Juventus 1-2 Fiorentina: Stunning Salah double gives Viola vital victory

    1045212_heroa.jpg

Chelsea loanee Mohamed Salah scored both goals as Fiorentina beat Juventus 2-1 in Thursday's Coppa Italia semi-final first leg.

The Egypt international has hit the ground running since arriving on loan from Chelsea during the transfer window and netted a brace to hand Fiorentina the advantage heading into the second leg in Florence next month.

Salah opened the scoring in the 11th minute when, following a period of Juve dominance, he broke clear to send a left-footed effort beyond goalkeeper Marco Storari.

Fernando Llorente pulled Juve level with a headed effort, but Salah was on target again after the break – again 11 minutes into the half – to condemn the hosts to their first defeat in normal time since October.Salah has now netted six goals in seven appearances in all competitions, having made just four starts.

Only four players kept their place in the Juventus starting XI following a 1-1 Serie A draw at Roma on Monday, and one of those men, Arturo Vidal, proved to be a nuisance for the Fiorentina defence from the off - blasting over with little more than a minute on the clock, before side-footing wide of the right-hand post moments later.

Fiorentina also made seven changes from their last league outing and, after Jasmin Kurtic drilled wide from the visitors' first chance, Salah shook off Simone Padoin as he surged forwards to guide a shot past Storari from the left side of the six-yard box. That lead lasted just 13 minutes, though, as Llorente rose highest to head in a Simone Pepe cross off the left-hand upright – just his second goal of 2015.

Matias Fernandez stung the palms of Storari from 25 yards out on the half-hour mark, and Fiorentina should have re-taken the lead soon after when Jose Maria Basanta sent a close-range header against the post after Mario Gomez had scuffed an effort.Vidal ended the half as he had started it, causing problems for the visiting defence, but was unable to find the target as he headed narrowly wide.

Fiorentina applied the pressure at the beginning of the second half, with Micah Richards testing Storari at his near post, before Salah again forced his way through the home defence and applied a smart finish to put his side back in front.Juve appeared to wake up with half an hour to play, but struggled to turn possession into meaningful goalscoring opportunities.

In fact, it was Fiorentina substitute Josip Ilicic who next came close to finding the net when he drilled wide in the 71st minute, before Roberto Pereyra squandered a glorious opportunity to restore parity by glancing off-target from a central position with 10 minutes left to play.

The visitors held out for an important win in their bid to win this tournament for the first time since 2001, while Juve - who have not won the cup for 20 years - will need to up their game for the return leg in April.

    'Fiorentina already rely on Salah'

    1045222_heroa.jpg

Fiorentina sporting director Daniele Prade says Mohamed Salah has already become a pivotal figure at the club since his January loan move from Chelsea.

The Egypt international joined Vincenzo Montella's side on a temporary basis as part of the deal taking Juan Cuadrado to Stamford Bridge and has made a flying start to life in Italy.

Following his match-winning performance in the 2-1 Coppa Italia victory over Juventus on Thursday , which included an incredible 70-yard solo goal, Prade has voiced his delight with how the deal has worked out on every level."Salah is a strong player who is giving us great satisfaction," he told Rai .

"He has immediately settled into the squad and already the team relies on him. He scored an incredible goal running for 70 metres. It was like when you were a kid, putting a cross forward for yourself and then running on to it."Up until January 27 Cuadrado had a buy-out clause. At that moment we had to find an alternative, Chelsea had this strong player, we did well to choose and sign him.

"The move is our biggest economic move of January, but also our best one on a technical level."The squad has put itself at Salah’s disposal and he is working for the team, so they are getting the best out of each other."

Fiorentina's next game is a vital clash against Lazio in Serie A on Monday as both teams look to keep up the pressure on Napoli in the race for third place and a Champions League spot.

Time to forget about Copa del Rey final - Iniesta

    1040572_heroa.jpg

Barcelona star Andres Iniesta has told his team-mates that they must forget about the Copa del Rey until the final and focus on La Liga and the Champions League.

Barring losses to Real Sociedad and Malaga, the Catalans have been in supreme form since the turn of the year and they currently sit two points behind Real Madrid in the Primera Division, while they hold a 2-1 first-leg lead over Manchester City in the Champions League last 16.

Iniesta is delighted with their run of results and is hoping Barca can improve their chances of winning a treble in the weeks ahead."We are in great form and extremely happy," he said to Marca.

"But now we are going to put the final to one side and focus on the other two competitions we are in."Reaching a final is reason enough to be proud. Now we want to finish the job at hand. When you are in a good moment you have to try and make it last even longer. We are in a good place, but we can't stop now.

"It is a fine line between moving forward and standing still, so we will just think about what is next and that is the game against Rayo. Then we will think about what comes after that."

Barca's next game is at home to Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

Pogba's poor form is down to fatigue, says Allegri

    1045152_heroa.jpg

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri has insisted that Paul Pogba's dip in form is purely down to fatigue.

The Frenchman has looked out of sorts in recent weeks and was far from his best during Thursday's 2-1 Coppa Italia semi-final first-leg loss to Fiorentina in Turin.
However, Allegri says he has already talked to the former Manchester United man about his form and has stressed he is not overly worried about the situation.

"Any player involved in over 40-50 games per season will have moments of fatigue, let alone a 22-year-old who has a lot to learn on how to control games and pace himself throughout 90 minutes," the coach told reporters.

"I always tell him technique is not enough, he needs to put in a certain type of performance."Youngsters are going to have peaks and troughs, as Alvaro Morata did, on their way to maturity."

The former AC Milan boss went on to admit that Vincenzo Montella's side were worthy winners on the night even though his side did have chances to level the game and make it 2-2."We knew Fiorentina were in fine form and I would say it was a good first half from both teams," said Allegri.

“After the break we lost organisation for about 10 minutes, allowing them two or three chances and conceded on the third. We had opportunities to equalise, but Fiorentina played better than we did and deserved to win."

Allegri called on his side to turn the tie around in the second leg as Juve continue to battle on three fronts with the season reaching its key period.“There is the second leg and we will try to turn things around," he said.

"We are aware it won’t be easy because Fiorentina are in great form and play very good football but we conceded one goal with a man who ran 70 metres with the ball at his feet. That is not a tactical issue.

“This result must make us think and focus on the next game. The Serie A season is not over, despite what many people seem to say. Europe is a dream and we have got the second leg at Borussia Dortmund, then the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final.”

Salah's impact even better than we expected - Montella

    1045012_heroa.jpg

Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Montella says Mohamed Salah's impact has been even better than expected and feels his side have more options following the exit of Juan Cuadrado to Chelsea. The Colombian sealed a €31 million move to Stamford Bridge in January, with Salah going to the Artemio Franchi on loan as part of the same deal.

The Viola boss is delighted with how his troops have responded to the loss of their star man and again praised his players after Salah's brilliant double gave them a 2-1 Coppa Italia semi-final first-leg win against Juventus in Turin.

When asked whether he has more tactical options now that Cuadrado left, Montella told Rai : "Yes, to a degree. The whole team is growing, not just Salah, though he is scoring a lot of goals.

"Salah is in a state of grace and we hope he can continue. He has settled in very well. We knew that he was strong, but honestly his immediate impact has gone beyond expectations.

"The team has been consistent since November to December. We have a squad with many alternatives and the January transfer window gave me some other options to choose from.

"The team is confident and aware of what it can do, but also is staying humble. We have reached a certain level of maturity and after some time together, the players understand me and I understand them."It was a great performance, starting from the strikers, who also worked well in defence. They all knew we could only achieve the result with sacrifice.

"I knew Juventus wanted to reach the final and expect an equally tough second leg. In the first half we were a bit passive. We showed a lot more courage after the break and that is when the winner arrived."

Montella's men, who have not suffered a defeat for 13 matches in all competitions, face an away league trip to play Lazio on Monday before they meet Serie A rivals Roma in the last-16 of the Europa League.

Champions League win my career highlight - Kroos

    965432_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid star Toni Kroos says winning the Champions League with Bayern Munich in 2013 remains the highlight of his career.

The Germany international was part of Jupp Heynckes' treble-winning team two years ago, but missed the 2-1 European Cup final win over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley due to an injury.

However, he still ranks receiving a winner's medal in the competition over every other moment in his career, with any of the clubs he has represented."This competition is always brilliant, especially when you reach the knockout stages," he told Uefa.

"At this point, the games are tight and you meet the best teams in Europe. The greatest challenge is to show what you can do season in, season out in the competition."Of course, the highlight of my career at this level was winning the tournament with Bayern and I will try to repeat that success with Madrid."

Kroos went on to say that he has been thoroughly enjoying life at the Bernabeu since his summer move from Bavaria and has set his sights on success."It has been a good start for me," said the midfielder."I have been here a while now and it has gone well from the off.

"For the time being, we are first in our league and still in the race for the Champions League. I hope we will be successful. As far as I am concerned, I hope to contribute to that success."

Evans and Papiss Cisse both charged by FA over spitting incident

Papiss Cisse and Jonny Evans have both been charged by the Football Association over the spitting incident in Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Newcastle on Wednesday evening.

The two men clashed towards the end of the first half at St James' Park after Evans had tackled Cisse and TV images appear to show the Northern Ireland international spit at the Newcastle striker, who then responds in kind.

Earlier on Thursday Evans released a statement insisting he was "shocked" by the accusations of spitting, while Cisse publicly apologised for reacting to something he described as "very unpleasant".

A three-man panel of former elite referees reviewed footage of the incident and unanimously concluded that both men were guilty of a red card offence.

An FA statement read: “The charges are in relation to an alleged breach of FA Rule E1[a] in that in or around the 38th minute of the game the two players spat at each other.

“The incidents were not seen by the match officials but caught on video. Both players have until 6pm on Friday 6 March 2015 to respond to the charge.”

Podolski could return to Arsenal, says agent

    900822_heroa.jpg

Lukas Podolski's agent has talked up the possibility of a return to Arsenal or a potential move to Turkey when the forward's loan at Inter comes to an end.

The Germany international has yet to find the net for Inter since joining from Arsenal on a deal until the end of the season in January and there is no agreement in place for him to move to San Siro on a permanent basis."Anything could happen," Podolski's representative Ali Pektas told Fanatik.

"For the moment he's on loan at Inter, and when it ends at the end of the season he could return to Arsenal, where he still has a year on his contract."With regard to his future, all I can say is that anything could happen, even a transfer to Turkey. Why not?

"Last summer he could have moved to Galatasaray, but it never materialised. Every summer Lukas and I go on holiday to Turkey."He appreciates it [Turkish football] a lot, and he wants to keep playing at a high level."

Podolski has made nine appearances for Inter so far, but has yet to find the net for the Giuseppe Meazza outfit. The 29-year-old's contract with Arsenal runs until June 2016.

Luis Suarez is set to return to Anfield after agreeing to take part in a charity game to mark Steven Gerrard's upcoming Liverpool departure at the end of the season.

The Uruguay international, who scored 82 goals in 133 games for Liverpool before leaving for Barcelona in a move worth €88 million last July, is one of a host of marquee names to sign up for the event.

Other Liverpool icons such as Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres, Pepe Reina and Dirk Kuyt will be joined by the likes of Thierry Henry, Didier Drogba and John Terry.

Current Liverpool players who are not on international duty will also take part in the game, with the two teams to be skippered by Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.

All proceeds from the match will go to charities in the local community.

    Guardiola warns vengeful Ribery

    1041702_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has warned Franck Ribery to control his temper after the winger's vengeful reaction toward Eintracht Braunschweig defender Benjamin Kessel in Wednesday's 2-0 DFB Pokal win.

The former France international kicked out at Kessel after a strong challenge from the Eintracht man and was fortunate to escape a red card for his action.

Guardiola was not impressed with Ribery's behaviour, and has told the winger a repeat will not be tolerated."It is incredibly dangerous when you end up playing with 10 against 11 in the Champions League. This will not happen again...," Guardiola was quoted as saying by Sport Bild when questioned about Ribery's action.

"A game like Wednesday's one is like a final. We have to control ourselves."The Frenchman himself, meanwhile, feels his reaction did not cross the line.

"He tackled me with two legs forward. This could have been dangerous for me," Ribery explained.

"Everything is alright, though. This is all part of the game. My intention wasn't bad when I tackled him."

Papiss Cisse issues apology after Evans spit row

    1044102_heroa.jpg

Papiss Cisse has issued an apology after television replays appeared to show the Newcastle striker spitting at Manchester United defender Jonny Evans during Wednesday's Premier League encounter.

The two men clashed towards the end of the first half at St James' Park after Evans had tackled Cisse and TV images appear to show the Northern Ireland international spit at the Newcastle striker, who then responds in kind.

And while he insists he was reacting to something "very unpleasant" - though Evans has issued a separate statement denying the spitting accusations - Cisse admits there is no excuse for his actions.

"I have apologies to make to a lot of people today. Firstly to my teammates and to our supporters, secondly to Jonny Evans, and thirdly to every football fan who saw the incident between myself and Jonny,” the Senegal international told Newcastle’s official website.

"I reacted to something I found very unpleasant. Sometimes it is hard not to react, particularly in the heat of the moment. I have always tried hard to be positive a role model, especially for our young fans, and yesterday I let you down.

"I hope children out there playing football for their clubs and schools this weekend will know better than to retaliate when they are angry. Perhaps when they see the problem it now causes me and my team they will be able to learn from my mistake, not copy it."

Goal understands the Football Association expects to reach a decision over whether to charge Evans and Cisse by Friday, and the contrasting statements of the two men will have no bearing on the judgement of the panel.

Lacazette: Lyon may sell for right price

    1043412_heroa.jpg

Olympique Lyonnais forward Alexandre Lacazette believes club will happily cash in on him at the end of the season if the right offer comes along.

Lacazette was heavily linked with a move away from the Stade de Gerland before the start of the season and after scoring 25 goals so far in a campaign in which he missed almost a month due to a recent thigh injury, the attacker is likely to be a hot commodity again, with Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool all said to be keen on the France international."Last year, when I was being talked about regarding a possible transfer. That worried me because I struggled to deal with all the speculation, which was coming from all sides," Lacazette told OL TV.

"My aim is now to do my best this season and at the end of the season we shall see. "I know that several clubs are watching me, but I will think about whether I want to leave or stay later on and then we shall see.

"At the moment I cannot say if I am staying or not, because if a club puts a certain amount of millions of euros on the table, the president will probably tell me to leave."

The 23-year-old has a contract with the Ligue 1 leaders until June 2018.

Tottenham have no interest in Bacca, insists Pochettino

    988992_heroa.jpg

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino denies that his side have any interest in Sevilla striker Carlos Bacca.

With Emmanuel Adebayor out of favour and Roberto Soldado showing no signs of adapting to English football, Spurs lack a viable alternative to Harry Kane, who himself has scored just once in his last five games.

Colombia international Bacca has scored 17 goals this season for the Europa League holders and has been linked with a summer move to White Hart Lane, despite having signed a new contract earlier this season, but Pochettino claims that he has no interest in his fellow South American.

"I hear about this player in the media but I know him as I follow the Spanish league. [There is] no interest," he told talkSPORT.

Tottenham kept up with their rivals for a top-four place in the Premier League on Wednesday, bouncing back from their League Cup final disappointment with a 3-2 win over Swansea City.

Ibrahimovic won't retire at PSG, says Raiola

    913132_heroa.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's agent, Mino Raiola, believes the striker is likely to leave Paris Saint-Germain before he hangs up his boots.

The Sweden international moved to the Parc des Princes in 2012 and led the capital club to back-to-back Ligue 1 titles in his first two seasons, with the champions just one point behind Lyon at the top of the table as they look to make it three-in-a-row this year.

His representative feels the former Barcelona and Inter attacker will keep on playing until he is well into his 40s but suggested the full duration of that time will not be spent in France.

"Zlatan still has a year and a half on his contract," Raiola told RMC."He is happy in Paris, he tries to do his best and is in good shape, though he had some problems this year.

"But for Zlatan the future is short. I don't know if he can finish his career at PSG. He worked for himself for 15 years, now he will work for me for the next eight years. I think he can play until he is 42 or 43 but I don't know if he will play another eight years at PSG."

Raiola also said he is desperate for Ibrahimovic to win the Champions League during whatever time he has left in Paris, with the last-16 second leg against Chelsea coming up next week after Laurent Blanc's side drew 1-1 at home.

"I hope he wins the Champions League for his sake, for PSG and for French football," he said.

"It is a matter of luck too as it is not always the best team who wins."Zlatan told me the first-leg game against Chelsea was perfect. It was a perfectly prepared game. There is a lot of respect between Laurent Blanc and Ibra. I can tell he likes Blanc."

Raiola, who also handles the affairs of the likes of Paul Pogba, insisted Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani do have a good working relationship, despite rumours to the contrary.

He added: "The problems don't exist. It is just a good story. Zlatan is PSG's leader, he respects Cavani and Cavani respects him."

Van Gaal: Manchester United in top-four rat race

    1019692_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal believes Manchester United are in a "rat race" to qualify for the Champions League.

Ashley Young's late goal saw the Red Devils win 1-0 win Newcastle United on Wednesday to help United keep pace with the rest of the top-four contenders.

Including Southampton's victory over Crystal Palace on Tuesday, every team in the top seven of the Premier League won during the midweek round of fixtures and Van Gaal praised his players' spirit during after securing such a vital late victory.

"I said in the dressing room that I was very pleased with the performance," he told reporters. "This is a difficult ground to win. We dominated the game.

"When you don't do that, you can end up with a negative result. It could have been because David de Gea made two fantastic saves. But, I have to say, Tim Krul did also.

"We have waited a long time for the winning goal but it shows the fighting spirit of our team again. I have said that a lot. For me, it was very important to win.

"All our competitors in our rat race [for the top four] have won too."

Cisse set for seven-game ban after accepting spitting charge

    1042312_heroa.jpg

Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse has accepted an FA charge relating to a spitting incident with Jonny Evans during his side's 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at St James' Park on Wednesday.

The two men clashed towards the end of the first half at St James' Park after Evans had tackled Cisse and TV images appear to show the Northern Irishman spit at the Newcastle striker, who then responds in kind.

A three-man panel of former elite referees reviewed footage of the incident and unanimously concluded that both men were guilty of a red card offence earlier on Thursday.

Goal understands Cisse will now face a seven-game ban after accepting the charge as it would class as his second red card of the season, ruling him out of action until May.

Evans, meanwhile, would face a six-game ban if he accepts or is found guilty of the charge.
