Moyes: Manchester United weren’t close to buying Ozil, we didn’t need him

    320326_heroa.jpg

David Moyes says Manchester United did not try to sign Mesut Ozil in the summer because he was a player they "didn’t need”.

The Germany international moved from Real Madrid to Arsenal in August and has proved to be an instant success at the Emirates, helping the Gunners to the top of the Premier League table.

Ozil had also been linked with a move to the Red Devils prior to the deal going through, but Moyes insisted the club were never close to bringing him to Old Trafford.
“We weren’t close to buying him but something was mooted a little bit before that,” Moyes told reporters.

“We didn’t need that position at the time. I didn’t even say it was an interest, it was put to us and it was just something at the time we didn’t need.

“We had Shinji Kagawa and Wayne Rooney and people of a similar ilk so it wasn’t quite what we required at that time. We were looking at different positions.”

Moyes will face Ozil and Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday and the Scot is confident his side are facing the in-form Gunners at the right time, after an inconsistent start to the season.

“Arsenal are coming to play the champions, but I think their form is very good and they will come in good spirit,” he added.

“But we have some good momentum. Our performances are improving, there are signs we are coming into a bit of form, so hopefully it will make for a good game.”

Wolfsburg 2-1 Borussia Dortmund: Olic wonderstrike condemns Klopp's men to second consecutive defeat

    338845hp2.jpg

A stunning strike from Ivica Olic saw Wolfsburg beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 on Saturday and condemn Jurgen Klopp's side to a second consecutive defeat this week.

Free-kicks from Marco Reus and Ricardo Rodriguez either side of half-time saw the game finely poised at 1-1 before Olic sent a tremendous curled effort past Roman Weidenfeller to earn Wolfsburg all three points.

Reus struck another set-piece against the post late on, but the home side held on to secure their fourth straight league win.

The defeat for Dortmund is the team's second in the Bundesliga this season and follows up the 1-0 loss to Arsenal in midweek.

Wolfsburg made one change from the side that won at Eintracht Frankfurt last Saturday, with Daniel Caligiuri replacing the injured Diego.

Long-term absentee Bas Dost was named among the substitutes after recovering from an ankle injury.

The visitors were boosted by the return of defender Mats Hummels, who missed the Arsenal game with a thigh injury, while Jakub Blaszczykowski was ruled out with a gastrointestinal infection.

Dortmund coach Klopp had called for a reaction after Wednesday's Champions League setback, and he will have surely been pleased by his team's bright start to this game.

Hummels gave the hosts an early scare after five minutes when he found himself on the end of a whipped Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang cross from the right, but could not keep his header down.

Aubameyang was at the centre of things again four minutes later, breaking free of his marker inside the box before firing just wide.

Wolfsburg had chances of their own, though, and nearly took the lead just after 20 minutes through former Dortmund forward Ivan Perisic, who headed just wide.

Dieter Hecking's men began to take the game to Dortmund as the half wore on. First, Slobodan Medojevic volleyed wide before Patrick Ochs had a long-range effort tipped over the bar.

Neven Subotic was carried off on a stretcher just before the break after landing awkwardly, but Klopp's worries were soon eased when Reus stepped up to curl a 25-yard free-kick into the top corner of the net on the stroke of half-time.

The goal predictably boosted Dortmund's confidence, with Reus and Aubameyang both looking lively, the latter wasting a great opportunity 10 minutes into the second half.

Some great work from Henrikh Mkhitaryan saw the Armenian cut the ball back to the former Saint-Etienne striker, who scuffed his shot wide from 12 yards.

Dortmund were left to rue that miss just two minutes later when Rodriguez's teasing 35-yard free-kick from the right eluded everyone before bouncing past Weidenfeller.

Three minutes later things got worse for Klopp's side when Olic received the ball on the right flank before cutting inside and sending a vicious left-footed strike in off the post from just outside the box.

The goal shocked Dortmund, who came close to hauling themselves level 15 minutes from the end when Reus saw his free-kick come back off the post.

Wolfsburg's nerves were tested late on with Robert Lewandowski having several penalty appeals turned down, although the home side could have extended their lead at the death when Perisic raced away from the Dortmund defence before firing agonisingly wide.

The result leaves BVB four points behind Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga ahead of the sides' meeting following the international break.

    Hulk keen on Tottenham move

    331217_heroa.jpg

Zenit St Petersburg forward Hulk has confirmed his interest in joining Tottenham.

The Brazil international played under current Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas at Porto, where he scored 36 goals in 51 games en route to winning a domestic double and the Europa League.

Tottenham rejected the chance to take Hulk on a €12 million loan from Zenit this summer, but he is still hopeful of moving to White Hart Lane in the future.

"I learned a lot with Andre Villas-Boas at Porto," he told twentyfour7 magazine.

"He is very intelligent tactically. He was almost so well informed about the opponents that we pretty much knew everything about them when we went out on to the pitch. "It was scary how much we knew.

"I am really happy Villas-Boas is making a mark in England, and it would be fantastic to play under him again one day."

Manchester United need consistency in defence, admits Moyes

    330631_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager David Moyes admits he is yet to determine his first-choice central defensive partnership.

The Old Trafford club, who face table-topping Arsenal on Sunday, have internationals Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans to choose from in their back line.

And Moyes confesses that finding consistency in the centre of defence is proving a challenge as he tries to keep all five happy.

"You would like to have a bit of continuity but when you have five centre-backs like we have here in the squad they all need to be used," he told reporters.

"They all need to be played at different times and some of them have had injuries which have meant we have had to change.

"It would be better if we could get a bit more consistency to it but, at the moment, whoever we have brought in has done well."

However, Moyes does admit that being spoilt for choice at the back does have its advantages.

"I am pleased because if we can tighten up at the back, the quality of players we have got in the forward areas tend to make the difference," he added.

"So I am pleased that in the last couple of games we have looked a little more solid, and more likely not to concede so many goals."

:cool:Ronaldo: I do my talking on the pitch

    338814_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo says his hat-trick in the 5-1 win over Real Sociedad on Saturday is his response to Sepp Blatter's recent comments about him.

The Fifa president claimed that the Portuguese winger spends more time at the hairdresser than Lionel Messi when asked to pick a favourite between the duo.

Ronaldo retorted by hinting that Messi would get preferential treatment in the Ballon d'Or race but now says he wants to draw a line under the affair and insists he does not care about the award.

"I am showing it on the field - I don't want to talk any more. I am only thinking of helping the team and winning the game," he told Gol Television.

"I don't want to talk about the Ballon d'Or. The answer is given on the pitch. It's not up to me, so I don't care about it."

Ronaldo went on to say that he feels that he is beginning to bond well with Gareth Bale, whom the capital club signed for €100 million in the summer.

"I've got a very good understanding with Bale, he is being integrated and is playing very well. I feel good with him, Karim [Benzema] and [Angel] Di Maria," he continued.

"It was a very good game, in the first half we played very well. We scored early and that made it easier.

"I'm very happy with the goals, I've got a bit of a foot knock, but with a bit of sacrifice I can play."

Boateng delighted with goal for record-breaking Bayern

    338792_heroa.jpg

Jerome Boateng paid tribute to former boss Jupp Heynckes as Bayern Munich made Bundesliga history with a 3-0 win over Augsburg on Saturday.

The Germany international scored the opening goal of the before Franck Ribery and Thomas Muller sealed maximum points as the champions made it a record 37 games without defeat in the top flight.

While Boateng was thrilled to be on the scoresheet, he was quick to praise the entire team for their remarkable run, which begun under Jupp Heynckes last season.

"I am thrilled about the goal and that we have broken the record. Congratulations to all at FC Bayern, and to Jupp Heynckes from last season. It was a great game from the whole team. We can be happy," he was quoted as saying by the club's official website.

Augsburg boss Mark Weinzierl admitted his side's gameplan was ruined by Boateng's early goal and praised the Bavarians for their "incredible" style of play.

"Bayern are incredibly strong, we experienced this today, with the presence and security on the ball they have. It's incredible," he said.

"The early deficit confused our plans a little. We could have done better overall."

Chelsea deserved last-gasp penalty, insists Mourinho

    338873_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has defended Andre Marriner's decision to award Chelsea a controversial last-gasp penalty against West Brom at Stamford Bridge.

Marriner pointed to the spot in the 95th minute after Ramires went down following a collision with Steven Reid in the penalty area, despite replays showing minimal contact between the two men.

The result saved the home side's blushes and extended Mourinho's personal unbeaten record in home Premier League matches to 66 games - and the Special One was adamant the outcome was fair.

"Yes [we deserved to draw]," he told reporters. "In the first half West Brom didn’t cross the midfield line.

"We didn’t create a lot because they defended very very well but we were the only team that tried to score and tried to win in first half, so when the attitude to the game is this one there is always one team deserves more to win than another.

"In the second half we had more space with the 1-0, we had a couple of good situations. They scored a goal which is a funny one, and the second one is a big mistake by the referee [for the challenge by Sessegnon on Ivanovic]. The fourth official told me 'You’re right', but it is a big mistake.

"After that our reaction was fantastic. It was a reaction which could have ended the game 3-1 [to West Brom], but we created lots of chances and missed a chance with an open goal.

"We threw everything at them and the penalty comes at a moment which is difficult for the team that’s winning to accept. But a penalty is a penalty, minute one or minute 94, and this one was a penalty."

Mourinho also revealed his decision to start Cesar Azpilicueta over Ashley Cole at left-back was based on form rather than fitness, and hinted the Spaniard may continue in his new role.

"Because Azpilicueta is playing very well," he replied when asked why Cole was consigned to the bench. "He was [first choice] today. Let’s see what happens next week, but he played very well against Schalke and again in this game. He made zero mistakes.

"Of course when I’m losing and I have to play with three defenders, I prefer leave the three powerful guys in the air who can be a threat in attack and I sacrifice Azpi but he played two very good games."

When questioned over whether he harboured concerns over Cole's form, Mourinho replied: "No. I didn’t like his performance against Newcastle, I made the change against Schalke and the answer from Azpi was a good answer. I didn’t feel I had any reason to leave him out today."

Ancelotti awestruck by 'out of this world' Ronaldo

    338918_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti declared Cristiano Ronaldo "out of this world" after his 19th La Liga hat-trick in Real Madrid's 5-1 win over Real Sociedad.

The Portugal international gave Madrid a 12th-minute lead at Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday as he collected Karim Benzema's left-wing cross and fired into the far side of the goal.

Benzema and Ronaldo then reversed roles as the Frenchman doubled Madrid's lead, before the former Manchester United man scored a penalty and Sami Khedira netted the fourth.

Antoine Griezmann pulled one back for Sociedad, but Ronaldo rifled in a free kick 14 minutes from time to complete his third hat-trick of the season and his 19th in La Liga since moving to Spain in 2009, leaving Ancelotti in awe of his current form.

"Right now Cristiano is out of this world," the 54-year-old said."He is playing with incredible consistency and scores a lot of goals. It's difficult to find the words to describe him."

Ancelotti also praised the players who are finding themselves rotated most weeks, as he added: "A team has to play in a way to use all the characteristics of its players.

"Khedira has enough quality to play for Real Madrid. He is consistent and always helps the team.

"Xabi Alonso has a lot of experience and quality to help us play the way we want to play; I've said it many times.
