Sunderland 3-1 Tottenham: Black Cats run riot as Bale misses out

    298889hp2.jpg

Sunderland progressed to the final of the Barclays Asia Trophy, where they will face either Manchester City or South China, after coming from behind to beat Tottenham 3-1 in a scrappy affair in Hong Kong.

Spurs took the lead through Gylfi Sigurdsson, whose close-range effort deflected off John O'Shea and arced into the goal, but conceded minutes later when Wearside new-boy Cabral was sent through on goal and calmly stroked the ball home.

Centre-back Wes Brown netted from a corner after the Black Cats' profligate frontline had wasted a number of chances, before substitute David Moberg Karlsson rounded off the win on the stroke of full-time.

Gareth Bale was absent for Tottenham after picking up a knock in training, while Paolo Di Canio named four new signings in his starting XI, including Jozy Altidore and Emanuele Giaccherini.

Kick-off at the Hong Kong Stadium was delayed by half an hour due to poor weather, with parts of the pitch heavily waterlogged, and the halves were reduced to 40 minutes.

Sunderland adapted to the conditions much quicker than their opponents, with Spurs' attempts at playing crisp, one-touch football hampered by the heavy, cut-up turf.

Stephane Sessegnon was able to break clear when Steven Caulker misjudged a long ball, but the Benin international's goal-bound shot was thwarted by Michael Dawson. The Spurs skipper was forced to make another flying block to deny Cabral's long-range attempt soon after.

Tottenham were controlling possession, though, and managed to make that count in the 28th minute. Kyle Walker burst down the flank, shrugging off Giaccherini, before sending a low cross into the box which was fired into the back of the net by Sigurdsson.

Soon after, a woeful first touch from Tom Huddlestone gifted possession to Sunderland deep in Spurs' half, allowing Cabral to race through on goal and coolly slot the ball beyond the reach of Heurelho Gomes and into the bottom corner.

Sunderland, unchanged in the second half, should have taken the lead moments after the restart, but Altidore scuffed a volley from inside the six-yard box.

There was bad news for Tottenham as second-half substitute Jan Vertonghen was stretchered off the pitch with a serious injury. Rising to contest a header with Sessegnon, the Belgian's ankle buckled beneath him on landing.

Altidore fired narrowly wide after play resumed, wriggling between a sea of white shirts, before swift counterattacking interplay between Jermain Defoe and Clint Dempsey released Emmanuel Adebayor, whose curling, scooped effort was palmed away by Vito Mannone.

The ex-Arsenal shot-stopper was almost immediately forced into action again, pawing away a powerful Defoe effort after Danny Rose, on loan at the Stadium of Light last year, had whipped in a dangerous cross.

Those misses would prove costly, as Brown escaped Zeki Fryers to head in Moberg Karlsson's pin-point cross at the back post, with substitute Brad Friedel left helpless.

As Tottenham pressed forward for an equaliser, they were almost stung on the break. Sessegnon raced clear of Dawson and squared the ball for Altidore, but the American was thwarted by countryman Friedel.

The veteran keeper then pushed away a stinging drive from El-Hadji Ba, before clawing out a header from Connor Wickham that looked as though it was flying into the top corner, but could do nothing to deny Moberg Karlsson after the Swede broke the offside trap and tucked the ball into the bottom corner.

Melbourne 0-2 Liverpool: Arsenal target Suarez sets up new boy Aspas

    298882hp2.jpg

Luis Suarez emerged from the bench to create Liverpool's second goal as the Reds secured a 2-0 victory over Melbourne Victory in the second game of their three-match tour of Southeast Asia and Oceania.

Steven Gerrard converted from inside the box on the half-hour mark to give Brendan Rodgers' side a first-half lead before Suarez emerged to a standing ovation and laid on a tap-in for Iago Aspas.

The Uruguayan dazzled the Australian crowd with some trademark touches and spins during his short cameo but cannot be described as displaying the body language of a man excited to be involved in the Merseyside club's build-up to the new season.

Citing tiredness, Rodgers left Suarez on the bench following a new bid from Arsenal for the Uruguay striker, so Fabio Borini led the line between Raheem Sterling and Jordon Ibe.

With Pepe Reina reportedly set to join Napoli, Brad Jones started in goal in his home country and Reina's likely replacement, Simon Mignolet, joined Suarez among the substitutes.

The distance between the pitch and the crowd at the 95,000-capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground did not prevent the considerable number of Reds fans present from performing a rousing rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone before kick-off, but Rodgers' players were somewhat slower off the mark.

Liverpool quickly took hold of possession against the under-strength hosts but Melbourne defended well and began to construct some promising attacks of their own.

Sterling missed the target with two speculative efforts either side of confident work from Victory left winger Connor Pain, who narrowly missed an unmarked team-mate with a cut-back into the box.

Jones and his opposite number Nathan Coe were tested for the first time around the 20-minute mark by Andrew Nabbout and Gerrard, whose respective 20-yard efforts were saved comfortably.

The Liverpool captain made no mistake with his next chance. After tenacious work from Borini, Allen was allowed to run at the home defence and looked to pick out the Italian on the edge of the box.

Instead, his curved pass drifted through to Gerrard, who had continued his run from deep after a clever dummy earlier in the move. He swept a first-time shot from 12 yards into the bottom corner.

The second half was a more subdued affair. Coe tipped Martin Skrtel's near-post header from a Gerrard corner over the bar before the centre-back was called into action in his own box, sliding to clear Pain's low cross with Nabbout lurking.

His team-mates appeared to be tiring but Pain remained lively, forcing Jones to awkwardly parry one vicious left-footed drive, while Borini was enjoying his most productive spell of the game and saw an overhead kick loop just wide of the post.

Suarez was finally introduced with less than 20 minutes to go and, apparently unaffected by a summer of speculation and controversial interviews, was awarded a standing ovation by the Liverpool supporters.

He and nine other substitutes - the 11th, Lucas Leiva, had replaced Gerrard slightly earlier - saw out the final stages and Aspas added a second after Suarez had snaked into the box from a short corner.

Olympique Lyonnais 2-2 Real Madrid: Los Blancos leave it late to spare Ancelotti's blushes

    299052hp2.jpg

Real Madrid scored twice in the closing 12 minutes to claim a 2-2 draw from an entertaining friendly against Olympique Lyonnais at the Stade de Gerland on Wednesday night.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti looked set to suffer his first defeat in just his second game at the helm of los Blancos, with Clement Grenier and Lisandro having put the hosts in complete command of the contest.

However, Alvaro Morata slotted home a penalty before Casemiro headed home an equaliser with just six minutes left to rescue the game for Madrid.

Given that they are much further along in their pre-season preparations, it was hardly surprising that Lyon made the brighter start at the Gerland, with Grenier forcing Diego Lopez into action after just over 60 seconds of play with a smart volley from the edge of the area.

Madrid, by contrast, started sluggishly and though Cristiano Ronaldo briefly flickered into life 15 minutes in, the visitors found themselves behind just before the midway point of the first half.

There appeared to be little danger to the Blancos goal when Alexandre Lacazette whipped in a low cross from the right wing, but it reached Grenier, who, while moving away from goal, managed to beat Lopez with the most wonderfully nonchalant volley.

Madrid almost posted an instant reply, but the alert Anthony Lopes cleared the danger, after Angel Di Maria looked poised to pounce on an under-hit backpass.

The Argentina winger threatened again with a dipping, long-range effort just before the half-hour mark but, as it was, Carlo Ancelotti’s men went in a goal down at the end of a reasonably competitive opening half.

The second half opened in a similarly entertaining fashion, with both Lacazette and Di Maria continuing to look threatening. It was the former, though, who again made a decisive contribution, the Lyon No.10 heading a Gael Danic cross down into the path of Lisandro, who swept the ball past Lopez.

The virtually anonymous Ronaldo was hauled off soon after, so it was left to Morata to drag Madrid back into the game when Fares Bahlouli felled Denis Cheryshev in the area.

Los Blancos drove forward in the closing 10 minutes and were rewarded for their resilience when Casemiro rose highest to head home a corner from Di Maria and spare former Paris Saint-Germain boss Ancelotti a painful return to France.

Bayern Munich 2-0 Barcelona: Lahm and Mandzukic gift Pep easy win over former employers

    Bayern-v-Barca-001.jpg

Bayern Munich continued their preparations for the new season with a 2-0 friendly victory over Barcelona at the Allianz Arena.

Philipp Lahm grabbed the opener midway through the first half and Mario Mandzukic completed the scoring seconds before full-time.

The match started at a decent pace, with Lionel Messi gaining possession in midfield within 30 seconds, sprinting to the Bayern box and bending a shot wide.

Unsurprisngly, though, given the strength of their starting XI, the hosts soon took control and Toni Kroos had a powerful effort beaten away by Jose Pinto from the edge of the box.

Then, Franck Ribery began to exert his influence on the match. First, the Frenchman went on a brilliant run down the left, leaving his marker in his wake, and bent a great ball across the face of goal to Arjen Robben, who would have opened the scoring were it not for a brilliant bit of defending from Adriano.

Minutes later, the former Marseille winger had tapped the ball into the path of the overlapping David Alaba, who became the next player to test Pinto with a stinging drive.

Then, the inevitable goal finally arrived. Ribery clipped an inviting cross over the top of the Barca defence and Lahm leapt up to send a looping header over Pinto.

Barca's response was initially muted. Martin Montoya played a great ball from the right wing to the looming Sergi Roberto, who prodded wide when he should have equalised.

But Bayern were still doing all the running and were within inches from extending their lead, first when Muller clipped the bar with a long-range shot, then when the Germany international almost teed up Robben after a give-and-go with Alaba.

Cristian Tello had an effort late in the first half which failed to truly trouble the Bavarians as the opening period fizzled out.

With Barca having made a string of half-time changes, the stage was set for Bayern to go on and add to their tally.

And they continued their assault on the Barca goal after half-time. Ribery twisted and turned in the Catalans' box before unleashing a low drive which Oier saved, while Mandzukic contrived to let the rookie keeper save an effort from the midway inside the area when he should have buried it.

The second goal finally came minutes from the end. Diego Contento beat the offside trap on the left-hand side of midfield and squared it to Mandzukic, who could not miss from a matter of yards.

    Pellegrini boasts 'strong' strike-force

    manuelpellegrinimcfc_576x324.jpg

Manchester City Manuel Pellegrini believes his strike force is one of the most potent attacking line-ups in the Premier League.
City have not been idle in the summer months, spending spent close to £100m in signing Fernandinho from Shakhtar Donetsk, Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo from Sevilla and Montenegro striker Stevan Jovetic.Yet it is his new front men which Pellegrini believes have been attracting the most envious glances from rival managers.

“Yes, I think so, it’s very strong,” the Chilean manager told The Sun. “ I know Negredo very well from the Spanish league, so it was not a surprise for me the way he played.“I think we have very good strikers with [Edin] Dzeko as well. They can play together or we can play one of them with Jovetic or [Sergio] Aguero.

“We have four very good strikers and that’s what you need if you play in the Premier League and Champions League as a competitive team.”However, Pellegrini, who watched his team beat South China FC in the Barclays Asia Premier League trophy in Hong Kong, said he was not just focusing on the club’s attacking force, but was preparing the whole squad for the upcoming campaign.

“We are not just preparing a team, it’s important to prepare the whole squad and then we will see who plays,” he said.“We must be ready from the start of the first match against Newcastle and the team must play as we want.

“I’m sure we will arrive at the first match the way I want. “I think that a big club like Manchester City always has a lot of pressure.“It’s very important to play under pressure. The players play better under pressure so we’re not scared by that.”

Pellegrini also said stars David Silva, Aguero and new boy Jovetic could be in line to face Sunderland in the Barclays Asia Premier League trophy final.
