:love:Manchester United 3-1 Real Madrid: Young strikes twice to book International Champions Cup final place

    441067_heroa.jpg

Two goals from Ashley Young helped secure Manchester United's passage to the International Champions Cup final with a 3-1 win over Real Madrid.

In front of a crowd of 109,318 at Michigan Stadium - a record attendance for a game of football in the United States - Young netted twice in the first half either side of Gareth Bale's penalty.

Real posed more of a threat in the second half, but substitute Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez added a late third to ensure Louis van Gaal's side topped Group A.

Inter's 2-0 win over Roma earlier in the day had momentarily sent Walter Mazzarri's men to the summit of the group, and United knew they needed to avoid defeat in 90 minutes against Real to usurp the Italian side and book their place against Liverpool in Monday's final.

United looked sharper for much of the encounter, although there was an injury concern as Danny Welbeck was forced off shortly before the break.

Real, unable to qualify before play began, introduced Cristiano Ronaldo off the bench for the final 15 minutes, but the Portugal star was unable to make much of an impression against his former club.

United started the better of the two sides without carving out any clear goalscoring opportunities, Darren Fletcher's 20-yard drive wide of the post representing their best effort in the opening 15 minutes.

The Premier League side were rewarded for their dominance in the 21st minute, going in front courtesy of a glorious team move.

After Fletcher exchanged passes with Wayne Rooney, the ball was worked on to Welbeck, who teed up Young to place a finish inside Iker Casillas' near post.

Real were level six minutes later, though, Bale converting a spot-kick after he had been hauled down by Michael Keane on the left-hand side of the area.

Rooney thumped in a shot from 30 yards that was comfortable for Casillas before Bale brought a smart stop out of David De Gea with an acrobatic overhead kick 10 minutes prior to the interval.

Two minutes later, United were back in front as Young's teasing cross from the left crept in at the far post with Rooney failing to make any connection with his head.

There was concern for Van Gaal as Welbeck hobbled off to be replaced by Wilfried Zaha, while Juan Mata snatched a volley wide following a clever free kick routine involving Rooney.

At the start of the second half Bale terrorised Keane once again, breezing past him down the left before cutting back to Isco, whose shot was held by De Gea.

The Welshman continued to pose a threat and struck the outside of the right-hand post with a dipping free kick in the 55th minute.

Substitutes Shinji Kagawa and Chicharito combined in the 71st minute, but the latter saw his weak prodded effort saved by Casillas.

The Mexican went agonisingly close seven minutes later, failing to get sufficient contact on Jesse Lingard's inviting cross from the right.

But Chicharito made no mistake 10 minutes from time, however, diving in at the far post to head Kagawa's perfectly weighted cross into the net and round off an impressive performance from United.

They now head to the final to take on Liverpool, whose place was secured after Manchester City were beaten on penalties by Olympiakos.

Olympiakos 2-2 Manchester City (5-4 pens): Hart heroics not enough as Greek champions win shootout

    441042_heroa.jpg

Micah Richards blazed over the crossbar from the penalty spot as Manchester City's US Tour ended with a shoot-out defeat to Olympiakos.

A 2-2 draw in regulation time meant the match headed for spot-kicks and Anastasios Papazoglou kept his cool from 12 yards after Richards fired over the top.

Stevan Jovetic had earlier continued his purple patch with his fifth tournament goal, while Aleksandar Kolarov scored from the spot after half-time, only for Dimitrios Diamantakos to equalise on both occasions.

Olympiacos almost caught City out early on when Alejandro Dominguez collected the ball in the area and steered past Joe Hart, only for his celebrations to be cut short by the linesman's offside flag.

City responded well as Samir Nasir and Yaya Toure both curled efforts wide of the right-hand post, before Kolarov skipped effortlessly past Omar Elabdellaoui but saw his shot palmed away by Roberto.

The pressure finally told in the 35th minute with a fine solo goal from Jovetic, who beat one defender and showed neat trickery before beating Roberto at his near post.

However, the lead proved short-lived as Olympiacos equalised from the next attack. Pajtim Kasami dug out a cross from the right for Diamantakos to control and force home.

The half ended on a contentious note when Jovetic was bundled over by Avraam Papadopoulos, but the referee waved away the protests.

City piled on the pressure at the start of the second half and restored their lead when Kolarov blasted a 52nd-minute spot-kick high into the roof of the net after David Silva had been clumsily felled by Kostas Manolas.

But yet again Olympiacos came back, Diamantakos grabbing his second after beating the onrushing Hart to the ball and sliding into an empty net.

Roberto made a fine one-handed stop from Silva in the closing stages as the match headed to penalties.

Two saves each from Hart and Roberto each meant sudden death was required and, after John Guidetti and Andreas Bouchalakis both scored, Richards put his effort well over, allowing Papazoglou to score the winner and send Liverpool through to the final.

Nice 1-1 Barcelona: Xavi penalty ensures spoils are shared

    441041_heroa.jpg

Barcelona had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Nice in Saturday night's friendly encounter at Allianz Riviera.

New arrivals Jeremy Mathieu and Ivan Rakitic made their first appearances for Barca, together with Rafinha, who has returned from a loan spell with Celta Vigo.

In his side's first friendly since a youthful Barca XI beat Recreativo Huelva 1-0 last month, Luis Enrique fielded a strong line-up.

Yet Dario Cvitanich put the Ligue 1 outfit ahead after 21 minutes with a well-taken penalty after being brought down by Gerard Pique in the area.

Having been put under pressure for much of the game, things began to unravel for Nice after the break as they lost goalkeeper Mouez Hassen prior to Xavi equalising from the penalty spot following a foul on Munir El Haddadi.

The scoring stopped there, and Luis Enrique will likely be looking for an improved showing when Barca meet Napoli on Wednesday.

One of Mathieu's first involvements was conceding a free kick outside the area, with Eric Bautheac's subsequent curled effort forcing Marc-Andre ter Stegen into a smart stop down to his left.

With the game played at typical close-season pace, the crowd in southern France had to wait until the 19th minute for the next incident of note when Cvitanich was bundled over in the area by Pique.

The Argentine striker stepped up to slot the resulting spot-kick past Ter Stegen and open the scoring.

Pedro then came close to forging an opening but failed to control a deft lob from Jordi Alba when through on goal.

Andres Iniesta almost saw his free-kick deceive Hassen in the Nice goal via a deflection off Jeremy Pied as Barca began to crank up the pressure, Alba clipping the crossbar with an attempted cross soon after.

Just as the visitors were getting on top, they saw defender Martin Montoya limp off - young defender Patric replacing him shortly before the break.

Rakitic came into the fray for the second half and fellow substitute El Haddadi almost made Pied pay for a sloppy backpass shortly after, only to be denied by Hassen.

Pied almost made amends when he angled an effort marginally wide before Nice, already without one goalkeeper in Joris Delle, suffered another injury blow as Hassen went off injured after a collision with Gerard Deulofeu.

The first task for Hassen's replacement, Yoan Cardinale, was to pick the ball out of the net as Xavi equalised from the spot.

Substitute Sandro Ramirez struck the post and Marc Bartra also spurned a late opportunity as Barca failed to find a winner.

AC Milan 0-2 Liverpool: Allen & Suso on target as Lambert misses penalty

    440234_heroa.jpg

Liverpool ensured they headed into the final of the International Champions Cup final on the back of a victory as goals from Joe Allen and Suso secured a straightforward win over AC Milan.

Brendan Rodgers' side earned their victory despite Rickie Lambert missing a penalty in Charlotte as they scored in either half to seal the result.

It saw Filippo Inzaghi's side finish the pre-season tournament without a point, while Liverpool were already assured of a place in Monday's final against Manchester United.

A weakened Liverpool controlled possession in the opening exchanges as Milan kept numbers behind the ball.

The pressing of Rodgers' men would lead to the opening goal for Allen in the 17th minute.

Allen dispossessed Michael Essien before driving into the area and striking the post with his shot. Raheem Sterling's effort from the rebound was palmed away by Christian Abbiati, but Allen was on hand to tuck away a finish to make it 1-0.

The Premier League side had a chance to double their advantage in the 28th minute.

Sterling was brought down in the area and Lambert, who scored 34 straight penalties at Southampton, saw a poor spot-kick saved by Abbiati to the goalkeeper's left.

Milan settled into the encounter after the penalty save, but were unable to create clear-cut chances.

Inzaghi's men were much-improved early in the second half before the likes of Steven Gerrard, Philippe Coutinho and Emre Can were introduced by Rodgers on the hour-mark.

Milan goalkeeper Gabriel and defender Mattia De Sciglio were involved in a heavy collision during the second half, leading to the latter's substitution.

Neither team looked particularly threatening in the final stages before Suso's curling finish in the 90th minute.

Coutinho found space down the left before poking a pass to the Spaniard, who found the bottom corner from 20 yards.

While Liverpool prepare for the final, Milan head to Texas to face Chivas looking to find some form.

Xavi is back to his best – Luis Enrique

    427797_heroa.jpg

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique believes Xavi showed he is back to his peak after scoring against Nice in Saturday's 1-1 draw.

The Spain midfielder was the subject of some criticism last term as Barca finished the season without a major trophy before Vicente del Bosque's side crashed out of the World Cup in the group stages.

But the 34-year-old came off the bench at the Allianz Riviera to score from the spot in the Catalans' 1-1 draw with their Ligue 1 opponents and Luis Enrique was delighted by the veteran's current condition.

"Right now he's back to his best both in terms of fitness and motivation," the coach told the media after the game.

Barcelona's squad has been trimmed over the summer, with the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas sold, and Luis Enrique indicated he does not want to have to cut down his roster any further.

"I hope that all the players with me now are still here at the end of the season," explained the former Real Madrid player.

Reflecting on Saturday's performance, the coach admitted that there are improvements that he would like to see, but that the outcome of the game was of little concern to him.

"The result is what matters least," the 44-year-old said. "These games are for seeing where each player is and telling each of them what things they'll need to improve.

"We'e going the logical, and correct, way about things. We can't expect too much before the season has even started."

Barcelona's next outing is a friendly against Napoli in Geneva on Wednesday before meeting HJK Helsinki next Saturday.

Manchester United to face Liverpool in International Champions Cup final

    i

Manchester United and Liverpool will play each other in the International Champions Cup final on Tuesday after coming out on top in the group stage of the competition.

Liverpool's qualification for the match in Miami was confirmed after Manchester City's defeat on penalties to Olympiakos while the Red Devils' 3-1 win over Real Madrid proved enough for them to also go through.

The match will mark a first chance for Louis van Gaal to secure a victory over his new team's oldest rivals while also picking up some silverware following an impressive first month in charge.

Van Gaal has led the Old Trafford outfit to wins over Madrid and Roma while victory on penalties over Inter proved to be the defining result of their group campaign.

Brendan Rodgers' side, meanwhile, were victorious against Olympiakos in their opening match before beating Manchester City on penalties. The Reds complete their opening fixtures against AC Milan early on Sunday.

The final will kick-off at 02:00 CET on Tuesday August 5.

:(Van Persie to miss start of the season

    434718_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that Robin van Persie will miss the start of the season following a lengthy post-World Cup break.

The 30-year-old striker was a key component in Van Gaal's Netherlands team and helped take the Oranje to a third-place finish in Brazil.

And following the conclusion of the tournament, Van Persie was allowed an extended break, meaning he has missed all of United's pre-season preparations - a fact that has led Van Gaal to rule him out of the Premier League opening weekend.

“Robin wants to play every game, I know that, but so do the other 30 players in the squad," the 62-year-old said. "But players have to train and Robin needs a full training regime behind him before he can play again.

“Robin will begin training on Monday, but he won’t play in the friendly against Valencia on August 12, definitely not.

“And he won’t play in the Premier League at the start either, I think. People can criticise me for that decision but I know what you have to do with players who have had three weeks holiday.

“Hopefully, Robin will get his fitness back very fast. But at this moment, he won’t be playing."

United open their domestic season against Swansea City at Old Trafford on August 16.

Inter 2-0 Roma: Vidic and Nagatomo seal bragging rights for Nerazzurri

    441010_heroa.jpg

A goal each for Nemanja Vidic and Yuto Nagatomo secured a 2-0 win in the International Champions Cup for Inter over Serie A rivals Roma.

Signed on a free transfer from Manchester United in the off-season, Vidic headed his new club into the lead at the end of the first half in Philadelphia on Saturday.

Yuto Nagatomo added a second for Walter Mazzarri's men midway through the second half as Inter moved, at least temporarily, top of Group A in the pre-season competition.

Their progression to the final is dependent on United's result against Real Madrid, with Louis van Gaal's men needing to avoid defeat in 90 minutes to advance to the final against the winners of Group B.

Roma had their moments in the match, not least of all when Mattia Destro was guilty of a glaring miss shortly after the break when completely unmarked at close range with only goalkeeper Samir Handanovic to beat.

As a result, Roma's participation in the tournament ended, Rudi Garcia's side having taken three points from their three matches, courtesy of a 1-0 win over Real.

Juan Iturbe had the first effort on target with a weak shot from 25 yards that was comfortably held by Handanovic in the ninth minute.

Roma suffered a blow three minutes later when defender Leandro Castan hobbled off with what looked like a thigh injury, to be replaced by Mehdi Benatia.

Zdravko Kuzmanovic then stung the palms of Lukasz Skorupski with a thumping volley from just inside the area.

Skorupski was called into action once more in the 34th minute as Mauro Icardi got on the end of Jonathan's inviting cross, but his header lacked sufficient power to trouble the goalkeeper.

Radja Nainggolan threatened for Roma four minutes later, Handanovic making a meal of his low shot from 30 yards before gathering at the second attempt.

In first-half stoppage time Vidic met Dodo's left-wing free kick and glanced in a header that Skorupski could do little about.

Roma ought to have been level two minutes after the restart when Destro somehow headed wide of the target from five yards following a superb cross from Alessandro Florenzi.

Nainggolan's shot from distance fizzed wide of the left-hand post in the 58th minute, before the likes of Francesco Totti, Ashley Cole and Seydou Keita were all introduced off the bench by Garcia in a bid to get back into the match.

In the 69th minute, Nagatomo made the game safe for Inter. The Japan international found himself all alone at the back post and thumped a first-time finish in off the underside of the crossbar with Skorupski left helpless.

Roma did carve out one chance with five minutes remaining but Juan Carrizo, brought on for Handanovic, stood tall to deny Antonio Sanabria as the Paraguayan bore down on goal.

Pellegrini confirms Lampard will begin training with Manchester City

    423322_heroa.jpg

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that Frank Lampard will start training with the club following his move to New York City FC.

Goal learned on Friday that the England midfielder was set to sign a short-term deal with the Premier League champions as part of their partnership with the new MLS outfit.

And following the Blues' penalty shoot-out defeat to Olympiakos, Pellegrini revealed the midfielder will join the club prior to the start of the Premier League season.

"As you know Frank has signed a contract with New York City and will start working here in January as the season starts in March," he told reporters.

"From next Wednesday he will start working with our team and will play for us until then.

"At the moment he will work with the squad and be a member of the squad. He will fight for a position.

"He knows we have a very good team, we have a lot of players in his position. He is one player more.

"We have a lot of games particularly with the Champions League - so he's very important for our team."

Reports have suggested that Lampard would refuse to play against Chelsea when his new side face Jose Mourinho's team in the 2014-15 season.

But Pellegrini is hopeful that the player will be available for every match and plans to discuss Lampard's availability with the veteran midfielder.

"I will talk about all those things with him but he'll be a player for City and he'll play every game he needs to play.

"Is Lampard a six month loan? For the moment he will start working with our team from now until January and we'll see after that.

"He's a player for New York City and we'll what happens when he comes to us."

Lampard could make his first appearance for Manchester City when they face Arsenal in the Community Shield on August 10.

Manchester United - Real Madrid smashes attendance record in USA

    441053_heroa.jpg

Manchester United's 3-1 win over Real Madrid set a new record for attendance at a football match in the United States.

109,318 fans packed into Michigan Stadium, beating the previous record of 101,799, which was set at the 1984 Olympic final when France beat Brazil 2-0 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

That venue and tournament saw the only other six-figure football attendance in U.S. history, as 100,374 saw Yugoslavia defeat Italy 2-1 for the bronze medal.

Saturday's figure also eclipses the attendance for the World Cup final in 1994, which saw 94,194 watch Brazil take on Italy in the most high-profile game to take place in America to date.

Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez grabbed a goal for the Red Devils after Ashley Young scored two either side of Gareth Bale's penalty, continuing Louis van Gaal's positive start as United boss.

United now move on to face Liverpool in the final of the International Champions Cup on Aug. 4 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, while Madrid will now prepare for the Uefa Super Cup against Sevilla in Cardiff.
