Manchester United 0-1 Southampton: Tadic winner stuns Old Trafford

    805712_heroa.jpg

Dusan Tadic was the hero as Southampton claimed their first league victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford since 1988 and strengthened their position in the top four.

Tadic slotted in the rebound from a Graziano Pelle shot that struck the post on 69 minutes to give the Saints the lead in a game United had dominated.

The hosts rallied but were unable to muster a single shot on target for the entirety of the match, with Juan Mata missing two gilt-edged opportunities to secure them a point.

Ronald Koeman - widely documented to have a frosty relationship with opposite number Louis van Gaal following disagreements during their time at Barcelona and Ajax - saw his side avenge their 2-1 defeat when the teams met at St Mary's Stadium last month.

The injury-enforced withdrawal of Toby Alderweireld was the only low point for Southampton, while Van Gaal has work to do to rediscover his side's finishing touch if they are to regain third place.

Nathaniel Clyne - back in the Saints' starting XI for the first time since Boxing Day - went close inside two minutes as he dragged a shot wide before Di Maria's inviting cross failed to find a touch from any United team-mates.

Like Clyne, Alderweireld was also returning for the visitors, having not featured in the FA Cup draw with Ipswich Town, but the Belgian was forced off injured inside 20 minutes and replaced by Florin Gardos.

While the opening half hour was largely devoid of clear-cut chances, United ended the first period on top.

Van Persie played in Di Maria with a clever looped ball, but the former Real Madrid man miscontrolled, before the Dutchman saw an effort inside the area collected by Fraser Forster following a deflection off Gardos.

A tame, wayward effort from Di Maria - starting for United for the first time since November following injury troubles - proved the final chance of a low-key half in which neither side mustered an attempt on target.

The second half continued in much the same vein as the first, with United labouring up front against a resolute Southampton back line.

Without Radamel Falcao - scorer of two of United's last five Premier League goals prior to Sunday's clash and who failed to gain a place in the matchday squad - the likes of Di Maria, Van Persie and Wayne Rooney struggled.

Chances continued to be at a premium for both sides, but crucially Southampton took theirs with the help of some calm finishing from Tadic before Juan Mata failed to make the most of two clear opportunities.

Attacking midfielder Tadic's goal - which followed up his effort in the 2-0 victory over Arsenal on New Year's Day - proved the difference as Southampton moved into third, two points clear of United, who have now won just one of their last five league matches.

Arsenal 3-0 Stoke City: Alexis stars as Gunners move above Spurs

    804812_heroa.jpg

An inspired Alexis Sanchez took his goal tally for the season to 18 as Arsenal comfortably defeated Stoke City to move within touching distance of the Premier League's top four.

The irrepressible Alexis scored his 11th and 12th Premier League goals of the season either side of half-time after setting up Laurent Koscielny's early opener at the Emirates Stadium.

David Ospina was handed a first top-flight start in Arsenal's goal as Arsene Wenger dropped Wojciech Szczesny, who was caught smoking in the dressing room after the New Year's Day loss at Southampton.

But Stoke were rarely able to get near the Colombian, let alone test him, in a game that was dominated throughout by the hosts.

It was a completely different story for Ospina's opposite number Asmir Begovic, to whom Stoke were grateful for keeping the score down as they slipped to defeat at the Emirates for a seventh successive season.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes gave a debut to Philipp Wollscheid in defence and was able to call on Bojan Krkic after the Spaniard's hamstring injury - but it was another ex-Barcelona man who stole the headlines, as Alexis lit up yet another Premier League game.

On a day full of positives for Wenger, Mesut Ozil made his long-awaited return from injury as a late replacement for Olivier Giroud.

However, Mathieu Debuchy's enforced early withdrawal with a serious-looking shoulder problem may temper the Frenchman's joy.

Stoke were served warning of Arsenal's attacking intent right from the opening whistle, with Alexis and Tomas Rosicky both forcing Begovic into fine saves.

And it was from the corner subsequent to the Czech's effort, which Begovic tipped wide, that the hosts made their pressure pay.

Alexis' initial effort was cleared, but his second was an inch-perfect cross, which an unmarked Koscielny glanced past Begovic from eight yards.

There was no let-up on the siege on Begovic's goal after the opener, with the Bosnia-Herzegovina international again called into action to deny Giroud.

But there was nothing Begovic could do to stop the outstanding Alexis shortly after the half-hour mark.

In a goal reminiscent of the onlooking Thierry Henry, the Chilean dipped in from the left wing and played a slick one-two with Rosicky before firing past Begovic at his near post.

And Alexis picked up where he left off in the second half, adding his second soon after the restart.

For once, Begovic could have done better as he allowed the 26-year-old's low free-kick to squirm beyond him into the bottom corner.

Alexis was clearly in the mood for his first Arsenal hat-trick, and went close to completing his treble with an audacious 40-yard lob that had Begovic scrambling.

Geoff Cameron saw a scrappy effort disallowed for offside and Ospina got down smartly to deny substitute Stephen Ireland and preserve a clean sheet.

But that was as good as it got in a limp display from Hughes' men, as they slumped to their almost obligatory defeat at the Emirates.

Arsenal, meanwhile, move above arch-rivals Tottenham into fifth, closing the gap to fourth-placed Southampton in the race for a Champions League spot.

Inter 3-1 Genoa: Palacio, Icardi and Vidic score in Nerazzurri victory

    804402_heroa.jpg

Roberto Mancini claimed his first home win in Serie A since returning to Inter as they beat Genoa 3-1 on Sunday.

The 50-year-old head coach had only taken one point in his previous two home fixtures, but goals from Rodrigo Palacio, Mauro Icardi and Nemanja Vidic finally gave him all three points at San Siro. Palacio opened the scoring early with a poacher's finish after Icardi's effort had been saved, with the latter heading in the second just before the break.

Armando Izzo got the visitors back into the game with five minutes remaining, the defender firing home from close range, but Vidic's first goal for Inter sealed the points for the hosts.Inter's first home win since October moves them to within two points of their opponents and fifth-placed Sampdoria.

Mancini, who gave Lukas Podolski his full debut as one of four changes, saw his side threaten inside the opening two minutes as Fredy Guarin played a through-ball for Icardi. The Argentina international escaped the attentions of Genoa's defenders on the edge of the penalty area and, although his low shot looked destined for the bottom corner, Mattia Perin did well to push it away.

Genoa were not allowing the hosts to have it all their own way, though, and after seven minutes went close to breaking the deadlock themselves, only for Samir Handanovic to deny Luca Antonelli from close range.

A frantic opening to the match was capped with a goal in the 12th minute as Palacio tapped home after compatriot Icardi's acrobatic volley had been saved by Perin.

The goal heralded a spell of dominance for the home side, who limited Genoa to rare counter-attacking moves, while Palacio spurned a presentable opportunity from 12 yards. However, Mancini's men got their second goal after 39 minutes as Icardi rose above the visitors' defence to head home Hernanes' corner from the left.

Genoa went close to halving the deficit 10 minutes into the second half as Iago Falque pounced on a loose ball 18 yards from goal, but his first-time effort was tipped wide by Handanovic.

The visitors were having their best period of the game and another three chances went begging with Andrea Bertolacci and Antonelli both firing over, before Maxime Lestienne was denied by the crossbar.Mancini found himself involved in the game more than he would have liked after 66 minutes as a clearance from substitute Zdravko Kuzmanovic struck him full in the face – knocking the coach to the floor on the touchline.

Podolski went close to his first Inter goal six minutes later with a free-kick from the edge of the penalty area, but the German forward's set-piece was deflected wide by Tomas Rincon.Inter were denied a clean sheet in the closing minutes, though, as Izzo pounced on a loose ball after Handanovic had failed to hold onto Alberto Costa's strike.

However, Inter restored their two-goal advantage two minutes later as Vidic headed home Kuzmanovic's corner to secure the points.

Roma 2-2 Lazio: Totti salvages draw for Garcia's men in entertaining derby

    805052_heroa.jpg

Francesco Totti saved Roma from a derby defeat to arch-rivals Lazio in Sunday afternoon's Serie A encounter at the Stadio Olimpico, scoring twice in the second half to bring the tie back to 2-2.

Stefano Mauri gifted the away side the lead in the 25th minute, with Felipe Anderson making it two only three minutes later. Nevertheless, the Giallorossi bounced back after the interval as Totti netted twice to restore parity.

Lazio started the match with attacking intentions and Antonio Candreva tried his luck within minutes from kick off, only to see his shot from 25 yards out go wide.

The Italy international again threatened 10 minutes later after controlling the ball on the left before cutting inside and unleashing a shot toward the far post, which went only beyond the target.

Totti then hit the wall with a free kick from a dangerous position, while Alessandro Florenzi’s shot after being set up by Daniele De Rossi was blocked.

Stefano Pioli’s men went 1-0 up halfway through the first half after Mauri beat Morgan De Sanctis after some brilliant work from Felipe Anderson down the left.

Lazio didn’t allow Roma any time to breathe and they doubled their lead shortly after the opener. Mauri turned provider this time around, with Felipe Anderson taking advantage of some disappointing goalkeeping from De Sanctis.

Juan Iturbe got a chance to peg one back for Roma around the half-hour mark, but the Argentine fired his shot high over the goal, while a second attempt in the 38th minute was blocked by a Lazio defender.

The home side started the second half in superb fashion and needed only three minutes to peg one back. Substitute Kevin Strootman set up Totti and the experienced attacker had no trouble finding the net from close range.

Iturbe then came close to levelling the scoring with a fantastic long-range strike, yet Federico Marchetti pulled off a fine save to deny the winger.

The guests kept on pushing for a third goal and Mauri was unlucky to see his shot only hit the upright, before Candreva was denied by De Sanctis.

Roma made their arch-rivals pay in the 64th minute when again Totti made it 2-2 with a sublime finish. Jose Holebas sent in a good cross toward the far post and the 38-year-old acrobatically volleyed home to restore parity.

Strootman continued to impress after coming off the bench and tried his luck with a powerful shot in the 72nd minute, only for Marchetti to collect the ball without noteworthy problems.

Miroslav Klose got a good chance for Lazio to decide the match in the closing minutes, yet De Sanctis made amends for his earlier mistake with a fine reflex.

Roma remain second in the Serie A table with 40 points from 18 games, while Lazio sit third with 31 points.

:DPhoto finish: Totti takes selfie after scoring Roma equaliser

    805232_heroa.jpg

Francesco Totti celebrated his Roma equaliser against Lazio in modern style by grabbing a phone and taking a selfie.

Lazio had taken a two-goal lead into the second half but veteran attacker Totti had given the Giallorossi hope with a strike shorttly after the break, putting in substitute Kevin Strootman's teasing pass to the back post.

However, his second goal was even more eye-catching: the 38-year-old acrobatically converted a cross from an acute angle to level the scoreline at the Stadio Olimpico with two-thirds of the game gone.

Totti celebrated by grabbing a mobile phone from a bystander and taking a selfie with jubilant Roma fans in the Curva Sud the background - proving that you can teach an old dog new tricks!

Totti revealed that, although he likes to keep his private life out of the public sphere, he had planned to take the opportunity to do a selfie to mark becoming the joint-top goalscorer in Rome derby history.

"I thought about it during the week," the ex-Italy international told Sky Sport. "There is this fashion for selfies now and I like to keep my private life to myself.

"But this was a unique opportunity that would never be repeated. It was my phone and I asked Guido Nanni to bring it to me if I scored."

The Rome derby ultimately finished 2-2, with Stefano Mauri and Felipe Anderson's goals early in the game enough to give Lazio a share of the spoils, despite Roma's comeback.

Ozil finally returns but Alexis remains king of Arsenal

    804812_heroa.jpg

The only smoke this week came from the back of Alexis Sanchez’s jet-heeled boots.

As Arsenal moved within striking distance of a place in the top four with this 3-0 victory over Stoke, Alexis took his breathtaking season to a new level on Sunday.

The build-up to this game was dominated by stories of Wojciech Szczesny’s cheeky cigarette after a defeat to Southampton in Arsenal’s last league outing. The goalkeeper paid the price as he was dropped for David Ospina.

But Ospina had so little to do he might as well have sat back, smoked a cigar and admired Alexis’ brilliance.

The Chilean scored twice and provided the assist for Arsenal’s other goal as they overtook bitter rivals Tottenham in fifth place. Every time he touched the ball, the stadium buzzed with anticipation. He is playing like a man who believes he can do anything with the ball at his feet.

In the stands sat Thierry Henry, possibly the greatest striker in Arsenal’s history.

Off the bench came Mesut Ozil, their most expensive ever signing.

Alexis, though, is the king in north London right now.

He has scored 18 goals and has nine assists to his name from 30 games in all competitions for his new club.

    805082.jpg

For many foreign arrivals, the first season in England is considered a bedding in period.

Not for Alexis, who has already gone some way to paying back the £35 million Arsenal paid to sign him from Barcelona in the summer. Still just 26, he is worth twice that now. The forward has been the best player in the country this season and will only get better.

He thrives on having the team built around him and on being given the freedom by Arsene Wenger to move all over the pitch.

Wenger has said a number of times that Alexis is playing in the ‘red zone’, taking his body to its limits and risking muscle injuries. But you wouldn’t know it from the way he plays, with more energy, drive, speed and courage than anyone on the pitch here on Sunday.

Alexis was at the heart of everything good about Arsenal. Within minutes, he forced Asmir Begovic into his first save of the day with a low curling shot that had the Stoke goalkeeper at full stretch.

In the sixth minute, he whipped in a fine cross from the left for Laurent Koscielny to powerfully head home Arsenal’s opener.

The Chilean stretched the Gunners’ lead before half time as he cut inside and fired in superbly at the near post following a sharp one-two with Tomas Rosicky.

Then, four minutes after the restart, Alexis scored his second of the afternoon and 18th of the season as he squeezed a free kick through the wall and into the net via a combination of post and goalkeeper.

He had won the free kick himself, of course. As the hosts cruised towards full time, it was still Alexis who lit up the Emirates, putting Theo Walcott through on goal only for the substitute to scuff horribly wide.

The result leaves Arsenal fifth in the Premier League table, two points ahead of Tottenham and within striking distance of Manchester United and Southampton in third and fourth.

The introduction of Ozil after three months out with damaged knee ligaments provided another welcome boost for the Gunners and the German looked tidy as he built up his match fitness.

Even when he returns to full fitness, though, Ozil will find himself as part of the supporting cast for leading man Alexis.

And with Alexis the star turn - a man who can make the difference more than anyone else in the division - Arsenal have no excuse not to move into those Champions League places with the same ease with which they won this match.

Wenger: Debuchy will be out injured for a while

    804612_heroa.jpg

Arsenal full-back Mathieu Debuchy is facing an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a dislocated shoulder against Stoke City, Arsene Wenger has confirmed.

The 29-year-old was carried off on a stretcher just 13 minutes into Arsenal's 3-0 Premier League victory on Sunday after a coming together with Stoke forward Marko Arnautovic and the Frenchman was sent crashing into the advertisement boards behind David Ospina's goal.

And Gunners boss Arsene Wenger confirmed that Debuchy - who spent nearly three months out of action earlier this season after ankle surgery - sustained a dislocated shoulder in the incident and therefore faces another lengthy lay-off."It's dislocated so will take a while," said the Frenchman. "He will have to see a specialist."

In more positive news for Wenger, Sunday's game heralded the long-awaited return of Mesut Ozil.Arsenal's record signing - who had not played since October due to a knee problem - came on as a late substitute at the Emirates Stadium.

Wenger said that while Ozil is now ready to play, it will take the German up to three weeks to regain full match sharpness."He lacks match fitness but he's fit physically," he added. "He'll be back fully in two to three weeks."

Arsenal were superb throughout Sunday's game, with Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic making a number of fine saves to keep the score down to 3-0.The pattern of the match was in stark contrast to the reverse fixture last month, when Stoke raced out of the blocks and went in at half-time three goals to the good.

This time around it was Arsenal who made all the early running, with Laurent Koscielny heading them in front after just six minutes before the outstanding Alexis Sanchez scored either side of the break. And Wenger was thrilled with the way his team had learned their lesson from the Britannia Stadium.

"We missed the start of the game at Stoke and paid for it," he added. "This time we put them on the back foot."

Oxlade-Chamberlain hails 'star of the show' Alexis Sanchez

    804812_heroa.jpg

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has praised Alexis Sanchez’s "amazing" quality after the Chilean inspired Arsenal to a 3-0 victory over Stoke City on Sunday.

Alexis set up the opening goal for Laurent Koscielny on six minutes before striking twice himself to take his goal tally to 18 in all competitions and seal a deserved win for Arsene Wenger's men.

With 12 goals and seven assists, the Chilean has now been directly involved in over half of Arsenal's 37 Premier League goals this season and Oxlade-Chamberlain has no doubts about his team-mate's talent.

"Alexis is amazing. He shows it week in week out and that's the most important thing for top players to do," Oxlade-Chamberlain told Sky Sports.

"It's about consistency and it's not good enough to just be good one week, everyone wants to see you being great every week.

"Alexis has done that all the way through the season. He was brilliant again today with two good goals and obviously he set Laurent's goal up as well. Hopefully it continues for him because he's having a great season.

"His confidence is brimming and it helps the team as well. It was another great performance from him. There were a lot of good performances out there today but he's the star of the show."

Pellegrini: Struggling Mangala could do a Demichelis

    800872_heroa.jpg

Manuel Pellegrini believes struggling Eliaquim Mangala can follow the lead of Martin Demichelis and establish himself as a key man at Manchester City.

France international Mangala joined the Premier League champions from Porto in August for a fee reported to be in the region of €40 million.

Despite an impressive debut in a 1-1 draw against title rivals Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium in September, a number of high-profile errors have affected the 23-year-old's confidence as he adapts to life in England's top flight.

Having turned in an initially commanding display in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Everton, Mangala endured a torrid time under pressure from home striker Romelu Lukaku.
Injuries have restricted City captain Vincent Kompany to a solitary appearance since November, meaning Mangala has regularly been paired with Demichelis – a player who suffered a similarly fraught introduction to life in Manchester, before becoming a pivotal figure in last season's dramatic title run-in.

"I always analyse individual performances with the players," Pellegrini said, having watched Steven Naismith cancel out Fernandinho's 74th-minute opener at Goodison Park."I hope that he will repeat what Demichelis did last year. He improved and he was a very important player."

Saturday's result means City are two points behind Chelsea at the Premier League summit once more.Pellegrini's men were unable to make a dominant first-half display count as a more even contest developed after half-time, meaning the sight of top scorer Sergio Aguero returning from the bench on Merseyside following a five-week knee injury was a welcome one.

"Sergio worked two or three days with the squad this week," Pellegrini added.
"Now he has the whole week to continue working, so I hope he will return in a few days to the same performance he had before he was injured."

'Arsenal are the club of my heart' - Sissoko

    537141_heroa.jpg

Moussa Sissoko has admitted he intends to leave Newcastle for a bigger club in future and hopes Arsenal come calling.

The France international has impressed at St James' Park this season, prompting the club to issue a 'hands-off' warning amid reported interest from Arsene Wenger and Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.

Sissoko underlined his commitment to Newcastle earlier in the week but has now revealed his plans to leave the club in the future as he looks to win the Champions League, preferably with favoured team Arsenal.

"The transfer market is open, so things can happen any day, but I am focused on Newcastle," he told Telefoot. "If anything should happen, it will. I hope I'll leave for a bigger club one day, but I don’t know when.

"England is my priority. If Wenger calls, I'll have a man-to-man discussion with him and then we'll see. Arsenal has always been the club of my heart.

"I hope I'll improve to win the Champions League one day. I don't want to set limits to myself. I want to go higher. That's my goal."

PSG boss Laurent Blanc has already ruled out a potential January move for Sissoko.

This AC Milan team lack courage - Inzaghi

    803002_heroa.jpg

AC Milan coach Filippo Inzaghi said his team lacked courage and dropped too deep in Saturday's 1-1 Serie A draw at Torino.

Milan took the lead through a Jeremy Menez penalty after three minutes at the Stadio Olimpico but were reduced to 10 men on the stroke of half-time when Mattia De Sciglio received a second yellow card.

Inzaghi's side were outplayed for much of the match and conceded an 81st-minute equaliser when defender Kamil Glik headed in from a corner.

“The big mistake was that we went too deep," Inzaghi told Sky Italia. "The strategy was to put three forwards on three defenders and it went well until a certain point."We must have courage because we are Milan, but when this team runs into difficulty it lacks confidence. It’s up to me to improve that."This side lacks some character and belief, as once they go in front they ought to gain confidence, but instead tend to get nervous."

The draw leaves Milan in seventh place, four points off the Champions League qualifying places, and Inzaghi admitted he was not currently thinking about a third-placed finish.

“We must not talk about this anymore,” he said. “We have to focus on playing, improving and getting more character into the team when we go in front."The former Milan striker did have some praise for his team, who showed some battling qualities after De Sciglio was sent off.

The 41-year-old said: “If it weren’t for a late corner, we would’ve won a game with 10 men and that would be a great achievement."I brought on Alex because I saw we were struggling in the air, but straight after putting on our best header of the ball we conceded from a corner again. We have to do something about that.

"We could have done better when it was eleven against eleven. We held out as well as we could with 10 men.”Milan have only won two of their nine league games on the road this season.
