's match at Stoke, eventually coming on after 72 minutes in what was their second straight goalless draw.
