Germany 4-1 Kazakhstan: Gotze scores again as qualification edges ever closer for Low's men

    266906hp2.jpg

Germany moved a step closer to the 2014 World Cup with a 4-1 defeat of Kazakhstan in their qualifier at the Grundig Stadium on Tuesday.

The scoreline barely reflected the dominance of Joachim Low's men, who piled on chance after chance, but were denied further goals by the woodwork and some excellent goalkeeping from Andrei Sidelnikov on multiple occasions.

A blistering 10-minute spell in the first half saw Marco Reus, Mario Gotze and Ilkay Gundogan all get their names on the scoresheet, but a terrible mistake from Manuel Neuer early in the second-half allowed Heinrich Schmidtgal to give Kazakhstan some consolation.

After a one-sided second half, Reus rounded off the scoring at the death with his second goal, to give Germany a seemingly unassailable eight-point lead at the top of the Group C standings.

Low persisted with Gotze in the false-nine role he filled so effectively in the reverse fixture, with Reus, Thomas Muller and Mesut Ozil making up the rest of the home side’s front four.

The first chance of the game would surprisingly fall to the visitors eight minutes in, as Sergei Ostapenko glanced a header wide from a good position inside the area.
But Germany responded almost instantly, when Ozil teed up Gundogan for a shot that was placed the wrong side of the post.

The superiority of die Mannschaft over their opponents was clear for all to see, and after a few half-chances went begging, Gundogan thought he had given his side the lead, but his well-struck drive from the edge of the area cracked off the inside of the post.

But the opener would eventually arrive after 23 minutes. Ozil fed Reus, who took his time to manufacture space for himself at the top of the box, before belting an effort neatly into the bottom corner.Gotze would double Germany’s advantage with a tap-in four minutes later, but his goal owed much to the work of Philipp Lahm, whose barnstorming run down the right put the opportunity right on a silver platter.

Kazakhstan barely had time to dust itself off before Germany hit it again. Ozil was the provider once more, pivoting on the right to deliver towards Gundogan inside the area, who did just enough to force the ball over the line ahead of his marker. The 22-year-old midfielder certainly was not shy to have a shot, and with half time looming, nearly added his second goal with a series of fakes at the top of the box that ended with a shot that whistled narrowly over.

But barely two minutes into the second half, the visitors were gifted an unlikely goal when Manuel Neuer dribbled Per Mertesacker’s pass straight into a crowd of Kazakhstan players, lost the ball, and allowed Schmidtgal time to stroke into an empty net.

Marcel Schmelzer went very close just after the hour mark with a drive that glanced off the outside of the post, but Germany, despite keeping Kazakhstan squarely under their thumb, was perhaps lacking the cutting edge of their first half exploits.

And it seemed like the fourth goal would elude the Germans after an incredible sequence on 72 minutes, where Sidelnikov denied Gotze and Muller from in close, with Reus hitting the post with the rebound, and Khedira’s follow-up also touched onto the woodwork by the Kazakh keeper.Valeriy Korobkin nearly made things interesting with a low shot that deflected out off the post, but Sidelnikov was kept busy to the very end, denying Ozil and Muller from close range.

But finally, in stoppage time, Germany would get its fourth, as Gundogan threaded in Reus, who made no mistake and rounded off an enjoyable night for the home side.

Montenegro 1-1 England: Three Lions' World Cup qualifying hopes dented after blowing lead

    266975hp2.jpg

England was held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Group H leader Montenegro in their UEFA World Cup qualifier in Podgorica on Tuesday.

Wayne Rooney struck early in the first half, but the hosts came back at the Three Lions in the second, with Dejan Damjanovic converting a 76th-minute equalizer.

The result sees England stay second in Group H, two points behind Montenegro, with the next qualifying action for the British coming in September.

Roy Hodgson rung the changes from England’s 8-0 win at San Marino on Friday as captain Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson, Ashley Cole, Michael Carrick, James Milner and Danny Welbeck all returned to the starting lineup.

The hosts, meanwhile, were without the suspended Milorad Pekovic and Savo Pavicevic, with midfield duo Nikola Drincic and Branko Boskovic also out through injury; however, key men Mirko Vucinic and Stevan Jovetic were fit and ready to spearhead their side.

The last time the Three Lions visited Podgorica, a Fabio Capello-led side had let a two-goal lead slip, with Rooney receiving his marching orders for a stamp in the second half. The Manchester United forward seemed determined to make amends for that, and he struck the post with a crafty chip from distance after just two minutes.

But a determined Rooney would not be denied at the second time of asking, as, four minutes later, the 27-year-old took full advantage of non-existent marking at the far post to head home from a corner.

It was the perfect start for the visitors – and more was to come. On 24 minutes, England almost doubled the lead as Welbeck surged up the pitch on the counterattack, eventually falling just short of an inswinging cross from Rooney.

Welbeck threatened again on the stroke of halftime as he broke into the Montenegro penalty area, only to be brought down by Stefan Savic. Rather than awarding a penalty, however, referee Jonas Olsson showed Welbeck a yellow card for diving.

The hosts came out from the halftime break with a different outlook, and they almost grabbed an instant equalizer after Jovetic’s far-post header shook the side-netting on 47 minutes.

Marko Basa then came close with a header of his own before Jovetic and Vucinic fired wide and over, respectively to maintain the pressure. The Juventus forward came even closer 12 minutes later as he curled a controlled shot just wide Joe Hart’s left post.

Hart was then tested by a 20-yard strike from Jovetic, before a Gerrard deflection sent the ball crashing against the England post, but the Three Lions could not hold on for much longer and Damjanovic poked home after a goal-mouth scramble on 76 minutes.

England duly responded and pushed for a winner, with Gerrard forcing Mladen Bozovic into action twice late on.

The score remained level, though, and an uphill task now awaits the Three Lions if they want to avoid a World Cup qualification playoff.

Wales 1-2 Croatia: Recent progress halted by late Eduardo winner

A late strike from Eduardo sealed a 2-1 World Cup qualifying win for Croatia to keep his team in contention at the top of Group A and in turn break Wales' hearts after a battling performance.

Gareth Bale put Chris Coleman's side ahead with a first-half penalty but it was impressive performances from goalkeeper Boaz Myhill and youngster Jonathan Williams that really stood out for the Welsh side. However, despite their best endeavors, they could not keep the visitors at bay all game as Dejan Lovren equalized in the 77th minute with a wonderful strike before Eduardo won the game with three minutes to play.

After a fairly even opening 10 minutes, a lapse in concentration nearly gifted the visitors an early lead but they were rescued by Myhill. After a poor Croatia set piece Wales felt like the damage had past but it had not banked on Ivan Rakitic, the Sevilla man keeping the ball in play and delivering a perfect cross onto the head of Eduardo but the former Arsenal man headed straight at Myhill.

Eight minutes later, the home side was ahead through its talisman, Bale. Andy King released Joe Ledley on the right-hand side - he broke into the penalty area but his run was stopped by a clumsy tackle from Lovren and a spot kick was awarded. Bale stepped up and calmly fired past Stipe Pletikosa to give Wales the lead for the first time in this qualifying campaign.

With 10 minutes of the half remaining, Wales very nearly doubled the lead. Ben Davies flicked on a Myhill goal kick which released Hal Robson-Kanu to race towards the Croatian penalty area. The Reading man picked out Bale on the edge of the penalty area with a perfect pass but his shot was well saved by Pletikosa.

The visitors had not really tested Myhill since the opening minutes but as the second half began the West Brom keeper was called into action to deny Eduardo on two occasions as the Welsh goal led a charmed life.

Myhill's second save from the former Arsenal man was sensational, the forward deflecting a low shot from close range but somehow the goalkeeper reacted brilliantly to tip it over the bar and frustrate the visitors once more.

With 13 minutes to play, Croatia's domination of possession finally paid off as Lovren fired them level with a swerving drive from distance. Wales had remained resolute to block a Mario Mandzukic shot but the striker rolled the loose ball into the defender and he thundered a 25-yard strike past Myhill.

And with three minutes to go Eduardo broke Welsh hearts with a poacher's effort inside the penalty area. Substitute Ivica Olic played a dangerous cross in from the left and the striker controlled the ball on his chest before firing between Myhill's legs to seal the win for the visitors.

Northern Ireland 0-2 Israel: Late strikes doom Michael O'Neill's men

    266965hp2.jpg

Northern Ireland suffered yet another defeat in UEFA World Cup qualifying Group F, as it went down 2-0 to Israel at Windsor Park.

The hosts were unlucky to not be ahead in the first half after Steven Davis saw his shot blocked brilliantly by Dudu Aouate, and the Green and White Army enjoyed the better chances of a goalless opening period. Their good work was undone in the second half, though, as goals in the 77th and 84th minutes, respectively, from Lior Rafaelov and Eden Ben Basat secured a priceless victory for the visitors.

Michael O’Neill came into this game without a win as manager of Northern Ireland and made just one change, with the suspended Kyle Lafferty replaced by Martin Paterson up front. Meanwhile, the Israelis also had a striker ruled out by a ban, with Tomer Hemed forced to sit out having scored seven goals in his previous seven international matches.

The game began in bitterly cold conditions, and it was the away side that settled quickest, with Itay Schechter hitting the post with an early header at the near post.

It took until the 19th minute for either side to create another opening, as Davis’ delightful pass nearly found Paterson in the box, but a timely intervention by Tal Ben Haim thwarted the chance.

The home side bgean to enjoy a good amount of possession as Israel tried to soak up the pressure, with Chris Brunt’s set pieces creating some problems for the visitors.

The hosts came close to opening the scoring in the 30th minute, as Paterson seized upon a defensive error to play a square ball to Davis, but his shot was saved brilliantly by Aouate, with the follow-ups from Brunt and Aaron Hughes also blocked.

The visitors started the second half in a more attacking vein and forced Roy Carroll to make a reaction save in the 53rd minute from a fierce Maor Melikson shot.

Northern Ireland then had another superb chance just five minutes later, as Davis received the ball from just outside the penalty area and cannoned a shot off the crossbar.

Somewhat against the run of play, it was the away side that took the lead, as a slick passing move caught Northern Ireland’s defense napping, and Rafaelov was able to slot home.

The home side tried its best to find a late equalizer but conceded again after Ben Basat’s superb finish and slumped to yet another disappointing defeat. Israel kept pace with Portugal, a 2-0 winner over Azerbiajan, and remains in second place behind Russia, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo's side on goal differential.

Netherlands 4-0 Romania: Van Persie surpasses Cruyff goal tally in comfortable win

    266955hp2.jpg

Netherlands recorded a 4-0 win over Romania in Tuesday's 2014 World Cup qualifier at the Amsterdam ArenA, getting two goals from Robin van Persie to remain perfect in six games in UEFA's Group D.

Rafael van der Vaart gifted the Dutch an early lead with a low shot form the edge of the area, before van Persie made it two after the break with a good header from Arjen Robben's cross. The Manchester United man doubled his personal tally halfway through the second half when he converted a spot kick, with Jeremain Lens making it four in the closing minutes of the game.

The home side started the match with attacking intentions, and came close to opening the scoring early on on a number of occasions. Kevin Strootman first saw his shot saved by Costel Pantilimon, though, before van Persie aimed too high from close range after a superb cross from Lens.

Netherlands did grab the lead after 12 minutes, after yet again some good work from Lens. The PSV winger reached Van Persie on the edge of the box with a low cross from the right, who then laid the ball off for Van der Vaart. The Hamburg star didn't hesitate and beat Pantilimon with a right-footed shot from 18 yards out.

Romania got back into the match after Oranje's early opener, and almost restored parity after 38 minutes of play. Right winger Adrian Popa tried his luck with a low shot from a narrow angle, but Kenneth Vermeer pulled off a superb save to keep his side in the lead.

The Dutch got a good chance to double their lead shortly after the break following some sloppy defending from Florin Gardos. The Steaua Bucharest defender failed to clear a cross from Strootman, but Van Persie's shot lacked accuracy, allowing Pantilimon to make an easy save.

The Oranje scored their second goal of the game shortly after, though. Robben reached van Persie with a perfect cross after going past his marker down the left, and the forward beat the Romanian goalkeeper with a subtle header.

Lens continued to cause the guests all kinds of trouble with his dribbles down the right, and the referee had no other choice but to award Netherlands a spot kick after Gardos fouled the PSV attacker. Van Persie stepped up to take it and coolly slotted home to surpass Johan Cruyff's Netherlands goal tally and make it 3-0 with his 34th international goal.

Things deteriorated even more for the away side in the closing stages of the game when Lens added his name to the score sheet. Pantilimon failed to hold on to Adam Maher's powerful shot, and the PSV star tapped home from close range to pour even more salt in Romania's wounds.

The Netherlands sits atop of Group D with 18 points from six games, while Romania is in third with 10 points.

Serbia 2-0 Scotland: Defeat ends Tartan Army's World Cup dream

    266958hp2.jpg

Scotland's hopes of reaching Brazil 2014 were all but ended by Serbia thanks to Filip Djuricic’s double.

Two defensive errors from Alan Hutton allowed the Heerenveen forward to score twice in five second half minutes, leaving Gordon Strachan’s side bottom of Qualifcation Group A with just two points from six games.

Both sides tasted defeat to regional rivals in their last game and each manager decided to make six changes to their teams, with Gordon Strachan handing debuts to Liam Bridcutt and George Boyd.

Serbia was in on goal inside a minute, a ball over the top falling to Filip Duricic who was charged down by goalkeeper David Marshall.

Marshall them fumbled a shot from Dusan Basta after nine minutes, but he recovered in time to collect the ball.

Basta was involved again four minutes later, crossing for skipper Branislav Ivanovic who headed weakly past the post.

Marshall was called into action again when Filip Djuricic received a long ball from Matija Nastasic, running into the box before rolling a shot to the goalkeeper’s left hand side, though pressure from Grant Hanley meant the effort was a weak one and the Cardiff City stopper was able to save easily.

Zoran Tosic then pulled a shot across Marshall’s goal from inside the area, his left footed effort bouncing wide of the far post.

Clever play from Whittaker had Boyd inside the six yard box but his pass back across the goal was blocked by a defender with Scotland starting to enjoy a bit more possession going forward.

Scotland started the second half much more brightly and had the ball in the back of the net shortly after the restart, Naismith sweeping the ball into the net from 16 yards from a pass from substitute Charlie Adam, but the Everton forward was correctly ruled offside.

A good passing interchange between Fejsa and Tosic saw the former send in a raking strike from 20 yards out that Crawford had to get down to save.

Rhodes should have put Scotland ahead after an hour, Rhodes charging down a weak pass in the Serbia back line before hitting a poor shot right at Stojkovic from just inside the box.

Serbia punished Scotland and Rhodes for that miss seconds later, charging up the park before Tosic, who had been lost completely by Hutton, played a pass into Fejsa. Fejsa was tackled in the box and Djuricic collected the ball four yards out, coolly turning to face the goal and slamming the ball past a helpless Marshall.

Another Hutton error gave Serbia their second goal five minutes later, losing the ball to Tomovic who played in Djuricic for his second.

Serbia almost added a third in the second minute of stoppage time as Ivanovic dragged a long range effort just past the post after Basta played the captain in following a bursting run.

Azerbaijan 0-2 Portugal: Portugal improves World Cup hopes without Ronaldo

    266871hp2.jpg

Portugal kept its World Cup qualifying hopes alive with a vital 2-0 win over Azerbaijan in Baku to move just one point behind Group F leader Russia.

The visiting side dominated from the off, but was forced to wait until the hour mark to take the initiative as Bruno Alves powered a header past Kamran Agayev at the near post before second half substitute Hugo Almeida added a second with 10 minutes remaining.

Danny saw an effort comfortably saved by Agayev and Joao Moutinho fired over the bar from distance as Portugal looked to net early on in an encounter the team needed to win.

Moutinho flashed another shot wide from the edge of the 18-yard box and Helder Postiga forced a good save out of Agayev from distance as the visiting team pressed Azerbaijan early on.

Postiga directed his header goal bound having met Vieirinha's cross, but Agayev was equal to the striker's effort as Portugal maintained its intense start midway through the first half.

Azerbaijan captain Rashad Sadygov was forced into a superb last ditch challenge to deny Postiga, while Miguel Veloso saw his curling free kick drift agonizingly wide as the home team continued to frustrate Paulo Bento's side.

Alves came the closest to breaking the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes, but the powerful center back could only see his free kick rebound off the post as Portugal struggled to find a way past Agayev.

The Azerbaijan goalkeeper endured pushing away Postiga's close range diving header as the first half drew to a close with the score at 0-0.

Azerbaijan's evening was made that much more difficult in the 55th minute when striker Rauf Aliyev was given his marching orders for a second booking as referee Andre Marriner deemed his elbow on Raul Meireles worthy of a red card.

Portugal looked to make the numerical advantage count almost instantaneously, but Meireles could only flash his effort from a tight angle wide of the far post before being substituted.

The Seleccao continued to press the home side and took the initiative in the 63rd minute as Alves headed a Moutinho corner past Agayev at the near post.

Portugal pushed for a second and was rewarded with 10 minutes remaining when Fabio Coentrao pushed forward and expertly picked out Almeida at the back post to head into an empty net to secure all three points.

The 2-0 win for Portugal moves it to within one point of Group F leader Russia, albeit having played two games more, and all but ends Azerbaijan's hopes of qualifying for Brazil 2014.

Malta 0-2 Italy: Balotelli double enough for challenged Azzurri

    266940hp2.jpg

Mario Balotelli scored both goals as Italy moved three points clear at the top of UEFA World Cup qualifying Group B with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Malta at the Ta' Qali Stadium on Tuesday.

The enigmatic forward opened the scoring from the spot just seven minutes in after AC Milan teammate Stephan El Shaarawy had been sent tumbling in the area.

Malta could have responded in kind, but Michael Mifsud saw his penalty well saved by Gianluigi Buffon, who had felled Andre Schembri in the area, and it proved a costly miss as Balotelli struck again right on the stroke of halftime to break the hosts' game resistance.

Malta had gone into the game without a home win in a competitive international for seven years, but for long stretches of a low-quality encounter it looked in no way inferior to a side positioned 142 places higher in the FIFA rankings, with Mifsud looking particularly menacing up front early on.

It was Italy that opened the scoring, though, with Balotelli slotting home from the spot in characteristically cool fashion, after Luke Dimech had clumsily upended El Shaarawy just inside the area.

Italy’s all-Milan frontline very nearly combined for a second goal just moments later. El Shaarawy whipped a shot just wide after being put into space by a back-heeled lay-off from Balotelli.

Malta should have levelled matters 16 minutes in when Buffon took Schembri down as the attacker tried to round the Juventus shot-stopper. The Azzurri skipper avoided a red card as Schembri had been going away from the goal, and that proved crucial, with Buffon making amends for his error by parrying Mifsud’s well-struck but poorly directed spot-kick away to safety.

While Malta’s record goalscorer only had himself to blame for failing to convert from 12 yards out, he was desperately unfortunate to see a thunderous long-range effort crash against the crossbar with Buffon beaten.

Riccardo Montolivo then went close for Italy, lofting the ball onto the roof of the net after taking an El Shaarawy cross in his stride, but Malta proved to be incredibly game for the challenge, and Clayton Failla called Buffon into action once more with a long-range free kick.

The hosts were rocked by the concession of a second goal right on the stroke of halftime that underlined the clear gulf in class in terms of finishing. Leonardo Bonucci played a sublime ball over the top that Mattia De Sciglio killed wonderfully well before laying the ball off for the supporting Balotelli, who calmly placed the ball past Justin Haber and into the far right corner.

    Congratulations Spain!!!

France 0-1 Spain: Pedro the hero as world champions earn priceless Paris win

    soc_g_pedro_gb1_576_576.jpg

Spain took control of UEFA World Cup qualifying Group I thanks to a 1-0 win over France at Stade de France.

Pedro scored the only goal of the game just before the hour mark from a Nacho Monreal cross as reward for a great deal of pressure imposed by the defending world champion. France, meanwhile, finished with 10 men as Paul Pogba saw red late in the second half.

For all of La Roja’s dominance of possession, though, there had been only a few suggestions they would be able to break their hosts’ resistance before a typically visionary cross-field pass from Xavi released Monreal down the left. Having sprinted in behind the French rearguard, the Arsenal defender centred for Pedro to scramble past Hugo Lloris.

Those two protagonists had been had the heart of some first-half controversy, as the attacker went down under a challenge from the goalkeeper in the box, yet play was waved on despite some contact being apparent.

As early as the fifth minute Spain had shown intent, yet Xavi inexplicably scooped over from just six yards out after being teed up by Monreal.

France had the next-clearest openings in the first half, but the much-criticized Karim Benzema could not profit from Christophe Jallet’s energetic raid down the right, while Franck Ribery missed the hosts' best chance as he was thwarted by Victor Valdes after being released by Mathieu Valbuena.

After the break, the threat from the hosts was more muted, and Lloris had to be sharp to touch over from Andres Iniesta prior to Pedro’s breakthrough, which changed the dynamic of the game.

Blaise Matuidi had an opportunity to equalize after being set up by Ribery, but Valdes got his body firmly behind that Paris Saint-Germain man’s drive, and Raphael Varane could not quite scramble home from a corner kick.

Even after Pogba had been dismissed for two yellow cards in the space of a couple of minutes, France offered a threat, with Ribery blasting a shot narrowly past the frame.

Spain dominated possession until the end, yet aside from the occasional raid from Jesus Navas down the right flank, the visitors were largely toothless with regards a threat on Lloris’ goal until the Tottenham keeper denied Sergio Busquets in stoppage time.

Ultimately that would not matter as La Roja inflicted the first competitive defeat upon Didier Deschamps’ France, which means they have leapfrogged the hosts into the summit of Group I. A one-point advantage offers Spain little insurance, yet the defending world champions are now firm favorites to qualify for Brazil 2014 outright if it can win its final five matches, with Les Bleus facing the prospect of a playoff.

'My dream is to play at the top level,' says Liverpool target Tom Ince

    225644hp2.jpg

The Blackpool winger, who has been the subject of sustained interest from the Reds, expresses his ambition to play at a Premier League club when he is ready to do so Blackpool winger Tom Ince says that it is "my dream to play at the top level" amid continued interest from Liverpool.

The Reds, who let the youngster leave their ranks in 2011, have been chasing their former charge after his fine form in the Championship and, when he is ready to do so, the England Under-21 international is keen to test himself at such a club.

"My dream is to play at the top level and to achieve my ambitions but it's all about timing and patience, so when you get to the top you are ready to go and not jumping too soon," Ince explained to reporters.

"There was something about Liverpool coming in for me in January and to go to a top club like that would have been fantastic but I have to realise it's about playing football and I don't think any of the moves were close.

"It's great having that speculation and it's very flattering. To have teams of that magnitude saying you're a decent player, it gives me a smile and flatters me a lot."

Since leaving Anfield, the 21-year-old has blossomed at Bloomfield Road, where he is now manager by his father, former England star Paul Ince.

"For me it's about putting my faith in Blackpool because without that club, my team-mates and the fans I wouldn't be Football League Young Player of the Year and the player I am now," the youngster enthused.

Del Bosque: Spain dispelled doubts in France victory

    243385hp2.jpg

La Roja's coach was pleased that his team managed to prove some of its doubters wrong with a confident performance against Didier Deschamp's side at Stade de France.Spain boss Vicente del Bosque believes his side proved its doubters wrong by beating France 1-0 in their World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.

The reigning world champion produced an accomplished display in Paris to seal all three points, as Pedro scored the game's only goal in the 58th minute. Del Bosque praised his team following the win that took La Roja back to the top of Group I, with three games left to play.

"People always have doubts. So this result is important," Del Bosque told AS after the final whistle. "We showed conviction to stick to our style.

"We played very well. We were a bit messy when they had 10 men but everyone played very well."

The Spain coach singled out Alvaro Arbeloa for particular praise, after he kept Franck Ribery quiet for much of the game.

"Arbeloa was fantastic up against Ribery," Del Bosque said

Spain now sits one point ahead of France in Group I. The next set of World Cup qualification matches resumes in September.

Low: Neuer is one of the best keepers in the world

    194382hp2.jpg

The Germany coach defended the Bayern Munich shot-stopper after his 47th minute howler prevented his country from keeping a clean sheet against Kazakhstan Germany coach Joachim Low has backed national team keeper Manuel Neuer after the 26-year-old conceded a soft goal in his side's 4-1 World Cup qualifying victory over Kazakhstan.

Three quickfire strikes from Marco Reus, Mario Gotze and Illkay Gundogan had effectively wrapped up the three points prior to Neuer's mistake, however.

"What I do not like is the way that Manuel Neuer got whistled after his mistake," Low told ARD. "He belongs to [the group of] the best keepers in the world and he made one mistake. I do not think it is sporting that he was made the subject of the fans' irony for the rest of the game," he added.

The 53-year-old also went on to discuss his side's performance throughout the tie.

"We lacked concentration during the second half," said the retired midfielder. "The first half was good and after the break we should have scored some more goals.

"But the game was already decided then. The Kazaks stood with ten players around their penalty area and did not want to play football."

Neuer also gave his take on his part in Kazakhstan's goal.

"I gave a present out today. I have to apologize to the team. I did not want to just kick the ball forward. But that is what I should have done," said the Bayern Munich shot-stopper.

Montenegro 1-1 England: Three Lions' World Cup qualifying hopes dented after blowing lead

RVP: United may be my last club

    robinvanpersiecelebspotlight_576x324.jpg

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie admits he may end his career at Old Trafford.

Van Persie, 29, signed for the Red Devils from Arsenal last summer on a four-year deal for £24 million. And while his current contract will only take him up to the age of 33, the Netherlands international says the way the likes of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are valued by the club could be enough to persuade him to commit himself to United for his final years.

"For the next few years I will be at Manchester United - and maybe longer. United could be my last club,'' he told told Dutch magazine Voetbal International.

"You have a number of clubs in Europe where older players can find it good, where they are valued. You used to have that at Juventus and AC Milan, Manchester United today is a good example. So who knows how long I will stay at the club."There is a new challenge for me every day at United. My development is an ongoing process. That gets an extra boost when you are surrounded by new coaches and team-mates, all with their own ideas, in a totally new environment.''

Van Persie has been in inspirational form for United for most of the season having hit 19 Premier League goals, however, he is going through something of a drought of late, scoring just once in his last ten matches for the club.

Madrid not lucky to draw Galatasaray - Ramos

    254023hp2.jpg

The Real Madrid stalwart says Fatih Terim's men deserve their place in the last eight of the Champions League, and claims the opening game will be pivotal to the outcome of the tie Sergio Ramos believes Real Madrid will need to take a first-leg advantage with it to Turkey as he insists Galatasaray will be formidable hosts.

Fatih Terim's side is considered the tournament's outsider but the Spain international feels the Turks pose a genuine threat to Madrid's challenge if they are allowed to register any away goals next week.

"We have to keep a clean sheet at home and score goals because I'm convinced that they're going to make it very difficult for us in Turkey," Ramos told Marca. "Being drawn against Galatasaray isn't a stroke of luck, far from it.

"You must never underestimate a team. They all deserve to be where they are."

Three of Jose Mourinho's former players will be looking to get one over on their former boss at the Bernabeu on Wednesday, and the fullback is under no illusions of the danger their opponents possess.

Ramos added: "Galatasaray have been strengthened by the arrivals of [Didier] Drogba and [Wesley] Sneijder but danger comes from the team as a whole, which is quite strong."
