Everton 0-3 Wigan: Latics stun lackluster Toffees to reach Wembley semifinal

    261984hp2.jpg

Tim Howard's absence for Everton was on full display as a stunning four minute display from Wigan saw the Lactics score three goals to seal a 3-0 away victory at Goodison Park. Wigan booked its place in the semifinals of the FA Cup for the first time in its history.

Maynor Figueroa, Callum McManaman and Jordi Gomez's four minute onslaught on goal left the hosts stunned heading into halftime. Everton was unable to orchestrate an unlikely comeback and Wigan's halftime lead proved enough to seal an excellent victory for Roberto Martinez's men and put them into the last four.

David Moyes decided not to risk goalkeeper Howard, who was struggling with a back injury, meaning Jan Mucha took his place in goal. Meanwhile John Heitinga deputized for Phil Jagielka, who is awaiting surgery on an ankle injury.

Wigan made four changes from last weekend’s defeat against Liverpool, as Martinez threw cup shot-stopper Joel Robles in goal, with Gomez and McManaman also gained a place in the XI alongside Antolin Alcaraz, who made his first start since August.

The Latics started brightly but it was the hosts who fashioned the first chance, after Sylvain Distin met Leighton Baines’ superb whipped cross and headed just wide of the post.

It was a tight opening few minutes, but when Shaun Maloney managed to find space on the left he was inches away from putting Wigan in front, as he cut inside and curled a beautiful 20-yard effort around Mucha which came back out off the post.

Goal-shy Nikica Jelavic then forced a fine save from Robles, as he let the ball roll across him and fired a low effort from the edge of the box, only to be denied by the Wigan goalkeeper.

After James McCarthy tested Mucha with a rasping 25-yard volley, the Latics took the lead from the resulting corner as Figueroa rose highest at the far post to nod the ball low into the net.

Seconds later the lead was doubled when McManaman latched on to Phil Neville’s wayward pass and broke free before slotting a superb finish past the onrushing Mucha.

The madness continued just moments later as Aruna Kone squared the ball to Gomez on the edge of the box, and the midfielder stroked a delightful finish into the corner with Mucha watching helplessly, leaving the hosts in utter disarray at the break.

Moyes threw on Victor Anichebe for the disappointing Neville in the second half as Everton tried to inspire a comeback, and Fellaini almost got the hosts back in it as he volleyed an effort wide from 20 yards out.

Everton started to enjoy a large majority of the possession, but Wigan was keeping the club at arm’s length, and the home players’ and fans’ frustration was growing with every minute that passed.

The Toffees seemed to run out of steam halfway through the second half, and Figueroa had a chance to double his tally for the afternoon when Fellaini gifted him the ball on the edge of the box, only to drill his effort straight at Mucha.

Even the ever-reliable Baines struggled in the second half, firing a low cross straight into the arms of Robles with several team-mates available in the box.

Mirallas had the ball in the net with just over 15 minutes remaining, slotting a cool finish past the goalkeeper before discovering he was flagged offside when he received Anichebe’s pass.

Substitute Ross Barkley fired a late effort just wide of the post and Osman was denied by Robles from close range before Seamus Coleman headed wide, but the Latics had done a good job of stifling Everton’s rhythm as in the end they cruised to a superb victory, with Moyes’ men marching off at the final whistle amid a chorus of boos from the disappointed home faithful.

Schalke 2-1 Borussia Dortmund: More Ruhr derby delight for die Knappen

    262026hp2.jpg

A stunning first-half performance was enough for Schalke as it held on to claim the Revierderby, downing bitter rival Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at the Veltins Arena.

Goals in the opening 45 minutes from Julian Draxler and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar set the Champions League hopefuls on the path to victory, and although Robert Lewandowski pulled one back for the visitors, Schalke did not falter and stayed strong to claim all three points.

Dortmund came out as the side enjoying more possession at the start of Saturday's derby clash, but Jurgen Klopp's men struggled to make the most of the ball and were ineffective against a resolute backline. Schalke, meanwhile, sat back and waited for the chance to hit on the break; and it was soon rewarded as it surged into the lead.

With just 12 minutes on the clock, Marco Hoger's well-placed pass opened up the game for Atsuto Uchida on the right flank. The Japanese full back was impeccable in controlling the ball, and his low cross found Draxler in the box, who finished expertly on the half-volley to give Schalke the advantage.

There were chances for both teams to add to the scoresheet, in what was a frenetic, fiercely contested first half. Lukasz Piszczek released Jakub Blaszczykowski behind the defense, but the Polish forward dragged his effort just wide of the post to squander the opportunity for the equalizer. At the other end, Dortmund's attacking starlet Mario Gotze suddenly found himself thrust into the role of defensive savior, clearing off the line to stop Joel Matip's header from becoming the second Schalke strike.

It was a momentary reprieve, however, as BVB was once more punished for some slack marking in its own area. Uchida was once more the architect on the right, after some fluid build-up play; and with Dortmund's center backs nowhere to be found, Huntelaar gleefully took advantage of the space with a towering header that doubled the hosts' lead.

With just over 30 minutes to play, Dortmund was thrown a lifeline. Playing once again on the back of the Schalke defensive line, Lewandowski this time judged his run to perfection and the offside flag stayed down as he received Bender's pass. One-on-one, the Polish star kept his cool to slide the ball past Timo Hildebrand and bring his side back into the match.

The goal was the cue for BVB to throw everything into attack, as it desperately sought something from the encounter. Schalke, however, stayed strong at the back, and continued to pose a threat on the counter; it took another big save from Weidenfeller to stop Teemu Pukki adding a third as Dortmund left more and more men upfield.

Farfan was then left with his head in his hands, blazing over from close after being handed a rebound that just had to be the game's deciding strike. The action continued until the final minutes, but as the dust settled it was Schalke which remained out in front as it claimed a valuable derby victory.

Despite the defeat, Dortmund holds on to second place after Mainz's 1-0 defeat of Bayer Leverkusen. Schalke, meanwhile, currently finds itself in the Champions League places as it leapfrogs Eintracht Frankfurt into fourth, although its rival for the European competition has a game in hand.

Bayern Munich 3-2 Fortuna Dusseldorf: Boateng completes brilliant Bavarian comeback

    262034hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich was made to work hard to record a 3-2 victory over Fortuna Dusseldorf at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.

Mathis Bolly gave the visitors a shock lead, but the Bavarians fought back, with Thomas Muller equalizing just before the break. Nonetheless, Andreas Lambertz put his side back in front, only for Franck Ribery and Jerome Boateng to score decisive late goals.

Unsurprisingly, it was Bayern who made the stronger start to the match, but for all of its territorial advantage, it was unable to craft an opportunity of note, spare a Bastian Schweinsteiger shot that was deflected well wide.

Then, the unthinkable happened. Johannes van den Bergh got down the left, delivered a great cross to Andreas Lambertz who nodded it into the path of Bolly, and he steered the ball home with his first ever Bundesliga shot.

It had been a frustrating afternoon for Bayern, who was uncharacteristically sloppy in possession, but it began to craft out an incredible number of chances, all of which were inexplicably squandered.

David Alaba's cross somehow evaded both Schweinsteiger and Muller at the far post and was put behind for a corner, from which Mario Mandzukic headed at Fabian Giefer.

The former Bayer Leverkusen keeper then made a fantastic stop to deny another Mandzukic header, but his parry presented Muller with a seemingly unmissable tap-in, only for the Germany star to lift it over the bar from a matter of inches.

Moments later, Franck Ribery got down the left and pulled the ball back to Toni Kroos, who slid in and drove wide, before the Frenchman fooled a host of defenders with some great trickery and crossed to the far post, where Mandzukic contrived to miss the ball entirely when he should have buried it.

Bayern was looking more dangerous from set pieces, and Daniel Van Buyten saw a header cleared off the line after meeting a Kroos delivery. Philipp Lahm picked up the loose ball and found Muller at the near post, who nodded it across the face of goal and wide.

Van Buyten had another effort brilliantly denied by Giefer, and the ball found its way to Schweinsteiger, who finished well, only to see the linesman's flag correctly deny him a goal.

Eventually, though, Dusseldorf's resistance gave out. Lahm picked up the ball on the right, drifted inside and found Muller, who drove it across Giefer and into the bottom corner. It was no less that Bayern deserved, and parity was ensured at the break.

Jupp Heynckes' side picked up where they left off after the restart, with Ribery darting down the left and driving the ball across the face of goal, only for the ball to evade every red shirt, while Mandzukic and Jerome Boateng sent headed opportunities wide.

Dusseldorf was getting men back brilliantly, while Giefer made another great save, this time from Lahm, and its resilience paid off. As Bayern got bodies forward, the ball broke to Lambertz, who kept his cool and swept it home.

The lead was short-lived, though. Ribery and Claudio Pizarro exchanged passes on the edge the box, and the Frenchman found rare space and finished well.

The hosts were within inches of a winner seven minutes from time when Mario Gomez struck the bar after a great free kick from Schweinsteiger, before Ribery was denied by Giefer when through on goal.

They did not have to wait much longer, though. Lahm's cross found Boateng in the box, and the Germany international rose highest to net his first ever Bayern goal.

Barcelona 2-0 Deportivo La Coruna: Alexis and Messi earn Blaugrana morale-boosting win

    262133hp2.jpg

Barcelona got back to winning ways in La Liga with a 2-0 victory over Deportivo at Camp Nou on Saturday.

The Catalans recovered from their 2-1 win reverse at Real Madrid last weekend, as Alexis Sanchez struck the opening goal of the game during a dominant first half for the hosts, who should have been out of sight by halftime.

But despite the Blaugrana's tempo dropping considerably during the second half, Deportivo was not able to add any sort of offensive punch, and Lionel Messi emerged from the bench to clinch the game with a well-worked goal with two minutes remaining.

Messi was joined on the bench by Andres Iniesta, as interim coach Jordi Roura looked to rotate his squad ahead of its crucial Champions League clash with AC Milan midweek.

All the early momentum belonged to the Blaugrana. Daniel Alves was the first to test Daniel Aranzubia in the visitors’ goal with a low shot that was turned away at the near post. The Brazilian then put Cesc Fabregas in the clear with a clever ball over the top, but after bringing the ball down beautifully, the midfielder made a hash of his finish and blasted over the bar.

David Villa was denied by an excellent challenge from Silvio, before Aranzubia was called into action again to divert a deflected Cristian Tello effort onto the post, as Barca kept piling on the pressure.

With 24 minutes on the clock, Villa spurned a golden opportunity when he clipped right at Aranzubia from point blank range, with Tello also denied by the Deportivo keeper from the rebound. It seemed like Barca would end the first half frustrated but, six minutes before the interval, it found the breakthrough when Alves’ exquisite cross was nodded in by Sanchez despite the best efforts of Aranzubia.

Barca’s momentum tailed off considerably in the second half, as Deportivo’s revitalized ranks at the back held firm, rendering its tiki-taka game impotent.
Roura responded by introducing Messi for Villa just past the hour mark, with Iniesta soon to follow as Thiago made way.

But chances remained at a premium as the game approached its closing stages. Carles Puyol received the first booking of the game with 20 minutes remaining for coming in late on Javier Camunas. With just over a quarter of an hour to go, Aranzubia pulled off another fine save to deny substitute Iniesta from point blank range, with Messi’s rebound correctly chalked off for offside.

But with two minutes to go, a scintillating combination between Sanchez and Messi saw the latter dink the ball stylishly over Aranzubia to finally wrap up the points for the hosts after what was a poor second half.

La Liga is more difficult to win than Champions League, says Alves

    229179hp2.jpg

The Blaugrana fullback says he believes winning the Spanish domestic league is a tougher challenge than winning the Champions League Barcelona defender Dani Alves says winning the Liga is more difficult than securing the Champions League trophy.

Alves made the comments after his side's 2-0 win over Deportivo on Saturday lifted Tito Vilanova's men 14 points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid, with Barca now preparing for the second leg of its Champions League tie against AC Milan on Tuesday.

"For me, it is more difficult to win the league, and thus more valuable, because everything is spread over 38 games," the 29-year-old told reporters. "To be champions and winning means so much to people, making it a very important competition.

"Every competition has its own value, and talking about the importance of the Champions League should not detract that of the league's either."

The Catalan giant hosts Massimiliano Allegri's men in a make-or-break encounter to continue their European adventure in midweek, and Alves is hopeful the team has left its recent troubles behind.

"Everything that has been happening lately is mental. When things begin to go negative, sometimes we just have to cover our ears and not let such circumstances influence us.

"Not conceding goals tonight gives us confidence. It's been a while since we've been able to recall this feeling. The goal today was to get a win, in order to put ourselves on the right track for Tuesday."

The Camp Nou outfit will have to fight back from a 2-0 deficit after the first leg.

Schalke has announced that defender Benedikt Howedes has accepted a contract extension that could keep him with the German side until 2017.

The 25-year-old defender has been one of Schalke's most consistent performers this season, and has formed the bedrock of the defensive line since joining the club as a youth player in 2001.

The club's official Twitter account posted a message confirming the deal, saying: "We are pleased about Benedikt Howedes' contract extension until 2017."

Club boss Horst Heldt added: "Benedikt is one of the faces of our club.

Barcelona is the best team in the world, says Galliani

    213403hp2.jpg

The AC Milan CEO has claimed that the Catalan side is the best team in the world, despite the Rossoneri defeating it in the first leg of their Champions League clash AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani has expressed his admiration for Barcelona, claiming that it is the best team in the world despite his own side's first-leg win against it in their Champions League tie.

Galliani heaped praise upon Barcelona, and said it remains the best team in the world regardless of some disappointing recent results.

"We'll see [our quality] against the best team in the world," he told reporters. "It is one of the greatest games that we have played this year. We are anxious about the potential absences of Pazzini and Mexes, but we won't have regrets if we have to play without anyone."

And Galliani acknowledged the importance of ensuring Milan's continued involvement in the competition, adding: "The Camp Nou will be watched worldwide, and it is essential for us to get back in the Champions League again next year."

The 68-year-old also insisted that Milan will aim to play its own game against Barcelona and believes his side will triumph over the Spanish giants.

"We won't look to man the barricades, we will play our game," he said. "I'm rooting for my side, but Barcelona will want to return strongly after playing poorly in Milan. They may have had a drop [in form], but the Blaugrana remain the strongest in the world."

Galliani also emphasised the importance of ensuring a good end to their Serie A season, adding: "From January to June, my goal is to be league champions and it has been since I got here.

"I'm here to finish first. I don't ever play for second place, or for third."

:cool:Messi breaks world record with goal against Deportivo

    262171hp2.jpg

The Argentine has become the only player in football history to have netted in 17 consecutive league games following his late strike at Camp Nou on Saturday night
Lionel Messi's late strike for Barcelona at home to Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday night saw the Argentine set a new world record for consecutive league goals in the top flight.

The goal, Barca's second in the 2-0 win over the Galicians, means Messi has netted in 17 straight Liga games, bettering the previous mark of 16, set by Teodor Peterek.

Peterek had scored 22 goals in 16 consecutive league matches in the Polish First Division way back in 1937-38.

Messi, who recently surpassed 200 goals in La Liga, now has 40 in the Primera Division this term, a total which would have been enough to win the Pichichi prize for the top scorer in every single season except the last one - which he himself claimed.

Cristiano Ronaldo previously held the record for scoring in consecutive games in La Liga with 10, a mark long since surpassed by the Argentine.
