Atletico Madrid 0-1 Villarreal: Vietto shocks champions

    723982_heroa.jpg

Luciano Vietto dented Atletico Madrid's title challenge with a wonderful late goal to give Villarreal a 1-0 win at the Vicente Calderon on Sunday.

The 21-year-old striker scored in the 85th minute to ensure the champions missed the opportunity to draw level on points with second-placed Barcelona in La Liga.

Vietto was given his senior debut for Argentine outfit Racing Club by current Atletico boss Diego Simeone, and came back to haunt his former manager with a well-taken goal that ended the hosts' 27-game unbeaten home run in Spain's top flight.

Atletico earlier saw a 58th-minute header from Mario Mandzukic controversially ruled out for a foul, and in-form Villarreal - who have now won four Liga matches in a row - took full advantage to climb to sixth in the table.

The shock defeat leaves Simeone's men seven points adrift of arch-rivals and Liga leaders Real Madrid.

Atletico had the first real attempt on goal after a confident start from Villarreal, with midfielder Koke firing a 30-yard effort that had Sergio Asenjo scrambling across his line in the 18th minute.

Both sides struggled to creat clear-cut opportunities, although Asenjo was called into action for the first time seven minutes before the break - with the former Atletico keeper more than up to the task after Tiago met Juanfran's low ball from the right with a first-time shot from the edge of the box.

The contest may have been lacking in chances, but there was no shortage of competitive edge.

A flurry of yellow cards preceded the half-time whistle, with several late and off-the-ball challenges, which lent to atmosphere that threatened to boil over.

Vietto appeared the most likely source of a goal for the visitors, and he went close five minutes into the second half. The forward ran at a retreating Atletico backline, and fired a 20-yard effort just wide of the post. This injected some much-needed life into the game, and Atletico suddenly warmed to their task.

First, Asenjo produced an outstanding low save to prevent Mandzukic scoring on the turn after Gabi's chipped free-kick fell to the striker's feet six yards from goal.

Then, the Croatian had the ball in the net with a back post header from Arda Turan's cross, only for it to be ruled out for a foul on Mario Gaspar.

The hosts appeared the most likely to grab a winner as Diego Godin and Tiago both wasted promising openings.

But as Simeone's men piled forward they left gaps at the back, and this allowed Vietto to use his pace to steal all three points for the visitors.

Vietto latched on to a Moi Gomez pass before showing nimble feet to wrongfoot Godin and finish smartly from the edge of the box.

Simeone: Winning Atleti lost control against Villarreal

    699372_heroa.jpg

Aletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone concedes his side’s desire to beat Villarreal on Sunday resulted in them losing control of the match.

With six minutes remaining in Sunday's La Liga clash, Luciano Vietto beat Diego Godin and slotted a calm finish beyond Miguel Angel Moya as Villarreal triumphed 1-0.

It was Atletico's first home league defeat since May 2013, ending an unbeaten sequence of 27 games.

"I think we lost the control of the game making some mistakes during the last 20 minutes just thinking about the victory,” said Simeone.

"To be honest, they made a really good counter-attack to get the goal, a nice goal from a team which worked really well.

"So, we just say congratulations to them and we have to be ready for Thursday [against L'Hospitalet in the Copa del Rey]."

Vietto, meanwhile, remains full of praise for the man who handed him his professional debut when the two were at Racing Club in Argentina.

"I am grateful to 'Cholo' for trusting me at that time," he said. "Now, I find myself at Villarreal and he at Atletico Madrid.

"Simeone will know to understand it. He trusted me. The debut as a professional is the most important and I will be thankful for the rest of my life."

Robben: I'm not the best in the world

    718412_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich attacker Arjen Robben has remained humble in the wake of Karl-Heinz Rummenigge's comments that he is the best outfield player in the world.

The Netherlands international impressed in Saturday's 4-0 Bundesliga win over Augsburg, scoring twice to take his tally for 2014-15 to 10 goals in 17 appearances in all competitions.

Nevertheless, Robben feels it might be pushing it a bit to claim he is a better player than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

"Did Rummenigge say I'm the best in the world? Well, I don't think that's right to be honest," the 30-year-old told the official Bundesliga website.

This weekend's win over Augsburg means that Bayern cannot be overhauled at the top of the Bundesliga before Christmas - yet Robben is not getting carried away just yet.

"The win over Augsburg was more important than being crowned Herbstmeister [winter champions]," he added. "We had some difficulties in the first half, so the three points are what's most important.

"We have two more games until the winter break and have to get good results in those games. We'll have a break at last after that."

Bayern hold a nine-point lead over second-placed Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga table, while they sit 15 points clear of joint numbers three Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Monchengladbach and Augsburg.

Wenger: Arsenal can't afford to lose Oxlade-Chamberlain

    681022_heroa.jpg

Arsenal are sweating over the fitness of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ahead of their clash with Liverpool at Anfield, manager Arsene Wenger has revealed.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles replaced the England international in the latter stages of the Gunners' 4-1 win over Newcastle on Saturday, with Oxlade-Chamberlain appearing to suffer a recurrence of a previous groin problem.

Arsenal have been forced to deal with something of an injury crisis this season – they currently have eight senior players sidelined – and Wenger admits that he can ill afford to lose the 21-year-old ahead of the club's busy festive schedule.

"He got a knock. He's got a pain in his groin," Wenger told reporters. "I took him off quickly. I wanted to take him off and then he takes the ball and crosses the whole pitch and [after that piece of action] he cannot run anymore.

"We cannot afford to lose him at the moment. I hope it's nothing bad. He had a little bit of inflammation before the game. I took him to Galatasaray and maybe two games [in five days] was a lot for him."

Arsenal's win over Newcastle moved them into sixth in the Premier League, two points off the top four.

Barcelona v Man City is a clash of the favourites - Puyol

    463748_heroa.jpg

Barcelona and Manchester City, who have been drawn against each other in the first knockout round of the Champions League, are two of the favourites to win the competition, according to Carles Puyol.

The two sides met each other at the same stage last term, with the Spanish side winning 4-1 on aggregate before crashing out at the quarter-final stage to eventual finalists Atletico Madrid.

The Catalan giants finished top of Group F, while Manchester City progressed as runners-up of Group E, scraping through with a 2-0 win over Roma in the last game of the first round.

Puyol feels the draw ensures that one of the strongest sides in the competition will be eliminated, but says he has faith that his former Barca team-mates will get the job done.

"There’s a long way to go to February and a lot of things can happen," he told AS. "We’ll have to wait until then, it’s going to be a clash between two of Europe’s biggest teams, two of the favourites.

"Patience and faith are needed. I have a lot of faith in my old team-mates, who are also my friends."

As well as discussing the draw, the World Cup winner talked about what he has learned off the pitch since retirement.

Puyol added: "Today we finished the sports management course and I’m really pleased to be learning and taking classes to see the other side of football.

"The truth is I’ve been very happy for many years doing what I like best. I’ve been lucky to be at the best club in the world and be able to win titles at Barcelona and with the Spanish side. I’m very happy."

    Martinez hails 'exceptional' Barkley strike

    728132_heroa.jpg

Everton manager Roberto Martinez hailed the "exceptional" finishing of Ross Barkley after the midfielder scored a wonderful individual goal in Monday's 3-1 win over QPR.

The England international traded passes with Romelu Lukaku before breaking from the centre circle and crashing a superb strike past Robert Green from 30 yards, albeit with the aide of a slight deflection.

The 21-year-old was forced into a deeper midfield role due to the absence of the suspended Gareth Barry and injured trio James McCarthy, Leon Osman and Darron Gibson, but thrived alongside Muhamed Besic as the Toffees dominated Harry Redknapp's side.

And Martinez believes both Barkley and Besic's futures are bright, though he reserved special praise for the homegrown star.

"We had a lot of time to work in training and he is developing really quickly and really well," he told reporters.

"We had to cope with four central midfielders missing today. In any squad having four players missing in the same position is a real test.

"That allowed Besic and Barkley to have a partnership that, in training, has looked very strong. They are very young but the way they played today, the future they have is immense.

"Barkley today was a real joy to see. The way he scored the first goal where he started the move, got through the QPR line and the way he finishes is quite exceptional.

"He deserves that sort of outcome because of the work that he has put in training. The way he showed that personality to get on the ball and wanting to create was very impressive."

The victory over the Rs moves Martinez's side back into the top half of the Premier League table above local rivals Liverpool, and the former Wigan boss was thrilled with the way his side performed in front of goal.

The Goodison Park outfit have scored just two goals in their last four outings, but Kevin Mirallas and Steven Naismith secured the three points against a lacklustre QPR, and Martinez feels his side's improved finishing was the difference.

"The quality in front of goal was devastating. QPR came here with a line-up that they haven’t used all season and were very organised in midfield with good legs.

"The substance of football is scoring goals and the first goal was as good as it gets. If you watch that goal again, it is a real lesson in how a midfielder can join in and execute such an incredible quality strike.

"From then on I thought they opened up a bit more and on the counterattack we had a few more options."

PSG must learn from mistakes to beat Chelsea - Marquinhos

    727162_heroa.jpg

Marquinhos is keen for Paris Saint-Germain to avoid the errors of last season when they meet Chelsea in the Champions League last 16.

PSG exited the 2013-14 Champions League at the hands of Chelsea in the quarter-finals, throwing away a 3-1 first-leg lead as the London club progressed on away goals.

Monday's draw threw up a repeat of that tie, and Brazilian defender Marquinhos is eager to ensure that the Ligue 1 champions get revenge on the Premier League leaders.

"At this level, there are only great teams," Marquinhos told PSG TV. "We will train and work hard to prepare for the two games.

"Chelsea have already won the Champions League and is at the top of their championship. They will give everything to qualify.

"The elimination suffered last season was painful. We will build on this to avoid repeating the same mistakes."And club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi expects PSG to atone for last year's disappointment.

"Chelsea is a good draw for us," Al-Khelaifi said. "I am very confident. I trust my coach and my players to show the best of Paris Saint-Germain.

"We learned a lot from the experience of last season, and we will work to have a different ending this year."

    Mancini: Inter look more dangerous

    728372_heroa.jpg

Roberto Mancini spoke of his delight at picking up his first Serie A win following his return to Inter.

The Nerazzurri beat Chievo 2-0 on Monday through goals from Mateo Kovacic and Andrea Ranocchia to bring an end to a five-game winless streak in the league.

The San Siro outfit had lost two and drawn one in Serie A under Mancini since he replaced Walter Mazzarri at the helm in November and the coach was thrilled to secure his first domestic victory over a home side who had Ruben Botta sent off late on.

"It is an important victory and it means that our confidence continues to grow," he told reporters.

"Despite the difficulties in the match, we ran out victorious and kept a clean sheet to boot. I’m satisfied.

"Right now, the 4-3-1-2 formation is a system that can come in useful. I believe that without two wingers on the outside the team is a lot more dangerous and balanced."

Mauro Icardi headed the ball down to Kovacic to slam home from close range for the opening goal and the former Manchester City boss was full of praise for the Argentine, who has now scored eight and set up two in 14 league appearances.

Mancini continued: "Chievo were very disciplined and there wasn’t much space at all. Icardi is a young guy and has bags of quality. We will work hard together and things will improve."

The 50-year-old coach also spoke highly of Fredy Guarin, Kovacic and Gary Medel.

"We want to move forward and play at a high level," said Mancini.

"Slowly but surely, we are improving at the back. The defence did extremely well today. Medel, for instance, runs his socks off and is a very important player for us.

"Guarin is an experienced player, whilst Kovacic has the potential to become a great midfielder. He is still young and must learn to defend, but he really can become a complete midfield player."

Everton 3-1 Queens Park Rangers: Toffees victory knocks Liverpool into bottom half

    728182_heroa.jpg

Ross Barkley's stunning strike set Everton on their way to a 3-1 Premier League victory as QPR's miserable away form continued on Monday.

Barkley had not scored for the Merseyside club this season, but the precocious midfielder got off the mark in style with a sublime individual strike to put Roberto Martinez's side in front just after the half-hour mark at Goodison Park.

Kevin Mirallas doubled Everton's lead with a free-kick that took a wicked deflection off Eduardo Vargas shortly before half-time.

Steven Naismith then marked his return from injury by adding a third goal with a header early in the second half, as Everton moved above neighbours Liverpool into 10th place with only their second win in seven top-flight games.

Bobby Zamora pulled a goal back with 10 minutes left, but the damage had already been done, with defeat for Harry Redknapp's side ensuring they are still without a point away from home this season.

Naismith was passed fit after missing five games due to a hamstring injury, while Barkley and Aiden McGeady were also restored to Everton starting line-up.

Vargas was employed as a central striker in the absence of QPR's leading scorer Charlie Austin through suspension, with wingers Matt Phillips and Junior Hoilett making rare starts as Redknapp opted for a change of formation.

Rangers started with confidence and Phillips had a chance to mark his recall with an early goal, but failed to control a tame shot that looped over the crossbar.

Disgruntled Everton fans soon let their frustration be known after a lacklustre start and the home side responded, with Naismith's effort striking Lukaku after Seamus Coleman cut the ball back before Mirallas cut in from the left and let fly with a well-struck shot that flashed over the bar.

Barkley then provided the urgency the home side had been lacking when he produced a moment of class to put them in front 12 minutes before the break.

The England midfielder was on the halfway line when he played a one-two with Lukaku before surging forward and unleashing a venomous left-footed strike that gave Robert Green no chance.

Everton then stunned QPR with a second goal 10 minutes later, as Mirallas' free-kick struck Vargas and a wrong-footed Green could only watch on as he was beaten once again.

Mirallas went down in the penalty area under pressure from former Everton defender Richard Dunne just after the break, but referee Neil Swarbrick waved play on.

The home side added a third goal when 53 minutes in, when McGeady stood a cross up to the back post.

Green got a hand to Naismith's goal-bound header, but could only palm the ball against Nedum Onuoha and into the net.

It was another harsh lesson on the road for the London club, but they did at least pull a goal back when Zamora was on hand to turn the ball home after Tim Howard could only palm Jordon Mutch's shot into his path 10 minutes from time.

It was too little, too late for Redknapp's side, though, and Everton substitute Samuel Eto'o nearly added further gloss to the scoreline when he hit the post in injury time.

Chievo 0-2 Inter: Mancini picks up first Serie A win

    728202_heroa.jpg

Roberto Mancini tasted victory in Serie A for the first time since his return to Inter as they beat Chievo 2-0 on Monday.

Inter had collected just one point in their first three league games under the returning head coach, but goals from Mateo Kovacic and Andrea Ranocchia ensured a much-needed win at Stadio Marc' Antonio Bentegodi.

Kovacic struck his third Serie A goal of the season after 19 minutes with a cool finish following a Mauro Icardi knock down.

Just before the hour, Ranocchia converted a Danilo D'Ambrosio cross to double Inter's advantage, before Chievo substitute Ruben Botta rounded off a miserable evening for the hosts by getting sent off just eight minutes after coming on against his parent club.

Mancini's men pushed for more goals in the closing stages but were unable to stretch their lead, with Fredy Guarin particularly wasteful in the final third.Inter move up to 11th thanks to their first Serie A win since October, while Chievo remain just above the relegation zone.

The Nerazzurri controlled the early exchanges and could have twice taken the lead as Kovacic and Rodrigo Palacio both had sights of goal, but resolute Chievo defending kept them at bay.The visitors nearly paid for their profligacy soon after, as they failed to deal with a Chievo free-kick properly and allowed Mariano Izco a free shot on goal.

Izco scuffed his effort from the edge of the penalty, but the ball looped up for Alberto Paloschi and the outstanding Samir Handanovic had to make a point-blank save to keep the forward out.Inter continued to dominate possession despite Chievo's brief resurgence, and they eventually broke the deadlock through Kovacic after 19 minutes.

Yuto Nagatomo delivered a dangerous cross to the back post for Icardi, he headed down to Kovacic and the Croatia international calmly side-footed the ball beyond Albano Bizzarri from six yards.

Chievo came close to levelling 10 minutes before the break when Riccardo Meggiorini took advantage of more slack defending from the away side, but his acrobatic volley was saved low down by Handanovic.

The opening minutes of the second half saw both sides go close, but Nagatomo screwed his shot wide and Paloschi wasted a swift Chievo counter-attack with a poor finish.

But Mancini's men put daylight between themselves and the hosts 10 minutes after the restart, as Ranocchia met a low cross from D'Ambrosio and guided the ball past Bizzarri.

Inter had further chances to add to their tally immediately after the second goal, but Icardi was unable to convert a low cross and Guarin saw a long-range free-kick easily saved.Any hopes Chievo had of getting back into the game were dealt a fatal blow with 18 minutes remaining when substitute Botta was dismissed.

The on-loan Inter midfielder received two bookings in quick succession after leading with his arm in a challenge with Zdravko Kuzmanovic before being immediately cautioned again for apparent dissent.

Bizzarri kept the score respectable in the closing minutes with good saves from Guarin and Inter substitute Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, but it mattered little as Mancini's side earned their new boss a much-needed three points.

Neuer: Bayern going into the great unknown with Shakhtar

    701182_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich will approach their Champions League round of 16 tie with Shakhtar Donetsk with caution, according to Manuel Neuer.

Five-time winners Bayern will travel to Ukraine in February for the first leg of the tie, in what will be the first ever meeting between the two clubs.

And Ballon d'Or nominee Neuer expects Shakhtar to pose a serious threat to his side's hopes of winning their second Champions League title in three years."Donetsk are the great unknowns in the last 16 so preparing for the matches won't be that easy," said the goalkeeper.

"But as always, our coaching and analysis teams will provide us with all the information we need. "I've never personally faced this team, although I played in Lviv once with Germany when we beat Portugal 1-0 at Euro 2012, so that's a good omen. "I'm definitely confident we can make the quarter-finals."

Sporting director Matthias Sammer echoed Neuer's confidence around Bayern progressing, but insisted they would not take Mircea Lucescu's team lightly.
"We don't know them," he said. "But any team that makes it through the group stage against the likes of Bilbao has the class."We respect Donetsk but intend to progress."

    Bony unhappy with Tottenham performance

    726182_heroa.jpg

Wilfried Bony admits he was unhappy with his performance in front of goal in Swansea City's 2-1 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday.

The Welsh side lost a league match at home for just the second time this season thanks to a dramatic late winner from Christian Eriksen at the Liberty Stadium.

The result was somewhat harsh on Swansea who had proved more than a match for Mauricio Pochettino's side, and they appeared on course for a point when Bony cancelled out Harry Kane's early opener.

However, Garry Monk's men were wasteful in front of goal with Bony himself the main culprit, hitting seven shots - only three of which were on target.

And the Ivory Coast international, who has eight goals in 16 appearances this term, concedes Swansea must be sharper.

"It was disappointing," he told Swansea's official website. "We created a lot of chances, especially in the first half, and we should have been more clinical. But we weren't and we paid the price.

"We tried to get the second one and kept pushing, but at the end we made a mistake and it cost us a goal. We didn't deserve to lose because we had a chance to win that game.

"I try to get in good positions to score - I had a few chances and didn't take them, so I wasn't happy.

"But we need points and wins to move up the table. We'll learn from the positives and try to be better in the next game."

Club World Cup is as big as Champions League - Pepe

    727422_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid defender Pepe claims the Club World Cup is as prestigious a competition as the Champions League.

The reigning European champions take on Cruz Azul on Tuesday in their semi-final clash in Morocco as they look to finish 2014 with another trophy.

Despite Madrid being overwhelming favourites to triumph in the tournament, Pepe insists his side will approach the clash with the utmost respect as they aim to be crowned the best in the world.

"Madrid players have a lot of quality, we all work together. We have all the ingredients for a good game and a good Club World Cup," he told a press conference.

"We'll go out on to the pitch with a lot of humility and we will respect our opponents.

"We're going to face the competition with the utmost enthusiasm. It has the same importance as the Champions League - the winner is the best club in the world.

"We want to finish the year well and bring joy to the fans.

"Because of our history, we start as favourites. We face this competition seriously."

Madrid's clash was moved to Marrakech following significant rain fall in Rabat over recent days, although Carlo Ancelotti told Goal that the club had no say in Fifa's decision.

And Pepe, who says the team were in a training session when they were told the news, is eager to see a better game as a result of the relocation.

"We were training when we heard the news. The important thing is to have a good game between the two teams," he added.

'I always beat him at Fifa!' - Messi fired up to face Aguero

    340958_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi says he is eagerly looking forward to facing Sergio Aguero when Barcelona take on Manchester City in the Champions League last 16.

The English champions were paired with Luis Enrique's side in Monday's draw for the second season in a row, with Barca emerging as 4-1 aggregate victors in last term's encounter.

Messi admits he is excited for the clash in early 2015 - especially as it will pit him against Argentina team-mate Aguero.

"Looking forward to playing in the next round of the Uefa Champions League. It'll be really nice to face my friend Sergio Aguero as I always beat him at FIFA, but let's see what happens on the pitch," he wrote on his official Facebook page.

Barca reached the knockout phase this season as winners of Group F following their 3-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain on matchday six.

City, meanwhile, went through behind Bayern Munich after their crucial 2-0 win over Roma.

Roma have been paired with Feyenoord during Monday's draw for the Europa League round of 32 in Nyon.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will face Besiktas as they aim to redeem themselves after their disappointing Champions League exit.

Other noteworthy ties include Inter's meeting with Celtic, Tottenham against Fiorentina, and Athletic Bilbao versus Torino.

Holders Sevilla were paired with Borussia Monchengladbach, while Champions League drop-outs Sporting Lisbon will meet Wolfsburg.

The first legs of the round of 32 will take place on February 19, with the returns scheduled for February 26.

Lahm: Bayern obliged to beat Shakhtar

    614351_heroa.jpg

Philipp Lahm has stressed that Bayern Munich cannot afford to underestimate Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League round of 16 - but says the quarter-final stage is their minimum objective.

The Bundesliga giants have made it to at least the last eight in each of the past three seasons and Lahm has no intention of going out at an earlier stage this time around having been paired with the Ukraine giants in Monday's draw.

"Donetsk are certainly dangerous opponents, but despite that, we have to make the next round," Lahm told the official Bayern website.

"Bayern's minimum target is always the quarter-finals."

Arjen Robben, meanwhile, was pleased to avoid Arsenal for a change, but warned Bayern should not take Shakhtar lightly.

"I think it's good we have something different and not Arsenal again..." he said.

"We'll have to watch out, they have a few really good Brazilians. We'll analyse our opponents closely and concentrate hard. If we do it should work out."

Franck Ribery is equally wary of the threat posed by Shakhtar but remains confident in his side's chances.

"It could certainly have been worse, but let's be cautious. Donetsk are strong," he added.

"However, provided we concentrate and dig deep I'm confident."

The first leg will take place in Ukraine on February 17, with the return at the Allianz Arena on March 11.

Real Madrid are beatable - Howedes

    492591_heroa.jpg

Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes insists Real Madrid are "beatable" after their Bundesliga side were paired with the holders in the Champions League last 16.

The Bundesliga side were dispatched 9-2 on aggregate by eventual winners Madrid at the same stage last season, but Howedes is determined to prove that his side have learned their lesson.

"We know how we lost badly last year. Real are one of the best teams in the world. But even these teams are beatable," he said after the draw. "We will do our best to challenge the holders."

Team-mate Joel Matip added: "Real are an awesome team. Those are two matches over 90 minutes and, in football, anything can happen. We are looking forward to it and we want to show that we learned from last year."

Striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who has impressed since joining from Mainz during the summer, is particularly keen to show his qualities against one of the continent's best teams.

"Faith wanted Schalke and Real Madrid to meet again," said the Cameroon international. "Personally, I am really looking forward to it, since they are one of the best teams in the world and I did not play against them last year. I think we will do better than last year."
