'Arsenal are serious about winning trophies' - Oxlade-Chamberlain hits out at selfie critics'

    1728882_heroa.jpg

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has hit back at those who criticise Arsenal's players for taking selfies, claiming they are serious about winning trophies.

The England international scored the only goal of the game as the Gunners beat Premier League champions Chelsea in Sunday's Community Shield clash at Wembley.

But the Emirates Stadium outfit had been criticised in the build-up to the match by Roy Keane, who believed a number of Arsenal players were "more interested in selfies and six-packs" than winning.

However, Oxlade-Chamberlain refutes those claims and feels that every member of the squad is hard-working and looking to help the team towards silverware.

"It’s a new era, isn’t it? Some people do it, some don’t," he said of Keane's selfie criticism. "We’re serious about winning trophies. Personally, and I can speak for the rest of the squad, we’ve been serious every single year I’ve been at the club about winning trophies.

“You can see that on the pitch. A lot of people don’t see when we lose and go through tough times how upset and disappointed we are.

"We’ve always wanted to win trophies and in the last years we’ve won a few. This season we want to go that one better."

Arsene Wenger's side finished third in last season's Premier League but are being tipped by some to be reigning champions Chelsea's nearest challengers when the 2015-16 campaign gets under way on Saturday.

And Oxlade-Chamberlain believes a stable squad means they can challenge right at the top of the table while they will take confidence from beating the Blues in the season's curtain-raiser.

"We’ve all been together a good number of years, we’ve shared two consecutive successes in the FA Cup and we’ve had the highs and the nice feeling from that. That always helps. As a team we’ve suffered some upsets as well and I think we’ve grown from that and learned.

"It was what we needed against a good Chelsea outfit after the season they had last year. It’s important for us to come into these fixtures and lay down good foundations and good markers. I’m glad we did that at Wembley.

"It does help the confidence and that belief and faith going into that next fixture against them. Against any of the teams at the top of the table, that helps but it is a long season and it is very early doors.

"We can’t get too carried away with that but it is a good end to our pre-season which has gone really well."

I'd give my life to win La Liga with Atletico, says Torres

    fernando-torres-atletico-madrid-28072015_gh5dkrj4y6k9zsvbqizosk79.jpg

Fernando Torres says he would give everything to win La Liga with Atletico Madrid before he retires. The former Chelsea striker won the Segunda title with Atleti back in 2002 but has never managed to clinch a top-flight domestic league winners' medal after missing out on Premier League glory with both Liverpool and Chelsea.

Having rejoined the 2013-14 Spanish champions last season, however, Torres is now desperate to get his hands on the trophy.

"There are still trophies for me to win. For example, I'm missing a league title. I have never won one and it would be very special to win it with Atletico," he told a press conference ahead of the pre-season clash with Shanghai SIPG."You've always got to go for everything. I'd give my life and everything I have to win that.

"I want to go on winning, I feel great and full of enthusiasm for playing at the top level. I still have many years left to play and I want to enjoy them here at Atleti."I want people to enjoy themselves along with me. I want to win trophies, be it this season, next season or the one after."

Torres has been handed the No.9 jersey ahead of the 2015-16 campaign following Mario Mandzukic's move to Juventus and the Spain international hopes it will bring about a "special" campaign.

"I am pleased to have the number I grew up with at the club again," added the 31-year-old. "This is a special season for me."Atleti take on Shanghai on Tuesday at 13.00CET.

Bale ideal for United - Robson

    garethbale-cropped_875ds35ieub916x713lszttn5.jpg

Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson says Louis Van Gaal would be delighted if the club can replace Angel di Maria with Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale. With Di Maria on the verge of joining Paris Saint-Germain after just one season at Old Trafford, Bale has once again been linked with a move to United.

Madrid boss Rafael Benitez insists the 26-year-old is not for sale, but Robson talked up a possible pursuit of the winger and pointed to his ability to play in more than one position."Bringing Bale in would be a really good signing if it was to happen," said the 58-year-old, speaking at the launch of ESPN's Greatest Sporting Cities research.

"The good thing with Bale, and this is what the manager likes, is he can play in two different positions - he can play wide coming in and also as a centre-forward."It will be really difficult but if the manager can add him to the squad I think he will be a happy man."

Manchester United target Pedro can play for any team in the world - Pep Guardiola

    pedro-barcelona_q3cnbl2sm5151ks9kpi0cp2wo.jpg

Manchester United target Pedro has the ability to play for "any team in the world,” according to Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola.Pedro, 28, is reportedly being lined up by the Red Devils who have agreed to sell Angel Di Maria to Paris Saint-Germain for £44.5 million, Goal understands.

Spain international Pedro has been frustrated by a lack of opportunities at Camp Nou and Guardiola - who promoted Pedro from Barcelona's B side to the first-team squad - is confident the forward will succeed if he moves to Old Trafford.
“Pedro has played millions of games for Barcelona ... so that shows the quality he has,” he told reporters.

“He is a world champion; he is a European champion; he has won the Champions League and many league titles."There is no doubt about his quality and he has the ability to play in any team in the world.”

    Galliani: Ibrahimovic? We'll see

    zlatan-ibrahimovic-paris-saint-germain_1c917h6onceot1mtdtzb786k51.jpg

AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani says the club have not given up hope of re-signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Rossoneri have made little secret of their desire to bring the Sweden international back to San Siro this summer, with coach Sinisa Mihajlovic admitting his arrival would signify a major breakthrough.

Last week Ibrahimovic said he was happy at PSG and expects to see out the final year of his contract, but Galliani is refusing to concede defeat just yet.

“Zlatan has a contract for another year with PSG, but we will see. The window still has a long way to go. Let's see what happens,” Galliani told reporters. He also refused to rule out a new bid for Roma defender Alessio Romagnoli, but insisted he was happy with the defensive options currently available to Mihajlovic.

“We’ll see,” he said. "Rodrigo Ely is doing very well, Cristian Zapata has started well, and we have Gabriel Paletta, Alex and Philippe Mexes. We’re definitely well covered.”

Milan are currently in Munich for the Audi Cup where they will take on Tottenham and Bayern Munich, having drawn 0-0 with Real Madrid in their opening game of the pre-season tournament last week.

“This tournament features some of the best teams in the world,” he said.“Milan are doing very well, we’re training well and we played with great character against Real Madrid.”

    Benitez: No fallout with Ronaldo

    cristianoronaldo-cropped_19b6z6ppymtmu13sii43foshkl.jpg

Real Madrid coach Rafael Benitez says Cristiano Ronaldo's absence from his Audi Cup squad is due to injury rather than any fallout between the pair.

Ronaldo and strike partner Karim Benzema will not feature in the pre-season competition in Munich after picking up back and thigh injuries respectively. The Portugal captain's absence follows reports of a dispute between Ronaldo and Benitez in training - something the coach has been quick to deny.

"He's a great professional and someone who is very competitive, he wants to win every single small game or situation," Benitez said."I'm really pleased to work [with] him, [I'm] sorry because he's not here, but [there's] no problems between us. I said before, he's a very competitive player so I am pleased with that.

"He had a lower back problem so we decided to leave him there."

Benitez: De Gea? I'm happy with Madrid goalkeepers

    rafaelbenitez-cropped_ia282udno29111kwizsgibuti.jpg

Real Madrid coach Rafael Benitez has reiterated his satisfaction with the goalkeepers at his disposal after again being quizzed over a possible move for David de Gea.The Manchester United man has been linked with a move to the Bernabeu for months, with his current deal at Old Trafford set to expire in June 2016.

However, while Madrid have allowed Iker Casillas to join Porto, they have since signed Kiko Casilla from Espanyol, leaving them with four keepers in their first team squad."I don't talk about players from other teams. He [De Gea] is not our player," Benitez said.

"I am really pleased with our keepers. Now we have Pacheco and Rubin Yanez will be one of our three keepers. And you know that Keylor Navas and Kiko Casilla already are.

"These are our keepers so we can talk about them, not the other keepers."

:(Ferdinand: Di Maria will regret Manchester United failure

    angeldimaria-cropped_9ncujxgtnvd618qxi480kn18i.jpg

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes Paris Saint-Germain-bound winger Angel Di Maria will regret his failure at Old Trafford.

Di Maria, 27, is on the brink of joining PSG after he was pictured in Doha for a reported medical in the Qatari capital on Monday ahead of a £44.5 million move.

The Argentina international's imminent switch to the French champions comes just 12 months on from his record £59.7 million move to Manchester, where he failed to settle in Louis van Gaal's side despite enjoying a bright start to life at Old Trafford.

And Ferdinand, who won six Premier League titles with United, said Di Maria's reputation has been tarnished forever."He will now always have on his CV that he was a failure at Man United," Ferdinand told ESPN FC at a BT Sport media event.

"As a professional, I wouldn't want something like that on my record. If I could rectify it by staying and trying to prove myself, I would have done that."As a fan, I would have liked for him to stay there and prove he can perform for Man United. That is what we all wanted to see when the club paid so much for him last summer, but that isn't happening, it seems.

"I can understand why some fans are disappointed that he is leaving so soon, but this is a business."United may have looked at it this summer and Van Gaal has probably come to the conclusion that he doesn't fit into his system for whatever reason. At that point, you have to cash in."

Di Maria made just 32 appearances in all competitions for United last season, scoring four goals and providing 12 assists.

Luis Enrique: I want Pedro to stay at Barcelona

    1682062_heroa.jpg

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique says he wants Pedro to stay at Camp Nou amid significant interest from Manchester United.

The English side are lining up a deal worth around £22 million (€30m) for the 28-year-old attacker, but former Roma and Celta Vigo boss Luis Enrique insists he doesn't want his player to leave the European champions.

"Pedro is a high-level player and as a coach I want him to stay here, but is his decision," he told reporters on Tuesday.

"There will only be exits if someone wants to leave and at the moment we don't have news about this."

United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is widely reported to be heading to Catalunya in an attempt to close a deal, while manager Louis van Gaal admitted recently that Pedro's qualities are exactly what he needs in his squad.

"Barcelona have the speed of Neymar and [Lionel] Messi -- and they have Pedro behind them. We have to compete with that,” Van Gaal told The Sun.

"We can win the title if we can buy players with speed and creativity. We have to improve our selection in that way."

Pedro started only 15 league games for Barcelona in 2014-15 after finding himself pushed to the fringes of the first team after Luis Suarez's arrival from Liverpool.

Luis Enrique stressed in July that any clubs interested in signing Pedro must meet the forward’s £22m release clause, while Uruguay international Suarez has urged his teammate to remain at Camp Nou.

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola promoted Pedro from Barcelona’s B team to the first-team squad in 2008, and believes that he has the ability to play for “any team in the world.”

Gotze and Draxler aren't champions like Tevez, Pirlo and Vidal - Matthaus

    only-germany-mario-gotze-julian-draxler-germany_1s8fv3hqlna8f1st26mxqf7f2y.jpg

Former Germany international Lothar Matthaus says Mario Gotze and Julian Draxler do not have the "character of champions" to replace Andrea Pirlo, Carlos Tevez and Arturo Vidal at Juventus.

The Serie A champions face the prospect of replacing three of their best players after Tevez joined Boca, Pirlo went to MLS and Vidal joined Bayern Munich this summer.

Schalke star Draxler and Bayern forward Gotze are top of the Old Lady’s shopping list, but Matthaus believes the pair would prove less than adequate replacements in Turin."They're good, young, technical. But they do not have the character of champions,” the former Germany international told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“They are always missing something to reach 100 per cent. If you are Gotze and you are not playing, you go up to the coach and impose yourself. But that does not happen. They are not like Tevez, Pirlo and Vidal.”

The 1990 World Cup-winner went on to warn coach Massimiliano Allegri that he will have to alter his team’s style of play given the type of players they have brought in.

“Juve will have to change the style of play considerably. They were looking for a director of play in place of Pirlo, but got Khedira, who is already injured, and not that kind of player anyway.

“Mario Mandzukic is not Tevez and Vidal is a great loss. I like him a lot, he will make a difference for Bayern. He is a leader, he attacks and defends. He is intelligent and also knows how to manage himself. “In the final in Berlin [against Barcelona] he seemed destined to be sent off immediately, but he made it to the end of the game.”

Former Bayern and Inter star Matthaus also added his belief that the only reason Khedira joined the club was because he was cast off by Real Madrid.

“Khedira came to Turin because Real Madrid do not want him anymore.Otherwise you would not have ever seen him in Serie A.”

Barca players elect Iniesta as new captain

    juventus-barcelona-champions-league-final-06062015_1uy4zg3tmc8dl1au6l0wo0lyly.jpg

Barcelona have announced that Andres Iniesta will succeed Xavi as club captain.
Lionel Messi will be second captain for the 2015-16 season after hitting 56 goals in 56 games last season.

Sergio Busquets is third in line, with Javier Mascherano fourth. The appointments were made following a secret ballot amongst the playing staff, who voted for Iniesta to lead them this season.

The results have been formally announced by the club but will now need to be approved by Luis Enrique and his coaching staff.

Gerard Pique was fourth-captain last season, but he has been replaced by Argentina international Mascherano, who has been named among the skippers for the first time since joining the club in 2010.Iniesta is now the longest-serving player at Camp Nou, having made his debut in the October 2002 Champions League game away to Bruges.

“Above all it is a very special responsibility to represent not only the team but much more: the kit, the club image,” Iniesta told Mundo Deportivo last week. “Becoming the first team captain it is something very special, especially for people who have spent so much time at the club.

“In the same way that all people are different, I don't think there is an exact model of a captain. Everyone is different and communicate things in their own way."

Official: Arsenal's Akpom joins Hull City on season-long loan

    1655672_heroa.jpg

Hull City have signed Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom on a season-long loan.

The 19-year-old featured in four of Arsenal's five pre-season fixtures and scored a hat-trick in the 4-0 win over a Singapore Select XI.

Akpom signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract in February before joining Nottingham Forest on loan for the remainder of the season.

The forward becomes the eighth player to be loaned out by Arsenal this summer after Wojciech Szczesny, Carl Jenkinson, Yaya Sanogo, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Daniel Crowley, Jon Toral and Isaac Hayden, who has also joined Hull for the new campaign.

Following Akpom's three goals against the Singapore Select XI last month, Arsene Wenger insisted that he had no plans to send the striker out on loan again.

"I sent him out on loan last year because I thought he needed that," said the Arsenal manager.

"But this season no, I plan to keep him with us. It's down to performance and attitude and he has the assets to be a big talent. And, after that, to be an efficient player week in week out, that's the target.

"So it's down to him. How much I don't know. It's encouragement to do well and work even harder. He’s a young player and it can lift confidence. The confidence you sense in the dressing room from other players is important as well."

Jose Mourinho has revealed his previous differences with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich are long behind him and they now enjoy a harmonious relationship.

The Chelsea boss was sacked by Abramovich in 2007 despite claiming two titles in his first three seasons at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho departing after an indifferent start to the 2007-08.

Trophy-laden spells with Inter and Real Madrid followed before the 52-year-old was lured back to the Premier League by Chelsea in 2013, Mourinho winning his third English title in his second campaign back at the club.

As Chelsea prepare to begin their latest title defence against Swansea City this weekend, Mourinho is delighted with his working environment.

"In my first period, my personal relationship [with Abramovich] was very good [but] professionally we had some interferences and a bit of a disagreement with some ideas," he told Sky Sports News.

"In this moment we don't have this problem. When I left Real Madrid to come here, Mr Abramovich asked me to fight for titles.

"In my first season we were almost there, in my second season we did it and in my third season if you are close, you can always do it."
