Wolfsburg stood up to Bayern Munich - Hecking

    wolfsburg-cropped_1dl4wltu422e31e45anxyrrw22.jpg

Wolfsburg boss Dieter Hecking has praised his players for the way in which they kept their discipline after being "surprised" by Bayern Munich's bright start in Saturday's DFL-Supercup showdown.

The DFB-Pokal champions started sluggishly at the Volkswagen Arena, with Douglas Costa causing all sorts of problems down the hosts' right-hand side with his electrifying pace.

Indeed, it came as no surprise that Bayern's summer signing from Shakhtar Donetsk played a key role in the game's opening goal, with the winger whipping over a low cross that Arjen Robben eventually fired home.

However, Wolfsburg improved the longer the game went on and Nicklas Bendtner forced penalties with his dramatic 89th-minute equaliser before then deciding the shootout 5-4 in the home side's favour.

Hecking was the first to admit that the season-opener could have gone the other way but he felt his troops deserved immense credit for refusing to buckle under Bayern's early pressure.

"For this stage of the season we have seen a very good game," the 50-year-old head coach told reporters. "There was a lot of pace to the game.

"I thought that Bayern started well. We were taken a little by surprise. Vieirinha needed some time to adapt to Douglas Costa and we could have fallen behind early.

"But, after a quarter of an hour, we found a way into the game and had the first dangerous chances. About 35 or 40 minutes it was again the same pace as in the Bundesliga. This must be said.

"We know that if Bayern get a chance, they are dangerous and they had a great situation on the left in the second half: Costa with a magnificent cross and Robben with the goal.

"After that, it was important that we were disciplined and did not lose our shape. Of course, we had to leave more space [at the back] and I think if Bayern had come up with a second goal at that stage, then Pep Guardiola would be sitting here having won the cup!"

Wolfsburg, who finished second to Bayern in the Bundesliga last season, kick off their 2015-16 campaign against Eintracht Frankfurt on August 16.

Benzema would be a great signing for Arsenal - Parlour

    1334032_heroa.jpg

Karim Benzema would be a great signing for Arsenal, according to former Gunner Ray Parlour.

Goal revealed in May that Arsenal had identified Benzema as a potential acquisition, with the Gunners believing that the France international would be open to a move to the Emirates.

Progress on the bid has been slow, however, and it is understood that Arsenal are happy to play a waiting game as they attempt to secure the striker’s signature.

Parlour believes the 27-year-old would represent a superb signing for the north Londoners, who have so far only acquired Petr Cech in the summer transfer window.

Indeed, with links to forwards abounding, Parlour has also praised PSG striker Edinson Cavani in an exclusive interview with Goal.

“Benzema would be a great signing for Arsenal. I think fans would be really excited to have him in the squad. Cavani's been mentioned, whether he's a player who could come in,” said Parlour, speaking at the launch of Arsenal’s new kit in Mumbai.

“He's got great experience with the national side and the teams he's been at so, if they're available, who knows? Something could happen there. Whether we can get them is another matter.

“We know how hard it is to buy players now. I'm sure Arsene Wenger, if those sort of players are on the market and he knows he can get them, maybe they're the ones he goes for.”

Benzema, who dropped a hint that he could join Arsenal this summer with a crypic Instagram post last week, scored 22 goals in all competitions for Real last season, while Cavani found the net 31 times for PSG.

Robben: Bayern must take blame for Wolfsburg defeat

    arjen-robben-vfl-wolfsburg-fc-bayern-munchen-dfl-supercup-01082015_j03vbdiym6221wmt7yct5lugt.jpg

Arjen Robben has admitted that Bayern Munich have to take a long, hard look at themselves in the wake of Saturday's DFL-Supercup loss to Wolfsburg.

The Dutchman gave the Bundesliga champions the lead in at the Volkswagen Arena, firing home from close range after the hosts had failed to deal with Douglas Costa's low cross from the left wing.

However, Nicklas Bendtner equalised with just over 60 seconds of normal time remaining, thus forcing a penalty shootout that that Dane then decided 5-4 in Wolfsburg's favour, with Xabi Alonso missing from the spot for Bayern.

Robben was bitterly frustrated by the nature of the defeat and conceded afterwards that Pep Guardiola's men have issues to address after losing the showpiece event for the third consecutive season.

“I’m disappointed," the winger is quoted as saying by his club's official website. "That’s football, it can all change in a minute - but we have to look very critically at ourselves because we should have wrapped it up earlier.

"We had our chances and at 2-0 it would have been all over.”

Meanwhile, Bayern defender Jerome Boateng was more upbeat about Bayern's performance, but did agree that the Bavarians had ultimately been punished for their profligacy.

“We shouldn’t be conceding right at the end," the centre-half added. "But, overall, we can be pleased with our performance.

"We were the better team, we bossed the play, had chances and should have killed the game.

"It’s unfortunate and a shame, but I think we have plenty to build on.”

Bayern begin the defence of their Bundesliga title at home to Hamburg on August 14.

Szczesny: Bad result marred Roma debut

    wojciech-szczesny-arenal_etom07gqzhwg1smd51dzq8him.jpg

New signing Wojciech Szczesny was pleased to have made his Roma debut in Saturday's 2-0 friendly loss to Sporting Lisbon but promptly called on his team-mates to set a higher standard for themselves after a "really bad" result.

The Poland international only arrived at the Stadio Olimpico on loan from Arsenal on Wednesday but he was introduced as a second-half substitute in the game at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

“It’s good to have my first game under the belt," Szczesny told his new club's official website. "It was a good experience and I have had a really good week of training with the boys; there is a fantastic group of players here.

"But, obviously, we must set the standard higher for ourselves because when you play for a big club there are no friendly games and you have to win.

"So, the result is really bad."

However, Szczesny is no doubt that Roma are set for a successful season, with head coach Rudi Garcia already having made a huge impression on him.

“He is a great coach," the 25-year-old stated. "I have only trained with him for a week but he is a good guy with a great personality.

"He takes charge of the group – he is a leader."

Szczesny also argued that once he breaks down the language barrier, his organisation of the Roma defence will improve no end.

"I'm trying to learn Italian," the shot stopper added. "I have had a week of lessons every day and I'm making progress.

"I try to speak with the [defenders] obviously. Some of the guys speak good English too. So, if you give us a few weeks, the connection and the understanding between us will be good.”

Of course, Szczesny will have to battle it out with Morgan De Sanctis for a starting berth this term, with Garcia admitting that he deliberately gave the pair 45 minutes apiece against Sporting to show that he does not have a favourite at this point.

“Szczesny has not worked with us much, but I wanted to do two things – show my faith in De Sanctis by playing him from the start and give Szczesny a run-out too.

"We are lucky enough to have two excellent goalkeepers, like all great sides. It’s a very good thing for Roma.

"I think they are equal – there is no No.1 and No.2."

'Manchester United need his speed and creativity' - Van Gaal reveals Pedro admiration

    1681822_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says the Red Devils must sign a player like Barcelona star Pedro this summer.

United have reportedly identified the Spain international as a potential summer acquisition as they seek to bolster their forward line.

Barca have repeatedly insisted that there have been no bids for the 28-year-old, but the president of Pedro’s first club, CD San Isidro, says that he has been informed of the winger’s impending move to the Premier League.

Van Gaal has now revealed that he intends to buy a player with pace and creativity, and has hinted that Pedro may be the player he targets.

"Barcelona have the speed of Neymar and [Lionel] Messi -- and they have Pedro behind them. We have to compete with that,” he told The Sun.

"We can win the title if we can buy players with speed and creativity. We have to improve our selection in that way.

"Bayern Munich have [Franck] Ribery and [Arjen] Robben. After that they can change with [Thomas] Muller and they also had [Xherdan] Shaqiri at times.

"They are our competitors. Chelsea have [Eden] Hazard, Willian, Oscar - that is speed and creativity."

Pedro made 50 appearances for Barca in all competitions last season, scoring 11 goals.

Lazio: Milinkovic-Savic is our last summer signing

    sergej-milinkovic-savic-brazil-u20-serbia-u20_2u1cs8is03bj17srmpwnri7za.jpg

Igli Tare has played down the significance of Lazio's disastrous pre-season results, revealing that Sergej Milinkovic-Savic will almost certainly be their final summer signing as the squad is now "complete and competitive".

The Biancocelesti will compete in the play-off round of the Champions League later this month, after a sensational third-placed finish in Serie A under new coach Stefano Pioli last season.

However, they have looked horribly out of sorts in pre-season, suffering three successive friendly defeats, to Vicenza, Anderlecht and Mainz.

That has sparked fears among supporters that Lazio are ill-equipped to compete on two fronts this term but sporting director Tare says that with Milinkovic-Savic set to complete a €9 million move to the Stadio Olimpico from Genk on Monday, the capital club are perfectly primed for the 2015-16 campaign.

"The squad is complete now," the former Albania international told the Gazzetta dello Sport.

"The market doesn't close until August 31, so it's always possible to do some deals. But what we had to do, we have done and this should be enough.

"Milinkovic-Savic was the little piece that we were missing. Now the squad is complete and competitive.

"After having taken Wesley Hoedt, Ravel Morrison and Patric, we were still lacking a wide attacker and a midfielder, so Ricardo Kishner and Milinkovic-Savic were the elements that we were looking for in order to tick those boxes.

"Lazio have not sold any of their best players, so when I say that the squad is complete, I'm referring both to the fact that we have two starters for every position and that in each department we have experienced players and young players.

"It's the right mix to continue the growth that began last year with Pioli."

Tare also insisted that the team's poor form since the summer break is no cause for concern.

"It's certainly nothing to worry about," the ex-Lazio striker added.

"Defeats are never good but, in a certain sense, we had accounted for them. Pioli wanted to meet strong opponents who were more advanced than us physically, knowing that it could give a bad impression of the squad.

"But this was the best way to speed up our preparation for the games that count: the Supercoppa against Juventus and the Champions League preliminary round. For these challenges, we are ready."

:(:(:(Man Utd agree £44.5m Di Maria sale to PSG

    1702392_heroa.jpg

Angel Di Maria is set to undergo a medical at Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday ahead of a £44.5 million move to the club from Manchester United, Goal understands.

Di Maria’s future has been the subject of intense scrutiny in recent weeks, with his agent holding talks with the French champions in July.

Despite a poor debut season at Old Trafford, Di Maria has been coveted by PSG for over two seasons – Laurent Blanc’s side attempted to buy the Argentine last summer – and they now appear set to land their man.

The 27-year-old missed a planned flight to the United States on July 25, leading Louis van Gaal to reveal that he was unsure of the player’s whereabouts.

Blanc has said that negotiations with the player – who was fined for his no-show – and the club are now nearing a conclusion, and Di Maria is set to finalise his move on Sunday by undergoing a medical in Qatar.

United will take a significant hit on the £59.1 million that they paid to acquire Di Maria from Real Madrid last summer, but may subsequently intensify efforts to sign Pedro from Barcelona, with Louis van Gaal revealing his admiration for the Spaniard on Sunday.

Di Maria made just 32 appearances in all competitions for United last season, scoring four goals and providing 12 assists.

I expect De Bruyne to stay - Hecking

    kevin-de-bruyne-manuel-neuer-medhi-benatia-vfl-wolfsburg-fc-bayern-munchen-dfl-supercup-01082015_44w84w9pkrmd1m896rtcjr25p.jpg

Dieter Hecking is confident Kevin de Bruyne will snub interest from Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain to remain at Wolfsburg this season.

The Belgium international scored 10 Bundesliga goals last season and topped the assist charts by some distance with 20. The midfielder played a starring role for the DFB Pokal winners as they beat Bayern Munich in the German Supercup, setting up Nicklas Bendtner for a late equaliser and then burying his spot kick in the penalty shootout.

With City and PSG lurking, De Bruyne has admitted that he is not sure what the future holds, but Hecking believes that winning a second piece of silverware will encourage the 24-year-old to remain at the Volkswagen-Arena for at least another year as they look to challenge Bayern to the league title this year.

"We have many interesting players, that is the curse of our success," the coach told reporters after the win over Pep Guardiola's men.

"But Kevin noticed again what we can achieve with this team in the next season.

"We don't want to sell him. I can understand his statements, but I expect him to stay.“

After guiding his team to success in the DFB-Pokal and a second-placed finish in the German top flight, the 50-year-old was delighted to pick up another trophy at the expense of the Bavarian club.

"If you can experience a day like Saturday, you know what you're working for.

"Of course this was just the Supercup, but still it was a wonderful evening of football.“

Mourinho: Diego Costa 'a doubt' for start of season

    1693522_heroa.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says striker Diego Costa is a doubt for the start of the season due to a problem with his hamstring.

The Spain international was left out of the Blues’ Community Shield squad to face Arsenal despite Mourinho insisting before the game he would be fit to play.

The Blues boss has now admitted the striker could miss the visit of Swansea on Saturday as the champions kick off their title defence at Stamford Bridge.

“I don’t know if Diego Costa will be available for the start of the season," he told BT Sport.

“He had a little problem after the Barcelona game. After that he was training normally and we thought he would be ready, but this morning he was feeling uncomfortable."

Costa finished last season as Chelsea's top scorer with 20 Premier League goals but was forced to miss the end of the season due to problems with his hamstring.

Vidal targets Champions League win with Bayern Munich

Arturo Vidal says the chances of achieving European glory is what convinced him to leave Juventus for Bayern Munich as he is desperate to win the Champions League this season.

The Chile international reached the Champions League final with the Serie A champions last season, but believes he has a better chance of winning the competition with Pep Guardiola's men.

"I have come here to win the Champions League," he told reporters.

"Hopefully it will be this year, but I will spend several years here and hope to win as many cups as I possibly can.

"I will play in midfield the same way I did with the national team and with Juventus. That is where I feel more comfortable."

Vidal made his official debut for Bayern on Saturday as they lost out on the first piece of silverware of the season to Wolfsburg in the DFB Supercup.

The 28-year-old previously enjoyed a spell in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen between 2007 and 2011.

Origi: Liverpool ready for a very good season

    1673932_heroa.jpg

Liverpool striker Divock Origi is confident the Reds are "ready for a very good season" as they prepare for the first game of the new Premier League campaign against Stoke on Saturday.

Origi has netted twice in pre-season since linking up with Liverpool, following a season-long loan at former side Lille, with the 20-year-old on target in a 2-0 win over HJK on Saturday. And the Belgium international is determined to make a name for himself on Merseyside with Brendan Rodgers' men.

He told the club's official website: "I think I've started well and I've had to adapt to the rhythm, because in England the rhythm is very high.

"I was happy to score and I'm confident for the rest of the season."The most important thing was to adapt to the rhythm and the players - I've had to give 200 per cent in every training session but I'm learning every day and now it's paying off."

Liverpool start the new season where they finished the last one with a trip to the Britannia Stadium, where Rodgers' men were thrashed 6-1 in May. Rodgers has overseen a squad overhaul since that crushing defeat – with the likes of James Milner and Christian Benteke arriving at Anfield - and Origi says the new players have gelled already:

"We're ready for a very good season, " he added. "We're very tight as a group and now we have to show it on the field."

PSG want to win all possible titles in France - Al-Khelaifi

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is confident the club will continue to improve and become a dominant force in Europe.Laurent Blanc's men added to last season's domestic treble with a 2-0 win over Lyon in the Trophee des Champions in Montreal on Saturday.

The Ligue 1 side also beat the likes of Manchester United, Barcelona and Chelsea to the International Champions Cup in their pre-season tour of the United States.

And Al-Khelaifi is confident the team will add more titles over the coming years and begin to challenge the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

"Once again, I am a proud and happy president of Paris Saint-Germain," he said of their latest trophy win. "I congratulate the players and the staff for this victory - our third in a row.

"It is a reward for the tremendous work done by the players and staff during preseason, which was also marked by our victory in the International Champions Cup against our leading European rivals.

"These victories confirm this success and all our ambitions remain the same: to win all possible titles in France and continue to grow in Europe."

Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea: Wenger breaks Mourinho jinx to lift Community Shield

    1728882_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger finally beat rival manager Jose Mourinho at the 14th time of asking as Arsenal emerged with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

The Gunners had gone over 500 minutes without netting against the Blues until Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring in the first half, shifting the ball onto his left foot and rifling a thunderous effort into the top corner.

Mourinho tried to rally his side in the second period, bringing on Radamel Falcao, but it was Eden Hazard who had the best chance to level the scores, only to blast the ball over the bar.

    i

Petr Cech, facing his old club, was forced to palm away Oscar's goal-bound free-kick as time ticked away, but Arsenal held on comfortably - and even had two one-on-one chances to extend their lead - to pick up their third trophy of pre-season.

Both sides were missing their top scorers from last season, but Chelsea felt the absence of the hamstrung Diego Costa more keenly than Arsenal did that of the rested Alexis Sanchez.

Cech, so often Chelsea's saviour throughout his glittering decade at Stamford Bridge before his switch across London in June, was rarely troubled in Arsenal's goal as Mourinho's men looked blunt up top without Costa.

By contrast, Oxlade-Chamberlain was excellent throughout for Arsenal, while Theo Walcott - handed a starting spot up front - and Mesut Ozil also impressed as Wenger's men deservedly retained the Community Shield, having also overcome then Premier League champions Manchester City last summer.

Chelsea weathered early pressure and former Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas had tentative appeals for a penalty rejected by referee Anthony Taylor in the ninth minute.

But it was the FA Cup holders who took the lead midway through the half - and did so in some style through Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The England winger collected Walcott's pass, cut inside Cesar Azpilicueta and rifled an unstoppable left-footed shot into Thibaut Courtois' far top corner.

Chelsea responded well and should have been level nine minutes before the break, but Ramires somehow contrived to nod Loic Remy's arced cross from the left over Cech's crossbar from six yards.
And the Brazilian's miss would have proven even more costly had Branislav Ivanovic not bailed him out with a terrific goal-saving clearance when Aaron Ramsey looked certain to head Oxlade-Chamberlain's cross past a stranded Courtois on the stroke of half-time.

Mourinho turned to Falcao at the break in an attempt to sharpen his side's cutting edge, but it was two of Chelsea's stars from last season who created their best chance of the second half on the hour.

Fabregas picked out Hazard in the inside-right channel, but the off-colour Belgian could only blaze his shot over the bar from 10 yards.

Cech then proved his worth with a relatively comfortable save from Chelsea substitute Oscar's free-kick, and Olivier Giroud could - maybe should - have doubled Arsenal's advantage in the 68th minute when he fired over from close range.

The Gunners missed two further opportunities to put the game to bed, with first Santi Cazorla and then Kieran Gibbs missing when clean through against Courtois, who closed down the angle well and devoured the shots.

Chelsea continued to press in their search for an equaliser, but with Costa absent in body - and Hazard unable to conjure his usual magic - Mourinho's proud record against Wenger never looked like being maintained.
