:(Everton 3-0 Manchester United: Toffees exploit the counter to embarrass Van Gaal

    1294042_heroa.jpg

Despite enjoying the majority of possession, Manchester United were handed a shock 3-0 defeat by Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

A win would have moved the Red Devils, at least temporarily, into second place but the home side went in front early on when a sizzling counterattack was finished off by James McCarthy.

John Stones capitalised on some slow marking at a corner to head home his first goal for the Toffees shortly before half-time, leaving United reeling, but not even some attacking substitutions could turn things around for Louis van Gaal's men.

A controversial decision to rule Romelu Lukaku as not interfering with play from an offside position saw things go from bad to worse for United as substitute Kevin Mirallas pounced for the third, the visiting defence having failed to play to the whistle.

United began on the front foot but were caught out by an incisive Everton breakaway early on.

McCarthy began the move by spreading wide to Seamus Coleman, whose cross was only partially cleared by the recalled Daley Blind. McCarthy then collected the loose ball, skipped beyond weak challenges from Blind and Paddy McNair and calmly slotted low beyond David de Gea.

Marouane Fellaini should have marked his first appearance at Goodison as an opposing player with an immediate equaliser but the Belgian tamely side-footed over the bar with only Tim Howard to beat after nicking possession off Gareth Barry.

Van Gaal's side continued to probe but, for all their territorial dominance, found themselves two down 10 minutes before the break when Stones glanced home his first Everton goal from Leighton Baines's inch-perfect delivery.

The pattern of the first half remained in place despite Van Gaal's introduction of Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria, with United continuing to toil in the final third.

And Everton once again punished United on the counter when Mirallas raced onto a Barkley pass that was intended for the offside Lukaku before slotting past De Gea at his near post.

Mirallas was clearly in the mood and forced De Gea into a fine save to keep the score at three with five minutes remaining.

In a rare positive for Van Gaal, Robin van Persie then came on following a two-month injury lay-off but the day belonged to Roberto Martinez and United's place in the top four - which appeared rubber-stamped after their derby win over Manchester City - remains insecure.

Torino 2-1 Juventus: Granata claim first derby victory for 20 years

    1294792_heroa.jpg

Fabio Quagliarella returned to haunt his former club Juventus, settling a 2-1 win to give Torino their first derby triumph in 20 years and delay their rivals' title celebrations.

Victory at Stadio Olimpico coupled with Chievo beating Lazio would have wrapped up a fourth consecutive Scudetto for Juve, but the bragging rights were all Torino's on Sunday, though a draw in Rome keeps the league leaders within touching distance of the trophy.

Giampiero Ventura's side went into the match on the back of 17 winless games against their neighbours and, although they began the contest well, Andrea Pirlo's inch-perfect free-kick 10 minutes before the break looked like continuing Juve's dominance.

But Matteo Darmian restored parity just before half-time as Juve's hopes of clinching a 31st Serie A title on their neighbours patch began to slip away.

Pirlo almost doubled his tally as he struck the woodwork with another delightful free-kick early in the second half, but Torino made the most of that let-off, Quagliarella - who left Juve at the beginning of the season - poking past Gianluigi Buffon.

Juve piled men forward towards the end and went desperately close to equalising when Simone Padoin's cross hit the post, but Torino held on for their first derby win since April 1995's success by the same scoreline at Stadio delle Alpi.

Victory was richly deserved and the hosts began full of attacking intent and went close twice inside the first eight minutes, as Marco Benassi hit off-target and Quagliarella forced Buffon into action, though Alessandro Matri ought to have put Juve ahead after bringing down a Pirlo pass on 12 minutes.Torino were threatening on the break, with wing-backs Bruno Peres and Darmian looking particularly lively.

But there was little the home side could do when Pirlo stepped up to a 35th-minute free-kick and nonchalantly clipped his effort over the wall and in off the crossbar from 25 yards.

Torino's threat out wide remained, though, and they went in at the break level thanks to Darmian prodding home from close range after darting onto Quagliarella's cut-back.

Juve began the second half with something of an improvement and Pirlo almost scored a second free-kick, curling a 30-yard effort on to the right-hand post.
And Quagliarella made Juve rue that missed opportunity, converting at the near post from a teasing Darmian delivery.

Juve still had over half an hour to get back into the contest, but their chances looked to be running out when Padoin's cross hit the post and Simone Pepe was denied on the line by Daniele Padelli on the goal line, who cemented hero status with a smart stop to deny Arturo Vidal.

The final whistle was met with jubilation as Torino clung on to a famous victory which also keeps them firmly in the hunt for a European return next season.

Arsenal 0-0 Chelsea: Mourinho's men edge closer to title with Emirates stalemate

    1295532_heroa.jpg

Leaders Chelsea and title rivals Arsenal played out a feisty goalless Premier League draw at the Emirates Stadium, with much of the discussion centring on four penalty shouts all turned down.

The most prominent involved David Ospina's clumsy first-half collision with Oscar in a keenly contested stalemate that saw Cesc Fabregas booed on his return to his former club and Jose Mourinho maintain his unbeaten record against Arsene Wenger.

With Diego Costa and Loic Remy injured, Oscar began as the figurehead of Chelsea's attack and was central to the game's biggest talking point as he nodded a header past the onrushing David Ospina.

However, the Brazilian was poleaxed by the Arsenal goalkeeper and, after the effort was cleared away by Hector Bellerin, Chelsea's frustrations were clear as referee Michael Oliver opted against awarding a spot kick and brandishing a possible red card.

Fabregas then irked the home fans on his first appearance at the Emirates since leaving for Barcelona in 2011 when he was booked for a perceived dive in the area as a traditionally fiery contest began to heat up.

The London derby struggled to reach the boil after the break, however, despite plenty of attacking intent on show, as Arsenal moved level on points with second-placed Manchester City.

Chelsea, who extended their unbeaten run against Sunday's hosts to eight matches, can no longer win the title at Leicester City on Wednesday, but remain well on course - 10 points clear with a game in hand.

Arsenal edged the initial stages, although Chelsea felt that they should have earned an early penalty seven minutes in when Oscar went down under pressure from Bellerin.

Contact was minimal and Oliver waved away protests before the Gunners continued to threaten - Olivier Giroud juggling the ball in the area before Gary Cahill dealt with the danger.

Bellerin was then required to clear Oscar's goalbound effort following a sublime ball from Fabregas, with Ospina's foul on the forward failing to merit sanctions.

Mourinho was left distinctly unimpressed at the lack of a penalty or a card for the Colombian, although Oscar was able to continue after medical assistance.

Oliver was again at the centre of things 23 minutes in, as was Fabregas, who was adjudged to have dived in the box following a challenge from Santi Cazorla.

It was then Arsenal's turn to unsuccessfully appeal for a spot kick when Cahill handled after the half-hour mark, Ramires then forcing Ospina into a smart save following a quick break and clever pass by Willian.

Mourinho replaced Oscar with Didier Drogba at the break and the Chelsea boss saw his side play their part in an open start to the second period.

Both sides countered quickly but struggled to find the final pass - Per Mertesacker miscuing a shot wide before substitute Danny Welbeck failed to sort his feet and fashion an effort following Nacho Monreal's cutback.

Ultimately, Wenger failed to get the better of his opposite number at the 13th attempt, while Mourinho must wait until next Sunday's visit of Crystal Palace for an opportunity to secure Chelsea's fourth Premier League crown providing they win at Leicester.

Borussia Monchengladbach 1-0 Wolfsburg: Kruse kills off visitors' Bundesliga title hopes

    1295542_heroa.jpg

Wolfsburg handed Bayern Munich the Bundesliga title after slumping to a 1-0 loss at Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday.

Dieter Hecking's men knew that nothing less than victory would suffice if they were to prolong the championship fight for another round but they struggled to create clear-cut openings.

Indeed, Borussia had the better of a disappointing encounter and deservedly clinched all three points in the dying seconds when Max Kruse netted to send the home side above Bayer Leverkusen and into third place in the table.

Wolfsburg were never really at the races and started a game they needed to win in a strangely subdued fashion, with both Alvaro Dominguez and Fabian Johnson going close for the hosts with acrobatic volleys inside the opening quarter.

Gladbach really should have opened the scoring midway through the half when Granit Xhaka put Kruse in behind the Wolfsburg backline with a sublime ball over the top.

Kruse squared for Patrick Herrmann but the latter incorrectly assumed that Diego Benaglio was coming out to intercept and thus checked his run. By the time he realised that the Swiss shot-stopper had decided to stay rooted to his line, it was too late, with a stretching Hermann only managing to poke the ball wide.

Wolfsburg were struggling but they squandered an excellent opportunity in the 34th minute after Gladbach had turned the ball over while on the offensive.

Kevin De Bruyne led the rapid counterattack, feeding the ball out to Nicklas Bendtner on the right-hand side. However, the Dane failed to complete the one-two, allowing Dominguez to clear what should have been a scoring pass for his Belgian team-mate.

Still, Wolfsburg were finally starting to look a threat going forward and they undeniably finished the half the stronger of the two sides, with Ricardo Rodriguez firing a sweetly-struck shot just over the bar seconds before the break.

The interval interrupted the visitors' rhythm, though, as it was Gladbach who made a storming start to the second period, with Herrmann showcasing fantastic technique in testing Benaglio with a half-volley and Wendt shooting over after a lovely one-two with Raffael.

Benaglio was by far the busier of the two goalkeepers at this stage and he went scrambling across his goal in the 62nd minute to ensure that a fine effort from Kruse did not sneak inside his left-hand post.

Kruse continued to look the man most likely to break the deadlock, with the German forward flashing a right-footed volley just wide with 13 minutes remaining, and he was belatedly rewarded for his persistence in injury time when he latched onto a knockdown from Johnson and lifted the ball past Benaglio to put Wolfsburg out of their misery.

Celta Vigo 2-4 Real Madrid: Hernandez the hero again

    celta-real-madrid-liga-bbva-04262015_6pv2t0ts8s7q15etr7kd82p7e.jpg

Javier Hernandez was Real Madrid's hero for the second time in a week as his two goals helped Carlo Ancelotti's side come from behind to beat Celta Vigo 4-2.

The Mexico striker netted the crucial winner in Real's 1-0 defeat over Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie on Wednesday and was decisive again on Sunday night.

Former Barca winger Nolito opened the scoring for Celta with a fine individual effort early on, though any celebrations in the Catalan capital will have been short-lived as Toni Kroos quickly equalised.

Hernandez, again playing in place of the injured Karim Benzema, put the visitors ahead, but their risky high defensive line allowed Santi Mina to score his fifth goal in three games before the half-hour mark.

James Rodriguez's deflected effort just before the break gave Real the lead once again, though the second half proved a serious assessment of their credentials, as the visiting defence withstood periods of intense pressure.

Nevertheless, Hernandez coolly stroked home the winner with 21 minutes to go, sparing Ancelotti's blushes once again as Madrid avoided a repeat of last season's crucial slip-up at Balaidos which ended their title hopes.

A repeat of that result had been on the cards as Celta's positive start was rewarded with just nine minutes played. Nolito brilliantly slalomed between Dani Carvajal and Asier Illarramendi before cutting in from the left flank and tucking a shot just inside the left-hand post.

But the visitors' reply was swift as they restored parity just seven minutes later.
Cristiano Ronaldo caused havoc in the Celta backline with a darting run into the right side of the area and Kroos was on hand to steer home in emphatic fashion from 12 yards despite Hugo Mallo's initial interception.

Hernandez completed the turnaround in the 24th minute, placing a cool finish under Sergio Alvarez after combining with Rodriguez down the right to devastating effect.
But Celta rallied and hit back within a few moments, as Mina raced beyond the Madrid defence and finished at the second attempt after hitting the post when running in on Iker Casillas' goal.

Ancelotti's side's chances of retaking the lead before the break seemed to end with Ronaldo striking the post in the 40th minute, but luck was on their side with their next attack when Rodriguez found the net from 20 yards via a deflection off Andreu Fontas.

Celta enjoyed victory at Barcelona in November and showed no sign of holding back. And their attacking endeavour could well have been rewarded with a penalty shortly before the hour mark when Kroos tripped Fabian Orellana in the box.
However, Madrid were happy to hit the hosts on the counter and Sergio Ramos' exquisite chipped pass released Hernandez to clinically beat Alvarez to cap a fine week individually and seal a result which keeps their hopes of winning La Liga alive.

Sanchez: I'm very happy at Arsenal - but I want to win titles

    alexis-sanchez-premier-league-arsenal-v-liverpool_p0n1vea8gcp514qnxvxs3p8r4.jpg

Alexis Sanchez admits he is “very comfortable” at Arsenal and insists his team-mates want to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

The 26-year-old has been a pivotal part of Arsene Wenger’s side following his €48 million arrival from Barcelona last summer, scoring 21 goals in all competitions so far this term.

Sanchez has the chance to win silverware in his debut campaign in England after Arsenal reached next month’s FA Cup final but the Chile international is keen for the club to compete for trophies on all fronts.

"I like London, I quickly adapted. I'm very comfortable with Arsenal. In every day life, too, the city is wonderful and it helps me be a better player. I am very happy to be at Arsenal,” Sanchez told beIN Sports.

"All my team-mates want to win titles. Honouring the colours of our club.

"I have started my adventure here. Now I have to keep learning from football and from my team-mates. I must also better know the club and the league. I love English football. Here we invented football, right?”

We'll fight Barcelona until the end - Ancelotti

    carlo-ancelotti-atletico-madrid-real-madrid-champions-league-14042015_udfvgjws1dof1kuh778puhsl5.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti has warned title rivals Barcelona that Real Madrid will fight until the very last minute of the Liga season after beating Celta Vigo 4-2 on Sunday night.

Javier Hernandez scored twice, while Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez also got on the scoresheet as Madrid came from behind to record a vital three points in the race for title.

Two points separate second-placed Madrid and leaders Barca, with Ancelotti determined to apply as much pressure as possible on Luis Enrique's side.

The Blancos coach said: "We played a very good game because winning here means we played well. Celta played at a high standard. We are satisfied and happy and the team is still alive. We have a good attitude and we have shown that on the field."Our aim is clear. If we win every game, we force them to win every game. At this time we're not thinking about other teams, we're concentrating on ourselves and we are doing well.

"We'll try to be in the fight for the league until the last game, that's the goal."
Ancelotti also spoke about the form of Hernandez, who made it three goals in four days after his winner in the Champion League quarter-final second leg victory over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

"Chicharito is enjoying his moment. The rest of players have worked very well and it is true that we have suffered, but they were very effective."

Chicharito patience paying off - James

    javier-chicharito-hernandez-celta-real-madrid-liga-bbva-04262015_vtv6lotcuni1172aku7socmyj.jpg

James Rodriguez says Javier Hernandez is reaping the rewards of being patient after helping fire Real Madrid to a 4-2 win over Celta Vigo on Sunday.Madrid fell behind to Nolito's early goal, but levelled through Toni Kroos.

Hernandez then scored his first of the night to make it 2-1, only for Santa Mina to level for the hosts before half-time.

But the visitors pulled clear thanks to James' strike on 43 minutes, with Chicharito rounding off the scoring with number four in the second half.Hernandez - who is on a season-long loan deal at Madrid from Manchester United - was the also club's hero on Wednesday night with the winner in the 1-0 Champions League quarter-final second leg victory over Atletico on Wednesday.

And James revealed his delight at seeing the striker at last reap the rewards of his patience after spending much of the campaign on the substitutes' bench."Chicharito is doing really well. He's training hard and I'm happy for him. It's so fair what is happening to him now, he has been patient."

The midfielder also revealed that coach Carlo Ancelotti was concerned at the number of chances the hosts created and urged greater balance in the second half.
"Ancelotti asked us for more control in the second half. They were attacking a lot, but in the second half we knew how to control the game.

"They leave spaces, so Real Madrid are much more dangerous and have players who can take advantage of that."

Barcelona are at Bayern's level - Ter Stegen

    marc-andre-ter-stegen-barcelona-ajax-uefa-champions-league-10212014_qpn00y797m1n1htcpp50q5sf1.jpg

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is convinced his side are at the same level as Bayern Munich after the two sides were paired together in the Champions League semi-final draw.

The Catalans saw off Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals, while the newly-crowned Bundesliga champions beat Porto in their tie to set up a mouthwatering last four clash.

Ter Stegen is more than familiar with Bayern having faced them on several occasions during his time with Borussia Monchengladbach before joining Barca last summer and is expecting a tight contest.

"It will be a great duel," he told Bild. "We have a great team, are in top shape and will try to raise our game."We know Bayern have a lot of quality. I look forward to the reunion, it will be a close tie and I hope we can prevail in the end."

Ter Stegen is yet to make a league appearance for Barcelona this season but has featured in 10 Champions League games - including both legs of the quarter-final win over PSG - and will hope to retain his place for the remainder of the competition.

The tie has added intrigue with Bayern boss Pep Guardiola facing former club Barcelona for the first time since leaving Camp Nou in 2012 after four success-laden years in charge.
