AC Milan 4-2 Catania: Pazzini double maintains Champions League charge

    260425hp2.jpg

AC Milan came from behind to register a triumphant 4-2 victory against Catania at San Siro on Sunday, thanks in no small part to Giampaolo Pazzini's decisive contributions.

Fiorentina had ousted Massimiliano Allegri's men from third spot after their 3-0 win away to Sampdoria earlier on Sunday, ensuring San Siro carried an air of trepidation for the game against the Elefanti.

Stephan El Shaarawy was reunited with Mario Balotelli upfront after the latter returned from suspension, with Antonio Nocerino and Marco Amelia also handed rare starts as Milanre-mounted its bid for Champions League qualification next season.

The home side kicked proceedings off knowing the implications the result would hold on its European ambitions, and within two minutes had what the club felt was a cast-iron penalty appeal for a hand-ball by Nicola Legrottaglie in the penalty area, although the referee waved protests away.

Mattia Di Sciglio's yellow card for an over-zealous challenge down the flank typified Milan's sense of urgency, with Riccardo Montolivo becoming the first to test Catania's stand-in custodian Alberto Frison with a daisy-cutter which needed saving with some difficulty.

Balotelli then arrived the fraction of a second late to tap-in Ignazio Abate's tantalizing low cross, as the Rossoneri continued to up the pressure.

But in perfect defiance, it was Catania which took the lead against the run of play. Legrottaglie rose highest in the area to meet Francesco Lodi's perfect free kick, in what was the visiting side's first attempt on target. Suddenly, the Sicilians were all over Milan. Alejandro Gomez burst forward with intent, and Amelia had to push away his fierce pile driver at full stretch.

Sharply stirred by the shock of conceding, Milan swarmed back at its opponent. Kevin Prince-Boateng hit the crossbar with a stunning first-time volley, then Nocerino's follow up had to be parried by Frison. The 25-year-old keeper next continued his fantastic duel with Balotelli, turning the striker's menacing free kick around the post.

Alas for Frison, even his heroics could not deny Mathieu Flamini, the Frenchman pouncing on a rebound to emphatically tuck home a fierce angled drive on the stroke of halftime to take the wind out of Catania's sails.

The restart afforded Rolando Maran's embattled shot-stopper no respite, El Shaarawy keeping him on his toes with a few attempts from the edge of the box, before the Italy international took a tumble in the box which failed to convince match official Davide Massa.

Montolivo was denied at point-blank range, but for all the club's endeavor, the European wannabe was punished for another defensive lapse when a static rearguard failed to pick off a slide-rule pass for Gonzalo Bergessio, who siezed his opportunity to exquisitely chip Amelia.

El Shaarawy's subsequently scuffed his strike from a good position to sum up his side's woeful night in front of goal, and just as the crowd begin to acknowledge their team returning to the dressing rooms on the back of defeat, substitute Pazzini produced the simplest of finishes to bring San Siro to its feet in celebration.

The 28-year-old, benched in the wake of Balotelli's return, fully justified his introduction by firing Milan ahead for the first time all night. Gomez's cries for a foul were ignored as a raking clearance found its way to El Shaarawy. Breaking past his marker, the Milan top scorer was denied by Frison, but Pazzini pounced on the rebound to rifle in the winner.

Milan was not yet finished, and Balotelli picked himself up after being brought to a crude halt in the Catania area to rifle home from 12 yards.

    Wenger dismisses Paris Saint-Germain reports

    271778hp2.jpg

The 63-year-old, who has been tipped to replace Carlo Ancelotti, insists he will see out the remainder of his contract at Arsenal, which expires at the end of next season.Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has distanced himself from reports suggesting that he will replace Carlo Ancelotti at Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

Despite being set to guide PSG to the Ligue 1 title this season, Ancelotti is being tipped to leave the French capital at the end of the season in order to take over from Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid.

Wenger, who has been at Arsenal since October 1996, insists he will see out his contract with the north London club which expires at the end of next season.

"I have always respected my contracts and at my age I will not change anything," Wenger told reporters. "I am concentrated on the next match and I am already preparing for the next season."

Wenger guided his side to a 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Sunday as Theo Walcott's early strike was cancelled out by Robin van Persie's penalty.

With three Premier League matches remaining, Arsenal currently sits fourth, two points ahead of Tottenham which has a game in hand over its north London rival.

Carvalho: Madrid can turn around Dortmund tie

    230428hp2.jpg

The 34-year-old does not believe the Blancos' chances of making the final have suffered damage beyond repair and says victory over Atletico Madrid in the derby has sparked belief.

Real Madrid defender Ricardo Carvalho believes his teammates have what it takes to overturn the 4-1 deficit inflicted by Borussia Dortmund ahead of Tuesday's return leg in the Champions League.

Mourinho's men were humbled by the German giant at Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday, prompting many to believe the Blancos' chances of securing a 10th European cup (La Decima) had sustained irreversible damage.

However, Carvalho says his teammates are more than capable of netting the three goals necessary to keep alive their hopes of making May's Wembley final.

"We have to play at the level that we can and we know that we can score goals because we have top quality players, and we’ll also have to defend well," the defender told the club's official website. "It will be difficult because they have very good players and can score goals, but we can score three goals.

"We know how important it is for us and the club and we will give everything on the pitch on Tuesday. On Tuesday we have to play with more intensity. We did not play well, we did not play as a team and we were not at the level we can play at, but on Tuesday we have to try to win."

The 34-year-old played 90 minutes in the 2-1 victory over local rival Atletico Madrid on Saturday, and the former Chelsea defender has acknowledged the importance of going into Tuesday's semifinal on the back of a win.

"We played very well. Winning is always very important after a match that you have lost, and this was a derby," added Carvalho. "This win is very important for the team and we want to show the same attitude against Borussia to try to get to the final. It is good motivation."

Simeone laments 'missed opportunity' against Real Madrid

    253359hp2.jpg

The Argentine believes that his side played admirably against its cross-city rival but regrets the failure to take its chances in front of goal.Diego Simeone praised the efforts of his Atletico Madrid players but was left frustrated by his team's inability to score at least a second against Real Madrid.

Radamel Falcao gave los Rojiblancos an early lead but an own goal from Juanfran and an Angel Di Maria winner ensured that it was the visiting side that took all three points with a 2-1 win.

Speaking to journalists after the game, Simeone praised the performance of his team but confessed that the profligacy in front of goal had frustrated him.

"The merits do matter, but the goals are what count," the 42-year-old Argentine said. "They were more convincing in front of goal. We've had the match we needed to have, but we went without the result. It was a missed opportunity.

"The match started very well, but then they got their goal not long after ours. Regarding the performance, on the face of the way of playing and intention of winning, that was always there. For the first 30 minutes we played in the half of our rivals, but this is the grand thing in football, the ones who get the goals win."

The defeat leaves los Colchoneros six points behind Jose Mourinho's side in La Liga, but Simeone stressed that there will be other opportunities to overcome Real Madrid, with the Copa del Rey final offering his team a chance of redemption.

"There’s another chance in a short while, two next year and another two the next," the former Argentina midfielder added. "There will always be opportunities and hopefully we can win the most important game. We have another opportunity on the 17th May [the date of the final], which certainly many feel isn't possible, which is better for us."

Netzer: Gotze and Lewandowski exits will down Dortmund

    183587hp2.jpg

The Borussia Monchengladbach legend believes BVB can wave goodbye to any prospect of lifting silverware next season as two of their star men prepare to leave the club Former Germany midfielder Gunter Netzer believes Bayern Munich's signing of Mario Gotze and potential capture of Robert Lewandowski will end Borussia Dortmund's hopes of success next season.

Die Roten, who maintained their 20-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table with a 1-0 win over Freiburg on Saturday, having already secured the league title, could yet add the Champions League and DFB-Pokal to their list of honors this season.

And after the revelations Bayern have met Borussia Dortmund star Gotze's 37.5 million euros release clause, ahead of a summer move, Netzer expressed how impressed he was with the signing and his thoughts on the possibility of Robert Lewandowski following the same path from Signal Iduna Park to the Allianz Arena.

"One title is sure to be followed by two," he wrote in his Bild column. "Should Lewandowski leave Dortmund after Gotze, it would be a significant impairment. Of course they're capable of finding a success-promising substitution. However, they won't succeed with it initially, the quality of Gotze and Lewandowski is just too big.

"Pep Guardiola will be overjoyed with the personnel policies of his future club. But that was definitely a reason to go to Munich. This trainer, in conjunction with Gotze and Lewandowski, could lead to a long-standing dominance for Bayern."

Netzer then hailed the respective talents of Gotze and Lewandowski, stating his belief that the former of that pair is incomparable with any other young talent in world football.

"My spontaneous reaction to the transfer of Mario Gotze to Bayern was: 'What a deal!,'" the 68-year-old continued. "There is no young player who has this class and also demonstrates it everyday worldwide.

"The same also applies for Robert Lewandowski. He is a striker in the top category, a player who is a decisive factor for success. With his skills, he is one of the best attackers in the world and is therefore understandably Bayern's striker of choice. But he is also an object of desire for other great world clubs."

Both Bayern and BVB will bid to book their place in the Champions League final at Wembley when they face Barcelona and Real Madrid, respectively, in the second leg of their semifinal ties on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Barton wants to finish career at Marseille

    269601hp2.jpg

QPR boss Harry Redknapp has suggested the midfielder would be part of his plans next season, but the 30-year-old wants to stay with the Ligue 1 side beyond his loan spell Joey Barton is still hoping to stay at Olympique de Marseille, despite QPR manager Harry Redknapp indicating he would have the midfielder back in his squad.

The former Manchester City and Newcastle man made the loan move to France in August 2012, when Mark Hughes was in charge at Loftus Road.

Redknapp has suggested Barton could yet have a future with the relegation candidates, but the 30-year-old wants to stay in France beyond the end of his loan spell.

"I want to stay here but it does not depend on me," Barton told TF1 after Saturday's victory over Lorient. "I belong to another club. "I had a discussion with QPR and I might stay here, but the most important thing is to qualify for the Champions League. Then we can discuss my future.

"Everyone knows how much I love this club and if it were up to me I would finish my career here."

Redknapp admitted it might be difficult to convince Barton to return to QPR next season.

"Joey has done well," he said. "He’s had a great season for them. He’s a good player but, if you saw where Joey lived in Marseille, I think it would be very difficult to get him back."

Pepe told me I'd scored enough, reveals Lewandowski

    274955hp2.jpg

The striker admits his four-goal haul is yet to sink in and has warned BVB to finish off the job in the second leg this week Robert Lewandowski has revealed Real Madrid defender Pepe told him he had "scored enough" in Borussia Dortmund's 4-1 win in the first-leg of their Champions League semifinal last week.

The Poland striker produced an outstanding display as BVB ran out convincing winners in the first-leg of their Champions League semifinal, but Lewandowski has warned the tie is not over yet, as he bids to finish off los Blancos on Tuesday.

"If we don't play as well as we did in the second half, it will be difficult," the 24-year-old told polishfootballonline.com. "Real Madrid is a fantastic club and will definitely push us to play defensively. We have to look to score in Spain - that will make our job much easier.

"We have to play just as well in the return leg to show that this wasn't an accident.

Lewandowski then recalled a comment made by Pepe during the first leg and looked back on each of his four goals from the finest night of his career to date.

"During one of the last corner kicks, Pepe came up to me and said 'You've scored four goals already, don't you think that's enough?'" he recalled. "Each goal was different. The first one was from a great pass from Mario Gotze where I got away from Pepe and got my foot to the ball.

"For the second goal, I knew I wasn't offside so I quickly put the ball in at the near post. The third goal was automatic for me. I stopped Mats Hummels' shot, turned and coolly slotted into the top corner. In this situation, the first touch was the most important factor. The fourth was a penalty - nothing to comment on that."

"I am very proud but I think it will completely sink in after the season is over. We have made a huge step to make it to the final, but we are not there yet. I am very happy that we defeated Real Madrid in great style - especially in the second half where they had no chance against us. We played perfectly."

Klopp denies leaking Mourinho job info

    273371hp2.jpg

The 45-year-old trainer has refuted claims made in the German media that he suggested the Real Madrid coach is Chelsea bound in the summer Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp has reacted angrily to claims made by German newspaper Bild that he leaked information about Jose Mourinho returning to England next season.

According to the outlet, the 45-year-old coach revealed Mourinho would quit Real Madrid this summer in favor of former club Chelsea.

However, Klopp has rubbished the reports, insisting he is infuriated about what has been written and said that the Portuguese trainer is a friend of his whom he would not reveal such things about.

"It is an absolutely ridiculous story," he told reporters. "I never told anyone that Mourinho is going to Chelsea or another club. I'm not a person who does things like that.

"I heard this story before our game with Fortuna and I have to admit I was very sad and angry because it is completely false.

"It is a made up story. Mourinho is a colleague and a friend and I would never mess around in such a manner."

Klopp will come face-to-face with Mourinho on Tuesday as his Dortmund team travels to the Spanish capital for the second leg of their Champions League semifinal.

Die Schwarzgelben hold a 4-1 lead from the first leg at Signal Iduna Park, where Robert Lewandowski scored all the hosts' goals with Cristiano Ronaldo grabbing the Blancos' away goal.

    Balotelli lashes out at officials

    275855hp2.jpg

The Rossoneri striker feels that he is being victimized by referees and their assistants, claiming that he is banned for offenses that his peers get away with
AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli claimed that he is being treated differently than other players by match officials after picking up a booking for dissent in his side's 4-2 victory over Catania on Sunday.

The Italy international picked up the mandatory one-game ban after collecting a yellow card in his side's draw at Fiorentina earlier this month, but it was extended by two matches after the striker was found to have verbally abused an assistant referee during the 2-2 draw at the Artemio Franchi.

Balotelli's suspension was eventually reduced to two games, thus clearing him to face Catania at San Siro, but he found himself in hot water again with the officials after reacting angrily to what he felt was a free kick midway through the second half.

"It is not normal that I have to take so many kicks and yet they don't whistle for anything, and then when I just say one word, they ban me," the former Manchester City striker told Sky Sport Italia.

"As a result, I cannot play. I say half a word and they book me, while others can do what they want."

Milan's 4-2 win was also notable for a backlash from some Milan fans in relation to Sunday's reports in the Italian press that Rossoneri owner Silvio Berlusconi is considering sacking coach Massmiliano Allegri and replacing him with former midfielder Clarence Seedorf.

"The president can say and do what he wants," Balotelli said of the rumors. "But we hope that Allegri will stay."

Balotelli also took time out, though, to commiserate with former Inter teammate Javier Zanettii, who suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon on Sunday, thus putting his career in doubt.

"I want to wish Javier Zanetti a speedy recovery, because he's a great champion but first and foremost a great man."

Going back to the victory over Catania, Balotelli was quick to pay tribute to teammate Giampaolo Pazzini, who came off the bench with Milan a goal down and netted twice in three minutes to turn the game on its head.

"We made life complicated for ourselves in the second half," the striker mused.

"We conceded two stupid goals but we reacted like a great team and Pazzini scored two important goals, so I congratulate him for that."

Milan's victory moves it back above Fiorentina and into third place in Serie A.

Beckham shown straight red card for Paris Saint-Germain

    272902hp2.jpg

The former England captain came on with only a few minutes remaining, but was given his marching orders in stoppage time for a rash challenge, meaning PSG finished with nine men.David Beckham was sent off for Paris Saint-Germain just minutes after coming on as a late substitute in the 1-0 victory against Evian.

The former England captain was brought on for Jeremy Menez with six minutes remaining, but saw red in injury time for an over-the-ball challenge on Youssef Adnane.

Although no contact was made with the Evian forward, Beckham went in well over the ball and stamped down with his studs showing.

PSG had gone ahead thanks to Javier Pastore's goal five minutes after the break, and was already down to 10 men by the time Beckham came on due to Marco Verratti's dismissal for two bookable offenses.

Parisien goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu was also sent off following the final whistle, and he was joined by Evian's Saber Khelifa.

Carlo Ancelotti's men sit nine points clear at the top of Ligue 1 with four games remaining.
