:angry::angry::angry:Man Utd can't sign anyone in January - Moyes

    354867_heroa.jpg

David Moyes says Manchester United are unable to sign their main targets in January and says, therefore, they are unlikely to buy anyone.

The Premier League champions currently sit seventh in the table, 11 points behind leaders Arsenal, and have crashed out of the FA Cup third round following Sunday's 2-1 defeat at home to Swansea City.

Moyes had previously urged caution ahead of the window and has reiterated that the club are unlikely to sign their priority targets this month.

“I said that I would try to but it would probably be doubtful in January,” the United manager told reporters. "There’s an urgency that we would like to bring people in but are those players available in January?

“The players we would like to bring in probably aren’t available in January.

“It’s not because we wouldn’t like to do it, it’s because they aren’t available.”

United went behind via Wayne Routledge’s early opener but pulled level through Javier Hernandez.

With the score level in the second half, Fabio, four minutes after coming on as a substitute, was sent off for a challenge on Jose Canas, while Wilfried Bony’s header fired Michael Laudrup’s side into the fourth round.

Moyes admits referee Mike Dean made the correct decision with Fabio’s dismissal but claims his side put in a performance worthy of securing a replay.

“I thought we played well enough,” said the Scot. “I didn’t think we deserved to lose but we did. We put out a really strong team today with lots of international players.

“We should have taken more chances when the opportunities were there.

“We’re just lacking a bit of courage when we get in to the final third at times.

“We need to get back to winning ways. We have to make sure we find a solution to win. It doesn’t matter what style, we have to find a way of winning.

“It’s been a tough start, a tough period. I’m disappointed not to win more games and play better but I’m sure it will change.”

Real Madrid 3-0 Celta: Ronaldo double sees Blancos' year start with a bang

    356781hp2.jpg

A second-half double from Cristiano Ronaldo helped Real Madrid kick off the new year with a 3-0 win at home to Celta.

Leading duo Barcelona and Atletico Madrid began 2014 with wins at the weekend and, while the Blancos were not at their fluent best, they kept within five points of both ahead of the champions' trip to the Vicente Calderon on Saturday.

Following a fairly even opening hour, Karim Benzema was on hand to register the opener, applying a finish to substitute Jese's cross after 67 minutes to settle Real's nerves, before Ronaldo's late double wrapped up the points.

Carlo Ancelotti recalled defender Pepe to his starting XI following a suspension, while Gareth Bale was named on the bench after he missed the trip to Valencia prior to the mid-season break with a calf injury.

Celta had won just once in their last five league matches going into the game and former Madrid midfielder Luis Enrique opted for a change up front as Charles replaced Santi Mina.

Despite their poor form, the visitors should have taken the lead after five minutes when Charles' effort found the side netting when clean through on goal.

The hosts quickly began to dominate possession but struggled to fashion chances until Luka Modric fizzed a long-range effort just over Yoel's crossbar.

Benzema then saw an effort deflected wide from inside the area after 26 minutes as Ancelotti's men were frustrated by a stubborn Celta back-line.

The visitors threatened regularly on the counter, however, with Rafinha's shot deflected over the bar by Pepe when he perhaps should have squared it wide to the unmarked Fabian Orellano before the break.

Isco did well to fashion an effort after a superb turn away from Gustavo Cabral but his tame shot was easily saved by Yoel before Jese saw his tame strike easily saved after on the hour.

Bale was introduced to boost the hosts' attacking threat after 64 minutes but it was Jese who again impressed for Ancelotti's men.

Having scored the winner against Valencia before the winter break, he produced a jinking piece of skill in the area before crossing for Benzema to stab home.

Only Barcelona can better Celta's win record as an away side at the Santiago Bernabeu in the last 10 years, but Ronaldo's close-range finish was enough to put any chance of an upset to bed.

Bale then cut the ball back for Ronaldo to register his 20th Liga goal of the season in injury-time as Celta, who failed to score away in the top flight for a second game running, dropped into the relegation zone.

Lazio 1-0 Inter: Klose gives Reja joyous Rome return

    356766hp2.jpg

Miroslav Klose scored late to give returning Lazio boss Edy Reja was given an joyous return to Stadio Olimpico hotseat in Monday's 1-0 win over Inter.

The 68-year-old was confirmed as the successor to Vladimir Petkovic on Saturday and his return for a second spell in charge prompted a response from underachieving Lazio, with Klose's superb half-volley lighting up a largely uninspiring affair in Rome.

The Biancocelesti had the better of the first-half exchanges and Senad Lulic came closest with a lofted half-volley following confusion between Jonathan and goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.

Inter showed a marked improvement after the break, but rarely threatened the Lazio goal and were punished when Klose met Antonio Candreva's right-wing cross with a sweetly struck volley in the 81st minute.

While the result represented a blow to Inter, they were boosted by the return of Diego Milito - who has been absent for the best part of a year with knee and thigh injuries.

Milito came on as a substitute for Fredy Guarin but was unable to prevent a defeat that leaves his side sixth, four places above Lazio.

Etrit Berisha made his Serie A debut in goal for Lazio as regular number one Federico Marchetti was unavailable with a muscular problem. Ricardo Alvarez returned from a one-match suspension for the Nerazzurri.

Lazio looked more settled in the opening stages and Senad Lulic almost capitalised on confusion in the Inter box by lofting an effort just wide of the far post on 10 minutes.

The hosts were dealt a blow soon after when full-back Abdoulay Konko was carried off on a stretcher and replaced by Luis Cavanda.

Inter enjoyed plenty of possession but struggled to break through a resolute Lazio defence, with an Alvarez free kick that curled wide the visitors' best effort.

Hernanes will feel he could have done better for Lazio on the half-hour mark when he scuffed an effort wide from Lulic's knock-down.

Lazio applied more pressure at the end of the half and Cavanda stung the palms of Handanovic with a drive from the edge of the box.

Things remained tight in the second half, but it took a superb sliding challenge from Giuseppe Biava to deny Rodrigo Palacio when the forward looked to be through one-on-one with Berisha.

Inter continued to control the tempo and saw a fine chance go begging after 62 minutes. Jonathan burst down the right-hand side and crossed to the far post where Yuto Nagatomo headed straight at Berisha.

With 20 minutes remaining Lazio almost stole ahead against the run of play when Cavanda's centre narrowly evaded the head of Klose. The Germany international made no mistake with nine minutes remaining, though, calmly guiding Candreva's inviting cross beyond Handanovic to delight the home faithful.

Klose could have had a second in injury-time, but Juan got back to make a fine, last-ditch tackle.

AC Milan 3-0 Atalanta: Kaka double eases pressure on hosts

    356676hp2.jpg

A double from Kaka helped get AC Milan back to winning ways in Serie A as they kicked off 2014 with a comfortable victory over Atalanta on Monday.

The Brazil international became the 10th Milan player to reach a century of goals for the club when he found the net with a composed finish 10 minutes before the break.

Milan were relieved to see Atalanta's Yohan Benalouane, who started instead of Cristiano Del Grosso, have a goal disallowed for a push shortly after half-time - and they duly took full advantage.

Kaka, wearing the captain's armband in the absence of injured skipper Riccardo Montolivo, netted his 101st goal for Milan in the 65th minute with a close-range finish, and teenager Bryan Cristante then capped his first league start with the third two minutes later.

Victory, which is only Milan's fifth in Serie A this season, sees them move onto 22 points, four clear of Atalanta.

Allegri made six changes to the side beaten by rivals Inter before the mid-season break, including Alessandro Matri coming in for Mario Balotelli - who was deemed fit enough only for the bench due to flu - and 18-year-old Cristante starting in place of the suspended Sulley Muntari.

Milan started brightly and created a great chance for Cristante in the opening stages, but his first-time effort crashed against the bar with Andrea Consigli well beaten.

The visiting goalkeeper was left with no chance again in the 35th minute - and this time, the woodwork did not save him as Milan took the lead courtesy of Kaka’s milestone goal.

Urby Emanuelson broke out of defence before playing the Brazilian in behind the Atalanta defence, and the 31-year-old calmly slid the ball beyond Consigli.

The visitors started the second half positively and thought they had levelled in 52nd minute through Benalouane, but the midfielder was adjudged to have fouled Philippe Mexes in the build-up.

Christian Abbiati had to be alert again three minutes later as he made a fantastic reaction save with his legs to deny German Denis after a Maximiliano Moralez cross.

After withstanding intense pressure from Atalanta, Milan doubled their lead just after the hour as Kaka grabbed his second of the game.

Balotelli, on in place of Matri, fired a cross in from the right, and the ball fell perfectly for the former Real Madrid man after striking Robinho, and he swept home from four yards.

Cristante added the third with his first Milan goal soon after, as the youngster fired low across Consigli into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Allegri's side pushed for further goals, but although Balotelli and Kaka went close, they were unable to find a fourth.

Kaka scores 100th AC Milan goal against Atalanta

    356657_heroa.jpg

Kaka’s double against Atalanta at San Siro saw his AC Milan record move past 100 goals.

The Brazilian sealed his century of strikes by scoring in the 35th minute to give Massimiliano Allegri’s side the lead in their Serie A clash.

Urby Emanuelson led a Milan counter-attack with a surging run and played in Kaka, who netted a composed finish past goalkeeper Andrea Consigli.

To acknowledge reaching the landmark, Kaka celebrated the goal by holding up a Milan strip with ‘Kaka 100’ to the home supporters.

The captain on the day went on to score a second goal of the afternoon in the 65th minute to move onto 101 goals, pouncing on a loose ball to smash home from just outside the six-yard box.

Kaka’s strikes were the fifth and sixth times he has scored in his second spell at the club. The 31-year-old’s previous 95 Milan goals came during his initial stint at San Siro between 2003 and 2009.

His most productive season came in the 2007-08 campaign where he netted 19 goals from 41 games. He also scored 19 in 2005-06, but that was from 49 appearances.

The former Real Madrid star’s other four goals from this season have come against Catania, Genoa, Lazio and Celtic.

Milan went on to beat Atalanta 3-0, securing their first victory in five matches.

Napoli 2-0 Sampdoria: Mertens double seals points for Partenopei

    356611hp2.jpg

Napoli moved to within two points of Roma after two second-half goals from Dries Mertens secured a 2-0 win over Sampdoria on Monday.

The Belgian attacker swept home from close range after being set up by Higuain before firing home a deflected free kick later in the second half.

Sampdoria battled well for stages and will rue efforts from Manolo Gabbiadini and Nicola Pozzi which somehow failed to cross the line after smashing against the woodwork, but ultimately the Partenopei were able to seal a valuable win on their return from the winter break.

Raffael earned a start in goal with Pepe Reina unavailable, while Dries Mertens was named in attack as Marek Hamsik continues his recovery from injury for Napoli.

In a lively start, Mertens called Angelo Da Costa into action as he cut inside and fired at the near post, before Higuain wasted the best of the early chances as he volleyed straight at the keeper from point-blank range after Anthony Reveillere's cross.

Nenad Krsticic then combined well with Eder to tap home but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside, before Higuain turned inside the area and fired across goal, with Mertens inches from connecting on the slide.

Napoli continued to press hard, Mertens and Higuain both scuffing shots wide before Jose Callejon turned inside Lorenzo De Silverstri only to place his effort over the bar.

Eder then volleyed high and wide on the turn before Insigne just failed to convert Higuain's cross as the match rather fizzled out heading into the half-time break.

Sampdoria started the half brightly, with Eder twice calling Raffael into action, but Napoli broke the deadlock soon after. Callejon slid the ball through to Higuain, who cut back into the path of Mertens to sweep home in style.

Gabbiadini came within inches of levelling after rifling a shot off the crossbar, but the home side doubled their advantage just after the hour mark. Mertens, often guilty of poor set-piece delivery during the match, fired a free kick from 25 yards which took a slight touch off the wall to evade Da Costa and find the net.

Insigne then wasted a great chance as he fired over when free inside the area, before Mertens headed wide from a corner.

Substitute Pozzi then contrived to hit both posts with a curling left-footed shot before Insigne shot just wide late on as Napoli narrowed the gap to Roma in relatively comfortable fashion.

Ter Stegen set for Barcelona after rejecting Gladbach offer

    356672_heroa.jpg

Borussia Monchengladbach have announced that goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen will leave the club after rejecting a new contract.

The 21-year-old has been widely linked with a move away from the Bundesliga outfit, with Barcelona's vice-president Josep Bartomeu admitting their interest in the shot-stopper in November as they seek a replacement for the outgoing Victor Valdes.

Ter Stegen has a contract at Borussia Park until 2015, but the club have announced that attempts to tie him down by agreeing a new deal have been rejected.Sporting director Max Eberl said: "Ter Stegen will leave Borussia. Marc has informed us that will not accept our offer of a new contract.

"Marc's decision not to renew does not surprise us. I assume he'll join the club he has been linked to."Ter Stegen has kept six clean sheets for Gladbach this season, helping them climb to third in the Bundesliga.

And he insists he is still committed to the club despite rejecting the new deal.
"I do not want to comment on the state of play. And I do not want to talk about the 'Why" and the reasons I had in public," he told reports after training on Monday.

"I thought about this for a long time. I always said I would decide during the winter break and that is what I did. I will continue to play full throttle for this club."

Montpellier expecting Newcastle bid for Cabella

    356699_heroa.jpg

Montpellier's deputy president Laurent Nicollin has revealed he expects Newcastle to bid for Remy Cabella.

Cabella has been heavily linked with a move away from the Stade de la Mosson, with both Newcastle and Manchester United said to be interested in his services.
Newcastle look set to be the first to make an approach for the France international as Alan Pardew looks to bolster his options, but Nicollin insists that the relegation-threatened Ligue 1 side are keen to hang on to the 23-year-old until the end of the season.

"Manchester United have not sent any proposal," Nicollin told Midi Libre.
"As for Newcastle, it seems to me they are about to make one, but I expect confirmation on that. But the idea is still that Remy is with Montpellier until June."

Cabella has made 19 appearances for Montpellier this term, scoring six goals, but his performances have struggled to lift Rolland Courbis' side, who sit only three points above the drop zone in 17th ahead of Friday's visit of Monaco.

:(Walcott ruled out for six months with knee injury

    article-2534789-1A6E2B0000000578-647_634x431.jpg

Arsenal midfielder Theo Walcott has been ruled out for at least six months with a knee injury, the club have confirmed.
Walcott was stretchered off during the club's 2-0 win over Tottenham in the FA Cup third round on Saturday and scans have revealed he has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.

The 24-year-old will undergo surgery to rectify the problem, which will sideline him for the remainder of the Premier League season and the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

Walcott courted controversy during Saturday's match as he gestured the scoreline to the Tottenham fans while being stretchered off.

The Football Association confirmed on Monday that the winger would face no disciplinary action for the gesture, but now injury has brought a premature end to his campaign.

Walcott has made 21 appearances for Arsenal and England this season, scoring seven goals.

Pulis: Zaha not keen on Crystal Palace return

    356918_heroa.jpg

Manchester United winger Wilfried Zaha does not want to return to Crystal Palace on loan, according to Eagles boss Tony Pulis.

Zaha – who joined the Premier League champions from Palace last January for a reported £10 million fee, rising to £15 million with add-ons – was initially loaned back to Selhurst Park until the end of last term.

And with the 21-year-old having made just two Premier League appearances for United this season, a loan switch back to Palace has been mooted. But while Zaha appears set for a temproary move, it will not be to Palace, with Pulis confirming that the player is not interested in returning to London.

"We've spoken to [United boss] David Moyes about Zaha and I don't think he's too keen on him coming back to London," Pulis told talkSPORT."It's not a problem for us, he's a Manchester United player."We don't think it's a goer, although we were very keen if there was a possibility to take him on."

Pulis remains confident that he will still be able to bring in other attacking reinforcements during the January transfer window as he looks to bolster his squad."There are irons in other fires and we're working hard to bring other players in," he added.

"It's what we need to do. I said when I came here that this window was important.
"If we can have a good window, that gives us a better opportunity of staying up."

Thiago one of the best in the world, claims Rafinha

    350732_heroa.jpg

Barcelona youngster Rafinha Alcantara, currently on loan at Celta de Vigo, believes that his brother Thiago has become one of the best players in the world.

Thiago joined Bayern from Barcelona ahead of the 2013-14 campaign and has developed into an important first-team member after his early months at the club were blighted by injury.

"Thiago is doing very well at Bayern. He is an excellent player and he's one of the best in the world for me," Rafinha told Goal.

"He has been showing that he has a lot of talent. He has improved a lot from a tactical point of view as well.

"You can see that he is brimming with confidence working under Pep Guardiola and I hope that he can keep this up."

Thiago, 22, has a contract with Bayern until the summer of 2017.

    Milito hints at anti-Inter conspiracy

    328001_heroa.jpg

Diego Milito feels Inter are being treated unfairly by referees in the wake of the Nerazzurri's 1-0 Serie A loss to Lazio on Monday.

Head coach Walter Mazzarri previously voiced his frustration with the performance of officials in Monday's encounter shortly after the final whistle and Milito has now moved to question the agenda of those in charge.

"How are we to interpret the refereeing decisions that are going against us? It's really hard. We keep saying the same things," Milito told Inter Channel.

"They haven't given us a penalty yet and I don't think that's normal.

"There was that foul on Rolando, [Fredy] Guarin's burst forward that might have changed the game – episodes like that are penalising us at the moment."

Milito returned to match action against Lazio after a lengthy spell on the sidelines and he was pleased to be back.

"I couldn’t wait to get back on the pitch after so many months out - it felt great."

The 34-year-old has made just four Serie A appearances so far this term due to physical problems, scoring twice in the process, having missed the second half of last season with an Achillees injury.

Mandzukic must accept Lewandowski competition, says Sammer

    342326_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich sporting director Matthias Sammer has told Mario Mandzukic he must accept the competition brought about by the signing of Robert Lewandowski from Borussia Dortmund.

The Bavarians announced the signing of the Poland international on a five-year-deal upon the expiration of his contract at the end of this season.

Many have claimed that the Bavarians do not need the striker as they already have plenty of high-profile options in attack, yet Sammer has stressed that it's vital for Bayern to always prepare for the future.

"Mario remains a key player for us. However, he has to accept - like the rest of the squad - that there will always be stiff competition for places," Sammer was quoted as saying by Bild.

"Bayern cannot afford to get complacent and sit back, relax and be satisfied with our current squad.

"We cannot just wait until things eventually fall apart and then be forced to panic-buy.

"Our transfer policy is stable and sustainable. Why would it be a bad thing if we sign players from other Bundesliga clubs? People could also show us some respect and acknowledge that we are doing our job."

Lewandowski, 25, has signed a contract until the summer of 2019 with Bayern and will join his new club on a free transfer at the end of the 2013-14 campaign.
