Casillas: Ronaldo is the best player in the world

    342729_heroa.jpg

Iker Casillas has claimed that Real Madrid colleague Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in the world.

Addressing an anti-bullying event on Tuesday, the Spain international lavished praise on the Portugal international, who has scored 17 goals in 14 Liga appearances for the Blancos this season.

“There’s one player who’s ahead of everyone else, who’s in amazing form and who deserves all the praise," the Madrid club captain enthused. "That player is Cristiano Ronaldo.

"I don’t think there’s any doubt about it and he shows it game after game. It’s good for Madrid because our hope is that, thanks to him, in a few months' time we’ll be achieving our goals for this year.”

Indeed, Casillas believes that Carlo Ancelotti's men have the potential to win the treble this season.

“We’re working for it," he explained. "We’re training for it, but we can’t go crazy. Because even though right now people are praising us, that can take the edge off.

"We need to keep going as we are right now and wait for the end of the season.

“This is a young, ambitious team. Hopefully, we’ll win the European Cup – we’ve been waiting for it for 11 years - another league and, why not, the Cup.”

The 32-year-old shot-stopper, who has been forced to play second fiddle to Diego Lopez in La Liga this season, also spoke about the criticism he is forced to deal with on website Twitter.

"On social networks people insult me a lot,” Casillas added. “There's a lot people who call you names behind an avatar, but then, in person, they’re cowards.

"If this happens, you should go to the police, who act to block accounts.”

:cool:Van Persie could face Everton, says Moyes

    339400_heroa.jpg

Manchester United boss David Moyes says that Robin van Persie "has a chance" of facing Everton on Wednesday night.

The Netherlands international has been struggling with toe and groin injuries in recent weeks and missed United's Champions League clash with Bayer Leverkusen and the 2-2 draw with Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

The champions now host Roberto Martinez's high-flying Toffees at Old Trafford and, when asked if Van Persie could return, Moyes told a pre-match press conference: "Robin's okay. He's got a chance."

United go into the game two points behind Everton, having drawn their last two Premier League games, and the Scot hopes to see his side return to winning ways.

"The job is to keep it going, keep winning and keep on a good run of form," he added.

"We've done that but, as I've repeated myself many times, we let in a late goal at Cardiff which turned what would have been a really good week into one that wasn't quite as good as we would have liked.

"But we still drew two games and won one last week. We'd like that to be a better ratio but nevertheless it's not a bad one either."

The match sees Moyes face his former side for the first time as United boss and he took time to praise Martinez's impact since suceeding him at Goodison Park.

"They have a new manager there and he's brought in his own players as well. Roberto Martinez has done a really good job," he observed.

"I had a great time at Everton - they were fabulous to me - but I'm manager of Manchester United now."

Hodgson tips Rooney to shine at World Cup

    328874_heroa.jpg

England boss Roy Hodgson is confident that striker Wayne Rooney can maintain his fine form until next summer's World Cup.

The 28-year-old Manchester United ace has scored 10 goals for the English champions so far this season, including a double last time out in a 2-2 draw with Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Rooney was a key figure for England in qualifying for the tournament, netting seven times as the Three Lions topped Group H, and Hodgson is backing him to continue his hot streak in Brazil.

"He's playing excellently at the moment," the national boss told the FA's official website. "He really is playing so well and I've got no reason to believe why that shouldn't continue week after week, match after match, all the way up until the World Cup.

"I think all players need that devil in them. The main thing about being a professional footballer - and we're talking about top-level Premier League level - you have to accept that you need that devil, that fight, in you every single week.

"There are days where you don't quite feel like it but the whole point about being a top player is, whether you feel like it or not, you go out and do it – and he does that."

Hodgson feels that having Rooney in peak condition at the World Cup would be a huge boost to the entire squad.

"I'm very fortunate that there are senior players, of which he is one, that do have a big influence and their thoughts on things and the way they approach things does have an effect on the rest of the group," he added.

"A Wayne Rooney in this sort of form would be a very positive impact on the squad.

"What you desperately hope is that players get through the season - they come as rested as they can possibly be - and it will our job to try and keep the atmosphere right. To try and keep it where everybody is singing off the same hymn sheet."

Silva fitness boost for Manchester City

    338483_heroa.jpg

Manchester City playmaker David Silva has been given the green light to return to first-team training after a month out with injury, Goal can reveal.

The Spain international limped out of City’s 5-2 demolition of CSKA Moscow a month ago and has missed his side’s last four matches.

Silva has been back in light training for a fortnight but has now been allowed to step-up his rehabilitation and return to full sessions.

The 27-year-old is likely to return to the substitutes’ bench against Bayern Munich in the Champions League next week. Should he come through unscathed he could well be in contention to be selected against Premier League leaders Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

In Silva’s absence City have continued their free-scoring form on their own patch, with 13 goals in three games against Swansea, Tottenham and Vikoria Plzen.

City currently trail Arsenal by six points ahead of Wednesday’s trip to the Hawthorns where they could welcome back skipper Vincent Kompany who has been out since October with a groin injury.

Januzaj reminds me of Ozil, says Berg

    330021_heroa.jpg

Former Manchester United defender Henning Berg has tipped Adnan Januzaj to develop into a world-class player and believes his qualities are similar to those of Mesut Ozil.

Januzaj has burst onto the first-team scene at Old Trafford with some impressive showings at the start of the 2013-14 campaign, including a match-winning performance away at Sunderland that saw him score both goals in a 2-1 victory.

And Berg, who won two Premier League titles with the Red Devils during his three years as a player at the club, has seen enough to convince him that the 18-year-old has the potential to be a global star.

He told the club's official website: "David Moyes said he lacks one or two world-class players for the team to be top in Europe but I think he has one extra world-class player coming through the ranks.

"He reminds me of Mesut Ozil in terms of temperament, awareness and understanding. I said that when I first saw him.

"He just needs to be handled the right way and I’m 100 per cent sure that the manager will know how to do it and, if not, they can always ask Sir Alex.

"People should not take these things for granted because you don’t see players like this come through very often, so supporters and fans should appreciate seeing a kid like that playing with the big players because that is something special.

"But we should not expect him to do it every game. Maybe the last one he played, at Cardiff, you could see that things won’t be 100 per cent every time but from what he has done so far, he has been fantastic."

Januzaj, meanwhile, has been named as one of the individuals shortlisted for the BBC's Young Sports Personality of the Year award.

Wenger denies Arsenal interest in Morata and Pato

    331012_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has denied speculation linking the club with January moves for Real Madrid sensation Alvaro Morata and Corinthians star Alexandre Pato.

Recent reports suggested the Gunners had made a bid of €8 million for the Brazilian striker and also approached los Blancos over the possibility of a loan deal for the Spain Under-21 starlet.

Morata has found first-team opportunities hard to come by at Real Madrid this season, while Pato's career has stalled since ending an injury-plagued spell with Milan to return to Brazil.

Arsene Wenger has made no secret of his desire to sign another striker to ease the burden on Olivier Giroud, but moved to quell the speculation ahead of Wednesday's Premier League clash with Hull City.

When asked whether he had enquired about the availability of Morata, Wenger replied: "There is no truth in that, that is all I can say. I have not been in touch with them."

Arsenal currently sit top of the Premier League, four points ahead of Jose Mourinho's Chelsea.

Manchester United must win next two games, admits Smalling

    339314_heroa.jpg

Chris Smalling insists Manchester United cannot afford to keep drawing matches if they want to remain in the title race.

David Moyes’ side are unbeaten in the Premier League since their loss at home to West Brom on September 28 but four wins and three draws since have left the champions nine points behind leaders Arsenal.

United host Everton at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening before welcoming Newcastle United on Saturday and Smalling has urged his side to secure six points from the two matches.

"We have two games at home and we have to make sure we don't drop any more points," Smalling is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.

"In the last two games we have dropped four points so it's not great. But we have two home games and it is now imperative we take six points from those. We have to.

"We are starting play in good spells in games but we need to finish teams off.

"We don't want to see Arsenal get too far ahead, but we can only focus on ourselves and we need to start picking up maximum points. It's good to be unbeaten but we can't afford too many more draws."

Smalling also praised the form of Wayne Rooney, whose double secured a 2-2 draw for United against Tottenham on Sunday.

"Wayne is our talisman out there, he's running the show at the moment," said Smalling.

"Whether it's assists or goals, he's at the heart of it all. He's really doing well at the minute.

"Ever since I've been at the club he's always been running and creating stuff. Maybe people are picking up on it a bit more now, but he has been doing it throughout his career."
