Simeone delighted with 'exceptional' Atletico Madrid

    simeone-cropped_1l0iisce00136164ru4jr1ufui.jpg

Diego Simeone praised an "exceptional" Atletico Madrid after their 2-0 Champions League victory over Galatasaray on Tuesday.

Antoine Griezmann's double early in the first half put Atletico well in control of the Group C clash, and though substitute Umut Bulut did threaten for Gala on occasions, the Liga side were worthy of all three points.

"We played remarkable football in the first half, we were exceptional," said Simeone, although he still saw room for improvement in their overall performance."We nearly threw it away at the end [of the first half], because we were poor in our work-rate at that time.

"But in the second half, we played according to the score and we controlled it well.
The Argentine also had acclaim for strike duo Griezmann and Jackson Martinez, saying: "I thought that Antoine and Jackson were very good also, they both worked very hard.

"The whole team was terrific, because it was a tough match."The result represented the perfect response from Atletico to their 2-1 league loss at home to Barcelona in La Liga last Saturday.

Los Rojiblancos will travel to Benfica next in Group C at the end of September.

Pellegrini: Juventus were lucky to defeat City

Manuel Pellegrini bemoaned Manchester City's luck as they endured another Champions League night to forget in a 2-1 defeat to Juventus at Etihad Stadium.

The Premier League leaders, who have won five games from five domestically without conceding, went ahead in the 57th minute when Giorgio Chiellini put into his own goal under pressure from Vincent Kompany.

But Mario Mandzukic touched in Paul Pogba's superb lofted pass to level with 20 minutes to play before Alvaro Morata got the better of City debutant Nicolas Otamend to rifle a brilliant winner beyond Joe Hart."It's disappointing, I don't think we deserved to lose," he told BT Sport.

"We had better chances and played better than Juventus. It was a typical Champions League game, both teams didn't create many chances but we had more possession."It was not a tactical problem, Juventus just scored two beautiful goals."

Yaya Toure has been regularly criticised for failing to bring his dominant Premier League form to showpiece Champions League nights – a perception the towering Ivorian did little to alter as Juve stole the points.

But the 32-year-old felt City's opponents were fortunate on their part, and pointed towards some poor finishing from his own team."I think the Italian team played very well, they defended well and I think they were lucky," he added.

"I don't think we played so bad. We missed a lot of chances."We just have to be strong and try to bounce back in the next game. We've been brave and we have to learn from Europe and try to do it better."

City have now failed to win their first home game of the group stage for the fifth time in as many seasons in the Champions League.

Horrific Shaw injury compounds dismal night for Van Gaal & Manchester United

    1929582_heroa.jpg

Manchester United have suffered Champions League away defeats before and will do so again, but the 2-1 loss to PSV on Tuesday night will taste as bitter as almost any.

The horrific leg break suffered by Luke Shaw after Hector Moreno's reckless challenge cast a shadow over the evening long before United fell apart and began hurriedly chasing their tails. Maybe they should have known it was going to be one of those nights the second they saw the left-back lying on the turf in complete agony.

The impact of seeing a team-mate suffer an injury as gruesome as Shaw's cannot be underestimated. United's players were clearly shaken up by the sight of the England star's twisted leg, with many keeping their distance to save themselves from registering the full horror. It just so happened to be a guy who was beginning to find peak form again too.

The player closest to the incident, and the first to signal the gravity of the situation, was Memphis Depay – the man who has quickly become Shaw's best friend since arriving at the club in July. It was a running joke throughout United's summer tour of the USA that the two had become immediately inseparable, always chatting, laughing and joking.

Depay even acknowledged Shaw's part in his bedding-in process in Monday's pre-match press conference, explaining that the 20-year-old's Premier League experience has helped him in his early adaptation to his new surroundings.

"Of course [Anthony Martial and I] are both young so we can help each other and ask each other questions," said the Dutchman. "The same goes for Luke Shaw, he has played in the Premier League a lot more than me so I ask him a lot of questions."

It was fitting, then, that Depay should put United ahead as Shaw headed for the hospital. His magical feet had Santiago Arias and Jeffrey Bruma tangled in knots, then he calmly slotted beyond Jeroen Zoet to leave his former PSV fans with wry smiles.

But Moreno was to live up to his role as the ultimate pantomime villain, heading home via a Daley Blind deflection from a left-wing corner in first-half stoppage time. Maxime Lestienne then found space in behind Matteo Darmian for at least the fourth time in the match but finally delivered a killer ball. Luciano Narsingh met it with an unstoppable header and United's horror night was complete.

By this time United were already looking like they were running out of ideas. Martial had started up front but after initial bright moments faded out of the game, unable to provide the focal point his side needed to plunder territory at key times. Juan Mata flickered but rarely shone, while the pacy outlets of Depay and Ashley Young were rarely allowed to flourish.

Behind them, Bastian Schweinsteiger often slowed the game right down, which benefited PSV a lot more than his own side, while Ander Herrera only ever seemed to pick up the pace when sitting deep.

Yet the loss of Shaw exposed them most glaringly. When Narsingh headed home at the far post there was neither Marcos Rojo nor Blind anywhere near him. A left side of defence which has looked refreshingly solid for most of this season suddenly seemed to be full of beginners rather than international regulars after Shaw's exit.

Blind had no joy at all after switching to left-back, while Rojo seemed well off the pace in his first official game since Argentina's loss in the Copa America final over two months ago. Issues which have been swept under the carpet amid a reasonably successful start to the season are evident once more.

"Tonight we were well and truly punished," admitted skipper Chris Smalling after the match, and he couldn't have put it better. But it is not as though a performance like this hasn't been coming given United's lack of a cutting edge of late.

It's almost a case of one step forward, two back these days at Manchester United. David de Gea signs a new deal, but Wayne Rooney picks up a hamstring injury. Anthony Martial delivers a stunning debut clincher, yet days later another young star is ruled out for a period of some months. A win against Club Brugge, a loss to Swansea. A victory over Liverpool, defeat to PSV.

The initial shock of Shaw's injury will fade in time, but the gap left by his absence will linger. So too will United's deep flaws which were truly exposed on an ugly night for Van Gaal in Eindhoven.

Ibrahimovic regrets not scoring against Malmo

    zlatan-ibrahimovic-marco-verratti-psg_hfvxyjjnpvdf1hy6ysggot5i4.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic admitted he was disappointed not to have scored for Paris Saint-Germain against former club Malmo , though he revealed it was a "great feeling" to face them in the Champions League.

The Sweden international helped current employers Paris Saint-Germain record a 2-0 victory over the team where he started his professional career.

However, he was hauled off in the 75th minute after being unable to mark the occasion with a goal despite having a trio of chances that he could not beat Malmo goalkeeper Johan Wiland with in the first half.

"It was a great feeling to play against one of my former teams," Ibrahimovic told beIn Sport .

"In addition they are a Swedish club, it does not happen often to see them in the Champions League and here I had the chance to confront them. It was a bit like a dream.

"But I was motivated, believe me, I wanted to score. I did not do it."

Angel Di Maria and Edinson Cavani did score for PSG to give Laurent Blanc's side a winning start to their Group A campaign.

And their strength-in-depth prompted Ibrahimovic to state the French champions are better equipped for success in the competition this year, having been knocked out at the quarter-final stage last season.

"We have a stronger team this season," he added. "Di Maria adds more, Kevin Trapp is also there.

"We have great players who have to find their role and once they have adjusted, they will benefit the whole team."

:(:(:(:(Manchester United are even more unbalanced now - Scholes

    anthony-martial-psv-manchester-united-champions-league-09152015_1q7pkkinncly81f9fqj81ekkr0.jpg

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes says Louis van Gaal’s side are even more unbalanced following the departures of Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez.

The Red Devils have once again spent heavily this summer, bringing in players such as Memphis Depay, Anthony Martial, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin.

However, the 40-year-old feels the squad is lacking in attack and believes that Van Gaal’s side have erred in allowing top forwards to leave without bringing in replacements.

"The one thing with the United squad now is that they're short of goals," he told BT Sport.

"Short of real top quality centre forwards who guarantee you goals.

"Van Gaal spoke last year about his squad being unbalanced and I think it's even more unbalanced now without top strikers."

Manchester United opened their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven but Scholes was pleased with the performance despite the disappointing result.

"They've let three or four strikers go. I think if we'd have kept a Van Persie or a Hernandez it looks quite strong,” he added.

“They can score goals. [Anthony] Martial could be a real threat coming off the bench. I just think that's a mistake.

“Apart from that I was encouraged by tonight.”

Wilshere injury not career-threatening - Wenger

    jackwilsherearsenewenger-cropped_1l52haum3dzdv16z0xnklgfky3.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists Jack Wilshere can recover from his injury difficulties to enjoy a successful career after being ruled out for the next three months.

The Gunners confirmed on Tuesday that the England international faces an extended lay-off as he prepares to undergo surgery on his left fibula.

Wilshere sustained the injury in pre-season and is set to miss much of the remainder of 2015.

Ahead of Arsenal's Champions League opener against Dinamo Zagreb, though, Wenger remained upbeat about Wilshere's chances of making a full recovery.

"With Wilshere we have had bad news, he will need surgery and will be out four around three months," the Frenchman explained.

"He is young enough to get over this, l'm confident he can make the career his talent deserves.

"He is disappointed but he has shown in the past he can deal with that. He is determined to come back as quickly as possible.

"It is not a career-threatening injury. He can still play again this season."

Di Maria: PSG eyeing Champions League final

    angeldimaria-cropped_1xf4wj9a8e0n11njwlicw3zmis.jpg

Angel di Maria says Paris Saint-Germain have set their sights on the Champions League final after opening their European campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win over Malmo.

The Argentina international was at his brilliant best as he scored the opener with a curling effort beyond goalkeeper Johan Wiland four minutes in.

His strike was followed by an Edinson Cavani effort just past the hour-mark in the French capital as made the perfect start to the competition. The club have been knocked out in the quarter-finals of the competition in each of the last three seasons, but Di Maria believes this could be their year.

"We have to take each step at a time. PSG have great momentum," Di Maria told reporters."They reached [the] late stages of the competition in previous years so the goal will be surpassing the quarter-finals and playing the final.

"We have to keep working, step by step, and hopefully things will work out."
PSG - top of the table and unbeaten in Ligue 1 after five rounds - are away to third-placed Reims on Saturday.

Van Gaal frustrated by PSV defeat: We can only blame ourselves

    louis-van-gaal-psv-manchester-united-champions-league-09152015_1p3zh3a0s8svh16wulyujldowa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes his side only have themselves to blame for their 2-1 defeat to PSV.

The Red Devils returned to the Champions League after a year away on Tuesday but goals from Hector Moreno and Luciano Narsingh proved enough for the Eredivisie outfit after Memphis Depay had opened the scoring for the visitors.

The result was further marred by a broken leg suffered by Luke Shaw, but Van Gaal felt his side should have put the game to bed instead of allowing their opponents to get back into it.

"We can only blame ourselves, I think, because we created so many chances," he told reporters.

"After Tottenham I said you have to score one more than the opponent. PSV were very effective, scoring from nothing... a corner kick, a deflected ball, then scoring in the second half from a poor pass.

"We have dominated every game that we have played this season except PSG in preparation.

"We have dominated the game and had most of the chances. But we have lost. It's fantastic for PSV and their fans but we have lost."

    Draxler delighted with Kruse link-up

    juliandraxler-cropped_1s4fyorgb4sr818wpqxagyb1pl.jpg

Wolfsburg's new signing Julian Draxler felt a change in formation which saw him partner Max Kruse in midfield was key to the club's 1-0 Champions League win over CSKA Moscow. The pair combined as Draxler struck the only goal of the game at the Volkswagen Arena on Tuesday night in his side's opening group stage game of the competition.

Coach Dieter Hecking played a 4-1-4-1 formation against the Russian outfit, with Luis Gustavo operating as a holding midfielder behind Kruse and Draxler, who provided support to lone striker Bas Dost.

"I felt very good next to Max in the centre, we can build on that," said the former Schalke man."It worked well, so well because we both did a lot of work defensively."

Kruse added: "It has been seen that we are also able to play other systems. That makes us stronger." However, Draxler said there was still room for improvement and felt Wolfsburg could have finished the game off sooner.

"At home, a 1-0 win and I scored a goal, this is of course very nice," he continued.
"But we could also have had peace of mind sooner. We have kept the game open for too long. But this is to complain at a high level."Especially in the first half we played very good football and we deserved our win in the end."

Speaking about his own performance, Draxler added: "This was an increase compared to my performance in Ingolstadt."But every game is different anyway. This time it has a very good fit."

Morata: Man City win proves Juventus remain one of Europe's best

    morata-cropped_pksu1ii3i6s61onyxjcxkjzh2.jpg

Juventus' Champions League victory over Manchester City shows the club remain one of Europe's strongest sides, according to Alvaro Morata.

The former Real Madrid striker scored a dramatic curling winner with nine minutes remaining as the Serie A champions came from behind to defeat the Premier League side 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

The win provides welcome relief for Massimiliano Allegri and his players after a disastrous start to the new Serie A season, which has seen them fail to pick up a win from their opening three games.

Morata, 22, insisted the slow start to the campaign was natural after there was such a high turnover of players in the close-season but is confident the club remain one of the teams to beat in the tournament."We just need to get used to playing together - that is perfectly normal after so many changes at the club," he said to Mediaset after the match.

"That is the reason why we have made a slow start but we can build on this result now. This is a great starting point for Juve."The most important thing is we won and reminded people that when we play together as we know we can, we are among the best in Europe.

"It is a very important victory for us. I worked hard to help out the defence throughout the game and was fortunate enough to score a goal too." Juventus will look for their first win of the league season when they travel to face Genoa on Sunday.

Pogba will be the best in the world - Ferdinand

    paulpogba-cropped_1ks7cv2uw8h8g1e4qhlakmaxdm.jpg

Paul Pogba is destined to become the world's best player in the next few years, according to Rio Ferdinand.

The 22-year-old has developed into one of the game's most sought-after midfielders during his time at Juventus following his move from Manchester United in 2012.

And Ferdinand insists he has everything required to reach the very pinnacle of the world game.

"I think he has the personality to be the best," the retired defender told BT Sport.

"I think Pogba really will go on to be the best player in the world in the next three or four years. He has got that personality and desire to be the best player.

"The way he trains, the way he looks at his game. He believes in himself like not many other players I have seen.

"Potentially, Pogba can be a Ballon d'Or winner."

Ferdinand admitted Sir Alex Ferguson could have used the France international more prior to his departure but said that is much easier to say now than it was at the time.

"I think he could have used him, but that is with hindsight," the 36-year-old said. "Sir Alex Ferguson would say the same thing.

"I asked Pogba 'Why are you going? Where are you going? You are going to Juventus and that is not as good a league as the Premier League. You are at Manchester United. What are you doing?'

"He looked at me deadpan and went: 'I want to be the best player in the world and I am not playing. I want to go and play.'"

Shaw remains in Eindhoven hospital after surgery

    shaw-cropped_14eu3ys3q83p01a7nbvwpdhrdh.jpg

Manchester United have confirmed that Luke Shaw will stay in hospital in Eindhoven to begin his recovery after undergoing surgery on a broken leg.

The England full-back was stretchered off in the first half of United's 2-1 Champions League defeat to PSV on Tuesday following a challenge from Hector Moreno.

It was later confirmed that Shaw had suffered a double leg fracture and the former Southampton man underwent surgery later on after being taken to hospital.

United have since released an update on the 20-year-old's condition and paid tribute to the care he is receiving in the Netherlands.

"Luke Shaw underwent surgery on his injury on Tuesday night and will remain in hospital in Eindhoven to continue his early recovery," a statement released by the club on Wednesday said.

"Manchester United are grateful for the excellent care he is receiving and would like to thank everyone who has sent messages of support."

Moreno apologised for the challenge after the match, insisting the unfortunate contact with Shaw's leg was entirely accidental.

PSV recovered from Memphis Depay's goal on his return to Philips Stadion to secure a 2-1 win thanks to headers from Moreno and Luciano Narsingh.
