Sunderland 0-0 QPR: Redknapp regime underway with goalless draw

    233889hp2.jpg

Harry Redknapp's first game in charge of QPR ended in what is likely to be a satisfactory 0-0 draw with Sunderland in Tuesday's Premier League clash.

Though the result will not lift the R’s from the bottom of the table – no outcome would have – an away point, and a performance palpably injected with increased confidence and togetherness, will offer the club’s new manager with plenty to build on as his side enters a string of winnable games in December.

Martin O’Neill’s side, meanwhile, remains in the league's lower echelons, having failed to move significantly clearer of the relegation zone.

Redknapp shuffled the pack for his new side, bringing in Esteban Granero, Samba Diakite and Jose Bosingwa back into his starting lineup after Saturday's defeat at Old Trafford.

Martin O'Neill, meanwhile, brought in Craig Gardner and Matthew Kilgallon for the hosts, with Jack Colback and the injured John O'Shea making way.

The Northern Irishman's decision to risk fielding Lee Cattermole - a doubt before the game - almost immediately backfired, however, as his captain was forced off with a recurrence of his recent knee injury after only five minutes, replaced in midfield by Jack Colback.

Given that its two sides were supposedly lacking in confidence, the game's opening stages were not short of attacking ambition - especially from the visitors. Armand Traore was rarely shy of making his way forward from left back, while Adel Taarabt's trademark flair was too in plentiful supply.

Less surprising, though, was the game's death in technical quality, as Djibril Cisse, Steven Fletcher and Stephane Sessegnon all turned half-chances into tame efforts on goal in the first 20 minutes, and neither side appeared capable of retaining meaningful possession through much of the first period. Tidy ball use from the likes of Granero and Seb Larsson proved largely the exception to a rule of overriding scrappiness.

The latter phase of the half provided a clear chance for each side, however, as Jamie Mackie and Fletcher both saw almost identical chances blocked by onrushing goalkeepers following well-weighted through balls.

A groin injury to Julio Cesar meant that England international Robert Green represented the game's second forced introduction at the interval, and the substitute was twice employed early on in the second half, smothering a whipped left-wing cross from Adam Johnson before getting down superbly to keep out a powerful close rage header from Fletcher.

Green was again tested by a speculative long range strike from Larsson, while substitute Shaun Wright-Phillips saw his shot rebound off the legs of Simon Mignolet after a smart late breakaway.

In the end, though, neither side could conjure a chance truly worthy of sealing the three points, though with QPR desperately needing any sort of result and the home side having kept a much-needed clean sheet, a draw is perhaps not the worst compromise for both parties.

Pirlo or Iniesta deserve Ballon d'Or, claims Cannavaro

    159941hp2.jpg

Former Real Madrid and Italy defender Fabio Cannavaro has voiced his disbelief that Andres Iniesta and Andrea Pirlo are not being considered as realistic candidates for this year's FIFA Ballon d'Or.

Three-time winner Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the favorites for the trophy, but Cannavaro believes that the process should not be a two-horse race. As Messi gets closer to breaking Gerd Muller's record for goals scored in a calendar year and Ronaldo has been in prolific form with Real Madrid in 2012, Cannavaro admits that such feats are difficult to beat, though.

"Of course I realize that it will be difficult for them to overcome two star players like Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo," Cannavaro told reporters. "I [don't think the race should be] between Messi and Ronaldo - I'd choose Pirlo or Iniesta. Iniesta is amazing with Spain and has won the last two European Championships. Pirlo is extraordinary, and has not only won the Scudetto with Juventus but reached the final of Euro 2012 with Italy."

Cannavaro himself was FIFA's World Player of the Year in 2006 after helping Italy to the World Cup championship.

Borussia Dortmund 1-1 Fortuna Dusseldorf: Champions blow chance to close on Bayern

    233869hp2.jpg

Borussia Dortmund blew the opportunity to close to within six points of Bundesliga leader Bayern Munich after being held to a 1-1 draw by Fortuna Dusseldorf at Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday.

Jakub Blaszczykowski gave the champions the lead in spectacular fashion at the tail end of a disappointing first half, but Stefan Reisinger deservedly drew the visitors level on 78 minutes to split the points. Kevin Grosskreutz then missed a glorious chance to win it for Dortmund,

With both sets of supporters at Signal Iduna Park partaking in a 12-minute silent protest related to ticketing, the opening exchanges were played out in a very surreal atmosphere. They wouldn’t have had much to cheer about anyway, as a compact Dusseldorf restricted Dortmund to a couple of speculative efforts from Marcel Schmelzer.

A low drive from Marco Reus, which was easily turned around the post by Fabian Giefer in the Dusseldorf goal, was the best Dortmund could muster before the defending champion took the lead in a manner that was completely at odds with what had gone before.

Lukasz Piszczek was released into space down the right-hand side and he swung over a cross that Blaszczykowski chested down into the path of the supporting Grosskreutz. The winger immediately cushioned the ball back to his teammate, who promptly dispatched a sublime volley past a helpless Giefer.

Blaszczykowski nearly netted again two minutes into the second half, albeit in far more fortuitous circumstances, with the Pole’s mishit cross from the right wing requiring a smart save from the scrambling Giefer.

Dusseldorf had offered little by way of an attacking threat up until that point but it should have levelled matters moments later. Robbie Kruse sprung the offside trap down the left-hand side before driving infield. The Australia attacker took too much out of the ball in trying to go around Roman Weidenfeller and only just managed to toe the ball to Reisinger, who then saw his goal-bound effort inadvertently blocked by teammate Ken Ilso.

Kruse found himself in space down the left wing once more and this time he made it count, sending over a wonderfully inviting cross that Reisinger headed home at the back post.

Dortmund had an almost immediate chance to reclaim the lead when Lukasz Piszczek nodded the ball down into the path of Grosskreutz, but the Germany international criminally balooned the ball over the bar from just eight yards out with the goal at his mercy.

Jurgen Klopp's men threw everything they had left at Dusseldorf during a frantic finale in which Ivan Paurevic was sent off for a second yellow, but they were unable to find a way through, meaning Bayern can now put 11 points between the two sides ahead of Saturday's clash at the Allianz Arena.

Cavani: Scudetto is within reach for Napoli

    226405hp2.jpg

Napoli striker Edinson Cavani has spoken optimistically of his side's title chances, stating that he and his teammates are "on the case."

The Partenopei are currently second in the Serie A table - two points behind leaders Juventus - and Cavani believes that the Scudetto is a realistic target this season.

"Winning the championship is not a dream so far," Cavani told reporters. "Juve are easily reachable. Let's just say that the team and I are on the case. I did not come to Naples to do more than [Diego] Maradona. I came here to get into people's hearts and leave a mark in the history of the club."

Cavani was full of gratitude for his current situation, but he admitted that his competitive nature was a huge driving force behind success and that Napoli must be prepared to try anything to be victorious.

"Whenever I'm on the field I want to win at all costs, I struggle to digest the defeats," Cavani said. "In life you can be as gentle as doves, but on the field we players have to be eagles."

Walcott and Sagna left out of 2013 Arsenal calendar

    230070hp2.jpg

Arsenal duo Theo Walcott and Bacary Sagna have not been included in the club’s official 2013 calendar, fueling speculation over the pair's long-term futures.

The omission of the duo from the calendar - which features a different first team player for each month - could be seen as a sign that neither of their futures lie at the Emirates.

Walcott’s contract is currently set to expire next summer, with the England international being linked with a move to Premier League rivals Manchester City and Liverpool, and is able to speak to foreign clubs over a free transfer for the end of the season in January.

The 23-year-old has been in superb form for his side this season - grabbing nine goals and four assists from his 15 appearances in all competitions.

Right back Sagna’s future is also in doubt, with the France international thought to be interesting Inter, while deputy Carl Jenkinson impressed boss Arsene Wenger at the start of the season.

Sagna suffering a broken leg at the end of last term, and has since made six appearances for the club after returning to match fitness.

    Congratulations Manchester United!!!

:love:Manchester United 1-0 West Ham: Van Persie strikes to keep hosts top

    article-2239950-16421814000005DC-226_634x398.jpg

Manchester United remains top of the Premier League after a narrow 1-0 win over West Ham at Old Trafford courtesy of an early goal from Robin van Persie.

The hosts made five changes for the game with Chris Smalling, Michael Carrick, Anderson, Tom Cleverley, and Javier Hernandez all coming in. West Ham, meanwhile, also opted to freshen up their team with Guy Demel, James Collins, Matt Jarvis, and Matt Taylor all starting.

Having gone behind nine times already this season, Manchester United this time started the game strongly and took the lead with just 33 seconds on the clock, the fastest Premier League goal so far this season.

A measured pass from Carrick found Van Persie just inside the West Ham box. The Dutchman’s exquisite turn and touch took him past Winston Reid, and his second was a finish which deflected off James Collins and looped over a stranded Jussi Jaaseklainen to hand United the lead.

The early goal shocked West Ham, which saw Kevin Nolan booked minutes later for a cynical foul on Cleverley, but it slowly came back into the game, with high balls into the box causing the hosts problems at the back.

Indeed with just 10 minutes on the clock, a left-wing free kick found Nolan in space at the near post. The former Newcastle man flicked a header goalwards, that looked to have Lindegaard beaten, but only flew into the side-netting.

Midway through the first half and Andy Carroll came close to an equalizer. A weak clearing header from Jonny Evans fell kindly for the striker but his turn and volley from close range flew over the United bar.

In contrast, the hosts were finding chances hard to come by although Anderson and Hernandez both forced Jaaskelainen to save well on the half hour mark with low, curling efforts.
The second half saw West Ham start strongly yet it was Manchester United which enjoyed the most chances after the break.

A Cleverley volley after a touch from Van Persie forced Jaaskelainen to tip the ball over the bar before the goalkeeper was called into action again, this time saving comfortably from a Van Persie free kick.

And the Finn was called into action again on the hour mark after Anderson picked out an unmarked Rooney lurking on the edge of the box. The England man attempted to curl a shot into the far corner but again the West Ham keeper was equal to it, tipping his effort around the post.

Yet perhaps the best chance of the game fell to the visitors with just eight minutes to go. Yet another long ball into the box from Collins, was brought down by substitute Carlton Cole who fired goalwards on the turn but could not beat Lindegaard who saved crucially for the hosts.
As the 90 minute mark approached, and just a one-goal lead to the good, a degree of anxiety crept into the hosts' game. Yet they managed to hold on to preserve their lead, and their position at the top of the table.

Everton 1-1 Arsenal: Fellaini cancels out early Walcott opener

    article-2239951-164223CF000005DC-974_634x439.jpg

Marouane Fellaini celebrated his return to the Everton team with the equalizer as honors were shared with Arsenal in an entertaining game at Goodison Park.

It had all started so well for the away side when Theo Walcott put the Gunners ahead with less than a minute on the clock, bending home after an Aaron Ramsey pass.

But Fellaini pounced on one of many sloppy Arsenal passes to drive past Szczesny and earn Everton a share of the spoils.

David Moyes made three changes for the visit of the Gunners, with Marouane Fellaini returning from suspension alongside Darron Gibson and Tony Hibbert, replacing Brian Oviedo, Thomas Hitzlsperger, and Johnny Heitinga.

Arsene Wenger also took the opportunity to rotate his squad. In came Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere, Bacary Sagna, and Thomas Vermaelen, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Carl Jenkinson, and Kieran Gibbs dropping to the bench. Lukas Podolski missed out altogether.

And it was the Gunners who made a rapid start to proceedings. With less a minute on the watch, Walcott collected a Ramsey slide rule pass on the left side of the penalty area, before bending it into the top corner via a slight deflection.

The early goal seemed to settle the home side after their shaky opening and following the withdrawal of Koscielny to injury, Arsenal retreated further into its own half as the 45 minutes wore on, giving the ball away at will.

And The Gunners were eventually punished for their carelessness when Fellaini intercepted a dire pass from Bacary Sagna before sliding a 20-yard shot beyond Szczesny for the equaliser.

Jelavic should have completed the first-half turnaround after he nipped round Per Mertesacker in the box, but the striker could only blaze a right-footed drive wastefully over.

The Gunners were producing a toothless display, riddled with soft errors and disjointed attacking play, with Everton in stark contrast – and especially Jelavic and Fellaini - looking dangerous in the final third.

And as the halftime whistle drew near, the Croatian bore the brunt of Baines’ frustration when the England left back burst clear only for Jelavic to nip it off his toes from an offside position.

The second period began in a similar vein, with Steven Naismith only denied by a last-gasp Gibbs challenge and Sylvain Distin’s header well saved by Szczesny as Everton began to turn the screw.

A committed home display was producing everything but a goal although Steven Pienaar was unfortunate to see a vociferous penalty appeal turned down after a clumsy challenge from Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal nearly secured the breakthrough the second half desperately needed but Tim Howard was alert enough to paw behind an innocuous Ramsey through-ball.

The Gunners though were continuing to be out-muscled, out-harried and ultimately outplayed as both sides pushed for a winner but were producing the better chances - substitute Gervinho was inches away from converting an Olivier Giroud cross with the goal gaping.

And despite a frantic end to proceedings, both sides had to settle for the draw after an enthralling clash.

Chelsea 0-0 Fulham: Dire draw piles pressure on Benitez

    article-2239930-164256D3000005DC-841_634x453.jpg

The task facing interim Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez became even more imposing as his side was booed off following a desperately poor goalless draw with west London rivals Fulham.

It was the second 0-0 scoreline in two games under the Spaniard, who replaced club legend Roberto Di Matteo last week, leaving Chelsea with just two wins from its last 10 fixtures, winless in six in the Premier League and yet to score under Benitez.

There was mutiny in the air towards the end of the game as the Chelsea fans sang ‘we want our Chelsea back’ before loudly jeering the team off at the full time whistle after it created virtually no opportunities in the 90 minutes.

Di Matteo’s name once again rang around Stamford Bridge in the 16th minute - recognizing the shirt number he used to wear as a Blues player - and Benitez appears to face an impossible task to win around the crowd here.

The former Liverpool manager made two changes to the side that drew 0-0 in his first game in charge against Manchester City on Sunday, making the strange decision to rest Juan Mata and John Obi Mikel, with Oriol Romeu and Ryan Bertrand coming in. Fulham, for its part, made three changes from the side that lost to Stoke last time out, with Mahamadou Diarra, Hugo Rodallega and Damien Duff brought into the starting lineup.

Benitez avoided the boos that greeted his appearance in the home dugout against City, yet the atmosphere around Stamford Bridge was flat from the outset, as if all enthusiasm has been sucked out of the players and supporters in the last week.

Chelsea simply lacked any invention as Oscar and Eden Hazard were denied space to operate and Fernando Torres was lazy and laboured in his movement as the focal point of the attack.

The only action of note in the first period came on the half-hour mark when Blues right back Cesar Azpilicueta squared for Torres, who turned sharply in the penalty area but struck his effort straight at Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer with his left foot.

The boos and jeers that greeted the players at the halftime whistle did nothing to inspire an improved performance after the break, with Fulham more threatening as it looked to counterattack.

In the 58th minute, fantastic chipped pass by Giorgos Karagounis put Fulham left back John Arne Riise through on goal but the Norwegian scuffed his shot from eight yards and Petr Cec was able to save.

Fifteen minutes from time, Riise again tested Cech with a stinging shot from 20 yards after tidy work from substitute Kerim Frei. As the game drew to a close, the visitors increasingly looked the more likely scorers as they continued to play with defensive organization and verve of the break.

Yet for Benitez, there is a long, long way to go if he is to win around the Chelsea fans and convince them that owner Roman Abramovich made the right decision.

Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool: Lennon and Bale do the damage to move Spurs up to fifth

    dembeletacklesgerrard-liverpoolvtottenham_576x324.jpg

Tottenham held off a resilient Liverpool side to clinch a 2-1 win to go fifth in the Premier League, with Gareth Bale scoring at both ends.

The winger set up Aaron Lennon for the first, before doubling his side’s lead with a free kick inside 16 minutes, only for Sandro’s goal-line clearance to rebound off the Welshman’s face to give the Reds hope with 20 minutes to play.

Moussa Dembele returned to the starting lineup for Spurs after recovering from a hip injury while Brendan Rodgers named an unchanged side to that which drew 0-0 with Swansea City, with Jos Enrique continuing on the left of front three.

The hosts got off to the perfect start when Bale’s jinking run into the area and drive across Pepe Reina was met by the unmarked Lennon to tap in at the far post with seven minutes on the clock.

The away side came back strong, though, and should have equalized soon after when Hugo Lloris rushed out to clear Steven Gerrard’s through-ball, only for Kyle Walker to divert the ball into Jordan Henderson’s path and, with the goal gaping, the midfielder sent his shot from 18 yards wide.

But Tottenham was rampant and soon doubled their lead when Bale fizzed a free kick up and over the wall which Reina seemingly failed to read as it nestled into the center of the goal.
As the saying goes ‘2-0 is the most dangerous lead in football’, and the hosts seemed to either relax or start feeling the nerves of an apparently comfortable lead to allow Liverpool the chance to build momentum.

Lloris found himself all at sea for the second time in the game when Dembele’s clumsy challenge on Steven Gerrard again takes the ball away from the shot-stopper to leave Luis Suarez with an open goal, but another weak effort is this time punted off the line by the back-tracking Kyle Walker.

Liverpool started the second half as it finished the first by dominating possession and again went close when sloppy marking from Michael Dawson allowed Enrique to find Henderson inside the area for a shot on goal.

Andre Villas-Boas was visibly agitated on the touchline with the away side dominating possession but Clint Dempsey nearly gave his side a reprieve when he pounced on a mix-up from Martin Skrtel to run through on goal with Defoe, but the Spurs pair both shirked responsibility on the edge of the area to allow Glen Johnson to recover and clear.

The Reds finally clinched the reprieve their play deserved with 20 minutes to play, but in fortuitous fashion when Sandro’s goal-line clearance from a Liverpool corner was hit straight into Bale’s face from a yard out and back into the net for an own goal.

Suarez thought he had won his team a penalty at the death when William Gallas tangled with the striker inside the area, prompting manic protests from the away bench, but referee Phil Dowd quickly dismissed the Urguyuan’s yelps as Liverpool’s eight-match unbeaten run came to an end.

Barcelona 3-1 Alaves (agg 6-1): Villa double eases Blaugrana into last 16

    234398hp2.jpg

Barcelona marched into the Copa Del Rey round of 16 with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Deportivo Alaves in the second leg of their last-32 clash at Camp Nou on Wednesday.

The Catalan giants added to their 3-0 first-leg victory in Basque Country at the end of October to run up a 6-1 aggregate scoreline, though they were given an early scare by the visitors when Viguera pounced on a defensive mix-up to open the scoring after 17 minutes.

However, Adriano, who was at fault for the first goal, restored parity shortly after the half-hour mark. The Blaugrana took control in the second half, surging into the lead thanks to a sublime free kick from David Villa, who added a third goal almost instantly after from a sweeping break.

Barca now awaits its opponents in the fifth round, with the first leg set to take place on Dec. 11-13, but must first turn attentions to their Liga clash against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

Tito Villanova opted to exclude a host of his regulars in his starting XI, with familiar faces such as Villa and Javier Mascherano lining up alongside the likes of Sergi Roberto and Jonathan Dos Santos.

Facing a three goal deficit, Alaves nonetheless threatened to make a contest out of the tie when it stormed into the lead after 17 minutes. Adriano was the guilty party, surrenduring possession in a dangerous area, from which Miki crossed for Viguera to slide home.

The visitors were given new life by the opener, and their energetic play caused more than a few problems for a suspect looking Barca defense.

But with 10 minutes to go until the break, Adriano would make amends for his earlier error. The Brazilian had already tested Sergio Herrera with a drive from range, and made no mistake at the second time of asking, linking well with Thiago before slotting under the Alaves keeper.

That goal completely floored the visitors, taking all the wind out of their sails as they settled into something of a damage-limitation exercise, with Barca moving into control.

And 11 minutes into the second half, the tie was well and truly put to bed by Villa, who flighted a perfectly-placed free kick from the edge of the area into the top corner, leaving Herrera completely beaten.

Alaves thought that it had equalized immediately after the restart when Luismi turned home a cross from close range, but the goal was chalked off on a questionable offside call, despite the winger looking level with play upon replays.

Barca wasted little time in counting their good fortune, and in an instant, added a third goal. Tello sprung past the host's backline admirably, and found himself with the time and space to tee up Villa for a straightforward finish and his second goal of the night.

From that point on, the game turned into a passing exhibition for the home side, allowing the La Masia fringe players on display to impress watching eyes, and stake their claim for a more regular place in the first team.

There was simply nothing more to come for Alaves, whose interest in the game was long ended by the time the final whistle blew, signalling the progression of the Blaugrana into the last 16.

Swansea City 3-1 West Brom: Rampant Routledge ends brilliant Baggies run

    234396hp2.jpg

Swansea City grabbed all three points against a previously in-form West Brom, running out comfortable 3-1 winners in a midweek Premier League clash.

All the goals came in the first half, in which the Swans dazzled. Michu fired in the first from close range before Wayne Routledge struck twice, while Romelu Lukaku's reply was not enough to provoke a comeback.

Michael Laudrup opted to make one change from the side that were held to a goalless draw against Liverpool on Sunday, bringing in Ki Sung-Yueng for Itay Shechter with Michu moving up the pitch to play as their lone frontman.

As for the visitors, Steve Clarke made two changes from the starting XI that won 4-2 away to Sunderland in their last outing - with Romelu Lukaku and Youssuf Mulumbu coming in for Zoltan Gera and Shane Long.

The home side was rewarded for its bright start in the ninth minute when top scorer Michu got himself on the scoresheet. Nathan Dyer got forward well before whipping in a cross from the right which Pablo Hernandez did well to lay off first time to his fellow Spaniard, who applied the finish from close range.

The Welsh outfit doubled its lead three minutes later - this time through ex-Tottenham wideman Routledge. The stylish Hernandez was again involved in the buildup, this time forcing himself to the byline before picking out his teammate. His attempt deflected off Baggies defender Gareth McAuley and past a helpless Boaz Myhill.

The Swans added a third just over five minutes before halftime. Dyer played it to young fullback Ben Davies, who picked out Hernandez with a neat ball. The Spaniard continued his impressive evening by crossing to Routledge, who applied the finish to grab his second.

West Brom headed into the match having won its last four matches and restored some hope of continuing that streak thanks to the final piece of action in the first half. Ki failed to deal with Chris Brunt's corner and on-loan Chelsea striker Lukaku pounced to grab his second goal in as many matches.

Neither side managed to dominate the early stages of the second period, with a rash Lukaku effort the only chance to fall to either team in the opening minutes as they searched for another goal.

The hosts sprung to life in the 72nd minute, when Hernandez did well to pick out Michu, whose header hit the target but was comfortably saved by Myhill.

The visitors' keeper was again called into action two minutes later when Michu forced him to make another solid stop from his long-range attempt.

As much as it tried, West Brom failed to get itself on the scoresheet again with the home side content to keep its lead intact.

Next up for Swansea is a trip to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal, while West Brom will be looking to get back to winning ways when it hosts Stoke City.

Stoke 2-1 Newcastle: Toon slump continues after late Jerome winner

Stoke came from behind to beat Newcastle 2-1 in an entertaining second half of football.

The home side started with an unchanged lineup following a win at the weekend over Fulham, with former Newcastle captain Michael Owen's return from injury deemed too soon for this game.

Fabricio Coloccini returned from suspension for the Magpies and replaced his center back partner Steven Taylor who, along with Yohan Cabaye, could be out for up to eight weeks.

Newcastle had the first chance of the game. James Perch brushed off a challenge and let fly from distance but his shot was always curling away from Asmir Begovic's goal.

The goalkeeper had to be alert to gather a scuffed left-footed shot from Vurnon Anita as the Magpies were starting to find holes in the Stoke defense early on.

Charlie Adam came the closest to opening the scoring after Davide Santon gave away a free kick. The midfielder's set piece flicked off defender Mike Williamson onto the post and out of play.

This seemed to awaken the Potters and they went close again moments after, this time Glenn Whelan's free kick curled over the bar as Stoke started to turn the screw.

Peter Crouch had to be substituted after a collision with Coloccini left him with blood streaming from his nose and Kenwyne Jones came on to replace him.

It was a quiet first half as both sides battled it out in midfield with Newcastle shading possession.

The match finally opened up after 47 minutes when Newcastle opened the scoring and it came from goal-shy Papiss Cisse.

Cheikh Tiote dispossessed Glenn Whelan from around 30 yards out before finding Demba Ba. His long-range effort was spilled by Begovic into the path of Cisse who rolled the ball home.

The goal was what the game needed and Jonathan Walters went close, beating Santon in the air but headed the ball wide.

Cisse nipped in behind the defense to meet a long ball, sprinted past Robert Huth but could only shoot straight at Begovic.

The game was becoming more and more open at both ends of the pitch, Walters again beating his man and forces Tim Krul to make a fine diving save on the volley but he fluffed his lines with the rebound.

Despite the pressure from Stoke looking for an equalizer, it was Newcastle which almost doubled the lead with 15 minutes left.

Another over the top ball finds Ba and Begovic had to make a brilliant save to keep the ball out as it was destined for the bottom corner.

The Magpies were set to rue those chances though as Stoke scored two inside five minutes.

The first came on 81 minutes, Walters got the better of Krul at the third time of asking, planting his header into the top corner out of his reach following a cross from substitute Cameron Jerome.

Three minutes later and the hosts were in the lead in typically Stoke fashion. The ball was hit long and into the path of Jones who nodded down for Jerome who then smashed it past Krul.

Moyes bemoans penalty decision following Arsenal draw

    223052hp2.jpg

Everton manager David Moyes has bemoaned referee Michael Olivier’s decision not to award his side a penalty during the Toffees’ 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

The 49-year-old saw his side fall behind after just 52 seconds to a Theo Walcott goal but Marouane Fellaini leveled for the home side, to help Everton record its sixth draw in the last eight Premier League games.

However, Moyes feels Everton deserved more from the game after seeing Steven Pienaar’s second-half penalty appeal turned down following a perceived foul by Mikel Arteta, with Olivier opting to award a corner instead.
"It was a penalty. We played Arsenal today, who are a really good team, but we also had very few decisions go for us," he told reporters. "Sometimes referee's decisions change the games. In some games something might go in your favour but we were never going to get that tonight. We got nothing whatsoever and anything we were going to get we had to earn on our own because we were not going to get a lot.

"There was an incident when the ball got chipped into the box later on and he gave a push on Fellaini. I've had a chance to see it and it was never anything like it. I found that one as mystifying as any really. We found it a difficult night from that point if view but the players played really well throughout."

Despite playing the full game, left back Leighton Baines sustained a hamstring injury and now is a doubt to face Manchester City on Saturday, along with striker Nikica Jelavic who has had his training hampered by illness.

However, Moyes confirmed that both Darron Gibson and Tony Hibbert are back from injury.

"[Baines] felt it in the game and played on in the last 10 or 15 minutes," he added.

"We've got Gibbo [Darron Gibson] and Hibbo [Tony Hibbert] back and that has eased it a little bit but I am worried about Nikica Jelavic who has not trained since Saturday and yesterday I was not playing him."

Lucio: I am unhappy at Juventus

    228721hp2.jpg

Lucio has voiced his dismay with his current situation at Juventus and has admitted he could leave the club if he does not get regular first team action.

The Brazilian defender, 34, joined Juve on a free transfer this summer after he was released by Inter, but he has been unable to make an impact at the Turin powerhouse so far, and Wolfsburg is believed to be keen to lure him back to the Bundesliga.

"I am unhappy at the moment because I don't play much at Juventus," the center back told Sport Bild. "A return to the Bundesliga is a serious option. Things are organized very well in Germany. The league is on the rise and some good football is being played there.

"Wolfsburg are a team with big plans for the future. The club is well run. VfL would definitely be an option for me."

Lucio has a contract with Juventus until June 2014.

Southampton 1-1 Norwich City: Snodgrass saves point after Lambert opener

It was difficult to predict a winner pre-match at the St Mary’s Stadium as Southampton came into the game unbeaten in its last 3 games whilst Norwich City hadn’t lost since playing Chelsea at the beginning of November.

The Saints were impressive early on and luck was on their side after 33 minutes when Rickie Lambert capitalized on an unfortunate ricochet in the Norwich defense, striking from inside the six-yard box.

The visitors rallied and Saints goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga gifted the Canaries an equalizer moments before half time. The Argentine fumbled a well struck free kick from Robert Snodgrass forcing Nigel Adkins to re-write his team talk.

Southampton remained unchanged following their 2-0 victory over Newcastle on Sunday whilst Norwich’s only change to the side that earned a last gasp point at Everton was enforced on them. Goalkeeper Mark Bunn replaced the injured John Ruddy who is likely to miss up to three months with a thigh problem picked up in the 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.

The home side started brightly, dominating possession in the opening 15 minutes with Gaston Ramirez particularly influential as the Saints looked to test stand-in goalkeeper Bunn early on in the game.

The hosts came close after ten minutes when the impressive Jason Puncheon crossed for Rickie Lambert, but the striker’s header back across goal eluded both the incoming Ramirez and Adam Lallana and the Canaries were able to clear.

Much of the talk before the game centered on the return of referee Mark Clattenburg, who took charge of his first match in a month after being cleared by the FA for allegedly racially abusing Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel.

It was inevitable that there would be a controversial moment and it came after just 33 minutes. The Saints took the lead after Norwich midfielder Snodgrass gave away a needless free kick out wide on the right. The ball was whipped in by Lallana before a ricochet off the back of Canaries’ captain Grant Holt hit the arm of Lambert before the striker prodded the ball home from inside the six-yard box. Norwich appealed in vain for a handball against the Southampton striker but Clattenburg waved way the protests and the goal stood.

Southampton controlled the first half but a goalkeeping error cost them as the whistled approach. Snodgrass cleverly noticed Saints’ goalkeeper Gazzaniga's poor positioning and powerfully struck a left-footed curling effort around the Saints’ wall. The ball bounced in front of the Argentine goalkeeper and he fumbled what should have been a routine save into the back of the net.

The visitors started the second half brightly with their equalizer on the stroke of half time giving them the impetus. The Canaries pressurized the Saints from the whistle penning them in their own half.

Southampton grew stronger as the second half progressed. Puncheon, Ramirez and Lallana were impressive but the Norwich defense remained strong, restricting the Saints’ efforts on goal.

As the game reached its climax both sides failed to find the winner that they deserved. Norwich returns to Carrow Road with a point, but the Saints manager will be disappointed that a goalkeeping gaffe has cost his side all three points.

Real Madrid denies 'Benzema to PSG' hoax call

    226652hp2.jpg

Real Madrid have denied the involvement of Karim Benzema in a prank call on Spanish radio station Loca FM, in which the French forward is alleged to have insulted Atletico Madrid and claimed he could be close to a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

The station's show, El Exorcista, has surprised a number of celebrities in the past, including Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero and former Spain coach Luis Aragones.

And this time they chose to poke fun at Benzema, as the presenter, 'Carlitos Way', asked the supposed striker if he would be interested in a move to Atletico at the end of the season to replace Radamel Falcao.

"Is this a joke?" replied the alleged Frenchman, before adding: "I won't speak about that on the phone - you will have to talk to my manager."

The presenter, who claimed to be calling on behalf of Atleti president Enrique Cerezo, said the club could offer Benzema an attractive package to move to Real's cross-city rivals, but warned the forward he could not score in this week's derby clash between the two sides.

To that, the alleged Frenchman replied: "Do you really think I am going to move from Real Madrid, the biggest club in the world, to a sh*t team who nobody knows ...?"

He added that Atletico's advantage over Madrid in La Liga was merely "by chance" and asked who would be their coach next season. "[Diego] El Cholo Simeone," the presenter replied, to which the striker said: "I prefer Mou [Jose Mourinho]."

"I am closer to PSG than to Atleti," the supposed striker then revealed.

Real Madrid strongly denied the quotes attributed to the Frenchman claiming the call was to someone else and not their 35m striker euros. "The statements attributed to Karim Benzema are false," a club official said.

Crystal Palace rules out January move for Zaha amid Arsenal and Manchester United interest

    227955hp2.jpg

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has insisted that Wilfried Zaha will be staying at Selhurst Park until the end of the season.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger confirmed on Tuesday that the highly rated England international is among the targets being considered by the north London club, while Goal.com exclusively revealed Manchester United's interest earlier in November.

However, Parish has confirmed that the Championship side is yet to receive any bids for Zaha and, while the club would look at any offer made, the Eagles currently have no intention of selling their star assest.“He will definitely be playing at Crystal Palace after January," Parish told talkSPORT. "Why would we sell him? What would we achieve by selling him?
"We’ve been speaking this week with [Zaha’s] representatives.

Right now we’re focused on getting out of this division. "Nobody has contacted me from any of the clubs who are supposedly interested in him. We will have to cross that bridge when we come to it.

"If something was put in front of us and we spoke to the player and he wanted to go we would have to consider it. But right now we’re just focused on keeping the squad together."

Parish firmly believes that Zaha is destined for a career at the top, and says Palace is currently only focused on winning promotion to the Premier League and will look to hold on to the 20-year-old for as long as possible.

"When deals are put in front of us we will look at them but at the moment our main aim is getting out of this division," Parish added.

"That’s what we want to do and that’s what we’ve got an academy for. So that we can develop players and local players and punch above our weight if you like. That’s what we’re trying to do and that’s all we’re focused on."Wilf will play in the Premier League. We all know that. He will play for a top side in the Premier League.

"I probably won’t be able to develop the club as fast as he will develop his career, but we’d like to think that his first chance in his Premier League playing career could possibly be with us so that’s what we’re going to aim for."

Bale denies diving allegations after booking in win over Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur winger Gareth Bale has denied allegations of diving, despite picking up a yellow card for simulation once again in the 2-1 victory against Liverpool at White Hart Lane.

The Welsh wizard was instrumental in Spurs' success, putting the opener on a plate for Aaron Lennon after another trademark run before he added the second himself with a sumptuous free kick.

He did, however, put it into his own net in unfortunate circumstances after Lennon's attempted goal-line clearance inadvertently thumped the 23-year-old flush in the face before flying into an empty net.

But his performance was once again overshadowed as he received a caution from referee Phil Dowd after being adjudged to have simulated following a challenge from Daniel Agger.

"I thought I got clipped a little bit," he told Sky Sportsafter the game. "Sometimes it happens. You have just got to get on with it."

Spurs had previously suffered three successive defeats before the derby win over West Ham, and after back-to-back victories Andre Villas-Boas' side now sits fifth in the table above Everton and north London rival Arsenal.

"We are not too far off [where we want to be]," Bale added. "There were good results elsewhere for us tonight, which was important."We have just got to focus on ourselves, focus on game by game, and I think we are improving in every game."

Sir Alex Ferguson delighted with Manchester United's 'Christmas time' clean sheet

Sir Alex Ferguson praised Manchester United’s defense after grinding out a 1-0 victory at home to West Ham on Wednesday night.

Robin van Persie netted the fastest league goal so far this season with a deflected shot in the opening minute, but the Red Devils were unable to convert any more of their chances.

"West Ham are renowned for making it difficult for you," Ferguson told Sky Sports News. "They’re a very dogged team to break down.

"But we got a great start and I thought from there we could have pushed on. Some of our football was very good at times, but we never finished them off."

Asked if it felt unusual for his side to score the first goal in a game, after coming from behind to win six times already this term, the Scot quipped: "Yes, and to keep a clean sheet. That's Christmas time!

"I thought Chris Smalling did very well having just come into the team after a long absence with injury. Jonny Evans was magnificent and Rafael Da Silva was fantastic, absolutely terrific. So we do have plus points tonight, particularly defending. You have to against them because you have to against them because they're such a handful.

"We had opportunities to finish them off with some good football, but you've got to give credit to West Ham, they did really fight hard. They're a very well organized, big powerful team. I'm pleased with the result."

The win sees United retain its place at the top of the Premier League, one point above Manchester City.

Sir Alex added: "I think that if we can keep clean sheets more often it will give us a good foundation with which to go for the title."
