Suarez: I've dreamed about Barcelona since I was little

    446474_heroa.jpg

Luis Suarez says he always dreamed of playing for Barcelona and he is looking forward to making a name for himself at the Liga giants.

The attacker joined Barcelona from Liverpool in a deal worth €88 million this summer and he is delighted to have fulfilled a lifelong dream by making the move to Camp Nou.

Speaking at a press conference for the first time after his suspension from football was reduced, the 27-year-old said: "I want to thank the club and all of the directors for the confidence they have had in me, and of course the coach Luis Enrique and all of the people who have supported me.

"I am looking forward to enjoying myself here and enjoying the group dynamic. I've been wanting to play for Barcelona for years and it's a dream come true to be here.

"I have been dreaming of playing for Barcelona for years. All the little boys want to achieve this. I didn't think it would ever happen, so I didn't think twice when the chance came up."

The Uruguay star then went on to voice his delight with his debut in the 6-0 win over Leon on Monday, though he claims he does not consider himself the club's star signing of the summer.

"It was very exciting to make my debut. I had never played at Camp Nou before, so it was very interesting to come out and see the fans. It was unbelievable. I never imagined something beautiful like this would happen," he said.

"Am I the star signing? Stars are up in the sky. I am just here to do everything for the team. It motivates you to play alongsides big names such as Lionel Messi and Neymar, but it's about all of the players.

"The coach has said some nice things to me, even though we didn't have an in-depth dialogue yet. He's focused on Elche for now. We will speak in more detail when my official debut gets closer."

Suarez was also questioned about the biting incident involving Italy's Giorgio Chiellini and he stressed that he has spoken to professionals to ensure there will be no repeat of the incident.

"It's a personal matter which I would rather not discuss, but I have been speaking with professionals [to make sure there will be no more biting incidents].

"My psychologist told me to get out and offer my apologies and I did that. I now want to move on and focus on football.

"Of course I was concerned after the Chiellini incident and not just about my transfer to Barcelona, but also about my reputation as a person. But that's in the past now."

Suarez could make his official Barcelona debut in the Clasico against Real Madrid on October 26, the day after his suspension comes to an end, and he has made it clear that he will be ready to face the Champions League holders.

"My debut against Madrid? It's still a long time. I don't think fitness will be an issue, but there's always the matter of adapting to the team.

"But I don't think there will be a problem if I'm physically alright."

Italy lack talent compared to other top nations, admits new head coach Conte

    446453_heroa.jpg

New Italy coach Antonio Conte admits the Azzurri lack the talent of other top nations and has challenged his players to work as a team to close the gap on the best.

The former Juventus boss was named last week as the successor to Cesare Prandelli - who resigned after Italy's dismal World Cup this summer - having agreed a two-year contract.

Conte was officially unveiled in Rome on Tuesday and, while he acknowledged the talent pool at his disposal is not as deep as those of the world's finest international sides, he has whole-heartedly accepted the challenge of restoring Italy's pre-eminence on the global stage.

"I can't say that I'm not emotional. I am very happy, very content. Everyone wants this job," he told reporters at the press conference in the Italian capital.

"I want to salute Cesare Prandelli, who was coach for four years and did great work. I wish him good luck at Galatasaray. I also want to thank Arrigo Sacchi for his work with the Italy youth sides these last years.

"I live to win. I live to search for wins. Other national teams have more talent than us. But playing as a team we can remove this gap. It is a challenge I willingly accept."

The former midfielder stepped down as Juventus coach by mutual consent earlier this summer after winning three consecutive Serie A titles and he admits he was surprised to return to coaching so quickly.

"After a very nice three years of winning with Juventus, we simply came to our natural conclusion," he explained. "I never expected to get back in the game after 35 days. I was looking abroad and studying languages. Then a call arrived from the FIGC [Italian Football Federation]."

During his three years in Turin, Conte was controversially suspended by the FIGC after allegedly failing to report match-fixing while he was coach of Bari. The 45-year-old was asked about the ban and also, awkwardly, given the Calciopoli dispute between Juventus and the FIGC, about how many titles Juventus have won.

"My suspension was unjust. I got through the ban, with a lot of pain. But it is through journeys like this that I grew," he explained.

"Regarding the numbers of the Scudetti. I know that I won eight Scudetti, five as a player and three as a coach."

Newly-elected FIGC president Carlo Tavecchio described Conte as the finest coach on the continent and claims they reached an agreement over his appointment after a short number of discussions.

"Conte is the best coach in Europe. An agreement was reached with Conte at the third meeting between us," he said.

Rodgers calls on Liverpool squad to fill Suarez void

    446370_heroa.jpg

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has called on his entire team to chip in with goals as they still hunt for Luis Suarez's replacement.

Rodgers spoke after Sunday's scrappy 2-1 Premier League win over Southampton about his desire to bring a genuine goalscorer to the club in the wake of Suarez's departure to Barcelona.

The Uruguay forward – the Premier League's top scorer last term with 31 in 33 games - left Anfield for a reported €88 million fee and Rodgers has wasted no time in making several additions to his squad and while the search goes on for a replacement, Rodgers wants Liverpool to improve as a group.

"More goals from everyone - that's the objective," Rodgers told the club's official website. "Everyone will want to improve. Raheem [Sterling] had 10 goals last year.

"It was a great pass by Jordan [Henderson, who set up Sterling's opener on Sunday]. He picked him out really well with a wonderful ball and he gets himself in the box with a wonderful finish.

"It was a really good finish and that started to open up the game a bit, with a bit more space to work in. But they were dangerous opponents."

Liverpool scored 101 goals in the Premier League last term as they finished second, just two points behind Manchester City.

Only three sides have scored 100 goals or more in a Premier League season in the last 10 years, with Chelsea, in 2009-10, and City – last term – achieving the feat.

Marin relishing chance to impress with Fiorentina

    446442_heroa.jpg

Marko Marin is relishing the chance to prove himself in Italy after joining Fiorentina on loan from Chelsea.

After coming through Borussia Monchengladbach's ranks and moving to Werder Bremen in 2009, the winger's form was enough to convince Chelsea to part with an estimated €12 million to secure his services in April 2012.

Injury prevented Marin from hitting the ground running at Stamford Bridge, with subsequent struggles for game-time under Roberto Di Matteo and Rafael Benitez in 2012-13.

The 16-cap Germany international spent last season on loan at Sevilla, chipping in with seven assists in 30 appearances, and hopes to have a similar impact at Fiorentina.

"I'm looking forward to an exciting time at ACF Fiorentina and I will do my best to support the team," he wrote on Facebook. "I will learn Italian as fast as possible but for the time being I will still need the help of an interpreter.

"My special thanks go to Sevilla FC and to all the fans.

"It was a great experience to play in Spain and I had an amazing time with lots of fun."

Fiorentina get their Serie A campaign under way at Roma on Saturday, when Marin could come up against former Chelsea team-mate Ashley Cole.

Rooney work ethic not good enough - Hamann

    445442_heroa.jpg

Dietmar Hamann has urged Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney to work harder if he wants to be classified among the elite in football.

Rooney is third on the list of United's all-time leading goalscorers after his strike against Swansea City on Saturday took his tally to 217 in all competitions.

But, comparing the 28-year-old to former United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, ex-Liverpool and Manchester City midfielder Hamann said the Portugal captain's worth ethic is the only thing separating the two.

"You have to live like a top player," Hamann told Perform. "If you want to be the best, you have to live like the best.

"And if you like to party on the weekends and drink beer or a glass of wine too much that could be negative for your performance and I think that's the big difference between Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Rooney always knocked on the door to be world class but never did the final step. And Ronaldo overtook him because he's obsessed. He's a real hard worker. The way he shoots his free kicks is the result of years of training. That doesn't come overnight.

"As I said, often the really talented players tend to do a little bit less because they can get away with it and the others are not as talented as they are. But if you have the talent, the morale and work really hard then you'll become a Ronaldo or a [Lionel] Messi."

Hamann, however, feels new United manager Louis van Gaal could go a long way in helping Rooney perform at his best, having appointed the England international as skipper.

"Van Gaal made him the captain. He knows that it's his last chance - he is 28 or 29," the German added. "Rooney needs to perform now, he has three or four years left to play at the highest level. Van Gaal is a coach who gets the best out of players - or he sends them away.

"He made him captain, the relationship seems to be good, and that is good for Manchester United and for Wayne Rooney. I am expecting a lot from him this season, but we have to wait to see whether the team is good enough."

Guardiola: No problem if Bayern don't sign a defender

    445855_heroa.jpg

Pep Guardiola is confident Bayern Munich have what it takes to cope with the absence of Javi Martinez even if they fail to sign a replacement.

The Spain international sustained a serious knee injury in Bayern's 2-0 Supercup loss against Borussia Dortmund and will consequently be out of action for at least the remainder of 2014.

Guardiola admitted at the weekend that he would like to sign a replacement for Martinez, with Roma star Mehdi Benatia allegedly topping the former Barcelona coach's wishlist.

However, the Morocco international's hefty pricetag could prove to be too much of an obstacle and Guardiola has made it clear that he is happy to work with his current squad if no fresh blood comes in.

"It would be great if something's possible on the transfer market," Guardiola was quoted as saying by Bild.

"But if it's not possible, so be it. We will just keep working with the players we already have.

"It's not a problem for me."

With Holger Badstuber, Dante and Jerome Boateng, Bayern have just three fit accomplished centre-backs in their squad following Martinez's absence.

Hart ready to fight for Manchester City spot

    446348_heroa.jpg

Joe Hart is determined to keep fellow goalkeeper Willy Caballero on the Manchester City bench.

Manuel Pellegrini made it clear Caballero would be in his plans after saying he has "two No.1 keepers" ahead of the FA Community Shield against Arsenal, which the Argentine shot-stopper started at Wembley.

However, England No.1 Hart reclaimed his place in the starting XI as defending champions City opened the Premier League season with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United on Sunday.

And while he is relishing the challenge with Caballero, Hart has no plans of relinquishing his spot.

"It suits me. I'm a fighter, I've been a fighter all my life," the 27-year-old told reporters. "I'll continue to do that. I'll carry on trying to perform to my best and hopefully keeping clean sheets.

"I wouldn't say it's given me an extra edge because I've always had an edge. Caballero is a great signing.

"We were sorry to lose [Costel] Pantilimon to Sunderland and we wish him well but Willy has come in - we know he's a great keeper and what he's done at Malaga. He wants to play as much as I do.

"But I've got the place at the moment and I'm going to do everything I can to keep it. You always want to look to improve - whether it's small margins or big margins."

Rakitic: Suarez will give Barcelona some great moments

    446294_heroa.jpg

Ivan Rakitic is confident that Luis Suarez will bring Barcelona plenty of great moments to the club following the Uruguay international's debut in the 6-0 friendly win over Leon.

After Suarez's training suspension was lifted last week by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the former Liverpool star was cleared to play in friendlies and made his debut at Camp Nou on Monday, coming on for the final 13 minutes versus the Liga MX club.

Suarez is still banned from playing in official games until October 26 after being found guilty of biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup, but Rakitic is thrilled to have the chance to familiarise himself with the player.

"For us it is very important to have him in the locker room, working, getting to know him," the Croatia international told reporters.

"His quality we all know, there's not much to say there, he's going to give us a lot of great moments.

"So we just have to wait for the time to pass so we can have him on the pitch with us."

Meanwhile, head coach Luis Enrique claimed he will be looking to provide a platform that allows the team's leading players - such as Lionel Messi, Suarez and Neymar - to shine in the final third.

"Well, it think the performance against Leon was very good," the 44-year-old said.

"It's not very difficult when two players of such quality play together, like Messi and Neymar.

"We didn't have Pedro, who wasn't able to play because of a stomach problem but I have many solutions, many possibilities, players with different profiles, and we are looking to have those connection between players of great quality."

However, Luis Enrique insisted Barcelona will continue to focus on a possession-based game as he aims to dominate "all aspects" of matches.

"We are interested in having the possession for as long as we can. There were moments where control was lost, and that is not in our interest, we want to control the games, to dominate all aspects of the game."

Wenger: Champions League play-off suits Arsenal

    446086_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said their packed schedule due to a Champions League play-off is a plus for the London club.

The wider viewpoint of the side finishing fourth in England, and thus forced to play a two-legged play-off to enter the European tournament's group stages, is that the extra fixtures are unwanted burdens in an already full-up fixture list.

Arsenal are in Turkey to tackle Super Lig side Besiktas on Tuesday, but Wenger said his men were embracing the chance to find form - despite looking ahead to Everton on Saturday.

"Every game you win makes you stronger and, on that front, winning the games helps to gain confidence," Wenger told the club's official website.

"The group still needs to grow and to gain confidence we have to grow. [The play-off is] not affecting too much my transfer policy. Financially it is a big game but it's not that that's the most important [matter].

"We want to compete at the top level, we want to fight against the best in Europe and that's the real target of the competition tomorrow. It's more than the financial consequences.

"We have always in the history of the club adapted to our financial potential but what is very important is that we want to play with the best. That's the real target of the qualifier."

Wenger also confirmed defender Kieran Gibbs was absent from the first leg of the play-off due to a hamstring problem, while striker Yaya Sanogo was also sidelined by a hamstring injury.

Midfielder Mathieu Flamini, meanwhile, overcame illness to join the squad.

Alexis Sanchez can take Arsenal to next level in Champions League – Campbell

    441167_heroa.jpg

Alexis Sanchez is the man to make the difference for Arsenal in the Champions League this season, says ex-Gunner Sol Campbell.

The Londoners kick off their European campaign on Tuesday as they take on Besiktas in Istanbul in the first leg of their Champions League play-off.

Arsene Wenger is desperate to make an impact on the competition after a succession of last-16 exits in recent years, but Campbell believes that new big-money signing Alexis can take them to the next level.

"It is important to bring in players like Alexis who have played in and won [big games] in the Champions League," Campbell told Goal.

"Alexis understands the tournament. We have been there a number of times in the Champions League and it is all about every year being in the game and pushing hard.

"We just need that bit of luck to go our way but you also have to put your neck on the line and buy players – which we are now. You need to be in it to win it and that is what Arsenal are trying to do.

"They are not spending crazily everywhere but if someone comes up they are now prepared to go for it."

Sanchez arrived from Barcelona last month on the back of a successful World Cup with Chile, and Campbell is certain he will set the Emirates alight.

"Alexis is definitely going to be a good signing for Arsenal," the former defender, who had two spells at the Gunners as a player, predicted.

"He has come from a fantastic club in Barcelona so he knows the pressure of playing in that kind of environment.

"The pressure will be the same at Arsenal so that is a good thing. His dynamics are good, he knows where the goal is and is very workmanlike at getting back into position as well.

"He knows how to play in big teams and that is what you need in a player. You need big-time players who also work hard, so he has a fantastic balance."

Barcelona set to sign €6m Douglas, Sao Paulo confirm

    444911_heroa.jpg

Sao Paulo have confirmed that they are close to reaching an agreement with Barcelona over the sale of Douglas for an initial fee of €6 million, potentially rising to €8m.

The Catalans are keen to add a new right-back to their squad as they prepare for life after Dani Alves, who has been linked with a move away from Camp Nou, and they see the 24-year-old Douglas as a good addition to their back-line.

The transfer is not a done deal just yet, but Sao Paulo are confident of reaching an agreement by the end of this week.

"The initial transfer fee will be €6m, but if may rise to €8m if Douglas achieves certain goals which have yet to be defined. Negotiations are nearly done," Sao Paulo vice-president Ataide Gil Guerreiro told Radio Jovem Pan.

"However, certain things may arise that could hold up the deal during contract discussions. We still have some way to go before both sides are speaking the exact same language on a number of details. I think it will be a done deal within three or four days.

"We have asked for Douglas to stay at Sao Paulo on loan for another season, but we are still in talks over this. It is a remote possibility as things stand."

Rumours suggested Dani Alves would join the Brasilerao outfit as part of the deal but Guerreiro insists this is not the case.

"Dani Alves to Sao Paulo? There is nothing to these rumours. He has a high salary and we are not interested in signing him," he added.

Douglas is a product of the Goias youth academy and joined Sao Paulo in February 2012.

Mourinho: Barcelona didn't know how to use Fabregas

    446233_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has accused Barcelona of playing Cesc Fabregas out of position following the midfielder's impressive Chelsea debut.

The Spain international joined for the Liga giants in a deal worth €36 million earlier in the summer, and played a part in all three goals in Monday's 3-0 win over Burnley.

Barcelona hit out at Fabregas following his exit, detailing declining performances towards the end of each season, but Mourinho feels the club never truly knew his real role.

"When the players are your first choice it is very difficult to make a mistake," he told reporters. "Fabregas was our first choice for that position. I know clearly what the player is because we were so long in the same league.

"He moved to Spain also, so for the last 10 years we have been in the same league for six or seven. I know exactly what he will bring.

"For Barca he was the fake nine, the number ten and winger but I know and he knows what is his best position so he is giving exactly what we need. Quick thinking in midfield. He brings people in the same direction. I am really happy."

Chelsea overcame a shock Burnley lead to run out comfortable winners at Turf Moor and Mourinho praised midfielder duo Fabregas and Nemanja Matic for their assured displays.

"The team played very well but I agree with Cesc being man of the match because he and [Nemanja] Matic controlled the game and dictated the intensity of it," said the Chelsea manager.

"They decided how to control the pace. They were both good brains in this team and I am happy with that because last season we could not control the game as we controlled [it] today."

:(AC Milan, Manchester United, Monaco & the teams who must spend or face disaster

    446386_heroa.jpg

There is under a fortnight to go until the transfer window slams shut for Europe's major leagues. The market closes on September 1 at 1800CET for the Bundesliga, at 2300 local time for Serie A, and at midnight in Spain, England, France and the Netherlands.

This summer has already seen countless big-money transfers, with Barcelona splashing the cash on Luis Suarez, Real Madrid digging deep for James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos, and the English Premier League on the verge of breaking the record for money spent in a transfer window.

But, while there have been some clear winners and losers so far, there are a number of clubs who have been slow to get their chequebook out and who risk a disastrous season unless they start moving fast. Below are five clubs who must spend in the next two weeks.

    MANCHESTER UNITED

    445442_heroa.jpg

As Manchester United's 2-1 defeat at home to Swansea in their Premier League opener on Saturday proved, Louis van Gaal can't produce miracles. With the exception of his spell at AZ, the no-nonsense Dutchman will have never begun a job with a weaker set of players at his disposal. "The weakest United team in 20 years," as former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman has described them.

The only members of Van Gaal's squad of undoubted Manchester United class are David De Gea, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie. The club has spent the last couple of months courting countless big names to add to the early, expensive purchases of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw - including Arturo Vidal, Juan Cuadrado, Mats Hummels and Kevin Strootman - but with just a fortnight until the window shuts, none have arrived.

Under-fire executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is closing in on a deal for Sporting's Marcos Rojo, but United are desperate for top-class players in defence and midfield. The current options for Van Gaal's back three are Phil Jones, Johnny Evans, Chris Smalling and Tyler Blackett – nowhere near Champions League standard. The alternatives in the centre of midfield are just as meagre, and Utd will continue to be bossed in the middle of the park by Premier League outfits.

If the 2012-13 Premier League champions want to finish in the top four and return to where they belong in the Champions League then they simply must sign at least two or three top players in the next couple of weeks.

    AC MILAN

    446382_heroa.jpg

Milan endured a disastrous 2013-14 season, finishing eighth in Serie A and going through three coaches in the space of six months. The new campaign will prove to be just as depressing unless Silvio Berlusconi opens his wallet before the market closes. In pre-season, the Rossoneri have lost to Olympiakos, Manchester City, Liverpool and Valencia – conceding 12 goals along the way.

Despite the free signings of Diego Lopez (who endured a miserable debut against the Spaniards on Sunday), Alex and Jeremy Menez, Milan need significant strengthening in every outfield department. The defence and midfield is packed full of average and ageing players, while in attack, Stephan El Shaarawy is returning from a long term injury and Mario Balotelli is not a guarantee either due to his off-field issues.

Pippo Inzaghi's priority is to sign a top-class right winger for his new 4-3-3 formation, with €20 million-rated Alessio Cerci his preferred option. But while the Torino man would inject some dynamism into the side, he won't compensate for all the shortcomings behind him – especially a midfield that will be outclassed by the likes of Juventus, Roma, Napoli, Fiorentina and even Inter. Unfortunately, CEO Adriano Galliani has been given very little money to spend and will have to sell before he can sign players like Cerci (who is closer to Atletico Madrid, anyway). Modest targets like Adel Taarabt are more realistic right now.

    MONACO

    445934_heroa.jpg

This time last year, Monaco looked like they were going to become Europe's next super club. A gross outlay of €166m saw the newly-promoted Monte Carlo-based outfit acquire Colombian superstars Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez, as well as Joao Moutinho, Geoffrey Kondogbia and Eric Abidal.

But after securing a return to the Champions League by finishing second in Ligue 1, the spending by Dmitry Rybolovlev has dried up. Lower-level players such as Toulouse's Aymen Abdennour have been brought in, while star man James has been sold to Real Madrid and defensive organiser Abidal lost to Olympiakos.

Monaco's start to the new season has been disastrous. They are second from bottom in Ligue 1 with no points from two games, and were thrashed 4-1 by Bordeaux on Sunday. With their current squad, even Champions League qualification could prove to be a struggle this season. The defence is woefully short on quality and will ship goals galore unless at least a couple of stoppers are brought in. Joao Moutinho continues to disappoint and new blood is also needed in midfield and attack if he is to finally show his true colours. Failure to do so may even push Falcao out of the door, too.

    HAMBURG

After going through a nightmare season last time out, Hamburg need to spend big to avoid a humiliating relegation from the Bundesliga. The Imtech Arena side narrowly avoided the drop via the playoff in May and their transfer activity so far this summer does not inspire confidence. Many of their squad are too old or simply not up to the task, and they have failed to add enough talent to their ranks.

Of the €23m they've spent, a big proportion of it was on Johan Djourou and Pierre-Michel Lasogga, who were already at the club last term on loan. Valon Behrami and Nicolai Muller could prove to be decent acquisitions, but their midfield is still in dire need of regeneration. Most importantly, the loss of Hakan Calhanoglu to Bayer Leverkusen must be compensated for with the signing of more quality.

    FEYENOORD

Feyenoord generated plenty of funds with the outgoing transfers of Daryl Janmaat, Stefan de Vrij, Bruno Martins and Graziano Pelle, yet they have been reluctant to spend much of the money that came in. Heerenveen winger Bilal Basacikoglu has been the only high-profile addition so far and they have suffered on the pitch in the opening weeks of the 2014-15 campaign.

Besiktas proved to be too strong in the Champions League qualifiers, while they have looked unimpressive in their Eredivisie games against ADO Den Haag and Heerenveen – securing a fortuitous late win in the former and rescuing a point in the latter. If Feyenoord are to have any chance of challenging for the title this season, they desperately need to spend in the next two weeks. And if they fail to sign a forward of relative quality, they will even struggle to finish in the top three.

Bayern needed 'perfect modern striker' Lewandowski, says Elber

Former Bayern Munich striker Giovane Elber believes Robert Lewandowski is exactly the kind of player the Bavarians needed in order to challenge for top honours again in 2014-15.

The Poland star joined Bayern from Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer this summer and Elber is hugely impressed with the 25-year-old's performances in pre-season.

"Mario Mandzukic scored a lot of goals for Bayern, but you must admit that Lewandowski's goal in the Telekom Cup against Wolfsburg was simply stunning," Elber told Spox.

"Bayern should be happy Lewandowski now plays in Munich and no longer for Dortmund. Bayern needed a player like him."

Elber believes that the World Cup proved the importance of a more rounded, mobile striker in modern football - a role for which Lewandowski is perfectly suited.

"You can no longer achieve much with a striker who only waits for the ball in the area. We all saw that at the World Cup. Germany had a winning formula with Thomas Muller and Brazil did not with Fred," he said.

"A modern striker should not only score goals, but also contribute to his side. He has to think and add something to the team. Lewandowski is perfect for that role.

"I am very curious to see whether Lewandowski can do as much for Bayern in the Champions League as he did for Dortmund."

Lewandowski has netted 74 goals in the Bundesliga so far, while scoring 17 times in the Champions League for Dortmund.
