A distressed holidaymaker filmed the terrifying moment passengers were forced to put on their life vests as a Cathay Pacific flight prepared to make an emergency landing.
At one point frightened passengers were told the Boeing 777-300ER would possibly have to make a water landing after smoke was detected on board as it flew from Hong Kong to Los Angeles.
Ethan Williams, a 25-year-old British tourist, noticed something wasn’t right as he watched cabin crew, and he used his mobile phone to capture the mid-air drama as it unfolded.
In his edited video, which has been viewed more than 250,000 times on YouTube, Ethan has a look of concern when he tells the camera: ‘I’m not sure what’s happening but there’s something happening on this flight.
‘All the flight attendants are running around like crazy and warning signs going off, hopefully it’s not anything too bad and we’ll be alright.’
As cabin crew check the plane’s emergency exits and ‘grab bags’, he says: ‘I don’t know, something’s not right’.
A short time later, passengers are informed that the plane would be making an emergency landing, although the reason is not explained.
A cabin crew member is overheard telling passengers: ‘We are going to do an emergency landing and it might be necessary for us to make an emergency breach.’
Travellers are advised to remove their shoes and they soon receive instruction on how to put on their life vests.
While it was a frightening experience for everyone on board, the plane’s flight attendants remained calm, reassured passengers and provided clear instructions without causing any panic on board Wednesday’s flight.
In the video, Ethan puts on his life vest and then pans the camera to the rest of the cabin, showing passengers wearing their yellow jackets and a parent helping a child in the row behind him.
Before flight attendants demonstrate the brace position, he tells the camera: ‘We’ve started to descend. We’re flying from Hong Kong to LA, so I don’t know what land there is between there.’
Moments later, Ethan and other passengers breathe a massive sigh of relief when a cabin crew member informs them they are expecting a 'normal landing' – not a water landing – at a remote US air base in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands.
He says: ‘That’s really good news, but we still don’t know why. It doesn’t really matter as long as we land OK’.
The plane dumped fuel during its rapid descent, with Ethan’s footage showing the dimly-lit cabin as a child cries and the engines rumble.
His video comes to an end with the sound of passengers applauding and speaking excitedly, with relief clearly audible in their voices.
Flight CX884 landed at Eareckson Air Station, on Shemya Island in Alaska, and later flew to Anchorage after it was deemed safe to fly.
The 276 passengers and 18 crew members were dropped off there and picked up by another Cathay Pacific plane to continue the journey to Los Angeles.
The airline said a preliminary investigation found the smoke came from an equipment cooling fan that malfunctioned.
The fan was located beneath the cabin floor, and smoke was ‘detected largely around the cockpit area,’ said Cathay Pacific.
