Swansea City 3-0 Everton: Toffees well beaten in League Cup

    459914_heroa.jpg

Nathan Dyer continued his early-season goalscoring form as Swansea City defeated Everton 3-0 in the League Cup third round on Tuesday.

The diminutive winger had netted three Premier League goals in five games coming into this clash at the Liberty Stadium, and he made it four for the campaign with a composed strike in the first half.

Gylfi Sigurdsson then added a second after the interval as he reacted first to Sylvain Distin's wayward header coming back off the crossbar before substitute Marvin Emnes fired in a third with three minutes remaining.Roberto Martinez, a former player and manager at Swansea, was unable to inspire his Toffees side to a second-half comeback as they fell to back-to-back defeats following Sunday's surprise 3-2 home reverse at the hands of Crystal Palace.

For the visitors, a third game in six days was perhaps just one too many after their Europa League exploits last Thursday.Meanwhile for Swansea, winners of this competition under Michael Laudrup in 2013, victory was a welcome boost after successive defeats to Chelsea and Southampton in the Premier League as they secured their first ever win over Everton after 20 previous failed attempts.

Swans manager Garry Monk made five changes from the 1-0 defeat to Southampton at the weekend, while Everton’s side included seven alterations from their loss to Palace.Bryan Oviedo made his first appearance since breaking his leg in January, and there were full debuts for Luke Garbutt and Muhamed Besic.

Sigurdsson twice fired off-target in the opening four minutes, before Samuel Eto'o shot wide with Garbutt better placed to his left.Antolin Alcaraz, making his first start of the campaign for the visitors, was denied at close range by Gerhard Tremmel after the hosts failed to clear Garbutt's free-kick from the left in the 18th minute.

Dyer put the hosts in front 10 minutes later with a low finish at the far post after excellent work down the left by Jefferson Montero.Martinez introduced Romelu Lukaku off the bench to replace Eto'o at half-time, and the Belgium international lashed a shot over the bar within 40 seconds of the restart.

Aiden McGeady did likewise five minutes later, while Tim Howard palmed away Sigurdsson's header after yet more incisive play down the left flank by Montero.
The Iceland international was not to be denied in the 64th minute, however, as he stabbed home from close range after Distin had diverted Jonjo Shelvey's cross onto the woodwork.

Tremmel had to race from his goal to deny Lukaku 11 minutes from time, but it was Swansea who pulled further clear in the final stages as Emnes' low drive from 20 yards put the seal on their place in the fourth round.

Bayern Munich 4-0 Paderborn: Gotze at the double for brilliant Bavarians

    459908_heroa.jpg

Mario Gotze scored twice as Bayern Munich returned to winning ways with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Paderborn on Tuesday night.

Pep Guardiola's side may have been unspectacular in the opening four games of their title defence, yet Bayern never looked like losing at the Allianz Arena against Paderborn, as Gotze's double, Robert Lewandowski's half-volley and Thomas Muller's close-range finish late on secured victory and top spot in the table.

Paderborn, competing in the Bundesliga for the first time, sat top on goal difference ahead of Bayern prior to Tuesday's game after an encouraging start to the campaign, but they were well beaten by the champions.Gotze gave Bayern the lead after just eight minutes, steering home following a fine flick from Muller.

Lewandowski hit back at his critics with a 25-yard effort in the 14th minute and Gotze netted his second 12 minutes from time before Muller applied a neat finish to Arjen Robben's 85th-minute cross to end Paderborn's unbeaten start to Bundesliga life.Guardiola threatened to ban his players from celebrating Oktoberfest if they failed to beat Paderborn, but Bayern never looked like slipping up as Gotze broke the deadlock early on.

Robben, back after missing Saturday's goalless draw with Hamburg, played Muller into the area and the German forward produced a delightful backheel for Gotze , who stroked a first-time effort into the net.Gotze fired a tame effort at Lukas Kruse as he went in search of a second, but Bayern did make it 2-0 after 14 minutes.Lewandowski produced a fine first touch 25 yards out, teeing the ball up perfectly for a half-volley that Kruse failed to keep it out.

The hosts continued to attack, as Lewandowski, Gotze and David Alaba all saw chances go begging, while Idir Ouali prodded straight at Manuel Neuer on the counter-attack for Paderborn's best chance 24 minutes in.Gotze nearly added a third just before the break, as his low drive from the edge of the area deflected agonisingly wide.

Bayern started the second half in a far more relaxed fashion and that seemingly presented Paderborn with the opportunity to fight their way back into the contest.
The visitors crafted a good opening in the 58th minute as Rafinha cheaply surrendered possession and allowed Ouali to deliver a teasing cross from the left, but Xabi Alonso crucially poked it behind for a corner.

Bayern needed Neuer at his best in the 70th minute as Suleyman Koc ran at Alaba and sent a stinging effort towards the bottom-right corner.Any hope of a late comeback was ended 11 minutes from time, though, as Gotze smashed in from close range following a clever Robben run down the right.

And the Dutch winger then played a decisive role again in Bayern's fourth.
The former Chelsea man darted past his man and fired a low ball in towards the front post to allow Muller to nip in to divert past the helpless Kruse.

Real Madrid 5-1 Elche: Ronaldo hits four as Blancos go fourth

    459907_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo struck four times as Real Madrid maintained their remarkable resurgence with a 5-1 victory over Elche at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday evening.

Having scored a hat-trick in the 8-2 mauling of Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday, the Portuguese was again in imperious form as he went one better on Tuesday.
He converted two penalties on his way to a four-goal haul as Real once again produced a dazzling display.Ronaldo's night had hardly begun as he would have wished - he was at fault for the 15th-minute penalty that gave Elche a shock lead through Edu Albacar.

But a wounded Madrid - and Ronaldo in particular - rallied, with three quick goals of their own through Gareth Bale and a double from the FIFA Ballon d'Or winner to lead at the break. His third came with 10 minutes remaining before the fourth - a typically cool finish from Bale's pass - arrived in injury time, as Elche simply had no response.

After conceding eight goals in four La Liga matches, Iker Casillas was dropped in favour of Keylor Navas in goal for Real but 15 minutes into his debut the Costa Rican was picking the ball out of his net after Ronaldo had conceded a penalty.

The Portugal international was punished for making contact with Pedro Mosquera when clearing a corner and Albacar lashed the spot-kick into the top corner, giving Navas no chance despite the goalkeeper diving the right way.Elche's lead only lasted five minutes, though, as Madrid came surging back into the game with three goals in 12 minutes.

James Rodriguez created the first after 20 minutes with a pin-point cross from the left that Bale met with a glancing header, although Manu Herrera should have done better in the Elche goal as the ball slipped under his grasp.

Real went ahead for the first time eight minutes later when they were awarded a penalty of their own - Mosquera adjudged to have brought down Marcelo.Ronaldo 's emphatic spot-kick gave Herrera no chance and four minutes later the forward scored again with a perfectly placed header.Marcelo made progress down the left before firing a cross in towards Ronaldo , who outjumped Sergio Pelegrin and headed the ball into the bottom corner.Chances continued to come for the hosts but Sergio Ramos, Toni Kroos and Ronaldo were all denied by Herrera before half-time.

Both sides had early sights of goal after the break but Coro and Ronaldo were both wayward with their finishing as they blazed over the crossbar from inside the penalty area.Herrera was called into action after 66 minutes when a quick free-kick from Kroos gave Ronaldo a clear shot at goal and despite the wall collapsing in front of him, the goalkeeper made a good save with his feet.

With 10 minutes remaining, Madrid were awarded a second penalty of the match as substitute Mario Pasalic felled Ronaldo .Having dusted himself down, the 29-year-old took the spot-kick himself and once again gave Herrera no chance as he completed his hat-trick.

However, Ronaldo was not finished there and, having received a through-ball from Bale in stoppage time, he poked the ball past Herrera to secure Madrid an emphatic win.

Navas: Fans who whistle Casillas are unfaithful to Madrid

    459840_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas says supporters who whistle team-mate Iker Casillas are being "unfaithful" to the club.

The two shot-stoppers have been jostling for the No.1 spot in Carlo Ancelotti's line-up since the Costa Rica international's summer move to the Spanish capital from Levante.

Casillas was subjected to criticism from some sections of the Santiago Bernabeu crowd during a recent derby defeat to Atletico Madrid and Navas, who started Tuesday's Liga win over Elche, felt for his team-mate.

"The whistles are unfair to him because he has had a big career at Madrid," Navas told reporters.

"The thing we ask is for our supporters to encourage us. Those who whistle Casillas are unfaithful to Madrid."

Meanwhile, the 27-year-old was pleased with having finally securing a Liga start, in the 5-1 rout of Elche at the Bernabeu.

"It's very nice," he added. "It was always one of my goals to get here and play in this stadium. It is a privilege. I am happy because we won."

Torres: I would swap my goal for a win

    459891_heroa.jpg

AC Milan striker Fernando Torres says he would swap his goal against Empoli for a win.

The Rossoneri went 2-0 down after 21 minutes at the Castellani Stadium, but strikes from Torres and Keisuke Honda levelled the game.

However, they could not go on to take all three points - despite Jeremy Menez hitting the crossbar and Empoli's Mirko Valdifiori being sent off late on, meaning Pippo Inzaghi's men were forced to settle for a draw.

"I am happy for the goal, but I would gladly exchange it for three points," Torres told Milan Channel.

"The important thing for a forward is that the side creates chances to score goals. The rest doesn’t count much. We come away from Empoli disappointed, but we reacted well.

"I am trying to adapt to the needs of the team ... With great players like those at Milan, it’s easy to understand each other.

"I am happy and I am gaining in confidence. However, you can always do better."

Meanwhile, Milan coach Filippo Inzaghi said his troops paid the price for a desperately sloppy start to the game.

"I cannot explain what happened at the start of the match," said the former Italy forward.

"The team gave everything, created a lot and we have to look at it as the glass being half full.

"We have the spirit, the desire and the best attack. I will try and make everyone improve and we have to work on set-pieces. We faced an uphill start straight away, but then, the team was fantastic.

"I regret the first 30 minutes today, but my players are human and I am not able to get angry with them because they always give everything. We paid for the first half an hour."

Wenger laments 'big errors' in shock loss to Southampton

    458400_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger has blamed Arsenal's defeat to Southampton in the Carling Cup on the "big errors" committed by his players.

The Gunners took the lead through a brilliant Alexis Sanchez free-kick but saw Dusan Tadic equalise via the penalty spot before Nathaniel Clyne thumped Saints into the fourth round.

And Wenger told reporters: "I cannot fault the attitude. The reason we lost is because of our opponent's performance. It is not the players' fault.

"You have to give credit to Southampton. They are a good side and they played very well tonight.

"It's disappointing because we had a good start, but we made big errors when we had the ball. We gave a lot but it's frustrating."

In more positive news, Abou Diaby came through an hour's football unscathed and Wenger praised the midfielder, adding: "It was difficult for him but he got 60 minutes and he was not injured. He was acceptable but tired."

Arsenal face Tottenham on Saturday in the first north London derby of the season.

Ancelotti: We will see if Casillas plays on Saturday

    459818_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti says the public will have to wait and see which goalkeeper he opts to start against Villarreal on Saturday.

Debate has raged in recent weeks over which shot-stopper should be the Blancos' first-choice, with Spain international Iker Casillas and Costa Rica's World Cup hero Keylor Navas jostling for the position.

However, Ancelotti was tight-lipped when asked who would star at El Madrigal - after Casillas was dropped for Navas in Tuesday's 5-1 victory over Elche.

"On Saturday, we will see," the Italian told reporters.

"[Casillas has] played well [recently], with more balance and stability. Keylor was worked at some points, but it was quiet [for him against Elche, overall]."

The 55-year-old also talked about his policy of carefully managing his players' game time throughout the season.

"I think right now rotation is important because all the players are well-motivated," the former AC Milan boss stated.

"We have another game on Saturday and it is normal to rotate players to avoid injuries. Today [Tuesday], we rested Karim [Benzema] and [Luka] Modric and they will play on Saturday."
