Khedira wants to join Schalke - chairman

    1068752_heroa.jpg

Schalke chairman Clemens Tonnies says Sami Khedira would not hesitate to join the Bundesliga club this summer.

The midfielder's contract expires at Real Madrid expires at the end of the season, meaning he is free to speak with other clubs, and the Germany international has been heavily linked to a return to the Bundesliga.

Indeed, despite alleged interest from Premier League sides such as Arsenal and Chelsea, Tonnies feels that the former Stuttgart star is edging towards a move to Gelsenkirchen."I get the impression that Khedira wants to return to the Bundesliga," he told Bild. "I think he doesn't doubt it for a second. I believe that there aren't too many clubs in Germany coming into question.

"He would easily fit in here. He is a leader, a fighter. But it's also a fact that we won't go crazy about it."

The Schalke chief's comments come just days after Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer said that the 27-year-old Khedira is not good enough for them.

Chelsea awarded an 'abnormally low' amount of penalties

    1073922_heroa.jpg

Chelsea have highlighted the lack of penalties they have been awarded this season in an article – entitled “Penalty puzzle” – posted on their official website.

The Blues note that Premier League referees have awarded the club just two spot-kicks in 2014-15, with both coming after fouls on winger Eden Hazard – in games against Arsenal and QPR.

Chelsea claim that “historically, this figure seems abnormally low”.

Jose Mourinho has repeatedly rallied against perceived injustices this season, first claiming that his side were the victim of a “campaign” – for which he was fined – before criticising the match officials after his side’s 1-1 draw with Burnley in February, during which Nemanja Matic was sent off despite being the victim of a poor tackle from Ashley Barnes.

Chelsea were awarded a penalty in their 2-2 draw with Paris Saint-Germain last week, but the club claim that the decision is simply evidence of a discrepancy in quality between Champions League officials and Premier League referees.

"We were of course the recipient of a spot-kick in our last European encounter, when PSG's Thiago Silva obviously handled in the area, but Champions League referees have spotted penalty incidents throughout, with four also given our way in the group stage,” the article reads.

"It is in our 28 Premier League games this season where we have been awarded just two penalties. Both were for infringements on the league's most-fouled player, Eden Hazard, and both were in home London derbies, against Arsenal and QPR respectively. The most recent was four-and-a-half months ago.”

Chelsea also note the number of penalties they have been awarded in recent seasons, ranging from five in 2011-12 to 11 in 2012-13, and also insist that referees have ignored potential penalty calls since their opening league game against Burnley in August.

“This season’s tally of two unquestionably bucks the recent trend yet our position as clear league leaders and second-highest scorers suggests we can’t be labelled anything other than an attacking side, spending plenty of time in the opposition box,” the article continues.

“Our two closest challengers in the Premier League this season, Manchester City and Arsenal, have both been awarded seven penalties – the most in the division. City have only scored one goal more than Chelsea and Arsenal two less.

"Last term, the two teams that finished above us in the league – Man City and Liverpool – were awarded more penalties than any other team bar us.

“From the first half of our very first league game, at Burnley, a number of key penalty-box decisions have not gone our way, Diego Costa the victim that evening after being felled trying to round the keeper. He should have been awarded Shed End penalties against Liverpool and PSG recently, too.”

Benitez: Napoli are ready for dangerous Dinamo

    1098992_heroa.jpg

Rafael Benitez says that Napoli will go on the offensive in Thursday's Europa League last-16 tie with the "dangerous" Dinamo Moscow. The Italian side travel to Russia holding a 3-1 lead from last weekend's encounter at the San Paolo.

However, while Benitez acknowledges that Dinamo are a formidable side on home soil, he is confident that Napoli will progress to the quarter-finals."We won the first leg 3-1 but that does not mean that we will be defensive in Moscow," he told reporters. "We are going there to win, we will not change our style, that is our mentality in every game.

"There are so many players of Dinamo that should not be underestimated. We were sloppy in defence in the last game and we were punished with the goal; this time we will be more focused and will be more intense.

"We have analysed their games, they have good players and they won their group, they are dangerous. It will be a hard game as we are up against a team that is unbeaten at home and that thus far has been perfect in Europe.
"Another goal's advantage would help us but we can still do it."

Ozil rules out Bundesliga return: I'm really happy at Arsenal

    899882_heroa.jpg

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has revealed that he has no plans to return to the Bundesliga, insisting that he is happy at the Emirates.

The 26-year-old had been linked with a move to Bayern Munich at the start of the season after being criticised for a lack of impact during his debut season in the Premier League following his 2013 move from Liga outfit Real Madrid.

But Ozil maintains he has no plans to return to Germany and is enjoying playing in the “strongest league in the world”.

“A return to Germany is not an option for me right now. I am really happy at Arsenal and I want this to continue,“ Ozil told Express.

“I played in the Bundesliga and at Real Madrid. But the English Premier League is the strongest league in the world. Opponents never give up.

"Even if we're 3-0 in front with Arsenal, the players never give up and fight until the very last second. You can only succeed here when you're on top level physically.“

Ozil has also hit back at critics who have questioned his discipline and insists he his striving to improve his performances under Arsene Wenger.

"I don't need to prove them anything. But it is correct that I have to work harder to reach my goals,” said the midfielder.

“That's why I'm working as hard as I never worked before in my life. My body is more stable and I feel fresher. You need that in England."

Mancini: Inter can come back and beat Wolfsburg

    970452_heroa.jpg

Roberto Mancini believes his Inter team can reverse their 3-1 deficit against Wolfsburg in the Europa League and progress to the quarter-finals.

A double from Kevin De Bruyne and a Naldo goal cancelled out an early Rodrigo Palacio opener as the Bundesliga side took the advantage in the tie.Despite Inter having failed to win any of their last four games, Mancini insists anything can happen and his side are due a run of good luck.

"I'm always optimistic," he told reporters. "We have to go for it, we'll need a big night. We need to use our heads and not be too hurried because goals can come at any time.

"The players need to relax, anything can happen in 90 minutes. We need to play well and be lucky."I was gutted for the lads on Sunday after the draw with Cesena, but the only way to improve is through hard work.

"I believe in us. In all the cups Inter have won there were sensational comebacks and an evening without mistakes - sooner or later that has to happen."The 50-year-old has hailed Mateo Kovacic as the man to make the difference for his side and revealed that Xherdan Shaqiri could feature for the Nerazzurri.

"I hope it can be a big night for Kovacic. He's young and that would help him. We'll assess Shaqiri shortly. He's doing alright but we don't want to take any risks."

The Italian coach also touched on his future at Inter."I'm very happy at Inter. I want to stay here and build a winning team."

Arsenal must push to sign Schneiderlin - Parlour

    1105802_heroa.jpg

Former Arsenal star Ray Parlour has urged his old club to sign Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.

The Frenchman has long interested both the Gunners and north London rivals Tottenham and the ex-midfielder thinks that Wenger should act decisively to lure his compatriot to the Emirates Stadium.

"Arsenal need to get Morgan Schneiderlin if he's available in the summer," Parlour told talkSPORT.

"He would be perfect. He's a little bit like Gilberto Silva when he was at Arsenal.

"He can sit back into the back four and, when it's wide, he can be another centre-half. That's so good if you can do that. He's so comfortable on the ball and someone like him would be a great addition."

Arsenal exited the Champions League's last 16 on Tuesday on away goals at the hands of Monaco, leaving Wenger to focus on the FA Cup and Premier League.

Seven points separate league leaders Chelsea and third-placed Arsenal with nine games remaining but, whatever happens this season, Parlour insists his old club have plenty of work to do to become consistent title challengers again.

He added: "There has to be big investment at Arsenal this summer.

"The Premier League is more important than the Champions League. In Europe, sometimes, you need a bit of luck along the way but the league doesn't lie. The most consistent team always win it; that's what they've got to look at.

"They need to be challenging Chelsea and Man City, along with Liverpool and Manchester United next season."

:cool:Robson: Rooney must lead the line against Liverpool

    1104842_heroa.jpg

Wayne Rooney has played up front in Manchester United's last three fixtures and that is where he should stay for Sunday's trip to Liverpool, says former skipper Bryan Robson.

For large parts of the 2014-15 season, Rooney has been deployed in midfield by manager Louis van Gaal but the England international has enjoyed a welcome return to the forward line in recent weeks.

Rooney has led the line for United in place of Radamel Falcao against Newcastle, Arsenal and Tottenham, scoring two goals in the process to take his tally to four in as many matches in all competitions.

And Robson, who captained United to three FA Cups and a European Cup Winners' Cup, believes that Rooney plays his best football as a striker.

"I like to see Wayne Rooney up front," Robson told reporters.

"What I like about Wayne being back up there is that he can always create a goal and he can always score a goal. I think that's where he is more dangerous.

"When he goes into midfield, he forgets about scoring and wants to link passes together.

"He hits great passes but he forgets that, from midfield, you can score a goal as well so that is why I like to see him up front."

Ajax 2-1 Dnipro (agg 2-2): De Boer's men knocked out in extra-time

    1113852_heroa.jpg

Yevhen Konoplyanka proved captain fantastic as Dnipro held on to progress to the Europa League quarter-finals on away goals despite Mike van der Hoorn's extra-time goal handing Ajax a 2-1 win on Thursday.Dutch champions Ajax returned to the Amsterdam ArenA trailing 1-0 from last week's last-16 first-leg tie.

But Frank de Boer's men levelled the aggregate score on the hour mark when Riechedly Bazoer capitalised on slack defending from Egidio.

Dnipro remained competitive despite being shorn of suspended trio Roman Zozulya, Ruslan Rotan and Artem Fedetskiy and head coach Myron Markevech remaining in Ukraine with illness. And they took the initiative when Konoplyanka curled home from the edge of the box in the seventh minute of extra-time to stun the home crowd.

A nervy ending ensued when Van der Hoorn nodded in the rebound when the returning Kolbeinn Sigthorsson's initial effort rebounded off the crossbar in the 117th minute.

There would be no further drama, though, as Ajax's last realistic hope of silverware this season came to an end - with De Boer's side 11 points adrift of leaders PSV in the Eredivisie.

The hosts started brightly and Anwar El Ghazi provided Arkadiusz Milik a chance which was wasted before the teenage winger went close himself, forcing Denis Boyko into a fine fingertip save.

Dnipro started to show more going forward and Nikola Kalinic was almost rewarded for a great piece of ingenuity when his 25-yard volley on the turn brought out the best of Ajax goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.

Ajax's threat remained and Ricardo Kishna jinked his way into the area and forced a near-post stop from Bokyo, before Milik flashed a header wide from Nicolai Boilesen's pin-point left-wing cross.

Having dominated much of the game, the hosts made the breakthrough on the hour.Egidio was caught in possession deep in his own half and Bazoer raced clear before sliding his shot beyond Bokyo, who allowed the ball to squirm beneath him.

Dnipro saw a great chance to restore their aggregate lead go begging as Roman Bezus nodded wide from eight yards, while Kalinic stung the palms of Cillessen.

Extra-time came as neither side could muster a threat, but Dnipro finally found their range seven minutes into the additional period as Konoplyanka picked up the ball in the left channel and drove at the defence before bending a right-foot shot into the far corner.

In need of two goals, Ajax poured forward and they ensured a frantic finish as Van der Hoorn followed up after Van der Hoorn was denied.Boyko's over-zealous celebrations at the final whistle prompted an angry response from Van der Hoorn, as Ajax frustrations were laid bare.

Torino 1-0 Zenit (agg 1-2): Glik goal not enough as Villas-Boas' side survive

    1114162_heroa.jpg

Zenit are through to the quarter-finals of the Europa League despite being beaten 1-0 by Torino on Thursday.

Andre Villas-Boas' men arrived with a 2-0 advantage from the first leg of the last-16 tie and mainly focused on holding on to what they had in a disciplined defensive performance in Turin.

The hosts produced their share of eye-catching and inventive attacking play but largely struggled to craft clear openings, with Alexander Farnerud's set-piece deliveries their major threat.

And while Torino did score from Kamil Glik's header in the final minute, they did not have enough time to force an extra 30 minutes despite a stoppage-time rally in which Fabio Quagliarella had an effort cleared off the line.

Zenit's aggregate win means that the Russian Premier League side are into the last eight of a European competition for the first time since they lifted the Uefa Cup in 2008.

Farnerud curled a 17th-minute free kick agonisingly wide, by which time Zenit were already taking time out of the game at every opportunity.

Maxi Lopez had a chance to reduce the deficit a few moments later but the Argentine forward produced an ugly air shot.

A free kick almost brought Torino back into the tie again when Quagliarella's rasping strike was deflected wide in the 36th minute.

Lopez was unable to turn home from the resulting corner and Quagliarella then sent a tame effort into goalkeeper Yuri Lodygin's arms when unmarked at the back post.

Axel Witsel was on target for Zenit in the first leg and Torino defender Emiliano Moretti made a fine block to stop the Belgian from increasing his team's advantage three minutes before the break.

A marginal offside call went against Torino captain Glik when he headed home a Farnerud set piece four minutes after the re-start, while Quagliarella had penalty appeals waved away following a challenge from Anatoliy Tymoshchuk as the match became increasingly fractious.

Lodygin could have few complaints when he finally earned a 58th-minute yellow card for time wasting.

But the keeper made a far more significant contribution 12 minutes from time with a brilliant double save to thwart Alessandro Gazzi before Glik's header sparked a grandstand finish.

Torino would fall gallantly short, with Quagliarella going closest when substitute Nicolas Lombaerts made a vital clearance as the forward steered goalwards.
