Arsenal 1-0 QPR: Arteta spares Gunners’ blushes on Wilshere’s return

222781hp2.jpg

LONDON, England -- Arsenal marked Jack Wilshere’s return to action with a nerve-jangling 1-0 victory over 10-man Queens Park Rangers secured by a late strike from Mikel Arteta.

Arteta scrambled the ball over the goalline in the 84th minute following an afternoon of toil for Arsene Wenger’s side in which they once again failed to find their attacking rhythm off the back of two defeats in the last week and a stormy AGM on Thursday in which many supporters criticised the club’s strategy.

The result, which lifts the Gunners to fourth position in the Premier League, came thanks to a helping hand from QPR defender Stephane Mbia, who was sent off in the 80th minute after foolishly kicking out at Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen.

QPR manager Mark Hughes will now face increasing speculation over his future as the west London club remain rock-bottom in the Premier League with three points from nine matches.

The Welshman could do with a player like Wilshere, who made his first Arsenal start since May 2010 following 17 months dogged by ankle problems. The England international looked like he had never been away, skipping past challenges and injecting some energy into the Gunners’ play in the final third.

The rest of the team, however, were visibly lacking in confidence, with its movement static and decision-making suspect.

Those nerves were almost eased in the 10th minute when Aaron Ramsey got on the end of Bacary Sagna’s excellent cross. The Welshman’s header looped towards the far post, beating QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar only to bounce off the top of the crossbar.

Cesar then had to stay alert to deny efforts from Wilshere and Olivier Giroud from outside the penalty area but the visitors would have been happy to restrict the Gunners to hopeful shots from distance.

There were few signs of improvement immediately after the break. Cesar parried away Per Mertesacker’s header following a free kick from Mikel Arteta before Cazorla lashed over the bar from 12 yards when he should have at least hit the target.

The match swung in the Gunners’ favor, though, 10 minutes from time when Mbia needlessly lashed out at Arsenal captain Vermaelen as the pair competed for the ball by the corner flag. It was hot-headed, reckless, and the visitors could have no excuses.

Cesar brilliantly kept prevented an own goal from Samba Diakite with a full-stretch save but the hosts finally beat the Brazilian six minutes from time.

Giroud’s initial header was superbly saved by Cesar but the QPR defenders failed to react, the ball finding its way to Arteta, whose initial header hit the crossbar before he poked home the rebound on the goalline.

QPR responded positively and could have leveled in the dying stages, with Esteban Granero shooting wide before substitute Jamie Mackie was denied from point-blank range by Arsenal goalkeeper Vito Mannone in injury time.

Juan: Inter is aiming for the Scudett

    217923hp2.jpg

Inter defender Juan Jesus is full of ambition as he has set his sights on winning the Scudetto with the Giuseppe Meazza side this term.

The Nerazzurri currently sit joint third in the league table, trailing leader Juventus by four points, but the defender is determined to leapfrog the Turin giant before the end of the 2012-13 campaign.

"Are Inter in the hunt for the title? Yes, we always aim to be, this is a big club," the defender said in an interview with Sportmediaset. "Winning breeds success and it's so much easier when things are going well.

"First and foremost we're thinking about our next match, though. Let's play well, get the win we need and then we can start to think about our next two opponents. You win when you've got togetherness and we have a great squad."

Inter locks horns with Bologna on Sunday.

Di Matteo has no Torres concerns

    202501hp2.jpg

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has launched a passionate defense of his under-fire Spanish striker Fernando Torres.

The 50 million pound record signing for the Blues has scored six goals in 12 games this term with his team top of the table, and his boss thinks criticism of the 28-year-old is misplaced.

"I have no concerns about Fernando," the Italian told reporters. "He always works hard for the team and, whether he scores or not, he's always contributing. We can't just rely on one player, we want to share responsibility."

Share responsibility is what the club has done, with Torres netting this season along with the likes of Eden Hazard, Juan Mata, Oscar and even defenders such as Branislav Ivanovic and Gary Cahill.

Di Matteo has defended the Spaniard's all-round game, stressing that he is not just a goalscorer but also creates goals for others.

"Sometimes, he [Torres] gets more chances, sometimes less. But he's been scoring goals, he's been making goals, and we can't expect him to be scoring every game," the coach said. "He just had a difficult season [last year] but I think this season is completely different.

"He started very well, he's playing well, he's looking good, so I would rather focus the energy on now and the future. I think he's shown all the signs from this season. He's scored in the Community Shield, he's scored four league goals, he's scored one in the cup. So he's been scoring goals. But he's been making goals as well."

Muller: Bayern has not won anything yet

    221585hp2.jpg

Thomas Muller has stressed that Bayern Munich is well aware of the fact that the club has not achieved anything yet.

The Bavarians have won their opening eight Bundesliga games and have a five-point lead in the table over second-placed Eintracht Frankfurt. Nevertheless, Muller is not getting carried away following Bayern's perfect start to the season.

"The coach keeps on reminding us that we have not achieved anything yet and keeps us grounded," Muller stated to Bild. "We all realize that we haven't won the league yet, regardless of our perfect start. With the last two seasons in mind, we will definitely not get complacent."

Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was equally cautious as he pointed out that Bayern appeared to be on the way to Bundesliga glory last season before eventually having to settle for second place.

"We were in a similar situation last term," he said. "Yet we did not win the Bundesliga title then. We are not getting carried away."

Bayern is currently preparing for Sunday's league match against Bayer Leverkusen.

Julio Cesar: No regrets over joining QPR

    213910hp2.jpg

QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar has refuted suggestions that he regrets his decision to join Mark Hughes' side.

The Brazil international has played six times for QPR since arriving from Inter Milan over the summer, but has yet to finish on the winning side.

The west London outfit is currently rooted to the bottom of the Premier League but the 33-year-old insists he made the right choice and is focused on improving his performances.

"I am unhappy with my performance since I arrived here," he told The Sun. "But I'm not sorry about my choice to join QPR. I just want to show the supporters the Julio Cesar who played well for Brazil and Inter Milan. This is my dream.

"It's incredible that still we do not have one league victory. I am convinced we are not a bad team but bad luck has touched us."

Cesar also claimed he is settling into life in London with ease and compared the passion for football in England to that he experienced in South America.

"I love the atmosphere in the grounds, there is so much passion," he said. "The English fans suffer with their football just like any Brazilian or Argentinian.
"The sport is a religion here and that's why I accepted the challenge to play here."

Phil Neville: Everton would do anything to beat Liverpool

    137399hp2.jpg

Everton captain Phil Neville has revealed he would "do anything" to beat Liverpool in Sunday's Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

The Toffees go into the game six points ahead of Brendan Rodgers' side but lost three times to the Reds last term, including in an FA Cup semifinal at Wembley.

Neville, who began his career with Liverpool's other fierce rival Manchester United, has admitted the extent of his desire to get one over on the Anfield outfit.

"My wife knows that every time she arranges a Saturday night out it's based on what the result of that day's game is," he told the Daily Telegraph. "If we lose, we don't go out. Simple as that, I'm no good to anyone. And if we lose to Liverpool, she might as well cancel the rest of the month.

"Listen, you can't hide from the fact there's a lot of hatred between the two teams, we'd do anything to beat each other. That said, there's real respect too. You look forward to the games, but you can't actually enjoy them because there's so much riding on them."

The 35-year-old also explained the feeling of disappointment which comes with losing out in a fixture of this magnitude.

"You know it's going to be a battle, you know you're going to get unbelievable abuse, but what you fear is the losing," he added. "Winning's fantastic. But losing? We got beat there last season. It was terrible. You are letting your supporters down and you know this is the one that matters to them."

Giggs wary of Chelsea threat ahead of Premier League meeting

    212437hp2.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs has admitted his side faces a tough task against Chelsea, when it meets the Premier League leader on Sunday.

The 38-year-old hailed the quick settling in period enjoyed by Blues summer signings Oscar and Eden Hazard as the reason for the west London side's good start. The Welshman also acknowledged that the Red Devils will have to be at their best when they travel to Stamford Bridge.

"Sometimes new players settle in straight away and that seems to be the case at Chelsea," Giggs said, as reported by Sky Sports News. "They've got off to a great start this season, particularly in the league. We're going to have to play well if we're going to get a result.
"I don't know if they're the real deal but what they have got is that experience and the know-how of how to win a league. Obviously, having added to the squad like they have done, they're going to be right up there this season, no doubt."

Giggs went on to express his belief that Roberto Di Matteo's side will challenge for the title this season due to its "clever" attacking players and vast experience.

"Come the crunch, if they're there or thereabouts, they've got the experience like ourselves, like probably [Manchester] City now, to go all the way," he said. "I expect them to be up there at the end of the season.

"I think it is a different sort of Chelsea team. In past years they've had Didier Drogba's power and the runs through from midfield of Frank Lampard. We've always thought of Chelsea as a big, strong, powerful team. They've still got that but they've added the likes of Oscar and Eden Hazard, and Juan Mata is into his second season and coming along nicely. They've got clever players who can play in the pockets and make it difficult for teams."

Low: I never said I would quit in 2014

    192486hp2.jpg

Joachim Low has revealed he does not want to leave die Mannschaft in 2014, despite the weight of persistent pressure and expectation.

The former Stuttgart boss made it clear he has never said he will be leaving, even though his contract will expire in two years' time.

"I never said that I would stop in 2014. Do you know of such a statement?" Low said in an interview with Bild. "A contract extension is not currently up for debate. I have been here since 2004, I know everyone here well and in due course we will have a conversation about my contract, but in private."

The head coach also admitted Germany will learn a lot from the recent 4-4 draw against Sweden, where his side let a four-goal lead slip.

"Painful lessons against Sweden are helpful despite the pressure. We will learn from such experiences, to perform better in the future," he added. "I am focusing on the positive aspects of our game. The fact that we have won 22 of our last 25 qualifiers and drawn three is great, but it is still frustrating to let a 4-0 lead go to 4-4."

    Cole open to United switch

    soc_g_cole01jr_576.jpg

Ashley Cole will not rule out the possibility of joining Manchester United when his Chelsea contract expires at the end of the season despite a raft of interest from abroad, ESPN understands.

Cole, 31, will be out of contract at Stamford Bridge in the summer and with the club so far refusing to offer him anything more than a one-year extension - in line with their policy for players over 30 - the left-back is seriosuly considering his options.

It is believed that five European clubs have expressed an interest and made it clear they want to be kept informed of developments, with United thought to be one of them. ESPN understands that three of those clubs are willing to put a firm offer on the table. The England international would prefer to stay at Chelsea but while many believe a move to Europe will be his most likeliest of options, the player is refusing to rule out a move to one of his current club's biggest rivals.

"Ashley is cool, relaxed about his future and his contract," a source told ESPN. "He wants to stay at Chelsea, but there are no further plans for more talks. "Everyone at the club can see the sense of offering Ashley a longer contract as he is only just over 30, but until the owner relents there is little point in having more talks.

"As for Manchester United. Why not? Ashley hasn't made up his mind about anything, but there are offers from France, Spain and Italy, so he has a wide choice. You would need to ask him if he fancies going abroad or would stay in England. He won't be going to Russia though.
"There is nothing Ashley has said that would preclude going to Manchester United, but it's Chelsea where he wants to stay, so its really up to Roman Abramovich what happens next."

'Winning 25 points from 27 is difficult' - Vilanova

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has hailed the efforts of his players this season following their 5-0 win over Rayo Vallecano, which saw them move 11 points clear of Real Madrid in the Liga title race.

A Lionel Messi double, as well as goals from Xavi, David Villa and Cesc Fabregas ensured that the Blaugrana emerged triumphant after an uneasy start to the match.

"I've seen every game, and know first-hand how difficult it is to achieve a record of 25 points out of 27," Vilanova explained at a press conference. "We had very little possession in the first 15 minutes, but we always fought until the end. We deserve the points we currently have, but must also congratulate Rayo for their approach to the game.

"We took great comfort from [Sergio] Busquets' performance, while [Alex] Song played a great game in a more physical position.

"[David] Villa scored and we are as happy as he is. Today, we used [Martin] Montoya, and we are also very confident in [Marc] Batra. We are Barcelona, and trust our youth greatly."

Messi: Breaking Pele's record is the last thing I'm worried about

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has said that breaking Pele's record for goals scored in a single calendar year matters little to him compared to helping his team to collective success.

The Argentine netted his 72nd and 73rd strikes of 2012 against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, bringing him within touching distance of the Brazilian and Gerd Muller's historic tallies of 75 and 85 goals, respectively.

"Breaking Pele's record is the least I'm worried about," he told reporters. "We won at a difficult ground, and that was the most important thing."

The 25-year-old will be collecting his Golden Boot on Monday, after he finished last season as top scorer in Europe: "I want to thank my teammates, without them I wouldn't have been able to win the prize."

Another Blaugrana player to get his name on the scoresheet, Cesc Fabregas, believes his team's 5-0 mauling of Rayo was their finest display of the season.

"This was the best game of the season," he commented. "We are really happy with the excellent work we produced tonight in an intense encounter.

"We played really well in the second half. We knew we were going to suffer in front of the Rayo supporters, but it was a real party after our second goal, when we imposed ourselves."

Forward David Villa continued his comeback from a broken leg by opening the scoring with a well-taken strike, and was quick to announce his gratitude at getting the opportunity to play.

"I'm really happy to play 60, 65 minutes, get those under my belt and to have helped with a goal - that's important for a striker."

Allegri: AC Milan's issues are results, not performances

    222494hp2.jpg

AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri has come out in defence of his side's recent performances after the 1-0 victory over Genoa at San Siro on Saturday.

Stephan El Shaarawy's late goal ended the Rossoneri's run of three consecutive losses, but the host was made to work hard to bag all three points.

"I have always been relaxed as the team have put in strong performances," he told reporters after the match. "Criticism has been too harsh, considering what we have seen on the field.

"The situation at Milan is simply an issue of results, not performances. We could have scored in the first half, while there were a number of controversial penalty decisions.

"Overall, I am happy with the win. We secured this result in the difficult atmosphere surrounding us at the moment, and I am happy with the way the team has reacted."

Alexandre Pato made his long-awaited comeback from injury with his first start of the season, but was subsequently hauled off during the second period.

"I substituted Pato because he was tired," he confirmed. "He has barely played in the last few months, so it's impossible for him to discover full fitness straightaway.

"In general, he put in a good performance, and looked dangerous for us."

Mancini delighted with Manchester City's resolve after win over Swansea

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has hailed his side’s mental strength in beating Swansea City after its recent disappointments in the Champions League.

Following a 3-1 defeat to Ajax in midweek, the Italian revealed his eagerness to avoid any lasting damage to City’s domestic challenges – and the team was met by a chorus of boos at half time after struggling to break down a stubborn Swans side.

Mancini chose not to highlight his players’ slow start to the game, instead praising the Blues for persevering to grinding out a victory.

“In this moment after Champions League defeat it’s important we start to win quickly,” he told reporters. “[In the] first half [we played] so-so, [but] I think we were so tired. The second half we were getting better, we had lots of chances to score.”

Mario Balotelli’s arrival at the start of the second half gave a previously frustrated Carlos Tevez more freedom on the pitch, with the Argentine snatching his side’s eventual winner with a thunderous long-range strike just after the hour mark. Mancini spoke of his delight at the latter breaking his eight-game scoreless streak.

“[Tevez] played well,” the Italian added. “He played also well against West Brom, he worked hard for the team. He scored today and it was an important goal, I am happy for him.”

The game ended on a sour note, with defender Micah Richards stretchered off with a knee injury 10 minutes from time. With fellow right backs Pablo Zabaleta and Maicon already sidelined, Mancini is hopeful that the seven-day break before the trip to face West Ham could leave enough time for one or both of the injured duo to return to match fitness.

He added: “[Richards] has a problem in his knee, but I don’t know the situation. I hope [it is not bad] but I don’t know. [There is] no previous problem, he was tired because it was the third game in 10 games. We have one week we can recover, maybe we can recover a couple of players for the next game.”

Rayo Vallecano 0-5 Barcelona: Brilliant Blaugrana run riot in Madrid

    barcateamceleb20121027_576x324.jpg

Barcelona made it five wins out of five away from home as it dispatched Rayo Vallecano 5-0 at Estadio Teresa Rivero on Saturday to maintain its place atop the Liga standings.

David Villa opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a cool finish, but despite intermittent threat from the home side, Lionel Messi surged the Blaugrana further ahead with a thumping effort three minutes into the second half, his 300th senior goal for club and country.

Xavi ended the game as a contest when he struck his 50th La Liga goal in the 79th minute before Cesc Fabregas added the visitors' fourth goal almost immediately after, and Messi sealed matters with his second a minute before time.

Barca have now won eight of their opening nine games, and sit three points clear of Atletico Madrid, who square off against Osasuna on Sunday, while Rayo meanwhile remain mired in 13th place on 10 points.

With Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano all absent, Adriano was chosen to start in central defense alongside Sergio Busquets, whose vacated midfield spot was filled by Alex Song.

Paco Jemez was also forced to shuffle his pack at the back, as Rodri replaced the suspended Mikel Labaka, while Jordi Amat was ruled fit enough to start in defense.Rayo did a good job of unsettling the Blaugrana early on, forcing them into a few mistakes in possession and winning a succession of corners.

Fabregas avoided a potentially dangerous call when he tripped Leo Baptistao on the edge of the area, before the midfielder himself was then denied a penalty after being barged in the back by Cassado when attacking a ball into the box.

But Barca, despite its less than spectacular beginning, surged ahead in the 20th minute with one of its first real attacks of the game. Fabregas won possession in midfield and, spotting Villa’s run from the left flank, teed up the Spanish striker, who coolly slotted into the corner.Villa had an attempt at another a few minutes later, but after finding himself in space at the edge of the box, could only direct his shot low within the reach of Ruben.

Messi then sent a free-kick just wide, but Barca struggled to press home its advantage as the pressure from Rayo off the ball forced it outside of its tiki-taka comfort zone. In fact, the home side began to cause a few wobbles in the Blaugrana backline as the first half drew to a close.

Piti sent a half-volley just over the bar after attacking the ball on the edge of the area before Andrija Delibasic wasted Rayo’s best chance of the half, firing straight at Victor Valdes after finding himself with a clean run on goal.

Barca came out of the interval firing, though, and stormed into a two goal lead barely three minutes after the restart. Martin Montoya’s overlapping run was spotted by the driving Pedro, and the young right back squared to Messi, who thumped past Ruben from just inside the box.

However, Rayo looked to hit back quickly. Alejandro Dominguez’s cross was not properly cleared, leaving Javi Fuego with a clear shot that was well saved by Victor Valdes. Delibasic attacked the resulting corner at the near post, but could only flick his header over.

Valdes again denied Fuego from close range before Messi squandered a chance to put the game beyond any doubt after going clear thanks to a bad back-pass, but his lob over Ruben was well off target.

Barca put the game to bed with full time approaching. First, a surging run and cross from Alba was met with a fine finish from Xavi inside the area, who slotted expertly into the far corner in the 79th minute.

Fabregas made it 4-0 seconds after the restart, sidefooting Pedro’s center home, before Messi added a fifth in the 89th minute after rounding Ruben from close range to put the finishing touches on an emphatic win for Barca, whose near-perfect start to the season continues.

Ancelotti: PSG can thank Ibrahimovic for Nancy win

    222865hp2.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain coach Carlo Ancelotti says that his side has Zlatan Ibrahimovic to thank for its 1-0 victory over Nancy on Saturday.

The capital club failed struggled to take charge of the game at Stade Marcel Picot, but a 75th-minute strike from the Swede ensured that its unbeaten run continued.

"I thank Ibrahimovic. He is a fantastic player," the former AC Milan boss told reporters after the match. "We lost here last season, so this is an important win for us.

"This win will increase the character and personality of this team. The second period was better for us, as we played with more intensity. [Mathieu] Bodmer and [Adrien] Rabiot gave greater security to the team.

"[Javier] Pastore was not used to playing in midfield, which explained our early difficulties, but he did well once he moved behind the strikers, though things were difficult for [Jeremy] Menez tonight."

Ibrahimovic's 10 goals in just nine Ligue 1 appearances have helped propel his team to the top of the table, three points clear of second-placed Toulouse.

Nancy 0-1 Paris Saint-Germain: Ibrahimovic snatches victory in lackluster showing

    222839hp2.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain at least temporarily opened up a three-point advantage over Olympique de Marseille at the summit of Ligue 1 on Saturday evening as it battled its way to a 1-0 success against Nancy at Stade Marcel-Picot.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the match winner for the visiting side, finding the net 16 minutes from time with a terrific shot from the edge of the area. PSG certainly had not had things all its own way over the course of the encounter, with Lossemy Karaboue hitting the post for the home side early on.

Nancy’s early performance comprehensively belied their position at the foot of Ligue 1 as they looked effervescent and dangerous. Only three minutes into the game Jean Fernandez’s men offered their first major threat, with Karaboue’s drive from range hitting the inside of Salvatore Sirigu’s left post.

Several more long-range efforts followed for the home side but typically they were off target. When Massiado Haidara did work the Italy international, the shot required only a simple save.

PSG started to wake from its slumber following an exciting Javier Pastore run down the right, yet it would be Mamadou Sakho who first directly threatened les Chardons’ net with a forceful downward header.

This was quickly followed by a great opening for Kevin Gameiro, who was the recipient of a lucky break of the ball but who was superbly denied by Ndy Assembe.

Early in the second half, the vivacious Jeremy Menez created space superbly for himself before launching a shot high and wide from inside the box, and it seemed that the menace of PSG was fading as Thomas Mangani drew a routine save from Sirigu at the other end.

Then Ibrahimovic stepped forward. Nancy did not heed the warning of a stunning 30-yard drive that dipped over the top, allowing the giant Swede to battle his way into a shooting position at the edge of the box with 16 minutes remaining. He needed no second invitation and sent a fierce shot into the net.

In the last minute, a Romain Grange free kick was saved by Sirigu, but the Italian was not seriously worked as PSG held out easily, even threatening twice through Menez in stoppage time.

Although PSG left chilly Lorraine with maximum points, it will be basement outfit Nancy who take most of the plaudits after a performance that seriously tested Carlo Ancelotti’s side. While the capital side is still yet to find its top gear, it heads into the winter top, though this victory will doubtless only increase concerns that it is reliant on Ibrahimovic.

Manchester City 1-0 Swansea City: Tevez stunner marred by injury to Richards

Manchester City has momentarily moved into second in the Premier League after a less-than-convincing 1-0 win over Swansea at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening, leapfrogging Manchester United in the process.

The first half was a rather drab affair until a late flurry from Swansea, with Michu going close on a couple of occasions, but the scores were level at the break.

A much more potent start to the second half saw City make the breakthrough with 60 minutes on the clock as Carlos Tevez found the net from distance.

Roberto Mancini made three changes from the side which won at West Brom last weekend with Joleon Lescott and Mario Balotelli being replaced by Matija Nastasic and Sergio Aguero, while Aleksandar Kolarov came in for the suspended James Milner.

Swansea also picked up a win last time out in the Premier League and on the back of those three points against Wigan, manager Michael Laudrup opted to name an unchanged side.

The first quarter of the match was somewhat of a non-event, but a deep free kick delivered by Jonathan De Guzman around the 15-minute mark had Joe Hart flapping like a wounded duck. Luckily for the England international the ball went harmlessly out of play.

A Carlos Tevez shot around the 40th minute sparked some life into the match, and Laudrup’s side immediately sprang a marvelous counterattack that ended with Vincent Kompany booting the ball clear ahead of the lurking Michu, after good work down the right from Pablo Hernandez.

A matter of seconds later Leon Britton threaded an inch-perfect through ball between several defenders for Michu, and after getting clear of the City back line the Spaniard looked destined to score, but Hart rushed out and blocked his shot, keeping the score at 0-0 over the break.

City began the second half with purpose as Aguero spun away from De Guzman and then curled an effort towards the top far corner, but it whistled just wide as the match started to liven up.

A couple of minutes later, halftime substitute Mario Balotelli almost got on the end of Samir Nasri’s cross, but Ashley Williams put it behind. The Italian was soon involved again as it appeared he was brought down in the area by Williams only for the referee to wave play on.

However, the reward for City’s good start to the second half came on the hour mark as Gael Clichy burst in towards the center before laying the ball off to Tevez, who fired into the bottom corner from some 30-yards.

Despite being behind, Swansea was not giving up and could have won a penalty with 20 minutes to go as a Michu header appeared to hit Kompany on the arm, while a long-range De Guzman strike narrowly missed the top corner four minutes later.

Twelve minutes of stoppage time were given due to rather nasty looking injuries to Vorm and Micah Richards, but despite plenty of possession in that time, Swansea was unable to to conjure anything up and City held on for three points to go second pending United's match at Chelsea on Sunday.

AC Milan 1-0 Genoa: El Shaarawy strike eases pressure on Allegri

A late goal from Stephan El Shaarawy earned AC Milan three valuable points in front of their own fans, as they failed to impress but hit in time to secure a 1-0 win over Genoa at San Siro.

The youngster celebrated his birthday in style with a simple finish after good work from Ignazio Abate, but there were few festivities following a less than convincing performance from the home team.

The Rossoneri, bruised after Champions League defeat to Malaga which had heaped pressure on Massimiliano Allegri, started by dominating control of the ball across the pitch, with Genoa afforded few touches as it defended from deep. Despite this early possession, however, chances were few and far between for Milan. Indeed, the visitors were the first to record a shot on target, Bosko Jankovic trying his luck from distance with a free kick that was saved comfortably by Marco Amelia.

Cristian Zapata was then left thankful that his mistake did not put the Rossoneri behind in the first half. Dawdling on the ball, the Colombian defender was robbed by Luca Antonelli, who tried to find Ciro Immobile in the middle. Amelia tried to clear only for his punch to hit the forward, the ball finishing agonizingly wide of the left post to hand Milan a reprieve.

The hosts continued to try and open the game, making extensive use of Urby Emanuelson out wide as they poured forward. However, all too often Allegri's men fell apart in the final third, poor delivery and stout Genoa defending frustrating their efforts to get ahead. Mario Yepes had one of the few opportunities to fall to a player in red and black, steering a free header over the bar from Luca Antonini's cross.

Celebrating his 20th birthday on Saturday, El Shaarawy was one of the players who looked most likely to create something. The youngster troubled Genoa throughout the opening 45 minutes with his talent on the ball, and went within inches of creating the goal to break the deadlock. Picking up a loose ball after an overhit corner, the forward got to the byline and drilled across the face of Sebastian Frey's net, but no Milan man reacted quick enough and a frustrating first period ended with the sides still tied.

The game restarted with Milan immediately looking to take the initiative, and substitute Kevin Constant just missed out on handing his side the lead. Alexandre Pato left his marker for dead on the right and squared across the goalmouth, but the midfielder could not reach the ball and the Rossoblu cleared to safety. Sebastian Frey was then called into action to save from Ignazio Abate, using his feet to deflect away the wideman's powerful low effort.

After that early flurry, the second half developed in much the same fashion as before the break. Milan continued to hold the ball but could find no way through against a Genoa team content to play out a draw and look for opportunities on the counter, which made for a rather turgid encounter.

At the other end, Genoa sporadically threatened Amelia's net. Alexander Merkel took a speculative effort which was comfortably claimed by the goalkeeper, before being rather more strongly tested with 20 minutes left on the clock. Daniel Toszer fired with power from outside the box, and Amelia had to get down low to hold the ball and keep his clean sheet intact. Just when the match looked destined to end in stalemate, however, Milan struck to take the advantage.

There were big question marks over Ignazio Abate's positioning as he overlapped on the right, the midfielder appearing to be in an offside position when he received the ball. The flag stayed down, however, and Abate squared for El Shaarawy to net a simple tap-in and, with just over 10 minutes to play, secure three points for an underwhelming Milan.

The win temporarily lifts the Rossoneri to ninth place in the Serie A, with 10 points from its first nine outings. Genoa, meanwhile, slips to 11th as it is leapfrogged by Milan in the standings.
