Perez: Ronaldo does not want to leave Real Madrid

    cristianoronaldofrown20120902_576x324.jpg

Real Madrid chairman Florentino Perez has claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo does not want to leave the Spanish giants, and that he is unhappy for other reasons.

The Portuguese star refused to celebrate either of his two goals in Los Blancos' 3-0 victory over Granada on Sunday, saying he was 'sad' with a 'professional issue' at the club.

"If he wanted to leave he'd have said so when the transfer window was still open," the 65 year-old told Marca

"There are other reasons behind it."

Ronaldo himself took to Twitter to dispel rumors that his dismay was due to a desire for a new contract.

"That I am feeling sad and have expressed this sadness has created a huge stir," he wrote on the social networking site.

"I am accused of wanting more money, but one day it will be shown that this is not the case," he added.

Messi eyes 'dream' success with Argentina

    207803hp2.jpg

Lionel Messi has revealed that it is his dream to become successful with Argentina, ahead of his side's 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Peru.

The diminutive forward is regarded as arguably the best player of his generation, having enjoyed enormous acclaim at club level with Barcelona since his debut in 2004.

However, he has come in for criticism following his failure thus far to inspire Argentina to a major trophy - something the superstar is desperate to put right.

"I have had the good fortune to win trophies with my team and on a personal level," he told reporters. "I am missing one with the senior team. That is my dream. It is a difficult road to the World Cup."

The Albiceleste currently sit third of nine teams in the South American zone after three wins, one draw and a defeat in their first five games, and Messi insists his country must approach the next two matches with a positive mindset.

"Paraguay and Peru will be two difficult opponents, all the games in qualifying are difficult," he added. "The qualifiers are very tough and we must keep growing as a team. Against Paraguay we must have the ball and attack because we know they are a hard team.

"We are getting results and we can work calmly. We hope to continue like this in our next two games. You cannot drop points at home, and we want to play well, but the most important thing is to win. We will try and play well and excite the fans."

Nonetheless, Argentina seems to have turned the corner under new boss Alejandro Sabella, with five straight wins for the team, including emphatic friendly victories over Brazil and Germany.

Messi has played a key role in the recent run, recording hat tricks against the Selecao and Switzerland, and he attributes his improved form to the country's passionate support.

"I do not know if this is my best year with the national team," he remarked. "We have won a few games in a row and it is a while since we managed that. I played well at the Copa America, then there were some ups and downs, now I am enjoying how it is going.

"I appreciate the support of all Argentines. With our results they are getting behind the national team more. We are happy that they are with us in every game."

Argentina hosts Paraguay in Cordoba on Friday, before traveling to Peru on Tuesday.

Rodgers keen to protect young Liverpool star Sterling

    207230hp2.jpg

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is wary of asking too much, too soon of Raheem Sterling despite the young winger's impressive form so far this season.

The 17-year-old has shot to prominence in recent weeks, starring for the Reds during preseason before starting two Premier League games against Manchester City and Arsenal.

Sterling was called up to the England Under-19 squad earlier this week and despite believing that he has the ability to play for the Under-21 side, Rodgers was pleased to see that the former QPR academy player would not be rushed to a higher level.

"I think with young players you have to be careful," he told reporters. "They can be elevated above their station too quickly. That is a part of it in this country. They have one good game and they get elevated into superstar status.

"You then see them at 23 and 24 and wonder why they are not superstars any more. I spoke to Trevor Booking on the thoughts of where the FA believes Raheem is at. I said, in my opinion, of course he has got the ability to be in the Under-21s. But I believe in many ways it is right for him to go with the Under-19s. He was involved with us on Sunday.

"He has met up with England squad now and traveled to play in Germany. It then allows him to come back and recover well before our next game at Sunderland."

Despite Sterling's exciting performances, Rodgers urged fans to remain patient with the teenager as he continues to develop.

"It is all about individual needs," Rodgers continued. "It might look great on the back pages that he is involved in the Under-21s but the reality is that this is a kid who has made great strides over the last few weeks. He was absolutely fantastic through preseason.

"You have seen his quality, courage and attitude in games – it has been fantastic. But, for the moment, let's just stay calm."

Rodgers is not the first member of the club to express this sentiment, with Glen Johnson also stating that the squad was helping to make Sterling feel welcome in the first team.

Sammer: Robben is an individualist rather than a leader

    202567hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich director Matthias Sammer believes that Arjen Robben is more of an individualist than a born leader, but feels the Dutchman could have an important role to play for the Bavarians.

The winger recently stated that he is ready to take on more responsibilities at Bayern, and although the 44-year-old sees Bastian Schweinsteiger, Philipp Lahm and Manuel Neuer as the Bundesliga giant's three biggest personalities, he is adamant that the former Chelsea winger has a role to play as well.

"There are three types of players: leaders, team players and individualists. When you have to characterize Robben, he is really more of an individualist," Sammer was quoted as saying by Sport1. "He is definitely a player who can do something extraordinary for our team with his free spirit and his footballing philosophy.

"He knows how to behave in certain situations and knows when it's time to step up and speak his mind. So he does have leadership skills, too. Lahm, Neuer and Schweinsteiger are Bayern's three main leaders. These three should not be the only ones with a key role, though, but should also get other important players involved."

Robben joined Bayern from Real Madrid in the summer of 2009, and has since developed into a key player for the Allianz Arena side.

Van der Wiel: PSG can become as big as Real Madrid

    185161hp2.jpg

Gregory van der Wiel feels that Paris Saint-Germain has the potential to become one of the biggest clubs in Europe and challenge the likes of Real Madrid and other top teams.

The Netherlands international signed a four-year deal with the Ligue 1 outfit on Monday to complete his transfer from Ajax, and is full of ambition following his move to the French capital.

"Paris Saint-Germain can become as big a club as Real Madrid. They want to make it to the absolute top, win the Ligue 1 title and compete for top honors in Europe," Van der Wiel stated to Algemeen Dagblad. "I am very pleased to be part of this project. They are very ambitious and want to win trophies. I was looking for a new challenge and we can achieve something unique here.

"And it's obviously fantastic to play alongside a star like Zlatan Ibrahimovic."

Van der Wiel was also linked with a move to Newcastle United this summer, but the right back has stressed that a move to the Premier League side was never an option.

"I really wanted to play for a club in a big city. I don't know how serious they were, but I don't see myself living in the middle of nowhere in Newcastle. I am used to Amsterdam and really enjoy living in a big city. I have been in Paris for only three days or so, but I can already say that it's quite similar to Amsterdam."

Van der Wiel could make his official PSG debut in the home game against Toulouse on Sept. 13.

Germany has to completely change tactics, says Low

    193494hp2.jpg

Germany coach Joachim Low has stressed that the Nationalelf intend to utilize a more pro-active style of play in the upcoming 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

The Euro 2012 semifinalist impressed with quick counterattacking football in the past few years, but the former Stuttgart trainer is determined to take his team's game to the next level and play more dominant football.

"We will have to completely change our tactics – which used to be, 'if we have the ball we are active, if not we drop back'," Low was quoted as saying on the official UEFA website. "Our aim in the next months will be to play a high pressing game, even against attacking sides. We have to be more active when defending without the ball.

"Everyone has to play their part and this gives us quite a lot of work to do in training but we have to tackle this now. Before the European Championship there was not enough time."

Germany starts its 2014 World Cup qualification campaign with a home game against Faroe Islands on Friday.

Giroud not aiming to replace Van Persie at Arsenal

    204395hp2.jpg

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has insisted that he has not set himself the challenge of replacing Robin van Persie at the Emirates Stadium.

The France striker is determined to do things his own way after completing his move from Ligue 1 champion Montpellier for a fee of around 12 million euros.

Giroud has failed to find the target in his three appearances in the Premier League so far and warned that he could need time to adapt to the English game.

He was confident, however, that given time he would prove a success as one of three major signings made by manager Arsene Wenger during the summer.

"Everywhere I've been, I've needed some time to adapt, but in the end it's worked out well," Giroud told Le 10 Sport. "I'm a level headed person who needs something to aim for to move forward, but I haven't given myself the task of replacing Van Persie.

"I want to take my place, win over the Arsenal fans in my own way."

Sagna baffled by Van Persie and Song departures

    138680hp2.jpg

Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has expressed his frustration at the continued sales of the club's leading players.

Robin van Persie and Alex Song both left the Gunners during the summer, for Manchester United and Barcelona respectively, just a year after Cesc Fabregas, Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri had departed.

Sagna was particularly disappointed to see Song leave and admitted that, like the club's supporters, he did not always understand decisions made by the team's management.

"Everyone knew Robin was leaving," Sagna told L'Equipe. "But Alex? He's 24. He had three years on contract. I still don't understand. He's a huge loss.

"When your two best players go, you ask questions. Fans come up to you in the street and I understand their frustration. Like them, I don't understand everything."

Sagna went on to admit that he aspired to achieve what Nasri and Clichy had by winning the Premier League title with Manchester City last season.

"I'm the only starting player left from 2007," he continued. "In May, I watched City's parade on TV. I saw Samir and Gael lift the trophy. I want that."

The France defender will enter the final year of his contract in the 2013-14 season and when asked if Arsenal had spoken to him about extending his current deal he replied: "No, nobody.

    :(Zenit bid for United's Nani

    naniwoe20120524_576x324.jpg

Zenit St Petersburg have confirmed they are negotiating for the £25 million capture of Manchester United winger Nani.

The Russian transfer window closes on Thursday, and Zenit are determined to add a couple of big names to their squad, with Nani and Joao Moutinho their two top targets.

Zenit recently acquired Hulk and Axel Witsel for a combined €80 million, and the spending will not stop there if Nani can be tempted from Old Trafford.

The Portugal international did not enjoy the best of starts to the new Premier League season, turning in a poor display at Everton that saw him subbed and then dropped from the next game.

With United looking blessed for midfield options with Shinji Kagawa settling in quickly at the club, Nani could be tempted to move to Russia, particularly if it is to join countryman Moutinho.

Zenit general director Maxim Mitrofanov said on Thursday: "It's true we are negotiating for Nani and Moutinho, but Hulk and Witsel were our top priorities."

Should Nani leave, his final appearance at United will be Sunday's 3-2 win over Southampton, when he came on for the final 29 minutes to help inspire a comeback.

Clint Dempsey leaves Fulham with no regrets

    207606hp2.jpg

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Clint Dempsey doesn't like how he was represented by Fulham, particularly boss Martin Jol, as his summer-long transfer saga played out.

"Everyone has the right to their own opinion, but I put in some good work there, put in a good five-and-a-half years, and I'm happy with the job that I did there," the American midfielder said. "I think that you can't really question my heart. I put everything into every game and that's what I've always done my whole career. I'll look back at my time [at Fulham] with no regrets."

After months of being linked to a move elsewhere in the English Premier League and constant rumors regarding his relationship with Jol, Dempsey finally ended up with Tottenham in the hours leading to the transfer deadline. He had been working out alone with a Fulham trainer prior to making his exit.

Sources tell Goal.com that Dempsey and Jol had a rocky relationship since last season, but things got out of hand when rumors swirled that Dempsey pulled out of Fulham's Switzerland tour in early August. It got even worse when the coach publicly called out his star player for turning his back on the team.

"I'm disappointed with the way things ended and how I was portrayed in the end, but that's in the past now," Dempsey said. "I just want to thank the fans for five-and-a-half great years and thank the chairman for taking a chance on me from MLS. I'll always look back at my time there with a smile on my face."

Dempsey was out of Fulham's lineup for the club's first two games of the season and hasn't played in a competitive game since last June, a streak that will likely end Friday when the U.S. national team takes on Jamaica in the first of two World Cup qualifying games between the teams in a five-day span.

He is happy to be moving on with his career.

"It's good to have that behind me now and now looking toward the future," he said. "I'm excited about the qualifiers coming up with the U.S. team but also excited about the opportunity of playing for a team like Tottenham and working hard and trying to break into that lineup."

Dempsey was one of England's biggest transfer targets leading to the deadline after leading the Cottagers with 23 goals in all competitions last season. He had always made it clear that he wanted to move to a Champions League-caliber club and Liverpool had expressed interest but a deal couldn't be reached.

Tottenham scooped up Dempsey in a surprising move late Friday. Spurs finished fourth in the Premier League last season, but missed out on a Champions League spot after Chelsea won the competition last year to take England's last qualifying spot.

"It's definitely been a roller coaster, you know, up and down," Dempsey said. "It definitely was a stressful time because you don't know where you're going."

Javier Hernandez not worried about calls for Oribe Peralta to bench him

    134700hp2.jpg

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica -- Javier Hernandez dismissed any belief that he is uncomfortable with coming off the bench for Mexico in Friday's World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica.

The Manchester United striker was recently dropped down in his club's depth chart following the signing of Robin van Persie. Hernandez has appeared in just one Premier League game this season, totaling 20 minutes on the pitch amidst the suggestion that Mexican NT manager Jose Manuel de la Torre might drop Hernandez in favor of Oribe Peralta, who is on a good run of form for club and country.

Following his gold medal at London 2012, Peralta was also named the Liga MX's MVP after a strong Clausura 2012 season helped Santos net the league championship.

"That's a topic for the manager, [Oribe's] a great player and if I get to play alongside him, we're going to give it all on the pitch," Hernandez said on Thursday.

"There's 11 players in the starting lineup, seven go to the bench and the rest watch from the stands. The competition will always be there," admitted Hernandez. "To me, it's great when the manager has a hard time choosing [who starts]", he continued.

In San Jose, de la Torre is expected to trot out a 4-2-3-1 lineup where Hernandez would presumably be preferred. However, Peralta's hot streak might oblige the former Chivas manager to start him over Chicharito, or go to a 4-2-2-2 with both strikers getting the nod.

Hernandez also referenced the rash of injuries that affected Mexico's midfield, with Cruz Azul's Pablo Barrera joining Mallorca's Giovani dos Santos on the disabled list.

"He's a player who I've spent some time with here in the national team, it's bad that these injuries have happened because that's something you don't ever wish upon anyone, health is such an important thing. But, let's hope that Pablo can recover soon," Hernandez said.

Cruz Azul's Javier Aquino or Monterrey's Angel Reyna are expected to fill in for Barrera at the Estadio Nacional on Friday.

Upon arriving in Costa Rica, Hernandez, who has 25 goals in 39 games with Mexico, noted that his team was not expecting a walk in the park on Friday. "It's a tough game. We're facing a complicated team in Costa Rica, but we expect to go out there and give it our best so we can take all three points."
