In a bid to stem illegal migrants, the Sri Lankan government is to sign an agreement of bilateral cooperation that will increase the quota for local workers in Italy.
The Cabinet has approved to sign an agreement on Bilateral Cooperation on Labour Migration with the Italian government based on a proposal made by the Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare Dilan Perera, Cabinet spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told media.
With the view of reducing the trend of illegal migration to Italy, the government has held negotiations with the Italian authorities and a draft agreement has been finalized to be signed by representatives of both countries.
The main features of the agreement include establishment of a Local Coordinating Office at the Italian Embassy in Colombo, the Italian government will assist in the linguistic and vocational training of Sri Lankan workers to suit the needs of that country and recruitment will be regulated by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment and the Italian Coordinating Office.
In addition, the Italian government will issue an annual preferential quota for Sri Lankan workers depending on the market requirement.
