Police warn Tottenham and Chelsea fans over use of Y-word

    192445_heroa.jpg

Tottenham and Chelsea fans have been warned by the Metropolitan Police over the use of the Y-word at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

The term, which originated as a derogatory word to describe a person of Jewish faith, has been used to abuse Spurs supporters due to the origins of a section of the club's fanbase.

Tottenham fans have since adopted the term, however, and the police have indicated use of the word "under certain circumstances" will result in supporters being removed from the stadium.

"In particular they [the Metropolitan Police] will be monitoring for anti-Semitic abuse and offenders will be ejected," a statement on the club's official website reads.

The statement continues: "They have made it clear that this includes the use of the Y-word under certain circumstances - we should, therefore, like to ask all fans to be mindful of their use of this term."

Chelsea have also issued a statement warning fans over the use of anti-semitic chants towards Spurs fans.

"Tottenham supporters using the Y-word as a form of identity is not an excuse for abusive chanting," the club said.

"All forms of discriminatory behaviour and language are abhorrent and this includes the 'Y' word."

    Klopp anticipates tough Freiburg clash

    318717_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp admits he is anticipating a difficult match against Freiburg on Saturday in light of BVB's chequered form of late.

Die Borussen overcame 1860 Munich 2-1 in extra time in the DFB Pokal on Tuesday but were held to a 1-1 draw last weekend at Nurnberg, on the back of suffering a 2-1 Champions League defeat to Napoli.

Despite sitting in 17th place in the Bundesliga, Freiburg have lost just once in their last six matches and Klopp feels they will pose a tough challenge.

“Freiburg are a lot better than their table position would suggest,” he told reporters.

“They are doing a great job in Freiburg, even if it has taken a while. It looks a lot like Freiburg football again.”

A busy fixture list and injuries to many key players has left Klopp with a selection dilemma but Dortmund will welcome back Marcel Schmelzer from injury against an energetic Freiburg side.

“Freiburg has racked up the most kilometres so far. We will need to run a lot, invest a lot of energy and play a lot of football," Klopp added.

With Ilkay Gundogan still unavailable with a back problem, Sven Bender and Nuri Sahin look set to continue at the base of Dortmund's midfield this weekend.

Tottenham star Eriksen eager to face Chelsea

    322101_heroa.jpg

Christian Eriksen says he is eager to be in the Tottenham starting XI to face Chelsea in their London derby on Saturday afternoon.

The Dane moved to White Hart Lane at the end of the summer transfer window from Ajax and is yet to taste defeat in three appearances for Spurs.

Eriksen has started both Premier League games since his move and is desperate to be involved in Andre Villas-Boas' side on Saturday.

"For sure, these are the games that I came to the Premier League for, a big match against a local rival and one of the top teams in Europe," the 21-year-old told the club's official website.

"Every player wants to play on Saturday, to be a part of it and to feel the atmosphere. It's my first London derby and I'm really looking forward to it.

"Chelsea are a top team and this is a game which will show how far we have come and how far we can go this season.

"They haven't been as convincing as they can be perhaps, but we know it will be tough and we will need to be at our best if we are to beat them."

Eriksen is yet to open his Premier League goalscoring account but did find the net in Tottenham's Europa League win overTromso earlier this month.

    Mandzukic predicts Bayern win

    318352_heroa.jpg

Mario Mandzukic says Bayern Munich will be well prepared for Wolfsburg and is predicting a sixth consecutive victory for the club on Saturday.

Die Roten sit joint top of the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund after six games and recorded a 4-0 win away to Schalke in their last league outing prior to Wednesday's 4-1 DFB-Pokal win over Hannover - with the striker expecting more of the same.

“I know what makes them tick,” he told reporters.

“Wolfsburg will definitely give everything to win here. But we’re well prepared and we know we’re in good form.

“It has to end with a Bayern win.”

Midfielder Franck Ribery shared the sentiments of the Croatia striker and urged his team-mates to maintain the standard of their their recent displays.

“We have to concentrate and keep playing like we have done recently, because if we do, we have a big chance of winning.”

Former Bayern midfielder Luiz Gustavo looks set to face the club he left over the summer after returning from suspension and Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking remains optimistic over his side's chances.

“Playing Bayern is like food that’s tough to digest, but it can taste good too," he said.

“It’s entirely up to Bayern whether or not they let you have a chance. But if they do, we have to take advantage of that out on the field.”

Sampdoria clash is a must-win for AC Milan, says Allegri

    320832_heroa.jpg

Massimiliano Allegri believes AC Milan's clash with Sampdoria is a must-win game as they look to put their dismal run of form behind them.

Two last-gasp goals earned the Rossoneri a point against Bologna in midweek, although they remain 10 points adrift of current Serie A leaders Roma after just five matches.

Allegri has urged his side to rediscover their winning ways on Saturday but believes they will be in a position to challenge at the top of the table come the midway point of the season.

"If we have five points from five games, it's my fault," he told a press conference on Friday. "We have to concentrate on just doing well. We have a difficult game tomorrow.

"Delio Rossi is an excellent coach and Sampdoria are coming off the back of a good display against Roma. But we have to win.

"I’ll look at the league table at Christmas. I think we will be in a different position by then. We’re a bit behind, but there are still plenty of games left. Let’s just think about winning tomorrow."

Allegri was eager to move on from the fall-out surrounding Mario Balotelli's three-game ban for arguing with officials against Napoli, insisting the striker is aware he must improve his behaviour on the pitch.

"His dismissal happened six days ago, I think we need to stop talking about it now," he said.

"He’s said sorry and now he needs to think about working hard. He needs to improve the way he reacts on the pitch. I hope he knows that and understands that."

Striker Alessandro Matri is likely to deputise for the suspended Balotelli on Saturday despite having failed to score in five appearances for Milan this season, but Allegri is confident he will rediscover his goalscoring touch.

"He is working hard. He had three chances against Bologna, two clear ones, but he has to stay calm as the goals will come," he added.

Referees make mistakes, nothing more - Ancelotti

    301185_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti believes referees should not be blamed for mistakes on the pitch any more than players or coaches.

Los Blancos were awarded a highly-controversial penalty late in the game against Elche in midweek, allowing them to seal a 2-1 win, but Ancelotti pointed to Juan Cala's disallowed goal for Sevilla against Barcelona earlier in the season as proof that officials cannot be expected to get decisions right all the time.

"I think [Saturday] will be a difficult game with a lot of pressure but I don't believe the referee was conditioned like that at Elche," he told a press conference.

"I prefer to think that referees, like players, make mistakes on the pitch, nothing more. It is not for me to judge if it was a penalty or not on Pepe or if it was a goal or not for Cala at Camp Nou. Coaches also make mistakes."

Ancelotti went on to reveal that Gareth Bale should be ready to return to action in the derby with Atletico Madrid this weekend after recovering from a thigh injury.

"Marcelo is not available. For Bale, we'll wait and see in training if he will be ready. I think he will. Then I have to make the decision if he will start or be on the bench," the Italian explained.

Atletico head into the game with a 100 per cent record to date in La Liga, but Ancelotti believes his side have the greater quality ahead of the crunch clash at the Bernabeu.

"It's hard to say if Atleti are more of a team than us. They are very compact and play very well. Of course, they are more aggressive than us and have more physical strength, but we have more quality. We are two different teams," the 54-year-old added.

"We'll give our best to win and after the game against Elche I think we'll play with a different spirit."

Laudrup: Swansea must take their chances against Arsenal

    262097_heroa.jpg

Michael Laudrup has warned his Swansea City players they must take their chances if they are to beat Arsenal on Saturday.

The Gunners go into the sixth round of fixtures at the top of the table, having won their last four Premier League games after losing on the opening day against Aston Villa, and, while the Dane is expecting a tough game at the Liberty Stadium, he wants his team to be more clinical.

"It will be important for us to stop the balls between the lines because they are a very dangerous side with attacking players. That is a key area," he told reporters, "but we also have to take our chances.

"When you create so many chances – and that is a major positive – against huge sides like Liverpool and Valencia, you need to score. We have an average of two goals a game but I think we can do better. We need to take our chances more often - we saw that in the Capital One Cup in midweek [losing to Birmingham City] and we were made to pay for that."

Laudrup feels his side can take confidence into the game from their performances against the Gunners in 2012-13.

"We had some good games last season," he enthused. "From our point of view, we always remember the league game in London which we won 2-0 but we also had good games [at home] too - in the cup and in the league. I am looking forward to a very exciting game."

The Dane also took time out to praise the Gunners, whom he feels have bounced back well from their opening-day disappointment.

"It's great what they have done so far this season. They lost the first game and then people were saying they would find it tough this year," he explained, "but they have gone on to win their next four league games and some tough European games and now they are top of the league.

"For us, this is the third game at home in the league – we have faced the champions [Manchester United] and then the leaders [Liverpool]. Now we face another club that is top of the table so it's been tough but this is what the Premier League is about."

Injured Aguero ruled out of Manchester City’s trip to Aston Villa

    320168_heroa.jpg

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has revealed that Sergio Aguero will miss Saturday's trip to Aston Villa.

The Argentine international scored twice in Sunday's 4-1 thrashing of neighbours Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium but picked up an injury during the game.

While Pellegrini expects the striker to be fit in time for Wednesday's Champions League game against Bayern Munich, he confirmed that his star will not be risked at Villa Park.

"Aguero finished the last derby in the last play with a small pain - I think it was nothing important but I think it was a risk for him to play three games in the same week," he told reporters.

"We will leave him for next Wednesday but he will be absolutely fine."

David Silva is also expected to miss out once again as he recovers from a thigh problem, with Pellegrini explaining that he has an outside chance of playing on Wednesday, adding only: "We will see in the week."

The City boss also insists that his team will not be distracted by the upcoming clash against the European champions and will need to play well to beat Paul Lambert's side.

"I am sure nobody is thinking about Bayern Munich. We are all thinking about Aston Villa," he remarked.

"We know it is a strong team playing at home. We need to play a very good game if we want to win and we need to win away now."

Martino: Iniesta is an emblem of Barcelona

    307771_heroa.jpg

Gerardo Martino has described Andres Iniesta as an "emblem" of Barcelona and is confident he will soon sign a new contract.

The 29-year-old is yet to agree a new deal as the club attempt to tie him down beyond 2015, although the Spain international insisted earlier this week he was not "at war" with Barca over the negotiations.

Martino has now described Iniesta as a symbol of the Blaugrana and remains fully confident he will soon commit to new terms.

"In every club there are players who are images of their clubs. I see Iniesta as an image of Barca," Martino told a press conference on Friday. "I think it's quite logical he should renew, I see him as one of the emblematic players at the club and we want him to stay."

The former Newell's Old Boys coach went on to discuss the fitness of Lionel Messi, stressing his belief that his management of the player's fitness was paying off despite the Argentine's frustration at being substituted in the win over Real Sociedad.

"Messi's looking good. I can't compare him to how he was in other seasons at this stage, but he's looking very good indeed. He recovers well from one game to the next. Against Rayo [Vallecano] he didn't score but it was one of the best games he's played since I've been here.

"Of course they don't like being taken off - no player does. I don't ask them about being rotated because I know what they'll say to me. The important thing is that they are fit for the final stages of the season next year."

Martino also believes Neymar will benefit from a similar pattern of rest due to his exhaustive commitments with the Brazil national team.

"Neymar's case is similar to Messi's. Neymar will get his chances, as I said previously. Taking into account the internationals he played in August, he's played more minutes than anyone in the squad apart from goalkeeper Victor Valdes. Now he's been called up to the Brazil squad and in previous friendly games he's played the full 90 minutes.

"I want to look after him, protect him. He's got to rest. The important thing is that the players are in good shape towards the end of the season. There's been games every three and a half days - that's a lot of football."

Real Madrid were given a fortunate penalty to beat Elche near the end of the match on Wednesday, but Martino refused to criticise the officiating in Spain, instead calling on his side to focus on maintaining their own strong run of form.

"It's difficult to talk about referees. Sometimes you don't want to talk just after a game when it's not the right time. There's no point in throwing referees to the lions," he said.

"I didn't see the game. As for the [Madrid] derby, it'll be a good game to watch. It's certainly the game of the week. Of course, we've got to think about winning our games. The important thing is that we beat Almeria."

Finally, Martino indicated that Carles Puyol was close to a return following a lengthy injury lay-off, but refused to divulge whether Marc Bartra would keep his place in the starting XI.

"Bartra? I won't mention the starting line-up. The best thing about Marc is his character, he's a young player, although he has to be more relaxed in games.

"Puyol? He had a practice game with the youngsters, that went well. He played almost the whole game. He's been out for seven months but he's much closer to coming back.

"When a player is injured we will not rush them back. The important thing is for them to recover fully."

Stekelenburg may need operation, reveals Fulham boss Jol

    321975_heroa.jpg

Fulham boss Martin Jol fears that Maarten Stekelenburg may need an operation as he continues to suffer with a shoulder injury.

The Dutch goalkeeper signed for the club during the close-season but injured his shoulder during his debut against Sunderland last month.

He has been on the sidelines ever since and Jol is not sure when he will be able to call on the 31-year-old again.

Stekelenburg has been able to take part in some aspects of training but his participation has so far been limited, amid concerns over aggravating the problem further.

"If it is not right in two weeks' time, then he will probably need an operation," Jol said.

"It’s already five weeks now, so it's certainly long-term. He had a few injections in his shoulder and it's quite sensitive.

"He trains but when he stretches he feels a lot of pain, so we have to be very careful."

David Stockdale has deputised for the injured goalkeeper so far this season but has only kept one clean sheet as Fulham have made a stuttering start to the campaign.

Rodgers wants Liverpool to be in the top six at Christmas

    321972_heroa.jpg

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has challenged his team to maintain their solid start to the Premier League and be in the top six at Christmas.

After three wins and a draw from their opening four matches of the season, Liverpool were the early pace-setters in the league, though defeat to Southampton saw them relinquish top spot.

Another defeat to Manchester United in the League Cup on Wednesday means Rodgers' side only have the league to focus on until they enter the FA Cup in the new year - and the 46-year-old wants his side to use that to their advantage.

"Now we can only concentrate on the league up until Christmas," he said. "So we have to make sure we stay up in that top six in the league and keep fighting and hopefully we can reinforce in January.

"I think the players have made an excellent start. We were flat and subdued at the weekend [against Southampton] and we couldn't get going - part of that was because of the players we had available."

Rodgers has also challenged Raheem Sterling to focus on improving his performances on the pitch after more problems off it.

The winger was arrested for alleged assault earlier this year, although the case against him was dropped and he was officially cleared.

"Raheem needs to have a clear mind in everything in his life - he needs to stabilise his life," Rodgers added.

"We mustn’t forget he is 18 - but he has to understand the remarkable opportunity he has at one of the biggest clubs in the world and focus everything in on his career.

"Once he does that and he is clear in his mind, he has no distractions and we can get to the level of performance of the first four or five months of last season."

Messi arrives in court for tax fraud case

    322001_heroa.jpg

Barcelona star Lionel Messi and his father have arrived in court to answer charges of alleged tax fraud.

Messi is appearing before a Spanish court after a complaint was lodged by a state prosecutor in June stating that he and his father Jorge tried to conceal earnings from the player's image rights.

The pair were originally ordered to appear at the court near Messi's home outside of Barcelona on September 17 but the date was postponed.

Both the Argentina forward and his father have denied any wrongdoing but the charges state that they hid more than €4 million by filing incomplete returns for the years 2006 to 2009.

"I never take care of that [tax] stuff myself and neither does my father," Messi said in July. "We have our lawyers and our wealth managers to take care of that and we trust them and they will sort this out.

"The truth is I don’t have a clue about all this and that is why we have people taking care of it."

Messi has already made a corrective payment to Spanish authorities of just over €5m - the unpaid tax plus interest - and Friday's hearing will determine whether the case is pursued any further.

The Barcelona man's father was due in court first, with Messi himself scheduled to be questioned an hour later.

Roma among favourites now - Strootman

    301285_heroa.jpg

Roma attacker Kevin Strootman believes that the Serie A table-toppers are now among the favourites to win the Scudetto this season.

The Giallorossi have begun 2013-14 with five straight wins from as many games and sit two points clear of Inter, Napoli and Juventus.

While the Dutchman admits that the Bianconeri remain the obvious choice to finish top in Italy he stressed that the team spirit and individual quality can help Roma challenge.

"Juventus remain the favourites for the Scudetto, but Roma are there too," he told Sky Sport. I was so impressed by the way we celebrated the win at Sampdoria, all together including the kit staff.

"Head coach Rudi Garcia came in and improved everything that wasn’t working. We’ve got great players here, as Miralem Pjanic is a real talent and Daniele De Rossi knows how to do everything.

"I don't feel pressure because of the sum invested in me, no."

Godin: Ronaldo can be decisive in the derby

    320256_heroa.jpg

Diego Godin believes Cristiano Ronaldo is the only player that separates Atletico and Real Madrid.

After winning their opening six La Liga games of the season, Diego Simeone's troops currently sit one place and two points above their city rivals in the table heading into Saturday's derby at the Santiago Bernabeu.

And Godin reckons his side would be equal to their more illustrious neighbours. were it not for the in-form 28-year-old.

“In Isco, Real have a player who can do something different and we have Diego Costa, David Villa, Koke and Arda who contribute a lot and provide resource to win games," the Uruguay international told Marca.

“Yet the most decisive player is Ronaldo, as he can win any game with his goals. Real are the favourites but we know how to win at the Bernabeu. Physically and technically we are in great condition.

“We arrive in the best way to tackle a derby. We have great confidence, we are playing well and scoring goals.”

Atletico know how to beat Real Madrid, says Courtois

    295289_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has expressed his confidence that his side can overcome Real Madrid in Saturday's derby.

Diego Simeone's men conquered the Blancos in last season's Copa del Rey final at the Santiago Bernabeu and the Belgium star sees no reason why Atleti cannot bag another win at their arch-rivals' ground.

"We have a great team and we know how to beat them," Courtois told reporters on Thursday. "It is three points more, it is another final. As a footballer, I never play to draw a game, but to win.

"Can we maintain our current form? There are players who will have good moments and others who will not, but I think that the whole team can maintain the current level. The team is still good with one or with the other."

The addition of €100 million man Gareth Bale does not strike fear into Courtois, who revealed he has been given tips from Tottenham players on how to save his set pieces, and he is well aware of Cristiano Ronaldo's quality from dead ball situations.

The 21-year-old added: "In goal I am always worried when they go to take a free kick, but you learn in discussions and through videos of the players.

"With Belgium I have come up against Bale, while some friends who play at Tottenham have told me how he hits his free kicks. I am into my third year in La Liga and I already know how fantastic Cristiano’s free kicks can be.

"But, Koke can take free kicks too and takes very good corners, which are a danger to any team."

Atletico have started 2013-14 in excellent style, winning all six of their opening six Liga matches to sit behind reigning champions Barcelona on goal difference and two points ahead of Real Madrid.

Inter are not as bad as first thought

    321846_heroa.jpg

The worst Inter squad of the Massimo Moratti era, with no chance of Champions League qualification; even a possible outsider for relegation, so said the Serie A experts just over a month or so ago.

But following Inter's 2-1 win over high-flying Fiorentina on Thursday night at San Siro, it is evidently clear that the Nerazzurri are not the no-hopers they were painted out to be before the season started.

After five matchdays, only Roma sit above Inter at the top of the Serie A table. The 2010 Champions League winners have won four and drawn one, scored the most goals in the division and conceded only twice. And their start to the season has been anything but easy, having also encountered holding champions Juventus in week three.

With 18 minutes to go against Fiorentina, it seemed as if new coach Walter Mazzarri's honeymoon period after arriving from Napoli in the summer was about to end, as the home side trailed to a Giuseppe Rossi penalty. But late goals from Esteban Cambiasso and Jonathan completed a dramatic recovery.

Mazzarri has already worked wonders at Appiano Gentile. There is no doubt that, personnel-wise, this is a very limited Inter squad. Technically, the Nerazzurri are no match for the likes of Juventus, Napoli, Roma or even a Fiorentina side, who were missing arguably their three best players in Mario Gomez, Juan Cuadrado and David Pizarro. But physically, mentally and tactically, Mazzarri's work is already paying off.

Having conceded a whopping 57 goals on their way to a disastrous ninth-placed finish last season, Mazzarri's 3-5-1-1 has shorn up an Inter backline that has been exceptionally organised thus far. The gameplan has been very simple – pack the defence, leave no gaps for the opposition, and then counter-attack at lightning pace with as many bodies as possible as soon as the ball is stolen.

    317395hp2.jpg

Silencing their critics | Inter have started the season promisingly

Some of the detractors have labelled Mazzarri's tactics as 21st-century Catenaccio, but with the squad at his disposal it is clearly the best strategy – and one that is working. Every Inter player is supremely fit, and this proved decisive on Thursday as Fiorentina tired in the closing stages. Players who were a laughing stock under previous regimes, such as Ricky Alvarez, Jonathan and Juan Jesus, have been transformed. All positive signs ahead of the likely takeover by Indonesian businessman Erick Thohir.

There is a togetherness - highlighted by Cambiasso after the Fiorentina clash - that hasn't been present since Jose Mourinho embraced a tearful Marco Materazzi on that famous night in Madrid in May 2010. The Argentine midfielder said: “You can see that Inter have an identity once more and if that is accompanied by results too then it’s even better.

“Tonight we had a great reaction to going behind. The team is united and the fans can go home happy. Fiorentina really pressured us in the first half, but we knew they couldn’t keep that tempo up and struck at the right moment."

However, while it is still very early days - the Nerazzurri were second in November last season but finished ninth - and there are undoubtedly better teams in Serie A, one thing cannot be disputed: Inter are not as bad as everyone first thought.

    Balotelli targets Milan Christmas comeback

    321729_heroa.jpg

Mario Balotelli believes that AC Milan will be back among the top Serie A spots by Christmas, having endured a poor start to 2013-14.

The Rossoneri sit in 12th, already 10 points behind table-topping Roma and seven points adrift of the third place they claimed last season, but the former Manchester City striker insists that the club are not beneath any club in Serie A, quality-wise.

"We can return to the top by Christmas," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "We are not inferior to anyone, we just change things up.

"This season's title race promises to be very balanced, it will be exciting. It's not like the days of [Roberto] Mancini and [Jose] Mourinho, when Inter were stronger than everyone else."

Balotelli's sending off against Napoli last weekend caused a stir, forcing him to publicly apologise and the 23-year-old admits that newspapers' criticism of him reminded him of being back in England.

"I ran away from the Premier League because the newspapers hammered me," he added.

"Now, in Italy, things are not much better. But I'm glad to be back at AC Milan, the club for which I always supported as a child."

Although Massimiliano Allegri pulled no punches with his criticism of his star striker's red card on Sunday, Balotelli says that his relationship with the Milan coach remains favourable.

"With Allegri, we're okay," the Italy international added. "We play well, we hope to follow him as a team, but we need a little more than luck to get back among the top three or four and to play a part in the second half of the season."

:cool:Van Persie fit to face West Brom, says Moyes

    321373_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager David Moyes says striker Robin van Persie has recovered from injury and is fit enough to face West Brom on Saturday.

The Netherlands international missed Sunday’s 4-1 Premier League defeat to Manchester City and the midweek win over Liverpool with a groin injury.

However, the Scot has revealed Van Persie is fit again and could feature against Steve Clarke’s men at Old Trafford on Saturday.

"Robin will be back, involved somewhere. He trained today and is fit. But we'll have to see exactly where he is," he told reporters.

"Tom [Cleverley] has done a bit of training today. He rocked his knee in training and hopefully he won't be too far away."

Moyes admitted that he still had much to learn as United boss but once again took time to praise his players for bouncing back from Sunday's thrashing at the hands of their neighbours.

"I have been learning every week since the day I walked in. I don't think that's going to change for a long time," he added.

"We made seven or eight changes. We made sure everybody at Manchester United was able to show what they can do.

"The players showed they were hurt. We'll try to give the fans something to shout about again tomorrow."

United face a West Brom side that were knocked out of the Capital One Cup by Arsenal in midweek but Moyes is still expecting a tough test and is looking forward to meeting up with former Everton striker Victor Anichebe.

"Steve Clarke has done a great job. West Brom is a stable football club that has continued to progress," he said.

"I'm pleased he [Anichebe] got a good move. I hope he does well - but not against us."
