Under Current ICC Rules, Muttiah Muralitharan Would Have Never Played: Mohammad Yousuf

Former Pakistan player Mohammad Yousuf feels Muttiah Muralitharan straightened his elbow well past the current allowed limit of 15 degrees but was fortunate to play top-flight cricket because at that time the ICC protocol was different

Former Pakistan captain Muhammad Yousuf on Friday said that Sri Lankan legend and world's highest wicket-taker in Test cricket Muttiah Muraliatharan would have never been allowed to play top-flight cricket had current ICC rules on chucking would have been in place during their time.

"Murali straightened his elbow well past the current allowed limit of 15 degrees but he was fortunate to play top-flight cricket because at that time the ICC protocol was different," Yousuf said on Friday.

"I played him a lot of times and I know how he exceeded the 15-degree limit. With each ball, one could see him speed up his deliveries and I told him myself 'you are lucky to be playing'," Yousuf told Geo News channel.

Virat Kohli is a great player, back him: Muttiah Muralitharan

Former Sri Lankan player Muttiah Muralitharan has said India should back Virat Kohli and not target him after one bad series. In the absence of MS Dhoni, who has been rested for the first three ODIs, Kohli will lead India and Muralitharan, who is currently the spin bowling coach of Australia, feels this will be a great learning curve for him.

"Kohli is a great player, who has performed consistently. Everyone can have a bad patch. It would be silly to target him for one bad series (in England). Rather, everyone must support him. He's one of the characters of the game. He's the future of Indian cricket. Kohli is very positive and leads in an aggressive manner. This opportunity will be a part of his learning process," Muralitharan told The Indian Express.
