Bayern Munich 2-2 Chelsea (5-4 on pens): Lukaku miss hands Guardiola's men the spoils

    311458hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich clinched UEFA Super Cup victory over Chelsea on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Eden Arena in Prague on Friday.

The Premier League outfit took the lead early in the first half when Fernando Torres brilliantly finished off a flowing move, but they were pegged back shortly after the break by a long-distance Franck Ribery strike.

Prior to the game going to extra time, Jose Mourinho's men lost Ramires to a second bookable offence, but they were back in front when Eden Hazard's effort deceived Manuel Neuer to restore their advantage.

However, a tap-in from substitute Javi Martinez at the death sent the game to penalties, where Neuer's save from Romelu Lukaku's weak effort handed Bayern the trophy.

With doubts over the fitness of Martinez and Bastian Schweinsteiger, Bayern boss Guardiola elected to start right-back Philipp Lahm in a holding midfield position.

Mourinho, meanwhile, handed Torres a return to action after the striker had been benched for Monday's 0-0 Premier League draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

And it did not take long for the Spaniard to reward his manager's faith, as he got on the scoresheet with just eight minutes on the clock.

Hazard was the catalyst, with the Belgian taking out two opponents with a jinking run before playing out wide to Andre Schurrle, who pulled back for Torres to smash the ball home.

Ribery almost provided a reply courtesy of a brilliant exchange with Mario Mandzukic at the edge of the Chelsea box, but he could not have expected Cech to somehow keep out his low curling effort with fantastic dive down to his left.

And he fired over from a similar position 10 minutes before the half-time whistle as Bayern were frustrated in their efforts to restore parity.

However, it did not take long for the newly named UEFA Best Player in Europe's quality to shine through in the second period.

The Chelsea defence appeared to have the 30-year-old under control as he ambled toward the box two minutes after the restart but, from nothing, the winger produced a clever shift onto his right before thrashing past Cech at his near post to level.

The goal understandably buoyed a Bayern side reliant on possession and forced Chelsea into attempting to replicate the sort of rearguard performance familiar throughout their victorious 2011-12 Champions League campaign.

But Mourinho's men were the recipients of the best opportunities of the second half, with Branislav Ivanovic heading onto the bar and David Luiz nodding straight at Neuer after Oscar had dithered when through on goal.

Unfortunately for the Portuguese boss, his side's hopes would receive a sizeable blow with just four minutes of normal time remaining as Ramires' poor challenge on substitute Mario Gotze brought him a second yellow card and ended his participation.

But incredibly, it was Chelsea who took the lead three minutes into added time.

Hazard's well-hit shot from the edge of the box looked destined for the safety of Neuer's gloves but the Germany international somehow misjudged the bounce and allowed the ball through his hands into the back of the net.

A series of fabulous saves from Cech in the second half of added time - from Manduzkic, Toni Kroos, Xherdan Shaqiri and Ribery - looked to have clinched the trophy for Chelsea, but there was still time for more drama.

After 15 minutes of seemingly unrelenting pressure, substitute Martinez was the recipient of a fortunate bounce in the Chelsea area with just seconds remaining and tapped the ball past Cech to send the game to penalties.

Much like they had been throughout a fabulous contest, the two teams were faultless from the spot, but with Lukaku looking set to send the shootout to sudden-death, the Belgian produced a weak effort that Neuer kept out down to his left.

The best team clearly lost – Mourinho

    311413_heroa.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has lamented his side’s 5-4 defeat to Bayern Munich on penalties in the European Super Cup.

Franck Ribery cancelled out Fernando Torres's opener to take the game to extra time, before Javi Martinez did the same after Eden Hazard had give then Blues a lead for the second time and Ramires had been sent off.

That left penalties to decide the winner, with Romelu Lukaku missing the decisive spot-kick after David Alaba, Toni Kroos, Philipp Lahm, Franck Ribery and Xherdan Shaqiri all beat Petr Cech from 12 yards.

“The best team clearly lost,” Mourinho said after the match. “The best team played with 10 men for a long, long period in the game. They played against the champions of Europe and they were the best team.

“We only have reasons to be proud, to believe in the future. But I prefer just to say the best team lost and stay with it.”

This was Chelsea's second Super Cup defeat in as many years, having lost 4-1 to Atletico Madrid a year ago.

Chelsea pursuit of Rooney is "finished", says Mourinho

    310924_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho admits that Chelsea's pursuit of Manchester United star Wayne Rooney is "finished", but insists he is happy with his squad after the purchase of Anzhi Makhachkala forward Samuel Eto'o.

The Blues' bid to buy the unsettled England striker has been one of the summer's longest-running transfer sagas, but the deal appeared to be over after Rooney publicly thanked the United fans for a warm reception while playing against Mourinho's men at Old Trafford on Monday.

And while the 50-year-old coach has failed in his attempts to lure David Moyes' player to Stamford Bridge, he says new signing Eto'o - who he worked with previously at Inter - will give his forward line some much-needed experience.

"No, no. For all parties, finished," he told Sky Sports after Chelsea lost the Uefa Super Cup to Bayern Munich 5-4 on penalties on Friday night. "One thing is to tell you through other people that you want, you want, you want, you want, you want, you want very much, but in the end of the day...

"It's the end [of our business]. We have a good group and Samuel [Eto'o] will give us other kind of qualities in attack - an experienced player in a team that needs some experienced players."

Mourinho insists he is not disappointed with Rooney's decision not to hand in a transfer request at United, suggesting the player has to do what he feels is right for his career and his life.

"No. I feel it's alright," he continued. "Everyone has to show his life, his future, so for me, I respect that a lot."

    Guardiola: Lahm cleverest I've coached

    310846_heroa.jpg

Pep Guardiola hailed Philipp Lahm as the "cleverest player he has ever worked with" after Bayern Munich lifted the Uefa Super Cup following a 5-4 penalty shootout win over Chelsea.

Chelsea led twice on the night, with Fernando Torres making it 1-0 before Franck Ribery levelled to take the game into extra time.

The Blues again took the lead, this time through Eden Hazard, but then saw Ramires sent off for a second yellow card, with Bayern leaving it late to pull level as Javi Martinez's last-gasp strike ensured a penalty shootout.

David Alaba, Toni Kroos, Philipp Lahm, Franck Ribery and Xherdan Shaqiri all converted their spot-kicks, while Manuel Neuer saved from Romelu Lukaku, to hand Bayern the trophy.

"Philipp Lahm is perhaps the most intelligent player I have ever trained in my career. He is at another level," Guardiola told reporters.

The 42-year-old was also quick to pay tribute to his predecessor Jupp Heynckes and thanked the former Bayern boss after the game.

Guardiola said: "Heynckes is the architect and creator of this title, I want to dedicate it to him."

Heynckes guided Bayern to the treble last season, but the club opted to appoint Guardiola his successor before the end of last season, with the Spaniard unnattached after embarking on a year-long footballing sabbatical upon leaving Barcelona.

The 42-year-old has guided Bayern to three wins and a draw from their opening four Bundesliga games but lost the DFL-Super Cup to Borussia Dortmund.

    Ribery: Super Cup for Pep

Franck Ribery dedicated Bayern Munich's Super Cup win over Chelsea to Pep Guardiola after the Bavarians emerged 5-4 victors on penalties following a 2-2 draw at the end of extra time.

The Blues took the lead through Fernando Torres but Ribery's second-half strike saw the game head into extra time, where Eden Hazard's goal looked to have sealed the win for Jose Mourinho's side.

But Javi Martinez intervened with the last kick of the game to take the match to penalties and Romelu Lukaku's miss handed the trophy to Bayern, after David Alaba, Toni Kroos, Philipp Lahm, Ribery and Xherdan Shaqiri had all converted from 12 yards.

The Frenchman said: "We fought until the last minute. It's a well-deserved success for Bayern. The victory is also important for Pep.

"I have a super relationship with Guardiola. It was an extraordinary moment when I rushed over to him [after scoring].

"I told him this is a goal for you, against Mourinho."

Juventus forced to sell Matri, says Conte

    302694_heroa.jpg

Antonio Conte has revealed Juventus were forced to sell Alessandro Matri to AC Milan for financial reasons after he moved to the Rossoneri in an €11 million deal.

The Bianconeri have enjoyed a productive summer transfer window, with Fernando Llorente, Carlos Tevez and Angelo Ogbonna all arriving at the club, but those deals have left a sizeable dent in the Old Lady's balance sheet.

In a bid to balance the books, Conte sanctioned Matri's exit on Thursday, having already sold Emmanuele Giaccherini to Sunderland, but admitted he did so with a heavy heart.

The 44-year-old told reporters: "Matri's departure was a painful decision for us but the current economic conditions in Italian football mean we're forced to sell.

"The sales of Matri and Giaccherini were painful decisions to make. I hear everyone say that the gap over the chasing pack has increased, when in reality we’ve been forced to lose an Italian international and a player who scored the most goals over the past two years and was also an important figure in the dressing room.

"This should represent a clear sign that the current economic conditions in Italian football also apply to Juventus. Aside from certain exceptions such as Napoli, clubs need to sell if they want to buy and we needed to recoup the €20 million spent on Tevez, Llorente and Ogbonna.”

Juve face Lazio on Saturday just a matter of weeks after dismantling the Biancocelesti 4-0 in the Italian Super Cup, but Conte is expecting a completely different encounter this time around.

"Tomorrow will be a different game entirely. A trophy was handed out in Rome and we’re happy to have won it, but the final score doesn’t reflect the difference between the sides."

    Tottenham confirm Eriksen signing

    286316_heroa.jpg

Tottenham have confirmed the signing of Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen from Ajax.

The 21-year-old is the third player to sign for Spurs on Friday after the club also announced deals for Erik Lamela and Vlad Chiriches earlier in the day, with Gareth Bale expected to join Real Madrid before the transfer window shuts next week.

The Danish international will bolster Andre Villas-Boas' attacking options as he seeks to ensure Spurs qualify for the Champions League this year after narrowly missing out to rivals Arsenal last season.

"We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Christian Eriksen," the club confirmed on their official Twitter account.

"Everyone has followed the development of Spurs and it's something I want to be part of", the player told the club's official website.

The Denmark international moved to Ajax in 2008, and played a total of 161 games for the Eredivisie club scoring 33 times.

Eriksen won three consecutive Dutch league championships from 2011-13, and had been capped 37 times by his country.

    Tello signs Barcelona extension

    267874_heroa.jpg

Cristian Tello has signed a two-year contract extension with Barcelona, taking his existing deal at Camp Nou to 2018.

The 22-year-old put pen to paper on a new deal earlier this year but the Blaugrana have rewarded the winger again in a bid to increase his buy-out clause, which now stands at €25 million.

Tello is a product of the club's famed La Masia youth system and made 29 appearances for the club last season and made his first outing of the new campaign in the 7-0 romp over Levante.

And he admitted his aim is to now become a firm fixture in coach Gerardo Martino's plans over the course of the next five years.

He told the club's official website: "I’m very happy to have renewed. It’s a dream to be able to stay for so many more years at this club. “I hope things remain as good as they are and that I can get to play. I’ll be taking all the chances the boss gives me and trying to do my best.”
Tello faces renewed competition for a first team spot at Camp Nou, with the club adding €54 million signing Neymar to their attacking ranks this summer.

Manchester United boss Moyes prepared for Anfield reception

    311354_heroa.jpg

David Moyes admits he is prepared for a fiery reception from Liverpool fans when he takes Manchester United to Anfield for the first time on Sunday.

Having managed city rivals Everton and the Reds' arch-enemies, the Scot knows that he will not be a popular man inside the stadium but is relishing the occasion.

United won on their last visit and completed the double over Brendan Rodgers's side later in the season, while Moyes has never won at Anfield, having only tasted victory on three occasions against Liverpool - but he is confident of turning that record around.

"Everybody tells me about the big rivalry between Liverpool and United and it was certainly there when I was at Everton as well," he told the press. "I would think I'll get as good a reception as I did with Everton.

"It has always been a difficult place to go but I am looking forward to going back there."

Moyes also refused to guarantee any new arrivals at Old Trafford ahead of the transfer deadline despite his pursuit of moves for Marouane Fellaini, Leighton Baines, Ander Herrera and Daniele De Rossi.

"I don't know how busy it's going to be but it's a busy football market," he added. "It might be busy in the next few days and I hope we do a little bit of business but I couldn't guarantee that.

"I wouldn't disclose any names, just let the clubs deal with it and we'll try and do it in a professional manner."

Kaka wants move to Italy or Premier League - agent

    306467_heroa.jpg

Kaka is set for a move to Italy or the Premier League before the end of the transfer window, according to the player's agent.

The Real Madrid midfielder revealed his desire to quit Santiago Bernabeu on Thursday, after a disappointing four years in the Spanish capital.

The Brazilian was a bit-part player under Manuel Pellegrini and Jose Mourinho but had hoped to kickstart his career in Madrid under the man who transformed him into one of the best players in the world at AC Milan, Carlo Ancelotti.

However, Kaka is yet to make a first team appearance under the Italian this season and his agent Diogo Kotscho believes a return to Italy or a Premier League switch is a very realistic possibility.

He said to Radio ESPN: "It's hard to talk about a possible destination now, but there is interest, including teams from Italy and England. It's hard to say where he is going now. It's not a secret that Kaka wants to go back to Italy but that depends on a lot of things.

"The Brazilian transfer window is closed. So is the one for the MLS. He wants to live in the United States in the final years of his career and sees some possibilities, but it will not happen at this moment."

The 31-year-old scored twice on Thursday night as Madrid beat Deportivo La Coruna 4-0 in a friendly to lift the Teresa Herrera trophy.

Kaka's current deal expires in June 2015.

Chalobah signs new five-year Chelsea contract

    283780_heroa.jpg

Chelsea academy graduate Nathaniel Chalobah has agreed a new five-year deal with the club.

The 18-year-old has yet to make his competitive debut for the Blues but impressed on loan with Watford last season as they lost out on promotion to the Premier League to play-off winners Crystal Palace.

Chalobah had just one year remaining on his existing contract and, having secured his long-term future with the club, the versatile England youth international is now targeting chances in the first team.

"It is great for me that Chelsea are willing to give me such a long contract, it is a big confidence boost," he told the club's official website.

"I think I have developed a lot as a player but I know I must continue to improve to earn a place in the Chelsea team and, with my future settled, I can concentrate on doing that.

"Watford was a great experience; I learned about playing in front of a crowd every game and so many other lessons that there are too many to list.

"Training with Jose Mourinho and the Chelsea squad this pre-season, every session has been different with something new to take on board. I've enjoyed it a lot."

Despite not playing competitively for the first-team squad, the Sierra Leone-born youngster, who can play in defence or midfield, featured during the club's pre-season tour of Asia and Jose Mourinho says that he is "very impressed" with what he has seen.

"He's a very, very good player and I like him very, very much," the Blues boss enthused. "I am very impressed. For sure he is a Chelsea player."

Juventus: Real Madrid asked about Pogba

    307056_heroa.jpg

Juventus director general Giuseppe Marotta has claimed Real Madrid have made enquiries into signing Paul Pogba but the club rejected their approach.

The young French midfielder impressed for the Serie A champions last season and that form attracted interest from los Blancos, according to Juve's director general.

Speaking at Thursday's Champions League draw in Monte Carlo, Marotta said the Turin giants turned down an approach for Pogba from Madrid.

"Florentino Perez enquired about him but there were no negotiations," Marotta told Sky Sport Italia.

The 20-year-old has become a key player in Antonio Conte's side following a switch from Manchester United in the summer of 2012.

The midfielder clocked up 38 appearances in all competitions for Juve last season, and made his senior France debut at the beginning of 2013 and Marotta insists they want to hold on to their star man,

He said: "We have no intention of selling him as he's no yet expressed his full potential."
