A teenager hunting for birds in the jungle of a Philippine island claims to have stumbled upon a fuselage “full of skeletons” and a Malaysian flag, and authorities believe it could be from missing Flight MH370.
The coastal wreckage in Tawi Tawi was under investigation by local authorities in Malaysia’s Sabah region Monday.
The finding was reported by Jamil Omar of Borneo, 46, who says his nephew made the grim discovery in September, but didn’t realize what it was as he has no access to television or newspapers.
“There was a skeleton still in the pilot’s seat. The pilot had his safety belt on and the communication gear attached to his head and ears,” Omar told local police, Free Malaysia Today reports.
The youth and pals found “many skeletons” in the fuselage, Omar said, some still wearing seatbelts, and more human bones nearby.
The teen also allegedly swiped a piece of fabric to use as a blanket, only to discover later it was a Malaysian flag.
“I have told the [Department of Civil Aviation] to look into the report. We don’t know if the report is true, so we need to verify it first … Let’s not speculate and give space to the DCA to conduct its investigation,” Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai told local media.
The claim comes five weeks after French experts confirmed a piece of wing that washed up on Reunion Island near Madagascar was indeed from the missing Malaysia Airlines plane.
The Beijing-bound Boeing 777 was carrying 239 passengers and crew members when it vanished into thin air an hour after departing from Kuala Lumpur on March 8 last year.

Thomson to launch Sri Lanka next year
Thomson is introducing Sri Lanka for winter 2016 and is eyeing up other long haul destinations in Asia and the Caribbean.
Weekly, direct flights to Sri Lanka will operate from London Gatwick on the operator's 787 Dreamliner aircraft, with various stay and tour options.
Managing director Nick Longman said prices have not yet been decided internally but would be released next month.
He also said the destination could become year-round, depending the success of the winter programme.
Meanwhile, the operator is considering Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia along with British Caribbean destinations including Antigua, St Lucia and Barbados.
The announcement came as Thomson and First Choice released the results of a survey of 2,000 adults which showed 77% are happy to travel nine hours or more to reach their 'dream' destination.
It also found 89% now travel long haul at least once every five years, and 21% travel long haul every year.
"With other long haul destinations in the pipeline, we expect to see this trend continue as British holidaymakers look to visit new places they may never have been to before," said Longman.

Called a microlattice, it is so strong the firm says an egg wrapped in the material would survive a 25 story drop .

The material, called Microlattice, is a 3D open-cellular polymer structure made up of interconnected hollow tubes, each with a wall 1,000 times thinner than a human hair.
'One of the main applications that we've been looking into is structural components in aerospace,' said Sophia Yang, Research Scientist of Architected Materials at HRL Labs who worked with Boeing on the project.
'The trick is to fabricate a lattice of interconnected hollow tubes with a wall thickness of 100 nanometers, 1,000 times thinner than a human hair,' Dr. Tobias Schaedler of HRL said.
In addition to its ultra-low density, the material's cellular architecture gives rise to unprecedented mechanical behavior for a metal, including complete recovery from compression exceeding 50% strain and extraordinarily high energy absorption.
Originally developed for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the novel material could be used for battery electrodes, catalyst supports, and acoustic, vibration or shock energy damping.
HRL Laboratories also announced today that it will develop new ultra-lightweight materials for future aerospace vehicles and structures under NASA's Game Changing Development Program.
These new materials can enable NASA to reduce the mass of spacecraft for deep space exploration by 40 percent and are necessary for the journey to Mars and beyond.
The focus of HRL's effort is to develop ultralight sandwich panels based on our ultra-light lattice core materials.
Attaching thin, stiff facesheets to the top and bottom surfaces of a relatively thick, lightweight core makes such structures.
Sandwich structures provide high torsional and bending rigidity at low weight and have become the standard for lightweight design in the aerospace industry.

While foam and honeycomb cores are used currently, additional weight savings and performance increases are sought from advanced cores.
Led by Dr. Tobias Schaedler, HRL's team will develop lighter and stronger cores with innovative truss architectures that will be combined with carbon fiber composite facesheets.
The HRL approach combines ultra-stiff and ultra-strong materials (such as nanocrystalline metals) that provide higher strength than conventional materials with highly optimized truss architectures that enable unprecedented degrees of freedom to tailor the mechanical performance.
'We are building on our breakthrough invention of ultralight metallic microlattices and will mature this technology to be applied in the next generation of space vehicles,' says Dr. Schaedler.
