Eto'o closes in on move to Everton

    380263_heroa.jpg

Samuel Eto'o is closing in on a free transfer to Everton after Liverpool pulled out of a deal to sign him.

Roberto Martinez's team have made an offer to the 33-year-old striker and are hopeful of agreeing terms.

Eto'o was in line for a move to Liverpool until Brendan Rodgers switched his attentions to Mario Balotelli, who is expected to complete a €20 million switch to Anfield on Monday.

Martinez wants to sign an additional striker to provide proven back-up to €36m spearhead Romelu Lukaku, with Manchester United's Danny Welbeck also being monitored.

Eto'o wants a two-year deal and is likely to lower his €163,000-a-week wage demands if a contract with a Premier League club is spread over a longer term.

Asked about speculation linking Everton with Eto'o and Welbeck, Martinez said: "There is a lot of money involved in those two. At the moment, if I am honest with you, I am looking at all the options.

"While the window is open we are looking at anyone who can help us and also looking at our injured players and seeing how they react.

"Bryan Oviedo and Arouna Kone will have a big say on how we end the window and I have an open mind about it.

"We are to going to make sure we make the right decisions."

Cameroon star Eto'o was released by Chelsea at the end of last season and is currently a free agent.

Simeone: I made a mistake and will pay the price

    447719_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has made it clear that he is ready to pay the price for his dismissal in the second leg of their Supercopa de Espana tie against Real Madrid.

The Argentine was sent from the dugout just 26 minutes in following another altercation with officials on the touchline and he has stressed that he will accept the consequences as he is keen to move on.

"It doesn't do any good to keep talking about the same thing. The people who make the decisions will have to see what a fair punishment is," Simeone was quoted as saying by AS.

"When someone makes a mistake it's only right that they pay for it, we are waiting to see what the price is.

"My assistant German Burgos has the ability to stand in and he has my trust; we see football in the same way."

The Atletico coach then went on to discuss the future of Toby Alderweireld amid ongoing reports that the Belgium international is set to leave the club.

"He is an Atletico player for now. He has options to leave, but we will count on him as long as he is here.

"We are very grateful for the work he has put in for us and happy with his attitude. He is one of the group."

Alderweireld, 25, joined Atletico from Ajax in the summer of 2013, but has been unable to secure regular first-team action at the Vicente Calderon.

    Inzaghi: I never doubted Honda

    448074_heroa.jpg

AC Milan coach Filippo Inzaghi has stressed that he never doubted Keisuke Honda in the wake of the midfielder's strong performances in pre-season.

The Japan international failed to impress in his opening six months at the club following his winter move from CSKA Moscow and there were doubts as to whether Honda would be able to succeed at Milan.

However, he has silenced his doubters for now with a string of good performances as the Serie A side prepare for the 2014-15 campaign, netting the winner in this weekend's 1-0 Tim Trophy win over Juventus.

"The game against Juventus was not his first brilliant performance this pre-season," Inzaghi told reporters.

"It has definitely helped him that he has been here for the entire pre-season, but I never had any doubts about his qualities.

"And I think that playing on the right is his natural position, where he can express himself the best."

The 28-year-old has so far made 16 appearances in all competitions for Milan, scoring twice.

    Sunderland open Kalou talks

    405906_heroa.jpg

Sunderland have opened talks over a move for former Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou, Goal understands. The Ivory Coast international is a target for several European clubs but could leave Lille this summer and favours a return to the Premier League.

The Black Cats are eager to conclude a number of deals before the transfer window closes after having already missed out on Eduardo Vargas, who joined QPR on loan from Napoli.Sunderland remain interested in Liverpool striker Fabio Borini, who spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light, although any move for the Italian is likely to be a temporary rather than a permanent deal.

Other targets include Danny Welbeck, whose future at Manchester United looks uncertain, and Corinthians striker Paolo Guerrero_One player who is set to leave the Stadium of Light this summer is Modibo Diakite.

Goal understands the defender is in talks to terminate his contract and complete a move to Fiorentina - where he spent last season on loan.

Juventus lead Podolski race as Wenger says he can leave Arsenal

    447530_heroa.jpg

Juventus lead the race for Lukas Podolski after Arsene Wenger sanctioned the sale of the Arsenal forward, Goal understands.

The German was told in a meeting with the Gunners boss that he can find a new club in the final week of the transfer window.

And the Gunners would prefer to sell the 29-year-old if their valuation of between €12.5m and €14m is met, rather than loan him out for the season.

Podolski has an agreement in principle with Italian champions Juve, but he also has offers on the table from Wolfsburg, Galatasaray, Olympiakos and New York Red Bulls.

It was revealed last week that Arsenal were braced for offers for the World Cup winner as Wenger prepared to sanction his departure.

Podolski was a marginalised figure at Emirates Stadium last season and, with growing competition for the attacking roles, is willing to move in search of regular football.

He did not feature in the 18-man Arsenal squad that travelled to Everton last Saturday even though he was fit to play.

Podolski, who turned 29 in June, has two years remaining on his contract and was ignored in the flurry of extended deals handed to senior players at the end of last season.

Wenger does not believe that the Germany international has the physical power and technical ability to spearhead the attack and he is behind the likes of new signing Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and Tomas Rosicky in the battle for the flank roles.

Podolski is believed to be the only senior Arsenal player who could be sold in the final weeks of the window. Wenger is keen to hang on to Costa Rica forward Joel Campbell, who has attracted strong interest from Premier League clubs and overseas.

Ronaldo does not have injury problems, says Ancelotti

    446700_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has insisted that Cristiano Ronaldo does not have any injury problems, but has admitted that the Portugal international still needs some work in order to reach peak fitness.

The prolific attacker was plagued by injuries toward the end of the 2013-14 campaign, while his physical problems also affected his pre-season.

Nevertheless, Ancelotti has made it clear that Ronaldo is raring to go again ahead of Madrid's La Liga opener at home against Cordoba on Monday.

"Ronaldo trained well and he's available for the match against Cordoba. He has no problems," Ancelotti said at a press conference.

"His pre-season was not very regular because he needed individual work to resolve his niggles. Last season he had tendinitis and he needed individual exercises to sort it out.

"We will have to make full use of next week to do training and specific work to improve his condition. It will be good for him."

The 29-year-old netted 31 goals in 30 league appearances last term.

Guardiola will lead Bayern to more success, says Hitzfeld

    445855_heroa.jpg

Former Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has little doubt that Pep Guardiola will guide the Bavarians to more success in the years to come.

The 43-year-old guided Bayern to the domestic double in his first season in charge, yet also received his fair share of criticism for his treatment of players such as Toni Kroos and Mario Mandzukic.

Nevertheless, Hitzfeld is confident the ex-Barcelona coach is the right man for Bayern.

"I reckon Guardiola will stay at Bayern for a few more years and I have no doubt about it that the club will continue to be successful with Guardiola at the helm," Hitzfeld told Kicker.

"Bayern said that they will never fire Guardiola in an attempt to make it clear that his position is stable and that is a good thing. It shows that they are 100 per cent satisfied with Guardiola.

"Success always helps strengthen a coach's position. But I get the feeling Bayern are on the same page as Guardiola anyway.

"Bayern need a strong coach like Guardiola. Although I get the feeling that he's open to the opinion of others as well."

The Bavarians started the 2014-15 Bundesliga campaign with a 2-1 win over Wolfsburg on Friday.

Balotelli capable of replacing Suarez - James

    442469_heroa.jpg

Mario Balotelli is capable of filling the void left by the departed Luis Suarez at Liverpool, according to David James.

Balotelli arrived at Liverpool's Melwood training complex on Friday to finalise the details of a €20 million move to Anfield, with the deal set to be announced early this week.

The mercurial 24-year-old will be tasked with helping Brendan Rodgers replace the scoring prowess of Suarez, who joined Barcelona in a €88m deal this summer after netting 31 goals in the Premier League last season.

Few doubt Balotelli's ability but his temperament has been questioned throughout his rollercoaster career, while previous managers Jose Mourinho and Roberto Mancini both became exasperated with his inconsistency.

But James, who made over 200 appearances in seven years at Liverpool and is now player-manager of Indian Super League side Kerala Blasters, believes in the ability of Brendan Rodgers and his Anfield coaching team to succeed where others have failed.

"Mario Balotelli is a gifted player," the former England international told Goal. "He has been in the spotlight as a very young player. You grow up.

"With that sort of talent and with the way Liverpool have bought players into the club, they wouldn’t bring in someone who wasn’t capable of fulfilling what they require in that position.

"I’m sure there will be stories about him – good stories and other. Probably most of them wouldn’t be true like the old ones.

"The reality is that Liverpool will bring him in as a player and if he delivers as Suarez did on the field, then he will be a good acquisition and fans will stick behind him."

James also had words of praise for Raheem Sterling, who has enjoyed a meteoric rise to domestic and international prominence since working his way back into the Liverpool team last November.

"Raheem Sterling’s positives from last season are superb," he added. "For a young man, 19 years of age, when he does something good it is usually sensational.

"There were always question marks over areas of his game and understanding at such a young age, which is something you develop. I think this season he has already shown that he is starting to develop with a better understanding of the game."

Arsenal's Manolas bid continues to stall

    444260_heroa.jpg

Arsenal's bid to sign Kostas Manolas as a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen continues to stall over personal terms.

Manolas has been targeted as a replacement for Vermaelen, who left the Gunners for Barcelona earlier in the summer after falling behind central defensive pairing Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in the pecking order.

Goal understands Arsenal held fresh talks with the Olympiakos defender's representatives on Friday after being quoted an €10 million transfer fee to sign the Greece international.

But the Gunners are yet to reach an agreement with Manolas, and Roma are now understood to have emerged as rivals for the centre-back's signature.

Roma look set to sell Mehdi Benatia, who has attracted interest from a host of top European clubs including Chelsea, Manchester City, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

And Manolas has been lined up as a replacement for Benatia by the Serie A side, whose season kicks off at home against Fiorentina on Saturday.

However, Arsenal remain in the hunt for Manolas, who could yet make the €10m switch to north London.

Atletico are Barcelona's main title rivals, says Bartomeu

    446169_heroa.jpg

Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu feels Atletico Madrid will prove to be the Catalans' biggest rivals in the race for the Liga title and not arch-rivals Real Madrid.

Atletico finished three points clear of Barcelona in 2013-14 to secure their first league title since 1996 and Bartomeu has stressed that Diego Simeone and his men deserve respect following last term's success.

"We have a lot of rivals in the league, but especially Atletico Madrid, the defending champions," Bartomeu told the official Barcelona website.

"They’ll be a very strong opponent once more and they deserve all of our respect. But then again, so do all of the teams."

The Barcelona chief then went on to praise Lionel Messi in the wake of his match-winning performance in Sunday's 3-0 win over Elche.

"Messi is the best player in the world. He’s shown that once again. He scored and he created chances. That’s the Messi we all know."

Barcelona resume La Liga action away against Villarreal on Sunday.

:(Ebosse death prompts Algerian league suspension

    448237_heroa.jpg

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has postponed next weekend's league fixtures following the death of Albert Ebosse.

The 24-year-old striker died after being struck on the head by an object thrown from the stands after JS Kabylie's 2-1 home defeat to USM Alger, in which he scored his side's only goal. And the FAF have now confirmed the temporary suspension of domestic competition, while the remainder of the Cameroonian's salary is set to be paid to his family.

A statement read: "All the matches of the championships of professional and amateur leagues... scheduled across the country for the weekend of August 29 and 30 are suspended and postponed until a later date.

"This is in homage to Albert Ebosse, who tragically died, and also to protest the irresponsible actions of some fanatics and hooligans that perpetuate violence in stadiums and has reached unacceptable proportions.

"FAF, the federal office and members of the general assembly will study soon other more coercive measures that may disqualify the offending club from all competitions."FAF, the LFP [Ligue de Football Professionnelle] and JSK decided to grant compensation in the amount of 10 million dinars (€95,000) to the family of the deceased.

"Furthermore, it was decided by mutual agreement with JS Kabylie, all deceased player salaries will be fully paid to his family until his contract expired with JSK."
