USA 2-0 Panama: Altidore on point again as Americans cruise

    288048hp2.jpg

SEATTLE -- Jozy Altidore is on fire and the United States is riding the striker's newly found confidence as it continues to inch closer to clinching a spot in next year's World Cup.

After failing to score for the national team for nearly two years, Altidore tallied his third goal in three games to lead the U.S. to a much-needed 2-0 victory over Panama in a World Cup qualifier at CenturyLink Field on Tuesday.

The U.S., which defeated Jamaica on the road five days earlier, moves into first place in the Hexagonal standings with 10 points following a draw between Mexico and Costa Rica earlier in the night.

Eddie Johnson, who plays for the hometown Seattle Sounders, scored the USA's second goal.

Altidore opened the scoring in the 36th minute off a brilliant transition play. It started with Michael Bradley opening up the pitch before finding Fabian Johnson, who delivered a low cross to Altidore at the back post.

Coming off a 31-goal season at club AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, Altidore had finally found his scoring touch with the national team after scoring against Germany in a friendly earlier this month and against the Reggae Boyz in Kingston. He entered the latest camp on a 24-month run-of-play scoring drought.

Mexico 0-0 Costa Rica: El Tri continues to struggle offensively

It was the type of performance that left the home fans throwing objects at opposing players and chanting for the team's head coach to be fired.

Mexico once again played to a draw and failed to score in an important World Cup qualifying match as Costa Rica held El Tri to a 0-0 draw at Azteca Stadium on Tuesday night.

Mexico, the highest-ranked nation in the CONCACAF region, has played to nine draws in 10 games in 2013. The team has gone scoreless in three of its five Hexagonal matches.

With their side's offense continuing its offensive struggle, the game took an ugly turn as the home fans tossed objects at Costa Rica captain Carlos Ruiz late in the second half. They ended the match by calling for the firing of coach José Manuel de la Torre.

Mexico had entered the match in a three-way tie with Costa Rica and the United States atop the Hexagonal standings with one game in hand.

De La Torre, who is surely on thin ice, paired star striker Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez with Aldo De Nigris. He decided to leave midfielder Gio dos Santos out of the starting lineup in a desperate attempt to shake up his team.

But it was Costa Rica which would set the tone early.

The Ticos, who arrived at the stadium later than expected due to Mexico City traffic, slowly built momentum throughout the first half and did enough to hold off Mexico in the second half.

In the fourth minute, Joel Campbell had the first golden opportunity of the match when he raced past Mexico defender Maza Rodriguez and beat goalkeeper Jose Corona only to hit the far post.

Later in the half, Corona was forced to make a diving save off a Campbell attempt from inside box in the 37th minute followed by Ruiz firing a long shot right over the crossbar in the 41st.

Chicharito, who entered the match with 32 goals in 47 appearances for Mexico, looked frustrated as El Tri's attack continued to struggle during the calendar year. He received a yellow card in the first half for unnecessarily knocking down Michael Umana during a dead ball.

In an attempt to give Chicharito some help up front De La Torre replaced De Nigris in the beginning of the second half in favor of young Club America striker Raul Juminez, but not much would change in the final 45.

Costa Rica had the best opportunity to break the deadlock off a long free kick that left Corona out of position and the ball sail just wide of the post.

De la Torre didn't play Dos Santos until the 78th minute.

Mexico pushed for a final goal and nearly got it when defender Gerardo Flores redirected a free kick to the far post but Chicharito was unable to get a piece of the ball as it sailed out of bounds.

Costa Rica wasted as much time as possible as seven minutes were added after 90 minutes. The excessive injury time was due to fans tossing objects at Ruiz, one of which hit the forward in the head.

It was not the ending Mexico would have liked, especially in its final game before the Confederations Cup begins Sunday against Italy. El Tri is looking to win the competition for only the second time.

Ecuador 1-1 Argentina: Albiceleste survive Ecuador rally to earn point

    287993hp2.jpg

Argentina was forced to dig deep as it toiled in the altitude of Quito, but a determined defensive effort saw Alejandro Sabella's men hold on for a 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw away to Ecuador.

Sergio Aguero's early penalty was cancelled out by Segundo Castillo's header, and despite frantic home pressure the Albiceleste showed just enough to earn one point that keeps them on top of the CONMBEOL qualifying table and on track to qualify for Brazil 2014.

Seeking a win that, with help from Tuesday's other results, could confirm its place in the 2014 World Cup, Argentina could not have asked for a better start. Just one minute into the encounter, Angel Di Maria picked up the ball from deep, and, turning onto his left foot, released an effort towards goal. Alexander Dominguez parried straight into the path of Rodrigo Palacio and felled the advancing forward, leaving a penalty as the only option for the referee.

In the absence of Lionel Messi it was Aguero who picked up the ball, and the Manchester City star did not err as he sent Dominguez the wrong way to open the scoring.

Playing in front of a packed Estadio Atahualpa, Ecuador was not discouraged by the early setback. The Tricolor, which maintained its third-place standing with the point, immediately went on the offensive, most notably through Jefferson Montero, who delighted in tormenting Gino Peruzzi with his dribbling skills on the left flank. A run from the winger saw him cut down close to goal, and from the resulting free kick, Castillo met the cross and powered a header past Sergio Romero to restore parity.

Both sides looked for more after the equalizer in a frenetic first 45 minutes. Argentina threatened most consistently from deep, with Dominguez atoning for his earlier mistake with a handful of strong saves to keep out Di Maria and Aguero's long-range bombs. Antonio Valencia, meanwhile, went close at the far post with a header that went over the bar. Despite his and Montero's brilliance out wide, though, Ecuador could not take advantage and notch a second goal, going into the break tied.

Buoyed by that positive first-half showing, Ecuador immediately went on the front foot after the interval, stretching the Albiceleste this time down the right flank through Valencia. The Manchester United star almost played in Joao Rojas in the opening exchanges, but Sergio Romero was attentive to turn a cross-shot behind with his defense in tatters.

Felipe Caicedo had been busy throughout the game without really threatening Romero's goal, but less than 10 minutes into the half the striker was incensed at being denied a penalty. Jose Basanta was defeated in the box with a silky flick over his head, but Caicedo was already tumbling as Romero came out to cover the ball, and despite his fervent protests referee Enrique Caceres was right to continue play.

The Argentine faithful in the crowd were briefly lifted with the entrance of Lionel Messi on the hour, but with the away team playing with men behind the ball, opportunities were limited for the captain to work his magic. Ecuador continued to set the pace and went close once more from a set piece when Frickson Erazo headed over.

In spite of all the home pressure, Argentina could have stolen all three points in the last 15 minutes. Di Maria defied fatigue to embark on a storming run down the left, but with Messi waiting in the middle released a feeble cross-shot that was far from either his teammate or the net. It was a rare moment of danger for the visitors, who saw Javier Mascherano sent off in bizarre circumstances for lashing out at a pitchside official, as they finished the game holding on for a point.

The draw means the Albiceleste remain in first place, but Colombia's victory over Peru means the deficit at the top is cut to two points. Ecuador, meanwhile, stay in third, and could be caught by Chile should the Roja defeat Bolivia later in the evening.

Italy 2-2 Haiti: Les Granadiers snatch deserved draw against abject Azzurri

Haiti struck twice in the final five minutes to earn a shocking 2-2 draw with Italy in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday.

Emanuele Giaccherini put the Azzurri ahead inside the opening minute, but they failed dismally to build on their early advantage and only managed to double their lead, through Claudio Marchisio, after the introduction of several first-team regulars in the second half.

Haiti pulled a goal back when Olrish Saurel slotted home a penalty and it claimed a dramatic - but wholly deserved - equalizer with just 30 seconds of injury time remaining when Jean-Phillippe Peguero fired home.

Les Grenadiers had made a slow start in their 2-1 friendly defeat to Spain in Florida at the weekend, conceding twice inside the opening 19 minutes, but Israel Blake Cantero’s men appeared to be in even worse trouble after falling a goal down to the Azzurri with just 20 seconds gone.

Antonio Candreva was released into space down the left-hand side, and the Lazio winger hooked the ball into the middle of the area for the onrushing Giaccherini, who controlled the cross instantaneously before immediately firing past a helpless Frandy Montrevil.

The Haiti shot-stopper denied Italy a second goal just 10 minutes later when he flung himself across his goal to keep out a fine strike from distance from Candreva. The Biancocelesti ace, the star performer in an opening quarter dominated by the Azzurri, went close again moments later, after a jinking run into the area, but Haitian spirits were lifted by a sweet strike from Jeff Louis that stung the palms of Salvatore Sirigu in the Italy goal.

Cesare Prandelli’s men continued to look like scoring every time they got near the Haiti area, though, and Alberto Gilardino actually had the ball in the net on the half-hour mark, but the resurgent Bologna striker was correctly flagged for offside.

The veteran forward then struck the post in the 43rd minute, after failing to make sufficient contact with a low cross from fullback Mattia De Sciglio, before Rossoblu teammate Alessandro Diamanti hit the side-netting with a curling free kick right on halftime.

A minute after the restart, Gilardino shot straight at Montrevil, after being slipped into space on the edge of the box by Giaccherini, but it was Haiti that looked the more likely scorer immediately after the restart, with an unmarked Kevin Lafrance headed wastefully wide from a corner.

Therefore, it was no surprise that Prandelli decided during this rather nervy spell for his side to bring on some of the big guns, namely Mario Balotelli, Daniele De Rossi and Riccardo Montolivo.

Balotelli teamed up with two later arrivals, Stephan El Shaarawy and Marchisio, to make it 2-0 with 17 minutes remaining.

The volatile striker played a neat one-two with El Shaarawy before pulling the ball back for his AC Milan colleague. The 20-year-old saw his shot well saved by Montrevil, but Marchisio was on hand to tap in the rebound.

It appeared to be game over for Haiti, but the underdogs set up a frantic finale when Saurel slotted home from the spot, after Davide Astori had felled Jean-Eudes Maurice in the area.

Italy looked to have survived the Haitian onslaught, but with just seconds to go, Peguero latched onto a long ball over the top, held off Leonardo Bonucci and drove the ball past Federico Marchetti to earn a famous draw for the CONCACAF nation.

Israel U21s 1-0 England U21s: Lackluster Young Lions finish bottom of the group

England’s under-21 side will leave the Euro 2013 tournament pointless after a late Ofir Krieff strike helped host Israel claim a 1-0 victory.

After defeats to both Italy and Norway ended the hopes of the Young Lions making it to the semifinal, they will travel home, with only a Craig Dawson penalty to show for their efforts in the competition.

Israel coach Guy Luzon made four changes from the side that lost 4-0 to Italy, with Eliazer Dasa, Mohammad Kalibat and Taleb Twatha missing out, while Eyal Golasa was suspended, with Ofir Davidzada, Ofer Verta, Sintayehu Sallalich and Munas Dabbur coming in.

With England eliminated from the tournament, Stuart Pearce could make a radical revamp, with seven changes in total, which included Middlesbrough stopper Jason Steele taking over the goalkeeper jersey, while Andre Wisdom stepped into the defense and took over the captaincy.

The opening stages of the game were played more like a pre-season friendly, with the Young Lions' bags already packed to head home, while the hosts would require a minor miracle to make it through to the next stage.

Israeli keeper Boris Kleyman almost gave his side a huge scare for his side with 18 minutes gone, as he fumbled a Danny Rose corner from the left, but managed to clear before Tom Lees could turn and get a strike on goal.

A couple of minutes later the home side went up the other end of the park and Sintayehu Sallalich managed to call Steele into action as he tried his luck after cutting in from the right wing, but the English stopper palmed the ball away for a corner.

Just after the half hour mark, England should have taken the lead, when Wilfried Zaha played through Tom Ince, but Kletman stood strong to deny the midfielder and also recovered in time to save the rebound from Zaha.

England came out with an attacking intent at the start of the second half, as Wickham struck towards goal after receiving a pass from Zaha, but the striker was denied in his efforts to get the opener, as the Israeli defense blocked the attempt.

With 10 minutes gone in the second period, home skipper Nir Biton almost had a contender for goal of the tournament, as he picked the ball 25-yards out from goal and smashed it over the outstretched arms of Steele, but it cannoned off the bar.

The hosts were almost handed the opener, as Steele ran out of his box to clear a through ball, but his clearance landed at the feet of Israel Zaguri, but his attempted lob towards goal was palmed away by the keeper as he made his way back into his box.

They did finally manage to break open the England defense with 11 minutes left as Biton played in Omri Altman and he slid the ball to the right for Krieff, who curled the ball in-between two defenders and beyond Steele.

England continued to push forward for the closing stages of the game, but couldn't find a way to prevent the embarrassment of leaving the tournament with no points.

:love:Spain 2-0 Rep of Ireland: Soldado and Mata secure victory in New York friendly

    288023hp2.jpg

Spain wrapped up its preparations for the Confederations Cup with a 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland in an international friendly at the Yankee Stadium in New York City.

Goals from substitutes Roberto Soldado and Juan Mata ensured Vicente del Bosque's side the victory, but the team needed to overcome a determined Irish outfit to seal the win after a sluggish start to proceedings on the East Coast.

With the reigning world and European champion opening its Confederations Cup campaign in four days, the onus was on La Roja to perform admirably against the Irish ahead of the tournament, and the opening exchanges proved to be a distinctly slow affair.

Andres Iniesta fired a shot narrowly over the bar after a brilliant attacking phase in the early stages, but even though Del Bosque's side was typically dominating the possession count, it lacked the potency to trouble David Forde in the Ireland goal.

Nevertheless, the Boys in Green displayed plenty of fight to frustrate the more esteemed opponent - a far cry from last summer's capitulation at Euro 2012, and could've even taken the lead. Gerard Pique's indecision on the ball was punished by Sammon, who fired agonizingly wide when put one on one against Victor Valdes, in the half's best chance.

Spain, however, recovered from the poor opening as Ireland began to open up. Pique's header had earlier been cleared off the line by Paul McShane, before a neat pass from Pedro in towards David Villa was intercepted at the last moment by the Hull City defender.

Giovanni Trapattoni's men were beginning to ride their luck, and were fortunate to not fall behind. Xavi teed up Pedro, who expertly turned away from his marker before firing a thundering shot off the underside of the crossbar, before David Silva struck hopelessly over the bar from the rebound as Ireland breathed a sigh of relief.

The second half proved to be an equally dogged affair, as Ireland continued to frustrate its opponent. The flurry of substitutions just before the hour allowed the world champion to add a new dimension to its attack, and it almost paid dividends as Jesus Navas tested Forde, before Pique's shot was thwarted by the goalkeeper.

Ireland's resistance was to be broken, as the team finally folded. Darren O'Dea's poor clearance was picked up by Alvaro Arbeloa in an advanced position, before substitute Soldado struck cleanly past the impressive Forde to hand La Roja the lead. It could've been two seconds later had Jordi Alba not struck narrowly wide.

The visitors had a goal chalked off for offside, in controversial circumstances. From a corner, which was helped on into the path of Simon Cox, in an offside position, before the ball was poked home by Sean St Ledger, sending the sizable Irish contingent inside the stadium into raptures, soon dashed by the referee's interjection.

Spain rallied from that scare, and finished strongly. Santi Cazorla saw a dipping effort from distance tipped over by substitute Darren Randolph, with Sergio Ramos heading narrowly over the bar from the resulting corner. Mata wrapped up the game with a finely worked second goal, with a delightful chip over the goalkeeper on the back of a fine assist from Santi Cazorla.

Spain takes on Uruguay in their Confederations Cup Group B opener on Sunday at the Arena Pernambucano in Recife, as attention turns towards the tournament in Brazil.

Rodgers confident of Liverpool top-four finish

The Reds boss believes that with a few additions to his squad, the Merseysiders can mount a serious challenge to the teams chasing Champions League qualification.Brendan Rodgers insists Liverpool can fight off stiff competition to secure a top-four finish next season.

The 40-year-old, who guided the Reds to seventh last term, feels his side now needs no more than a couple of additions to reach its target of returning to the Champions League.

"I'm not here to be comfortable, to sit and earn the money and just enjoy being Liverpool manager," he told The Daily Mirror. "There's a pressure that comes with it and I believe we're in a much better place to challenge now. I think we can do it - I believe we have built a real good base this year.

"Of course, it will be a tough ask because, as we improve, other clubs will have masses more money to do so as well. But it's not my job to look for excuses, I have to find the solutions to try to push us in there - and I believe we won't be too far away.

"What we showed last season was promise. There were moments of disappointment and moments of delight, but when I look at the reality of it we scored 47 goals the year before and this time got 71 - and we hope to add to that amount."

Spanish forward Iago Aspas is set to complete a move to Anfield from Celta Vigo this week, but Rodgers does not intend to stop his summer spending there.

"Defensively, for a team that was supposed to be very strong a year earlier, we only conceded three more goals," he added. "So in terms of numbers and performance wise we improved. Now I believe we will improve again - and we have to because we want to sustain a challenge and aim higher every season.

"We need one/two center halves, and I'm looking to bring 20 more goals into the team - so I'm also looking at an offensive player to give us a real threat on goal and another attacking midfield player.

"We definitely need to do that, especially if we're going to put some young ones out on loan to gain experience."

Prandelli: Italy 'embarrassed' after Haiti draw

    284705_heroa.jpg

The 55-year-old admits his team's failure to overcome the lowly Grenadiers was humiliating but is hoping to rediscover "sharpness" ahead of the Confederations Cup Italy boss Cesare Prandelli says he is "embarrassed" following Tuesday's 2-2 draw with Haiti.

The Azzurri, who sit 55 places above their Caribbean counterparts in the FIFA world rankings, conceded twice in the final seven minutes after Emanuele Giaccherini and Claudio Marchisio had given Prandelli's men a two-goal lead.
And the 55-year-old admits the outcome was far from the morale-booster he would have hoped for ahead of his side's Confederations Cup opener against Mexico on June 16."It is certainly a bad result, and an embarrassing one, because a draw with Haiti is an embarrassment," he told Rai Sport. "We arrived yesterday and made many changes. We should’ve been different in terms of spirit today.

"We have to take many aspects into consideration, most importantly we need to find our physical sharpness."We’ve worked towards this and you could see today we lost every single sprint, so we hope in five days the team can begin to deliver."
