AC Milan 3-0 PSV (4-1 on aggregate): Boateng & Balotelli ensure group stage place

    310616hp2.jpg

AC Milan are through to the group stages of the Champions League following a 3-0 victory over PSV at San Siro on Wednesday.

The two sides had approached the clash with the tie finely poised at 1-1 after a tight encounter in Netherlands a week ago.

However, two Kevin-Prince Boateng strikes either side of a Mario Balotelli effort ensured that the Rossoneri reached the competition once more.

The result also eased the pressure on Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri, whose job was reportedly under threat should the Italians have failed to ensure they would make the lucrative step beyond the play-offs.

The start of the game provided plenty of evidence that fans would be treated to an attacking encounter in Italy. Tim Matavz was the recipient of the first clear chance, with his header being brilliantly kept out by Christian Abbiati, but it would be Milan who took an all important lead in the tie moments later.

The goal was all Boateng's work, with the midfielder picking the ball up 25 yards from goal before shifting onto his right and firing beyond the despairing dive of Jeroen Zoet to put his side ahead.

Clearly buoyed by the goal, the hosts began to dominate the match. A short backpass from Joshua Brenet almost allowed Stephan El Shaarawy to make the most of his side's ascendency soon after, before the 19-year-old full-back also presented Balotelli with an opportunity after dithering on the ball.

El Shaarawy then came mightily close to scoring as his volley smashed off the bar before hitting the line, with replays proving inconclusive as to whether the ball went in.However, that near miss appeared to spark the visitors into life, and they came within inches of equalising in the dying moments of the first half when Jetro Willens' cross-cum-shot struck the crossbar with Abbiati stranded.

The Italian goalkeeper might have been lucky not to concede just before the break but there was no doubting the part he played in preventing a PSV equaliser in the very first minute of the second half. A cross from the left evaded a mass of bodies in the Milan box before landing at the feet of the unmarked Georginio Wijnaldum but, with the Dutchman looking certain to score, Abbiati somehow produced a stunning close-range block of a vicious half-volley.

And the merits of that stop were clear in the 54th minute, as Balotelli put the tie beyond all doubt by showing quick reflexes to volley home left-footed after Philippe Mexes flicked on a dangerous El Shaarawy free-kick.

The hosts enjoyed control of the match from that moment on, even with the possibility of a momentum-shifting PSV goal looming. But the necessary gloss was added to the scoreline with just 13 minutes of normal time remaining as Boateng managed to squeeze a left-footed shot under Zoet's hand from a tight angle to finally kill the visitors' hopes of progression.

Meanwhile, Zenit St Petersburg enjoyed an even more comfortable passage into the next round as a two goals from Danny allied to goals from Aleksandr Bukharov and Andrey Arshavin completed a 4-2 win and an 8-3 overall victory against Pacos de Ferreira.

And in Slovenia, a third-minute goal from Stanislav Tecl helped Viktoria Plzen beat Maribor 1-0 and 4-1 on aggregate.

Real Sociedad 2-0 Olympique Lyonnais (4-0 on aggregate): Vela double seals progression

    310173hp2.jpg

Real Sociedad confirmed their place in the Champions League group stages with a 2-0 victory at home to Olympique Lyonnais.

The Basque outfit had claimed a 2-0 win in the first leg of the tie and two second-half goals from Carlos Vela dumped the French giants into the Europa League.

Lyon began the game brightly and dominated possession in search of an early goal to get themselves back in the tie. However, they failed to test Claudio Bravo in the Sociedad goal and it was the home side who carved out the first clear-cut chance of the game.

Antoine Griezmann, who lit up the first leg with a sublime scissor-kick, raced through in the eighth minute, but fluffed his lines as his weak attempted chip was easily gathered by Anthony Lopes. That opening gave Arrasate’s men some impetus though and Griezmann began pulling the strings.

Vela could only fire wide after the Frenchman cut a corner back to him just before the half-hour mark, before Griezmann himself had another effort saved by Lopes.
The former Arsenal man was then involved in the major talking point of the first half as he went down in the area under a challenge from Kone, only for referee Damir Skomina to book him for simulation. And the 24-year-old could have made amends by opening the scoring a minute later but Lopes palmed his lofted shot wide.

Sociedad picked up where they left off after the break and Haris Seferovic almost grabbed his second goal of the tie on 49 minutes when he collected Vela’s pass, cut inside from the right and rifled a left-footed effort off the inside of the near post with Lopes beaten. And Seferovic missed a gilt-edged opportunity to wrap up the home side’s victory shortly after as a swift counter-attack ended with Griezmann laying the ball across to him, but the Switzerland international could only side foot wide.

However, Sociedad did not have to wait long for the breathing space they were after as Vela put them three goals to the good on aggregate after 66 minutes.Griezmann was again the creator as the former Arsenal forward met his inswinging corner with an unmarked header from inside the six-yard box.

And Vela saved his best for last, as he grabbed his second of the night with a brilliant solo effort in injury time that involved him beating two defenders before coolly lifting the ball over Lopes.

Barcelona 0-0 Atletico Madrid (Agg 1-1, Barcelona win on away goals): Messi misses penalty as Simeone's men see red in Supercopa defeat

    310692hp2.jpg

Barcelona have claimed the Supercopa de Espana with thanks to an away goals victory over Atletico Madrid following a 0-0 draw at Camp Nou.

The Blaugrana enjoyed the lion's share of possession at Camp Nou and Lionel Messi missed a penalty late on, but in the end Neymar's draw-rescuing away goal a week ago proved to be the difference.

The game was void of clear-cut chances for much of the opening 45 minutes, with the best opportunity of the half falling Atletico's way in the shadows of half-time.

Atletico left-back Filipe Luis burst down the wing and squared a ball for Turkish attacker Arda Turan, who turned Gerard Pique inside out, galloped into the box and lashed a blistering shot - only kept out by a brilliant reflex save from Barca custodian Victor Valdes. There was much more action in the second period as both teams upped the ante to find a winner.

But as the second half went on, tensions flared - and Atletico bore the brunt with two red cards, one to Filipe for lashing out with an elbow at Dani Alves off the ball.Turan then saw red, but only after he had already been substituted 20 minutes earlier.

Messi had the chance to end the game from the spot, but he fired his penalty into the crossbar, after Pedro was crashed into inside the area to earn the spot-kick.
With that, the draw was ensured, and Tata Martino claimed his first silverware in charge of Barcelona just one month into the Camp Nou job.

Atletico can't compete with Barca - Simeone

    308175_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone says his side cannot compete with Barcelona and Real Madrid after losing the Supercopa de Espana to the Blaugrana.

Gerardo Martino's men claimed the first silverware of the season on away goals, with Neymar's first-leg strike to record a 1-1 draw proving the difference after a 0-0 stalemate at Camp Nou.

And Simeone believes that his side can only match Spain's top teams over 90 minutes, not over a 38-game season.

"Barca are better than us, Real Madrid are better than us," he told reporters after the game.

"Their economic strength puts them out of our reach. In a one-off match we can try and match them, but not over a league season."

Atleti had two players see red over the course of the match, with four others picking up bookings, but Simeone went on to defend his side's approach.

"It’s normal for there to be contact in football," he added.

Balotelli: Comparing me to Ibra is a compliment to him!

    310664_heroa.jpg

AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli has claimed that comparisons between him and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are complimentary to the Paris Saint-Germain star.

The Italy international has made a stunning impact since arriving at San Siro in January, helping to fill the void left by the Swede's departure to the French capital.

The former Inter man believes that he and the 31-year-old are very different players but joked that he was superior.

"We are two different people, but comparing me to Zlatan is a compliment to him," he told Sky Italia after his side's 3-0 win over PSV.

Victory against the Dutch giants sealed progression to the Champions League group stages and Balotelli has set his sights on winning the tournament.

"In Netherlands we didn't play well, but we killed them here in Milan. We had a bad game in Eindhoven. It happens. It is better if that happens in the first leg than the second."

Milan will be looking to kickstart their Serie A campaign with a trip to Cagliari on Sunday, having lost their first fixture to Hellas Verona.

Liverpool have plenty of time to recover, says Mignolet

    306526_heroa.jpg

Simon Mignolet insists Liverpool have enough time to recover ahead of their Premier League clash with Manchester United on Sunday, despite having played 120 minutes on Tuesday night.

The Reds were involved in a unexpectedly hard-fought contest against Notts County in the Capital One Cup, eventually prevailing 4-2 after extra-time.

And the Belgian goalkeeper does not believe the Anfield outfit will suffer a hangover following the gruelling tie, and says a tough pre-season campaign means they are prepared to play three games in a week.

"We are professionals and we worked really hard in pre-season to get fit for the start of the season so that won't be an issue," the goalkeeper told the Liverpool Echo.

"Everybody will rest up and we have a number of days before Sunday. There is enough time to recover.

"It will be a huge experience for me against United and I always look forward to these types of games. It's going to be a big one and we will try to win the game. We will make sure we're ready for Sunday.

"We have to look at ourselves rather than focus on who we're playing against."

Mignolet is happy to have progressed to the next round of the Capital One Cup, though admitted Liverpool were culpable of switching off and allowing Notts County back into the game.

"We're just relieved to have won the tie," Mignolet continued. "We wanted to get through to the next round and in the end we did that.

"Obviously when you lead 2-0 at half-time you hope that things are going to go a lot more easily for you and that's what happened tonight. That was disappointing and so were the injuries we suffered. "We made it difficult for ourselves in the second half. I wouldn't say it was complacency but even if you lead 2-0, no matter who the opponent is, the game is not over.

"We tried to score a third goal but that didn't work out and then they got a goal from a set-piece which changed the game."We have to learn lessons but we're into the next round and that's the most important thing. We want to do well in this competition and maybe further down the road we will look back and take the positives from this game.

"We still have a chance to win the cup. At one stage tonight it didn't look like that would be the case."

Tottenham in talks with Ajax over Eriksen transfer - Overmars

    286316_heroa.jpg

Ajax technical director Marc Overmars has revealed that Tottenham have opened talks with the Eredivisie club over the signing of Christian Eriksen.

The Danish international's contract expires next summer and he is believed to be available for approximately €15 million, leaving Overmars to confirm that the north Londoners are speaking to the midfielder.

Speaking to Telegraaf TV, Overmars said: "[Tottenham chairman Daniel] Levy was here today to discuss the transfer. There is no agreement yet until it’s signed.

"Eriksen is going to talk with Tottenham now.

"Obviously, if it happens, we won’t be happy at all to lose Eriksen. Especially since we, the trainers and staff, feel that he was improving and was becoming more influential in games this season.

"We would’ve liked to see him stay at Ajax for another season."

Overmars also agreed that the upcoming expiry of the Dane's contract was a consideration, adding: "The length of the contract is very important and previously made agreements also play a role."

Willian: Chelsea was always my first choice

    310448_heroa.jpg

Chelsea new-boy Willian says it has always been a "dream" to play for the west London side, and expressed excitement at working with Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge.

The Brazilian completed his €37 million move from Russian side Anzhi on Wednesday upon securing a work permit, having joined his new club after completing a medical at London rivals Tottenham.

"I've always been following Chelsea and every time I came to London I would try to see a Chelsea game and see how the team was doing because it's been my dream to come to play here," he told the club's official website.

"Finally it's become a reality, and when the offer came I never gave a thought to anybody else, I said to myself that I would run here, and I'm happy to be here now. Chelsea was always my first choice.

"It's going to be an immense pleasure to work with Jose Mourinho, listen to him and learn from him. I'm sure I'm going to grow as a professional and I'm looking forward to training," he continued.

"He's one of the best coaches in the world with everything he's won. I'm sure I'm going to learn a lot and improve a lot."

Willian is unavailable for Chelsea's Uefa Super Cup clash with Bayern Munich on Friday, so will have to wait until after the international break to make his Blues debut.

Chelsea near Eto'o move with two-year deal

    309263_heroa.jpg

Chelsea are set to offer Samuel Eto'o a two-year contract, Goal understands.

The Londoners will hold another round of talks with the striker's representatives in the next 24 hours as they attempt to secure a formal agreement.

Chelsea have switched their focus to Eto'o after abandoning their summer-long pursuit of Wayne Rooney.

Manchester United have refused to sell England's talisman to a club they regard as serious title rivals although they are understood to have given Arsenal encouragement that Rooney is available and a bid from Arsene Wenger's team is expected later this week.

Eto'o is regarded by Chelsea as a stop-gap signing but a necessary one given Jose Mourinho's misgivings about his current centre-forward trio of Fernando Torres, Romelu Lukaku and Demba Ba, with the former two starting on the bench against United and the Senegal international missing out altogether.

The 32-year-old Cameroon international is available for a fee of around €1.7 million due to the firesale at his current club Anzhi Makhachkala.

Eto'o has an excellent relationship with Jose Mourinho dating back to when he was an integral member of the Portuguese's 2009-10 Inter treble-winning side.

It is understood that the Chelsea manager has been in regular contact with Eto'o over the last week to persuade him to play under him for a second time.

A contract offer will be made imminently to Eto'o's representatives although the terms are not expected to come close to his world-record Anzhi salary.

Chelsea have already acquired playmaker Willian for €36m from the Russian club after stealing him from under the noses of Tottenham at the end of last week.

Eto'o's expected arrival at Chelsea is likely to herald the departure of Ba on a season-long loan. The Senagal striker has attracted strong interest from West Ham and Roma.

:cool:Manchester United agree new sponsorship deal

    306652_heroa.jpg

Manchester United have announced a three-year sponsorship deal with Federal Corporation.

Federal are one of Taiwan's leading tyre manufacturers and the deal involves the company becoming United's Official Tyre Partner in Russia and Taiwan.

United are hoping to raise their brand profile "in key markets" as competition for global awareness becomes tougher year-on-year.

Federal was established in 1954 and make an annual turnover of just over $300 million [£193m] and they hope the partnership with United will help them explore South American and Asian markets.

United’s group managing director, Richard Arnold, said in a statement: "Federal demonstrates passion, innovation and quality, making it an attractive partner for Manchester United.

"It is a company that prides itself on customer satisfaction and striving to be best in its field. These ambitions give us the confidence that our fans will benefit from this new and exciting partnership.

"The club has almost 18 million followers in Russia and with a third of Taiwanese football fans following United, we are able to provide Federal with a sizeable audience to engage with."

Walcott: Arsenal must aim for Premier League title
    308902_heroa.jpg

Theo Walcott has backed Arsenal to challenge for major honours this season after securing their passage to the Champions League group stage.

The Gunners sealed a 5-0 aggregate win over Fenerbahce on Tuesday night, three days after a convincing 3-1 win over Fulham in the Premier League.

And Walcott has now set his sights higher and called on his team-mates to challenge for the title and not settle for fourth spot.

"For a club like this, with the stadium, the support that we have - we have to be that," Walcott is quoted as saying by ESPN.

"We don't want to be [just] challenging for that fourth spot anymore. We want to challenge for the Premier League and that's our main goal.

"We know Arsenal's a massive club and where we need to be. What we need to do is get to the next level and compete a little bit more -- not just getting into the Champions League. The next step is to compete."

Aaron Ramsey scored in the first leg against Fenerbahce before hitting a double on Tuesday, and Walcott believes the Welshman could be key to Arsenal success this season.

"He ended the season last year very, very well, but this season he's just taken off and hit a new level. It's great to see because he deserves it after a lot of injury problems. I'm very happy for him."

'Pogba worth twice as much as Bale,' says agent

    307343_heroa.jpg

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba is worth twice as much as Real Madrid-bound winger Gareth Bale, according to his agent.

The 20-year-old Frenchman is one of the most highly rated young players in Europe, and his representative Mino Raiola says Pogba is worth comfortably more than the 24-year-old Welshman.

"How good is Paul? He's worth more than Gareth Bale, that's for sure," he told Sky Sport Italia.

"If Bale is worth €100 million, Pogba is worth at least double that.

"It's not my fault that [Madrid president] Florentino Perez has fixed the price of Bale at €100m. Pogba is, for me, a Salvador Dali because he is precious and important."

Pogba joined the Old Lady from Manchester United in 2012, and has established himself as a key player in Antonio Conte's title-winning side.

Bale, meanwhile, looks set for a move to los Blancos, in a deal that will see him become the most expensive player in the history of the game, eclipsing Cristiano Ronaldo's €94m move to the Bernabeu in 2009.

Mata is not for sale, insists Mourinho

    310094_heroa.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has reiterated that Juan Mata is not for sale after Arsene Wenger admitted he is a fan of the Spaniard.

Mata was benched for the draw against Manchester United, once again sparking intense speculation that he could be on his way out of Stamford Bridge this summer.

Arsenal boss Wenger revealed he rates the former Valencia man highly after his side's 2-0 Champions League qualifying victory over Fenerbahce on Tuesday.

But Mourinho insists he has no intention of parting with the man voted Chelsea's Player of the Year last season.

"There is no chance Juan goes," he told reporters.

"He had a very small pre-season after the Confederations Cup. And during that pre-season he was injured.

"He started training two days before we played the first league match.

"He played against Aston Villa and I decided to put him on the bench against United."

Mata was in stunning form last season, scoring 18 goals and notching up 34 assists in all competitions.

Bale fee not a problem for Uefa, says Platini

    267586_heroa.jpg

Uefa president Michel Platini has stressed that he has no problem with Real Madrid paying €100 million for Tottenham winger Gareth Bale.

The Santiago Bernabeu side are set to break the current world record transfer fee of €94m - set when Madrid signed Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United in 2009 - prompting significant debate over the size of the sum.

Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino stated at the weekend that €100m for one player shows "a lack of respect for the world we live in", but Platini insists it is not a problem provided Madrid have the means to pay the installments - although he questioned whether Bale is worth the sum.

"I don't have any objections against such a fee as long as the buying club can afford to pay €100m," Platini told L'Equipe.

"Nobody would have said anything about it if Madrid had decided to buy three players for €30m each.

"Whether Bale is worth €100m is an entirely different debate, though..."

The 24-year-old Bale failed to turn up to Tottenham training on Tuesday and is expected to finalise his move to Madrid imminently.

Chelsea swoop for Liverpool target Atsu

    285080_heroa.jpg

Chelsea are set to beat Liverpool to the signature of Porto winger Christian Atsu.

Jose Mourinho, who has already stolen Brazil international playmaker Willian from under the noses of Tottenham this summer, will now look to finalise a move for the highly-rated Ghana international.

Liverpool were in pole position to sign the 21-year-old before displaying a reluctance to meet the Portuguese club’s €4 million asking price for a player who has just a year left to run on his current contract.

Espanyol had also been in the running to sign Atsu and were willing to match the Portuguese club’s valuation but were unable to better the contract offers on the table from the Premier League giants - though they may yet get their hands on the player on a temporary basis this season.

Competition for places is intense at Stamford Bridge, particularly in the wide and attacking midfield positions, even ahead of Atsu’s imminent arrival.

Already this season the likes of Victor Moses and Juan Mata, two players who were crucial to Chelsea’s Europa League success last season, have struggled to force their way into Mourinho’s plans this term.

Mourinho, whose side have begun the season by claiming seven points from a possible nine available and face Bayern Munich in Friday’s European Super Cup, may well be willing to allow Atsu to leave on loan with Espanyol a potential destination.

Di Maria: I don’t want to leave Madrid

    225002_heroa.jpg

Angel di Maria insists he is happy to remain at Real Madrid and fight for his place in Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

Arsenal opened preliminary talks for the Argentina international last week while Galatasaray are also thought to be monitoring his situation as Gareth Bale's imminent arrival from Tottenham continues to cast doubt over his future in Spain.

The former Benfica man put in a man-of-the-match performance in Madrid’s 1-0 win away to Granada on Monday night, however, and says he has no intention of leaving the Spanish capital.

"I understand that the club is strengthening and they are precise in what they do," Di Maria told AS.

"But I signed up to 2018 just a year ago and my desire is to stay in the Bernabeu."

Di Maria joined Real Madrid from Benfica in June 2010 and has since made over 100 appearances for the club.
