:love:Swansea City 1-4 Manchester United: Van Persie & Welbeck doubles give champions perfect start

    306628hp2.jpg

Manchester United began the defence of their Premier League under new manager David Moyes with a comfortable 4-1 against Swansea.

Two eye-catching goals from Robin van Persie, either side of an effort from Danny Welbeck, gave the Red Devils a commanding three-goal lead at the Liberty Stadium.

    article-2396136-1B57BB23000005DC-343_634x409.jpg

Micheal Laudrup's men pulled a goal back through league debutant Wilfried Bony but Welbeck rounded off the win for the visitors with a well-taken second goal scooped over Michel Vorm.

Following his performance for England against Scotland on Wednesday, Moyes named Wayne Rooney on the bench, as speculation over his future at Old Trafford continues.

The United boss instead preferred to use Van Persie as a lone striker, with Ryan Giggs and Welbeck providing support.Swansea boss Michael Laudrup gave a debut to Jose Canas, although Bony had to settle for a place on the bench.

The better of the early chances fell to the visitors - Phil Jones seeing an early volley tipped over the crossbar by Vorm while Giggs wasted two good opportunities with a rare lack of composure. But United’s early dominance was turned into goals just after the half hour with two in as many minutes.

First, Van Persie broke the deadlock with a piece of excellent opportunism. The Dutchman controlled a ball from Giggs on his chest, swivelled and emphatically volleyed the ball past Vorm.

And a few moments later, Welbeck doubled their lead, the striker tapping home from a Valencia cross after the Swansea defence had failed to clear Patrice Evra’s dangerous cross. With his side chasing the game, Laudrup introduced Ivory Coast striker Bony and Pablo Hernandez at the start of the second half, and slowly Swansea worked their way back into the game.

Their clearest sight of goal came just before the hour when a loose ball fell to Canas on the edge of the penalty area, but his long-range effort sailed harmlessly over the crossbar.

United, having introduced Rooney, extended their lead with 18 minutes to play as Van Persie grabbed his second of the match. The Swansea defence backed off as he bore down on goal, before the Dutchman jinked away from a Chico Flores tackle and fired the ball beyond Vorm's outstretched dive into the top corner.

Bony capped his Premier League debut with a goal, the Ivorian stroking the ball home first time from inside the penalty area after excellent work from Hernandez, but his strike with eight minutes to play ultimately mattered little.

Welbeck added his second in the final minute of injury time, the striker calmly lifting the ball over Vorm from a tight angle despite close attention from Chico, to seal the win for United.

Valencia close in on €7m Pabon

    288197_heroa.jpg

Valencia are closing in on the signing of Monterrey striker Dorlan Pabon after agreeing to meet the player's €7 million release clause.

Los Che are in the market for a centre-forward following Roberto Soldado's €30m move to Tottenham this summer, despite having signed Portugal international Helder Postiga earlier this month.

Miroslav Djukic's side have now moved swiftly to secure the services of Pavon for the relatively-nominal sum, in order to avoid the Colombia international's buyout clause rising to €21m next week.

"Earlier today, Valencia's legal representative arrived to tell us the club would meet the clause of Dorlan Pabon, with consent from the player and his agent," Monterrey confirmed on their official website.

Pabon only arrived at the Mexican side in January 2013, but was immediately sent on loan to Real Betis, where he netted eight goals in 17 Liga appearances.

Valenica begun their La Liga campaign with a 1-0 win over Malaga on Saturday.

Klose eager to end Juventus curse

    293873_heroa.jpg

Lazio striker Miroslav Klose is eager to end his curse in front of goal against Juventus when the two sides clash in the Supercoppa on Sunday.

The veteran marksman has failed to net past Gianluigi Buffon since arriving in Serie A in 2011 but is relishing the chance to break his duck against the Italian champions - and seal the first trophy of the season in the process.

"I am sure that sooner or later I will score a goal against Juve. Hopefully it will happen tomorrow," the 35-year-old told reporters.

"I am not the only person who can score goals. Our midfield has players like [Antonio] Candreva and [Senad] Lulic.

"This is our first official game of the season and we want to prove we’re ready. I am sure we can win, especially in our home stadium, though as always we’d need a bit of luck."

Head coach Vladimir Petkovic conceded his side will be up against it on Sunday, but believes a strong mental approach to the game could see the Biancoceleste triumph.

"Juve are stronger then they were because they haven't sold anyone and brought in new players this summer," the 49-year-old acknowledged.

"Our heads must be in top condition, as they were in the Coppa Italia [final]. Our mentality will be key against them. We'll do everything we can to win.

"We can make life difficult for them. We do have something more [than last season]. I'm curious to see how we perform tomorrow.

"We are a solid team and must be clinical in attack, because Juve won't allow us many chances."

    'Martino won't fail Barcelona'

    301974_heroa.jpg

Gerardo Martino will have no difficulty in continuing to bring success to Barcelona, according to former Malaga director Mario Husillos.

Husillos - who left La Rosaleda in June - had initially identified Martino as the ideal successor for Manchester City-bound Manuel Pellegrini prior to his move to Camp Nou, and believes the Argentine is without a doubt the correct choice to replace Tito Vilanova.

"I would be lying to you if I said I was surprised by his move to Barcelona. When it became clear that Vilanova could not continue it was his name that came to mind," Husillos told Marca.

"I thought he would be one of the clear candidates to replace Vilanova. I saw a lot of what he did at Newell's and I know where that club came from when he took over.

"He will continue the work already done, he won't fail his players. He can bring normality which is something that is not given enough press within the game.

"He is truly humble and people will respect him for that."

Doubts remain over whether Martino will be able to adapt swiftly to the European game having never coached outside South America in the past, but Husillos has dismissed any such anxieties.

"I have no doubts at all, he is very well prepared and you have to remember that he made things very difficult for Spain in the World Cup," he continued.

"Martino's sides respect the ball and play football and that is what made the difference in Argentina. His side played the best football and there was a marked difference with the rest of the sides.

"He is a winner with a specific way of playing and I think he has the ability to do well. He likes a passing style of football with emphasis on touch."

Barcelona begin the defence of their La Liga crown against Levante on Sunday.

Bayern struggled for fitness, admits Robben

    303818_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben admits his side struggled for top form during their 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

Mario Mandzukic put the Bavarians in charge early on, but Pep Guardiola's men failed to build on their lead as they laboured in front of the opposition goal, and Robben believes the victory was crucial given the exploits of a number of players during the international break.

"The games when players come back from international duty are always difficult," the 29-year-old told AZ.

"One's travelling from South America, one from Asia, but they can only train on Thursday, then just a bit on Friday.

"The players had a little break, but the ones you notice are the ones who aren't at 100 per cent. But you have to go on, and wanting to win a game is a mental thing.

"At the start, the most important thing is to win games. A 1-0 is always tight. We had enough opportunities to make it 2-0. If you don't, then it stays tight until the end."

Toni Kroos was also thrilled at the result, but acknowledges his side could well have been made to pay for their profligacy.

"We all know it’s never easy in Frankfurt, because they’re a very good team," he told the club's official website.

"However, we still dominated the game for the full 90 minutes. We let them have very few chances, but we have to point the finger at ourselves for not wrapping it up much earlier.

"It would have been a lot calmer at the end."

Welbeck deserves the headlines, says Moyes

    306699_heroa.jpg

David Moyes believes Danny Welbeck "deserves the headlines" after scoring twice in Manchester United's 4-1 victory over Swansea City.

The 22-year-old's double, along with two goals from Robin van Persie, secured three points for United in David Moyes' first Premier League game in charge since taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson.

"I think Danny Welbeck might deserve those headlines. He scored one goal last year and now he's got two right away, it'll do his confidence a lot of good. He got in a great position for the first one," Moyes told talkSPORT.

"The goal for England in midweek, unfortunately against Scotland, did help him. Overall his second goal was a brilliant finish."

Moyes has played down the impact of an opening-day victory against Michael Laudrup's side, insisting his inherited players have maintained their winning mentality.

"It was another day at the office and I just had to get on and do the job and try make sure we got a result. It's one game gone. If we had lost today there might have been people talking," Moyes continued.

"I'm not shouting about the position we're in. The players are not singing and dancing in the changing rooms because they win here and that's what they have done today."

    Mazzarri urges Coppa Italia focus

    300099_heroa.jpg

Inter coach Walter Mazzarri has urged his side to be fully focused ahead of their Coppa Italia clash with Cittadella on Sunday.

The San Siro giants have been forced to contend in the third qualifying round of the tournament after stumbling to a ninth-place finish in Serie A last season, and although the Nerazzurri remain firm favourites for the encounter, Mazzarri is determined not to underestimate their opponents.

"Yes, that's absolutely true [the match is tricky] because it comes before the league has even kicked off and we haven't played a single meaningful match yet," warned the Italian to Inter Channel.

"Regardless of who you're up against, you always risk subconsciously underestimating your opponents. There are plenty of pitfalls in August fixtures.

"We must be aware of that when we go out there and take control of the game, showing that we're focused and paying attention to every little detail needed to win it."

Inter are further hampered by the fitness of players who were involved with their national sides during the past week, but Mazzarri insists tiredness will not be an excuse heading into the clash.

"Some of the lads are a bit more tired than others, those who played a lot with their national teams," added the 51-year-old.

"[Rodrigo] Palacio, for example, was tired and he didn't even take part in the training match today. We can't use that as an excuse though.

"The lads need to recover and get some rest overnight to put in a good performance tomorrow so that we have a chance of going through."

Wenger defends Arsenal transfer policy after Aston Villa defeat

Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal's lack of signings in the transfer market were not to blame for Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

Arsenal have already failed in moves for Gonzalo Higuain, who moved to Napoli in July, and Luiz Gustavo, who secured a switch from Bayern Munich to Wolfsburg earlier this week. The club also look set to lose out on Luis Suarez as Liverpool continue to reiterate their no-sale stance when asked about the striker.

So far, Wenger has managed to sign 20-year-old forward Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer from Auxerre, but the Arsenal boss is adamant that his side's season-opening defeat to Villa cannot be blamed on the failure to bolster his squad over the summer.

"Could we have won the game with the players who were on the pitch today? That for me is the real question and I say yes," Wenger told the club's official website.

"If we do not spend money it's because we don't find the players. I'm not the only one to work on that, we are a team who works on that and we are ready to buy the players if we find that the players are good enough for us.

"We want our fans to be happy and when you don't achieve that you feel absolutely sorry and really disappointed. My job is to make the fans happy but we haven't lost the game because of [not signing players].

"We are on the market, everybody knows that we want to buy players but until we buy players we have to win football games. It's not an excuse not to have bought players to lose the game today.

"People always say 'buy players, buy players, buy players' when you tell them 'tell me who' it becomes much more problematic. We take our work seriously and believe me we analyse every single player in the world.

"We work 24 hours a day for that and when you make a decision we take it seriously. We are not what people try to think we do not want to spend, we want, we are ready to buy players."

The Frenchman also lamented his growing injury list, with Bacary Sagna, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Kieran Gibbs all picking up knocks during the game.

Arsenal now face a trip to Turkey on Wednesday where they will face Fenerbahce in the first leg of their Champions League play-off tie.

"Not only do we lose a game we have many injuries. It's unbelievable how many people are on the treatment table and we have to recover some players for Wednesday night," he added.

Martino: We will not put pressure on Neymar

Barcelona boss Gerardo Martino has warned against putting too much pressure on €57 million signing Neymar at the start of the season.

Neymar's partnership with resident talisman Lionel Messi has hogged the headlines since the Brazilian's arrival from Santos, but Martino has stressed the need to be "logical" when deploying the 21-year-old in the Barca line-up.

"It's difficult to imagine someone as good as Neymar not being able to bring something to Barcelona," the 50-year-old said to reporters.

"He has connected well with Messi and the others, he looks comfortable. The only thing we need to do is be logical about when we put him in the team.

"We want to put him into the team little by little, without pressuring him. We're going to be careful about Neymar, but he's a great player and will give a lot to the team."

Martino has also urged Alexis Sanchez to rediscover the impressive form he displayed for his national team under Marcelo Bielsa after the Chilean impressed during pre-season

"I want to see the Alexis that played under Bielsa with Chile. I have a lot of expectations for him," Martino continued.

"He's an important player who changes games, we have to give him confidence about scoring goals. He'll be an important player for us."

The Catalans are tipped to defend their Primera Division crown against the challenge of rivals Real Madrid, but Martino is wary of challenges from other sides in Spain's top flight.

"I think we need to be more respectful to other teams, like Atletico Madrid," he warned.

"My main concern now is that we play well tomorrow and win [against Levante]. It's important for our confidence and to send a message to the rest of the league.

"It's vital we win and play in the same way that Barcelona have done recently."

Goal-line technology makes Premier League debut

    306560_heroa.jpg

The Premier League's new goal-line technology was called upon during Aston Villa’s 3-1 opening day win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The visitors had already cancelled out Olivier Giroud’s opening goal through Christian Benteke when Fabian Delph almost netted their second in the 52nd minute. The midfielder beat goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny but saw his long-range effort strike the inside of the right-hand post and roll across the line.

And the Hawk-Eye Goal Decision System - which was used for the first time in English football during the Community Shield last Sunday - came into play.Television replays shown in the press box confirmed that referee Anthony Taylor had been notified that the ball did not cross the line at any point.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore believes the GDS system will improve the Premier League this season, after revealing there were 31 occasions that could have benefited from it last term.

"The most important thing in football is a goal - was it scored or wasn't it," he said.
"That is what the whole object of the game is and therefore it's important because we've now got the technology and got the resources that work, that we've been able to introduce it."I'm absolutely confident of its accuracy, 100 per cent. It's quick, which again is very important. That decision needs to be an instant decision. It will be less than a second."

The Premier League is the first football division in the world to introduce the system but Franz Beckenbauer has called for the German Football League (DFL) to follow after Hoffenheim were controversially denied a goal during their 2-2 draw with Nurnberg in the Bundesliga last Saturday.
