Mourinho blames 'lack of personality' for Chelsea's draw at West Brom

    366014_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has blamed Chelsea's 1-1 draw with West Brom on a "lack of personality" from his players.

The Blues went ahead in the first half thanks to Branislav Ivanovic, but succumbed to a late equaliser from Victor Anichebe which denied them a four-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

And Mourinho says his team as a whole were to blame for dropping too deep and letting the Baggies back into the match.

"The attacking players stopped playing and they gave the chance to the opponents to feel more comfortable and to feel no fear and to push up," he told reporters.

"At the same time my defensive line started to play too deep, too [far] back, we gave them the ball and we were just waiting for them to put the ball into the box and to try to fight against it, but that is not our game.

"It is not the way we feel comfortable, so I think maybe also there is a little bit a lack of personality, because we must have the personality to get out and not accept their pressure and not accept to play for so long in our third. The game could perfectly have been 1-0 but I think their goal gives some truth to their performance.

"For 60 minutes, there was only one team, and that team couldn't kill the game, especially in the first 15 minutes of the second half.

"For 10 minutes the game was quiet, and for the last 15 minutes only one team, and that team fought a lot to get the goal and the point, and in the end I think they deserve it.

"We accepted for too long their dominance in the last 20 minutes, we made a couple of defensive mistakes and we were punished. At the end of the day it is one point, it is one more point than yesterday."

West Brom manager Pepe Mel, who is still searching for his first win with the Baggies since replacing Steve Clarke in early January, thinks his side had the chance to beat Mourinho's men.

"If West Brom scored a goal before [we did], for me we could win the match," he said.

"I am proud with my players. For me, it is good to have different halves."In the first half there was good defence – only two chances for Chelsea. And in the second half there was good transition between attack and defence, good counterattack and good mentality."

The point edges West Brom above Sunderland and out of the relegation zone on goal difference, and Mel hailed a marked improvement from Saturday's 3-1 loss at Crystal Palace."The players and I need a win but this draw against Chelsea, for us, is good because Chelsea is a big team," he added.

"I think the last match, for us, was very, very bad. We needed to work on focus for this match and they next match [against Fulham] is very important too."

Neymar not being primed for City clash, says Martino

    350953_heroa.jpg

Gerardo Martino says Neymar is not being primed for Barcelona's Champions League last-16 tie with Manchester City.

The Brazilian has been sidelined since spraining his ankle at Getafe in the Copa del Rey last month, but is back in training and has been named in the squad to face Real Sociedad in the Catalans' cup semi-final second leg at Anoeta on Wednesday night.

But Barca boss Martino claims there will be no risks taken with the club's summer signing.

"He took part in his second training session with the team, he felt no pain and physically he's looking good," Tata told reporters on Tuesday.

"We'll see about tomorrow and against Rayo [on Saturday]. And although it's a very important match, for me the Manchester City game will not determine Neymar's progress - it's about taking the smallest possible risk for the footballer."

Barca travel to City in the first leg of the sides' last-16 tie next Tuesday, before the two teams meet again at Camp Nou on March 12.

"We are playing a lot of minutes without really being consistent and that could be a problem against more complicated rivals," Martino said in relation to the City clash.

First priority for Barca, however, is to reach the Copa del Rey final, and they take a 2-0 lead to Anoeta for the second-leg match on Wednesday.

"The result [from the first leg] allows Real Sociedad the opportunity to come back," Martino said. "It's wide open, so we'll have to make sure we take control of the game early on, keep the ball and calm our rival."

Dortmund did well for 70 minutes - Klopp

    368045_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp believes that Borussia Dortmund played well for 70 minutes of the 90 in their 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday.

BVB dominated the majority of the first half and finished with aplomb in the DFB-Pokal quarter-final at the Commerzbank Arena, although the hosts threatened to take the lead early in the second half.

Klopp admits that his side were outclassed after half-time but was thrilled with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's headed goal from a Henrik Mkhitaryan corner after 83 minutes, vindicating their recent set-piece practise.

"The first half was clearly ours and we played really well for 70 minutes," he told reporters. "Unfortunately, in the first 20 minutes after the break, we had our rhythm broken and no clear way to win the game.

"After that there were many interruptions to play that helped return the momentum back our way. Frankfurt also did very well themselves and had some opportunities.

"We have trained a lot for set pieces, now it has worked out for us two games in a row. This is very important. We really wanted to be in the DFB-Pokal semi-finals, and it's something I think my team can win."

Dortmund face Frankfurt again on Saturday, this time in the Bundesliga and at Signal Iduna Park.

Copa del Rey least important to Madrid, says Ancelotti

    366109_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti says it was crucial that Real Madrid qualified for the Copa del Rey final at Atletico Madrid's expense despite insisting it is the least important trophy his side are chasing this season.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice - though was hit on the head by a lighter mid-match - in the 2-0 win at the Vicente Calderon on Tuesday to give the Blancos a 5-0 aggregate victory in the semi-final and avenge last campaign's defeat at the last hurdle.

Ancelotti, whose side will face either Barcelona or Real Sociedad in the final later this season, accepted that he might have bigger fish to fry in 2013-14 and confirmed Ronaldo did not suffer an injury in Atletico's defeat.

"I think the cup is important here because the teams give importance to this competition," the Italian told reporters after the match. "In England it may be more important, though.

"We want to win all competitions. It is true that this is the least important competition for us - we have the Champions League and La Liga - but a final is always a great thing for the team."

When asked how Ronaldo is coping after his blow to the head, the coach said: "Ronaldo is fine. He scored two goals and was important early in the game. He's fine, there's no injury problem."

Diego Simeone's men went out with a whimper, making it three defeats on the trot for Atletico after the high of topping La Liga at the start of February.

He was disappointed with the cup elimination but heartened somewhat by their performance.

"After losing, one is never happy," the Argentine coach said. "This group of players are that way, it's normal.

"We wanted to get to win the cup again, but it's just the semi-finals this year. We can always can do better but I think today was not bad.

"We played and competed how we wanted to, which was to compete with Real Madrid well."

Julio Cesar to leave QPR for Toronto FC, claims Brazil coach Scolari

    269290_heroa.jpg

QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar is on the verge of joining MLS side Toronto FC, according to Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.

The Brazil No.1 joined the Rs in the summer of 2012, but has featured just once - in an FA Cup defeat to Everton - following relegation to the Championship, with manager Harry Redknapp preferring Robert Green.

Cesar has been selected for the March friendly against South Africa, and is set to gain some valuable playing time in MLS ahead of the 2014 World Cup on home soil.

"Julio is in our group [for the South Africa game], he should be officially introduced to his new club," Scolari told reporters. "Toronto should be finalising the last few details and he should be in great condition. There will be no problem with him.

"Lots of players arrive in the United States thinking it will be easy and then end up not playing. They stay for four or five months and then leave.

"We wish he were playing and now he will be. The MLS is not the end of [a] career."

Brazil technical coordinator Carlos Alberto Parreira added: "The MLS is technically not one of the best in the world, but it is very competitive. It was really important for us that he played.

"Julio played the last match for us and he hadn't been playing. He was really well, playing well, his reflexes were all perfect.

"If he plays 10, 15 matches until the World Cup it will be great. And he has that quality of still being the same player despite not being active."

Toronto recently announced the signing of Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe, who will join the club at the end of February.

Rodgers patient over Liverpool contract talks

    368448_heroa.jpg

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is remaining patient despite senior club officials staying quiet regarding a possible contract extension.

Liverpool are fourth in the Premier League after 25 matches this term, six points behind leaders Chelsea, as they continue to improve under the Northern Irishman's tenure.

Rodgers has just under 17 months left on his current deal and so far he has heard nothing from the club's owners regarding a potential prolonged spell in charge.

"[I have heard] nothing whatsoever. I have, after this year, one more year to go," he told reporters.

"I have always said when I came I am very happy here and we're just over halfway through that contract and it is not something that comes into my thinking.

"If I never get offered one I would give my life to the last day of that contract. In the meantime, until anyone says otherwise or wants to reward the staff or myself for our work, then we keep working as normal and see where it takes us.

"The option is for the club for the fourth year, but in all fairness there is a point next year where the club has to let me know whether they want to keep me on or not.

"I have regular contact with the owners and it is never mentioned. I talk more about players. My ambition is more for the club so I want the players tied up so we can keep the best players here and get players in.

"The club knows my feelings in that I love it here and I've started out on something I would want to hopefully – if I can progress and be good and everyone is happy – stay here and continue.

"If it's not to be for the owners and they want a different direction at the end of it, I will have done my best."

Rodgers highlighted the progress of Jordan Henderson, wh has become a key part of Liverpool's midfield after initially struggling, and reiterated he could be in line for a new contract of his own in due course.

"The way he is working, we would want to secure his services," Rodgers added. "He still has all his best years ahead of him and you can see his growth and development.

"He will want to get better and I'm sure it is in the interests of the club to tie him down. Jordan, tactically, is improving so much, and [Steven Gerrard] is in the zone just behind."

Cazorla: Giroud as good as Suarez and Rooney

    360482_heroa.jpg

Santi Cazorla has hailed the abilities of Arsenal team-mate Olivier Giroud, insisting he is as good as Luis Suarez and Wayne Rooney.

The France international started the season in blistering form, notching four goals in his first five games, but his return has dipped lately with just four goals in his last 13 outings.

However, Cazorla has faith in Giroud and puts him on par with the Liverpool and Manchester United strikers.

When asked by RMC how Giroud compares to Suarez and Rooney, Cazola replied: "For me, he is [at] the same level as the other strikers in the league.

"He is sturdy and can keep the ball. On the surface, he is effective, either with his feet or head. He is a little different from what is done in England, but he offers a lot.

"He is a great striker and has showed it all season, for Arsenal and France. He has improved to a high level and is getting better every year."

Cazorla joined Arsenal in 2012, quickly becoming a key part of Arsene Wenger's side, and he says he is delighted with his choice despite a failed move to Real Madrid earlier in his career.

He continued: "Both clubs [Barcelona and Real Madrid] are monuments of Spanish football. All players are dreaming about it. I had contact with Madrid a few years ago but a move could not be completed.

"On several occasions, it is fate that I have not been able to join one of these two clubs. But my career has developed well and I have no regrets."

Lukaku desperate for Champions League football

    361689_heroa.jpg

Romelu Lukaku has revealed a burning desire to play in the Champions League as soon as possible.

The Chelsea striker is currently enjoying a season-long loan spell at Everton, with the Merseyside outfit challenging the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool for a top-four finish.

Lukaku, though, belives his future lies with Chelsea - who currently lead the Premier League standings - and, most importantly, in the Champions League.

"I'm turning 21, I've been a professional for five years already. It is time," he told Het Laatste Nieuws.

"It is high time that I play in the Champions League. It is the next step I need in my development. Full stop.

"Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney were experienced already at that level when they were just 23-24 years old. I want to play Champions League football now. I must now show I'm ready for it.

"I still have two years on my contract and I know Chelsea follow my development. In the end it depends on what the manager thinks about me."

Despite setting his sights on making an impact at Stamford Bridge, Lukaku is still adamant that another loan move after his West Brom success - where is scored 17 goals - was essential to his development.

He continued: "After the season I had at West Brom, it was important that as a young player I kept developing. That means to play.

"To me there is a difference between playing in 20 or 45 matches a season and scoring 10 or 20 goals. Mourinho eventually understood that.

"If I can be better than I was last season, what is then holding me back? Then it will be time to play Champions League football, which is what I want to do."

Moyes rubbishes Rio Ferdinand retirement reports

    368354_heroa.jpg

David Moyes has described reports suggesting Rio Ferdinand will retire after being left out of Manchester United's trip to a warm-weather training camp as "complete nonsense."

United are understood to be travelling to Dubai on Thursday ahead of their Champions League clash with Olympiakos on February 25.

It had been suggested Ferdinand would be left out of the trip and would promptly call time on his career with his contract due to expire at the end of the season.

"I can only tell you whatever was written today was a load of rubbish," Moyes told reporters. "[It is] complete nonsense."

United travel to Arsenal on Wednesday before heading to the Middle East and Moyes feels, after a poor run of form, the break will serve his players well.

"We've got a chance to have a few days. We'll see. We'll go and try and have a few days to get ready. We've got a big Champions League game coming up in a week's time."

Kroos could be in trouble at Bayern, says Helmer

    366494_heroa.jpg

Former Bayern Munich defender Thomas Helmer believes that Toni Kroos faces a tough task to fight himself back into Pep Guardiola's starting XI.

The 24-year-old midfielder lost his starting berth after publicly showcasing his frustration with his substitution in the 2-1 win over Stuttgart last month, while the breakdown of talks over a new contract has also reportedly caused consternation at the Allianz Arena.

Consequently, Helmer thinks that the Germany international might have to settle for a spot on the bench for the foreseeable future.

"Pep gave a signal to the entire team by dropping Kroos. The fact that Toni didn't start in the past few games is almost certainly related to his reaction after he was taken off against Stuttgart," the 48-year-old told AZ.

"Kroos is the type of player that Guardiola likes. He was an undisputed starter in the first half of the season. But that was also the result of Thiago Alcantara and Mario Gotze's injury problems.

"He could be in trouble from here on. Pep also has Philipp Lahm, Thiago and Gotze who can feature in midfield. And those players are not the worst around ..."

Kroos has a contract with Bayern until June 2015 and both parties have so far been unable to reach an agreement over a new deal because of the player's wage demands.

Clubs such as Manchester United and Juventus are reportedly closely monitoring the Germany international's situation at the Allianz Arena.
