Crystal Palace 0-2 Arsenal: Szczesny heroics secure the points for 10-man Gunners

    332935hp2.jpg

Mikel Arteta was both hero and villain as 10-man Arsenal beat Crystal Palace to remain top of the Premier League.

The Spaniard stroked in a 47th-minute penalty to give the Gunners the lead after Serge Gnabry was fouled by Adlene Guedioura, but was then dismissed for bringing down Marouane Chamakh as the last man.

But Wojciech Szczesny made several superb saves to prevent Palace finding an equaliser, and Olivier Giroud headed in Aaron Ramsey's scooped cross to seal the win late on.

Keith Millen, taking temporary charge of Palace following the departure of Ian Holloway, made six changes to the side beaten by Fulham, with Jerome Thomas, Barry Bannan and Chamakh coming into the side, while Mathieu Flamini and Santi Cazorla returned to Arsenal’s line-up in place of Jack Wilshere and Tomas Rosicky. Arsenal created their first chance after just three minutes when Giroud headed Bacary Sagna's right-wing cross just over the crossbar.

The visitors were forced to change things inside the first 10 minutes, though, Flamini replaced by Gnabry after he limped off with an apparent groin injury.
Palace competed well for large periods of the first half, and had opportunities to take the lead themselves, Bannan heading over before Chamakh tested Szczesny with a long-range effort.

Both sides continued to trade chances in an open game, although Arsenal were aggrieved not to have been awarded a penalty as Chris Foy ruled that Damien Delaney's foul on Gnabry had been outside of the box.

But Foy did point to the spot when Gnabry was brought down by Guedioura less than two minutes into the second half, enabling Arteta to step up and fire home confidently from 12 yards.

Wenger's men began to dictate proceedings following the opener and should have doubled their advantage shortly after, Giroud missing the target from point-blank range after good work down the right from Sagna. However, the game was completely changed after 65 minutes when goalscorer Arteta was shown a straight red card for pulling down Chamakh as the Moroccan attempted to break through on goal.

Palace immediately began to take charge following Arteta's dismissal, Szczesny performing heroics to tip Joel Ward's fierce effort onto the crossbar before producing another flying save to keep out Mile Jedinak's volley.

But Giroud wrapped things up three minutes from time to end the hosts' hopes of a late leveller.

Aston Villa 0-2 Everton: Lukaku & Osman seal the points for Martinez’s men

    333013hp2.jpg

Romelu Lukaku came back to haunt Aston Villa as he netted in Everton's 2-0 win at Villa Park on Saturday.Villa manager Paul Lambert admitted during the week that he tried to sign Lukaku last season and the Belgian star netted his fifth league goal of the season as he swept home Leon Osman's pass from the edge of the box in the 68th minute.

Villa Park hosted the two teams’ 197th meeting, the English top flight’s most-played fixture, and both sides looked determined to claim three points as chances flowed at both ends.

The home side almost got off to an excellent start as Christian Benteke was tripped by Seamus Coleman in the area, but Tim Howard was down quickly to his right to tip his eighth-minute penalty over.

Benteke and Andreas Weimann wasted further chances, while Ross Barkley struck the crossbar from range in front of England manager Roy Hodgson.
Substitute Osman secured the three points for Roberto Martinez’s Everton in the final 10 minutes as he slid a left-footed shot past Guzan following Gareth Barry’s cut-back to the 18-yard line.

Lambert was able to welcome Benteke back after a month out with a thigh injury, while Osman was replaced by Steven Pienaar in Everton's only change.Villa looked the livelier side in the early stages and should have broken the deadlock when Benteke won himself a penalty, only for Howard to deny him.

Howard frustrated Benteke once more in the 23rd minute as the striker was played through on goal, but after coming in from the left saw the United States international palm his controlled effort away as chances started to become more commonplace.

Everton ended an entertaining first half on top as Barkley saw his long-range effort crash off the crossbar, before Kevin Mirallas weaved his way into the 18-yard box and poked wide.Seven minutes into the second half, Barkley tried his luck from range again, but this time he missed the target altogether as his effort flew wide.

Fabian Delph was also trying to leave his mark on the match and his side-footed shot from the edge of the area looked goal-bound, but Phil Jagielka made a crucial block with his shoulder.Everton eventually took the lead with 22 minutes left when Lukaku hit a low shot past Guzan 17 yards from goal.

Everton’s second away win from 13 matches was completed in the 81st minute as Osman curled the ball past Guzan, leaving Villa just outside the relegation zone.

Norwich City 0-0 Cardiff City: Stalemate for strugglers

    332952hp2.jpg

Norwich were denied a last-gasp win against Cardiff when a late Leroy Fergoal was ruled out to ensure the game ended goalless.

Fer was expected to give the ball back to Cardiff from a 94th-minute throw in given after the visitors had put the ball out of play at Carrow Road, but the Dutchman inadvertently rolled the ball into the net with keeper David Marshall out of his goal.

Rather than award the goal, though, referee Mike Jones ordered Norwich to retake the thrown in - much to the disgust of the home supporters.
This controversy came at the end of a match lit up by the heroics of Marshall.

The 28-year-old - who played for Norwich between 2007 and 2009 - produced a string of fine saves in his first outing against his former club to deny the hosts their second Premier League home win of the season on Saturday.

Jonny Howson and Leroy Fer went closest to breaking the deadlock for the hosts in the first half but could not find a way past Scotland international Marshall.
And Marshall continued his one-man mission to keep a clean sheet as he denied substitute Nathan Redmond and Fer after the break,

His opposite number - John Ruddy - was rarely tested as Malky Mackay’s men struggled to create chances, but, when they did, the 27-year-old made an excellent save from Jordan Mutch.

The goalless draw sees both sides end a run of two consecutive defeats in the Premier League, but leaves Norwich in the bottom three with eight points from nine matches.

Chris Hughton’s side were unchanged from their defeat to Arsenal last time out, with Ricky van Wolfswinkel returning to the bench having recovered from his recent foot injury. The visitors brought Fraizer Campbell and Kim Bo-Kyung in to their starting line-up in place of Don Cowie and Aron Gunnarsson.

Norwich went close after just five minutes when Martin Olsson let fly from the edge of the penalty area. Anthony Pilkington fired a corner low to the Sweden international but his left-foot strike whistled just over the crossbar.

Ruddy was called into action for the first time in the 25th minute as Campbell raced away from Michael Turner inside the penalty area before pulling the ball back into the path of Mutch, only for the home goalkeeper to save brilliantly at his feet.
After that shock, Norwich resumed their dominance but could not find their way past the inspired Marshall. He made two good saves from Howson and was well placed during a goalmouth scramble to stop the ball on the line.

And when the Cardiff keeper was finally beaten, he had Peter Whittingham to thank as the midfielder cleared Fer’s effort off the line from another Pilkington corner in 31st minute. The second half began as the first had ended and Gary Hooper went close to opening the scoring. The forward met a corner inside the penalty area, but his flicked header dropped just wide of the post.

Cardiff’s only chance after the break fell to Whittingham but he wasted a free-kick just after the hour. The normally dependable midfielder fired straight into the Norwich wall from a promising position 20 yards out.

Redmond - who replaced Pilkington in the 71st minute - nearly made an immediate impact when he was released on the left, but the winger’s shot towards the top corner was parried away by the irrepressible Marshall.

Marshall again denied Fer from close range, before the injury-time drama that saw the Dutchman's 'goal' disallowed.

Liverpool 4-1 West Brom: Stunning Suarez hat-trick blows Baggies to bits

    332968hp2.jpg

Luis Suarez netted a magnificent hat-trick as Liverpool saw off West Bromwith ease in a 4-1 victory at Anfield. Steve Clarke’s team were chasing a fourth consecutive Premier League win over Liverpool but a virtuoso display from Suarez ensured that was never on the cards.

A solo effort and a stunning 18-yard header gave the hosts a 2-0 lead at the break and Suarez’s treble was complete when he converted Steven Gerrard’s 55th-minute free kick.

A generous penalty decision allowed substitute James Morrison to hand West Brom a lifeline but Daniel Sturridge crowned a highly satisfying afternoon for Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers with a breathtaking long-range lob.

Both teams made a solitary change from last weekend's action – Victor Moses dropping to the bench to accommodate Lucas Leiva in the Liverpool line-up, while West Brom forward Saido Berahino suffered a similar fate as Nicolas Anelka started against his former club.

Suarez was at the heart of the action from the off, scuffing wide from 20 yards in the seventh minute before tangling with West Brom defender Gareth McAuley and tumbling in the area.

Referee Jon Moss was not interested in the penalty claims, leaving the Uruguay international to take matters into his own hands with a brilliant 12th-minute opener.
Collecting a pass from Kolo Toure, Suarez displayed supreme balance and technique as he burst clear of Claudio Yacob, nutmegged Jonas Olsson and slotted beyond goalkeeper Boas Myhill.

It was 2-0 five minutes later when Suarez worked the ball left to wing-back Aly Cissokho and continued his run to plant a remarkable header into the top corner from the 18-yard line.

Martin Skrtel should have made it three before the half hour, missing his kick with the goal gaping on the back of a cleverly worked set-piece involving Suarez and Gerrard.

Morgan Amalfitano limped off to be replaced by Morrison and apparently complete West Brom's first-half misery but Skrtel was required to make a goal-saving tackle in stoppage time when Anelka rounded Simon Mignolet from Olsson's raking ball forward.West Brom continued to give away free kicks in dangerous areas, Yacob the main perpetrator, and, after Sturridge fizzed a viciously swerving effort wide, Suarez completed his treble.

Yacob finally earned a booking for fouling Sturridge on the left flank and Gerrard produced a sumptuous delivery for Suarez to leap and glance into the far top corner.Liverpool's attacks were unrelenting – Sturridge blazing over from Glen Johnson’s 58th-minute cross before driving at the beleaguered West Brom backline and planting a side-footed effort against the crossbar.

The visitors were handed an unlikely route back into the match in the 66th minute, Morrison crashing home a penalty after Cissokho caught full-back Billy Jones on a burst into the box.

Liverpool started to appear ragged but Sturridge calmed Anfield in the most emphatic manner and there was still time for Myhill to touch a Suarez overhead kick onto the bar.

Schalke 1-3 Borussia Dortmund: BVB take derby spoils

    332980hp2.jpg

Goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Nuri Sahin and Jakub Blaszczykowski ensured Borussia Dortmund took the Ruhr derby spoils in a 3-1 win over Schalke.

In a game delayed slightly by crowd disturbance, Dortmund atoned for double defeat to their fierce rivals last season and maintained pace with Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich at the Bundesliga summit.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang turned home in the 14th-minute after a typically energetic start from the visitors, who continued to dominate after taking the lead.

However, Schalke were gifted a chance for an equaliser against the run of play on the half-hour mark as Neven Subotic was penalised for a foul on Christian Fuchs in the penalty area.

Kevin-Prince Boateng stepped up from 12 yards, but was denied by Roman Weidenfeller - the Dortmund keeper's fourth penalty save from the last eight he has faced in Bundesliga games.

A stunning strike from Nuri Sahin doubled Dortmund's lead, but they were pegged back by teenage substitute Max Meyer's third goal of the season.

As Schalke pushed on for a winner though, Jakub Blaszczykowski netted on the break with 16 minutes remaining to seal Dortmund's win.

Jurgen Klopp made just one change to the side that beat Arsenal in the Champions League on Tuesday, replacing Blaszczykowski with Aubameyang, while former Dortmund loanee Boateng returned to Schalke's team in one of four changes.

The start of the game was delayed by 10 minutes as sections of the Dortmund support appeared to throw flares onto the pitch and towards nearby home fans.

Once the action did get under way, Dortmund exploded into life with Marco Reus thundering a volley at Timo Hildebrand, with the visitors intercepting Schalke's attempted build-up play high up the pitch.

And they were rewarded in the 14th minute as slick interplay from Kevin Grosskreutz and Henrikh Mkhitaryan gave Reus free space on the right and he cut back for Aubameyang to tap in.

Hildebrand had to be alert to save another Aubameyang effort soon after, but Schalke were handed a way back into the game as Subotic was adjudged to have fouled Fuchs in the box. However, Weidenfeller was on hand to spring to his right and keep Boateng's penalty out.

The save opened the game up, but Schalke were unable to equalise with Roman Neustadter spurning a good chance from Fuchs' corner late in the half.

And they were made to pay just five minutes after the break, Sahin receiving the ball 20 yards out and lashing an effort across Hildebrand.

Subotic denied Julian Draxler with a brave block, but they halved the deficit just after the hour mark as Meyer swept home, having been on the pitch less than a minute.

But Klopp will have been happy with a change of his own 10 minutes later, as Blaszczykowski latched onto Mkhitaryan's throughball to slot past Hildebrand and restore the two-goal cushion.

Weidenfeller was forced to tip away Draxler's fierce effort in the closing stages, but Dortmund comfortably held on to take the derby bragging rights.

Bayern Munich 3-2 Hertha Berlin: Pep's men edge five-goal thriller

    332977hp2.jpg

Mario Gotze scored his first Bundesliga goal for Bayern Munich as the reigning champions beat Hertha Berlin 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Adrian Lopez gave Hertha an early lead, but Mario Mandzukic scored four minutes after replacing the injured Arjen Robben and then put the Bundesliga leaders in front with another header early in the second half.

Mario Gotze had come on just before the Croatia striker when Toni Kroos also picked up an injury and the midfielder made the most of his chance by scoring a third Bayern goal at the Allianz Arena.

Hertha were dangerous going forward and Anis Ben-Hatira pulled a goal back, but Pep Guardiola's side were not to be denied as they maintained their 100 per cent home record this season.

The victory ensured the European champions are just one game away from equalling Hamburg's 30-year record of 36 Bundesliga games without defeat and they were also boosted by the return of Javi Martinez, who came off the bench to make his first apperance for two months following a knee injury.

Mandzukic and defender Diego Contento dropped to the bench as Thomas Muller and Jerome Boateng returned to the starting line-up after being rested and suspended respectively for the midweek Champions League win over Viktoria Plzen.

There were two changes to the visitors' starting line-up following their win over Borussia Monchengladbach, as midfielder Tolga Cigerci and defender Nico Schulz were handed starts by coach Jos Luhukay.

And Luhukay's charges stunned Bayern just three minutes in, when the unmarked Ramos rose to meet Per Ciljan Skjelbred's corner and planted a header into the bottom-right corner of Manuel Neuer's net.

Things almost went from bad to worse for the European champions five minutes later, as Ben-Hatira's deft lob bounced down off the crossbar with Neuer beaten.

Bayern were struggling to get going until Gotze and Mandzukic replaced Kroos and Robben.

The Croatia striker took just four minutes to make his presence felt as he rose at the back post to head home Franck Ribery's free-kick.

Hertha continued to threaten and it needed a great challenge from Bastian Schweinsteiger to get across and ensure Cigerci's shot deflected over the bar.

Schweinsteiger then showed his class at the other end, six minutes after the break, as he delivered an inviting free kick, which Mandzukic met with a downward header into the far corner from 10 yards.

Kraft should really have done better and was beaten again three minutes later. This time Gotze was in the right place to head Rafinha's cross into the far corner as the Hertha keeper scrambled across in vain.

But Hertha were not finished yet and they were back in it on 57 minutes when Ben-Hatira diverted Ramos's mis-hit shot into the roof of the net.

Ramos was a thorn in Bayern's side and his long-range strike was tipped over by Neuer. He then appealed for a penalty for a push by Alaba in stoppage-time, but the referee waved play on and Bayern held on for another win.

:love:Manchester United 3-2 Stoke: Champions rescued by Chicharito & Rooney

    javierhernandezceleb20131026_576x324.jpg

Chicharito completed Manchester United's late second-half comeback to earn a 3-2 victory over Stoke at Old Trafford.

The Premier League champions were once again out of sorts on their own turf and looked to be heading for defeat as a Peter Crouch effort and a sublime Marko Arnautovic free-kick sandwiched Robin van Persie's equaliser.

However, Wayne Rooney levelled the scores in the 78th minute before substitute Chicharito netted a dramatic winner two minutes later.

David Moyes' men looked to be heading for a third straight home match without victory in the Premier League, in another out-of-sorts performance at Old Trafford. Crouch toe-poked Stoke ahead before Van Persie fired home a rebound from Rooney's header.

Arnautovic's free-kick appeared to have handed Stoke the three points, but headers from Rooney and Hernandez in the closing stages ensured Stoke are still looking for their first Premier League victory over United.

Van Persie returned from a toe injury that kept him out United's 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad on Wednesday, while former United striker Mark Hughes brought in Crouch to lead Stoke's attack.

Stoke exploited United's recent home frailties right from the off and were rewarded with the opener in just the fourth minute. Erik Pieters burst through three challenges before crossing from the left and Crouch's initial shot was saved at point-blank range from David de Gea before Jonny Evans' attempted clearance rebounded off the striker and into the net.

Moyes' men were wasteful in possession and were nearly punished further when Crouch hit a first-time volley at full stretch that narrowly cleared the crossbar.Stoke came even closer when Jonathan Walters hit a half-volley from 12 yards and drew a smart save from De Gea.

The United faithful were becoming restless, but the home side gave them something to cheer about with an equaliser three minutes before the break. Rooney's back-post header was well saved by Asmir Begovic and Van Persie was on hand to fire in the rebound.

However, Stoke immediately restored their lead when Arnautovic curled a sublime free-kick from the left that hit the bar and bounced into the goal with De Gea scrambling to attempt to make the save.United upped the intensity after the break but only had blocked efforts from Rooney and Van Persie to show for their efforts.

Defensive confusion nearly led to Walters breaking clear in the 64th minute, but De Gea sprinted 40 yards off his line to make a vital interception.

Rooney restored parity in the 78th minute when he lost his marker to head home from Van Persie's corner. And the home fans were once again on their feet with 10 minutes remaining when good work from Patrice Evra on the left led to the Frenchman hanging up a cross and Chicharito adding the header from six yards.

The win is just United's second in the league this season, while Stoke's winless run in the top flight extended to six matches.
