:(:(:(Burnley 0-0 Manchester United: Van Gaal still without a win despite Di Maria debut

    450374_heroa.jpg

Manchester United’s record signing Angel Di Maria was unable to inspire his side to victory as the Red Devils were held to a goalless draw by Burnley at Turf Moor.

The new No.7 made his full debut for the Red Devils but lasted only 68 minutes as Louis van Gaal replaced the Argentina international with Anderson.

Having failed to beat Swansea City or Sunderland prior to a midweek League Cup humbling at the hands of MK Dons, Van Gaal's men produced another disjointed display and could have few complaints with the result despite being denied a late penalty when substitute Ashley Barnes appeared to handle a shot from Ashley Young.

Indeed, Burnley had opportunities to emulate the 1-0 victory they memorably secured when the sides last met at Turf Moor in August 2009, with David Jones coming the closest to a goal when striking the crossbar early on.

Sean Dyche's side will surely take heart from claiming a first Premier League point of the season, following defeats to Chelsea and Swansea.

By contrast, United's performance - on a day that the club agreed a deal to bring in Netherlands international Daley Blind from Ajax - is likely to heighten concerns at Old Trafford.

An unchanged Burnley came roaring out of the blocks and twice came close to punishing defensive errors in the opening five minutes.

Former United midfielder Jones curled a left-footed free-kick against the woodwork after Phil Jones had needlessly fouled Lukas Jutkiewicz.

David de Gea was well-beaten on that occasion, but the goalkeeper made an important stop to deny Jutkiewicz within 60 seconds following a sloppy backpass from Jonny Evans, who struggled badly in Tuesday's shock 4-0 loss at MK Dons.

The injury-hit visitors - still without Marcos Rojo as the defender awaits a work permit - gradually settled, with Di Maria offering early glimpses of his talent.

A wonderful ball over the top from the Argentinian led to Robin van Persie being superbly denied by Tom Heaton, who stayed big to keep out a shot across goal.

Di Maria, who replaced Tom Cleverley in United's starting XI, then played a glorious pass on the spin during another attack that ended with Juan Mata slipping as he looked to shoot.

However, after soaking up some pressure Burnley soon threatened again, with Scott Arfield heading wide from a Jutkiewicz cross and the lively David Jones testing De Gea with a powerful half-volley.

Young saw an appeal for a spot-kick waved away before the break, having gone down under a challenge from Kieran Trippier.

The second half started slowly, but Dean Marney was forced to clear a Van Persie shot off the line in the 59th minute following more good work from Di Maria.

Van Persie nodded a Darren Fletcher cross over the bar two minutes later, while Matt Taylor should have done better at the other end as he shot tamely at De Gea.

Di Maria and Van Persie were withdrawn in quick succession thereafter and United were unable to find a breakthrough despite penning their opponents back in the closing stages, with Barnes seemingly lucky not to be penalised for blocking Young's shot with his arm.

Falcao set to depart Monaco after Lille snub

    449953_heroa.jpg

Monaco striker Radamel Falcao appears close to leaving the Ligue 1 outfit after being left out of the team to face Lille on Saturday.

Head coach Leonardo Jardim had initially named the Colombian forward in a panel of 19 to face the northern outfit and, having started last weekend's match against Nantes it was fully anticipated that he would once again feature from the outset at Stade Louis II, particularly after he scored in that clash.

Falcao, who missed the second half of last season with a serious knee problem sustained in a Coupe de France match in January, has, however, been closely linked with a move away from the principality for much of the summer.

Monaco have not reported any further physical complaints from their forward, and so it appears that this exit is likely to come in the next few days, with French media suggesting that a deal could even be completed on Saturday evening.

Several sides have been closely associated with the 28-year-old forward, including Manchester City, Juventus, Arsenal, Liverpool and Real Madrid.

While it is expected that Monaco's asking price of €65 million will be too great to tempt suitors before the end of the transfer window, it appears likely that the ex-Atletico Madrid and Porto striker will instead be shipped out on a one-year loan, expected to cost the purchasing club €20m.

Falcao's record in France reads that he has scored 13 goals in 22 matches, though he has been criticised for his failure to replicate his Atletico Madrid form in Ligue 1.

Remy set to join Chelsea, says Redknapp

    446812_heroa.jpg

QPR manager Harry Redknapp has confirmed that Loic Remy is on the verge of a move to Chelsea.

The Blues reignited their interest in the France international after reaching a deal to loan Fernando Torres to AC Milan.

Remy was not included in the Rs' squad to face Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday, which the former Tottenham boss confirmed was due to a transfer development.

Asked by Sky Sports News about Remy's situation, Redknapp explained: "I just got a phone call at about 12 o'clock today - he was going to play - to say it looks like he's going to be moving.

"I spoke to the boy. It's difficult - the deal looks like it's probably done. I had to make a change in the team.

"He didn't refuse to play, I just felt it's difficult if he's getting a move tonight and signing for another team to go out there with his head around playing today.

"I felt it's better if we go with someone who's going to be here and part of what we're doing, and got nothing else going on in his head."

When asked if Chelsea were the team close to a deal, he replied: "As far as I know, yeah."

Remy nearly joined Liverpool earlier this summer, having spent last season on loan with Newcastle, but the move broke down after reports of a failed medical.

Xabi Alonso exit shocked Real Madrid - Ancelotti

    450105_heroa.jpg

Xabi Alonso's desire to join Bayern Munich shocked Real Madrid, according to coach Carlo Ancelotti, who says nobody could talk him out of leaving.

The Spaniard joined up with Pep Guardiola at the Allianz Arena for an estimated €10 million this week, filling the void left by Toni Kroos who had gone in the opposite direction earlier in the summer.

Ancelotti admitted that the 32-year-old's transfer request was unexpected - and unwanted - but that he could understand Alonso's wishes to try out life away from the Santiago Bernabeu after five years with the club.

"Everybody at the club talked to Xabi about it," he told reporters on Saturday. "He explained it well. He said he needed another motivation.

"Clearly it was a surprise. It was all quiet here, but Xabi decided to go. We were surprised but, as I said, we respect him a lot. He was very honest with the club.

"All Madrid fans and players see him leave in high regard. It was very difficult to change his mind. Considering what Xabi has done for the club, you cannot just say: 'No, you can not go'.

"I wish him luck, I think he was a very important player last year for us to win the Champions League and Copa del Rey.

"However, we are in a very good position anyway because we have Asier Illarramendi and Toni Kroos who can be useful in that position this season."

Real Madrid travel to Real Sociedad on Sunday but will be without Uefa's newly crowned Best Player of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo, as the Italian coach confirmed he is being rested this weekend and throughout the international break.

"Ronaldo's fitness is generally good, but we have chosen this week to get him back to optimal condition in preparation for the match against Atletico Madrid and Champions League games," Ancelotti added.

"Tomorrow Ronaldo will not be part of Real Madrid's squad. "

Ancelotti attempted to distance himself from any deadline day transfers and remained vague on whether he will bring in anyone to join summer arrivals James Rodriguez, Toni Kroos and Keylor Navas.

"I cannot confirm anything transfer-wise," he continued. "The market closes Monday - something may happen, something may not happen.

"We do not need any more players, but we have a squad template which offers flexibility. Until the market closes, we cannot say whether we will sign anyone."

Radamel Falcao was left out of Monaco's matchday squad on Saturday however, suggesting that reports of a late move to Real Madrid might be on the cards after all.

Official: West Ham loan Alex Song from Barcelona

    444767_heroa.jpg

West Ham have completed the signing of Barcelona midfielder Alex Song on a season-long loan deal.

The former Arsenal star was presented to supporters at Upton Park before the Hammer's Premier League match against Southampton on Saturday.

The Cameroonian flew into London on Friday to finalise the move, having failed to solidify a first-team place during his two years at Camp Nou.

Manager Sam Allardyce wrote in the matchday programme of completing "one more high-quality signing", with Barcelona reportedly subsidising part of Song's wages for the duration of the spell.

The Cameroon international struggled for first-team minutes at Camp Nou, being afforded just 13 Liga starts last season, and is now expected to replace Mohammed Diame who is being tracked by both Hull and Everton.

Galatasaray were keen to sign the 26-year-old on a permanent deal but the former Arsenal man now becomes West Ham seventh summer signing, joining the likes of Enner Valencia, Mauro Zarate and Cheikhou Kouyate.

    West Brom announce Blanco signing

    450392_heroa.jpg

West Brom have announced the signing of winger Sebastian Blanco from Metalist for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old - capped twice by Argentina - arrives at The Hawthorns on a two-year deal, with an option to extend for a further 12 months.

Blanco's transfer was revealed just half an hour before their Premier League clash with Swansea City on Saturday and head coach Alan Irvine declared his delight at capturing the club's 11th signing of the transfer window."I'm really pleased that we've managed to add Sebastian to the squad," he told West Brom's official website. "He's an Argentina international who joined Metalist for a lot of money.

"Unfortunately, he suffered an injury not long after the move, which held up his progress."Since then, he's shown his quality. He's adept with both feet, is a nice crosser of the ball, creates chances and also scores goals.

“With the players we've brought in this summer, the squad has a much better balance thanks to the hard work of the Chairman, [director of football] Richard Garlick, [technical director] Terry Burton and the recruitment staff."Blanco, who started his professional career at Lanus in his homeland, scored six goals in 27 league appearances for Metalist last season.

He follows Craig Gardner, Joleon Lescott, Chris Baird, Sebastien Pocognoli, Brown Ideye, Andre Wisdom, Jason Davidson, Cristian Gamboa, Georgios Samaras and Silvestre Varela in joining West Brom for the new campaign.

Swansea City 3-0 West Brom: Dyer at the double for the hosts

    450433_heroa.jpg

Nathan Dyer struck twice to help Swansea City maintain their strong start to the new Premier League season with a 3-0 win over West Brom.

The 26-year-old struck his second goal of the campaign after just two minutes, while Wayne Routledge netted a sublime effort to put Swansea two ahead by half-time.

Dyer latched on to Gylfi Sigurdsson’s smart flick-on to net his second of the game with 19 minutes remaining and Garry Monk’s men now sit at the top of the Premier League having recorded three consecutive victories.

Monk spoke in the build-up about turning the Liberty Stadium into a "fortress" and there was certainly no warm welcome for West Brom.

Dyer, who scored the goal that settled last weekend's 1-0 win over Burnley, forced his way through the visitors' defence to get on the end of Sigurdsson’s backheel and put the ball in the net from a tight angle, with Jonas Olsson's slip in the box proving costly.

Wilfried Bony fired over as Swansea looked to extend their advantage, but it was a sensational improvised effort from Routledge that eventually put the hosts two up.

Sigurdsson's cross was headed by Craig Dawson to the edge of the penalty area, where Routledge managed to shape his body perfectly to get over the ball and fire a spectacular half-volley beyond Ben Foster.

It could have been three on the half-hour mark when Olsson headed against his own crossbar, before full debutant Brown Ideye's tame effort brought a simple first save of the game out of Lukasz Fabianski.

West Brom announced the signing of winger Sebastian Blanco from Metalist 30 minutes before kick-off, and Alan Irvine's men looked in need of a creative spark, despite wrestling back some possession after the interval.

Andre Wisdom was lucky to escape punishment when he appeared to block a Bony shot with his arm on the goal line.

The chance came after Dawson had been penalised for a lesser-spotted back pass – a bold, but correct, call by referee Paul Tierney on his Premier League bow.

Bony should have done better in the 69th minute when he sent the ball narrowly over the crossbar after being set up by substitute Jefferson Montero.

But the result was put beyond doubt two minutes later as Sigurdsson sent Dyer clean through on goal and the winger made no mistake in slotting the ball past Foster.

Dyer's second ended the match as a contest, but Fabianski had to be alert to deny James Morrison with a diving save before time was up.

West Ham 1-3 Southampton: Two-goal Schneiderlin turns it around

    450425_heroa.jpg

Morgan Schneiderlin scored twice as Southampton came from behind to secure Ronald Koeman's first Premier League win against West Ham.

Mark Noble opened the scoring in the first half after a period of dominance from the hosts, his shot deflected in off Maya Yoshida, but the Frenchman curled in a reply just before half-time.

The Tottenham target, whom the Saints have steadfastly refused to sell this summer, then sealed all three points with 20 minutes to go when he flicked home James Ward-Prowse's cross.
And Graziano Pelle put the icing on the cake for Southampton by tucking away the rebound after Adrian parried a Nathaniel Clyne delivery, the Italian's first league goal for the club.

Barcelona midfielder Alex Song was introduced to the home fans before kick-off, having agreed a season-long loan deal at Upton Park, but the Cameroon international saw his new side start slowly.

Southampton dominated possession and had the first sight of goal, Dusan Tadic dragging a shot wide from the edge of the box inside the opening five minutes.

West Ham still looked to be suffering a hangover from their midweek penalty shoot-out loss to third-tier Sheffield United in the League Cup but, after Ricardo Vaz Te was brilliantly denied by Fraser Forster, they took the lead against the run of play in fortuitous fashion.

Schneiderlin meekly surrendered possession in midfield and Noble was the beneficiary, picking up the loose ball before unleashing a long-range strike that took a heavy deflection off Yoshida on its way past Forster in the 27th minute.

That made it four goals for the midfielder against Southampton in their last four visits to Upton Park.

Koeman's side responded well and Pelle threatened with a header that was cleared by the well-placed Aaron Cresswell but there was no stopping Schneiderlin's effort on the stroke of half-time. The Frenchman collected a free kick unmarked at the back post and, though his initial shot was blocked by Joey O'Brien, his curling follow-up nestled into the back of the net.

Shane Long tried his luck early in the second half but was brilliantly denied by Adrian as the goalkeeper dived to his left to tip a vicious effort past the post.

The Spaniard had to be alert again in the 52nd minute to keep out Tadic's dangerous attempt, with Pelle denied by an erroneous offside flag seven minutes later after heading home Ward-Prowse's delivery.

The visitors were not to be denied, though, and Schneiderlin took advantage of West Ham's confusion as the home side debated the award of a corner, the 24-year-old tapping in Ward-Prowse's assist from close range.

Pelle grabbed the third seven minutes from time when Adrian could only parry Clyne's cross as Southampton celebrated a first league win of the campaign in style.

QPR 1-0 Sunderland: Austin goal gets Rs first win

    450431_heroa.jpg

Charlie Austin filled the void left by Chelsea-bound Loic Remy as QPR beat Sunderland to claim a first win back in the Premier League.

On the day that QPR manager Harry Redknapp confirmed striker Remy's imminent departure from the club, Austin returned from injury to score the only goal of the game.

The former Burnley man had missed the 4-0 defeat to Tottenham with a hamstring strain but produced a smart finish in first-half stoppage time to give the London club their first points since promotion back to the top flight.

Even without Remy, who was left out of the squad ahead of his move to Stamford Bridge, Redknapp's side put in their best performance of the campaign so far and could have won more comfortably had Leroy Fer's long-range shot not cannoned back off the crossbar prior to Austin's opener.

Although Sunderland initially improved after the break, in the end they did not have enough, as Gus Poyet's side struggled to carve out clear-cut chances.

Despite two opening Premier League defeats, Redknapp had received a vote of confidence from club owner Tony Fernandes in the build-up to the match, and he revealed on the eve of the game that he is in discussions to sign a new two-year deal.

He will, however, likely have to plan for the immediate future without Remy, after revealing to television reporters prior to kick-off that the France international is headed for Chelsea.

In Remy's absence, Austin was handed a start in his place. The former Burnley man almost made a near-instant impact too, when he headed just off target.

Junior Hoilett, one of the few QPR players to impress in the midweek League Cup defeat to League Two Burton, delivered an inviting corner and Austin saw his powerful header cleared off the line by Connor Wickham in the fourth minute.

Sunderland looked just as much of an attacking threat as their hosts and six minutes later, Steven Fletcher's poked effort forced Robert Green into a desperate save, following Adam Johnson's precise through ball.

Fer nearly broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark in spectacular fashion - the former Norwich man jinking away from Lee Cattermole before striking a ferocious effort from 35 yards that came crashing back off the crossbar.

But, having survived that scare, Sunderland could not hold on until the break.

In first-half stoppage time Fer knocked down a deep corner at the back post and Austin pounced, smashing the ball into the top corner.

Sunderland started the second half with renewed determination and almost scored a leveller soon after the restart.

Patrick van Aanholt's 54th-minute cross was not dealt with by the QPR defence and Santiago Vergini's left-footed strike forced Green into a smart save to his right.

Poyet's side began to enjoy more possession, but they struggled to capitalise as they lacked a cutting edge in the final third.

They did mount some late pressure - with United States striker Jozy Altidore introduced from the bench in a bid to bolster their attacking options.

But it was QPR who really should have wrapped up the win with four minutes left.

Substitute Armand Traore raced through on goal and went one-on-one with Vito Mannone, only for the wing-back to drag his right-footed effort wide of the post.
