I think ADS is still not mandatory within colombo FIR. we use ADS-C to get periodic updates roughly every half an hour in oceanic airspace. but separation is still procedural until it comes into radar range
do you know what is the reason for 4R-ALO not equipped with ADS-B?
no, I dont know either.![]()
only thing i can think of is the cost.
it's not going to be of much use in our oceanic airspace anyway, cuz we can't put ground stations in the ocean.
We use ADS-C instead, which is relayed to ratmalana ACC via a satellite link,
the current requirement is that they should send a position update via ADS-C every haf an hour.. but since there's an inherent delay of more than 6 minutes between making the request on CPDLC and getting the position report, it's of no use for air traffic separation.
I think they use it in Melbourne FIR for separation because for some reason their HF reception is better than ours, so they can get real time position updates over radio
Does it reduce the cost significantly? I think ALL,ALM,ALN also belongs to same order. why only with ALO

I have no idea about the cost of these things..
But i can't think of any other plausible explanation either

what is mode-s? I saw somewhere that ALO is only equipped with mode-s![]()
It's the SSR transponder type.
Mode A transmits Squawk
Mode C transmits Squawk + Altitude
Mode S transmits those two plus some other information
In sri lanka it's mandatory for all aircraft to carry Mode C transponder

"Hello...
As promised I did some digging on this. I've spoken with an avionics engineer and his idea was most probably the FR24 database is not updated. He said the 'T3CAS' system has a significant difference in ALO so probably that might be the cause. ( read more about Thales T3CAS : https://www.thalesgroup.com/en/world...erospace/t3cas )
ADS-B is not essential for FR24 tracking, our old aircrafts are not equipped with that anyway."

commercial airlines don't take decisions based on non essential systems like FR24. Their decisions are based on Air Navigation Regulations on countries they intend to operate..
