Neuer takes responsibility for Arsenal opener

    manuelneuer-cropped_1ikh4wpqspwm11b709c7y61mu1.jpg

Manuel Neuer insisted he played well in Bayern Munich's 2-0 Champions League defeat to Arsenal on Tuesday - although he did admit responsibility for the crucial opening goal.

Neuer produced a string of fine saves to keep Arsenal at bay, the pick of which being a stunning first-half block to keep out a Theo Walcott header, but then blundered horribly as Bayern fell behind.

Germany goalkeeper Neuer opted to try to claim a hopeful Santi Cazorla punt into the box but got nowhere near it, missing his punch completely, allowing Olivier Giroud to bundle the ball home.

Mesut Ozil added a late second, despite Neuer's best attempts to prevent his close-range effort crossing the line.

Neuer told UEFA.com: "Basically, I played well. But it was my big mistake that led to Arsenal’s first goal.

"I think a draw would have been a more appropriate result."

Neuer praises 'inspirational' Van der Sar

    manuelneuer-cropped_14xwf3dbx4p1j14i1mlt6sjvi8.jpg

Manuel Neuer has revealed that he has taken inspiration from Edwin van der Sar and says the Netherlands great reinvented the discipline of goalkeeping.

The Bayern Munich shot-stopper is renowned for being comfortable with the ball at his feet, helping to popularise the role of sweeper-keeper during his trophy-laden time with Bayern and world champions Germany.

Neuer produced a wonder save from Theo Walcott in Tuesday's Champions League defeat to Arsenal before being culpable for Olivier Giroud's opener at the Emirates Stadium.

But Neuer says he refuses to play with fear, citing former Manchester United and Ajax goalkeeper Van der Sar as a huge role model for a braver style of play.

"I do not think I was the main protagonist. One of the very first to have brought a new perspective was Edwin Van der Sar, who played a lot with his feet and allowed the position to enter a new phase," he told France Football.

"I was inspired by his style of play. I enjoyed the philosophy of Ajax – either watching videos or following their matches."

Neuer was nominated for the Ballon d'Or last year and has become one of the world's premier goalkeepers – winning three Bundesliga titles, two DFB-Pokals and the Champions League.

"We must be aware of the risks taken and the dangers that can happen if my distribution is hazardous," he added.

"But fear is the last feeling I experience, you just have to have confidence in your qualities. I have gained a lot of experience and have developed a kind of instinct that allows me to decide whether I go or not.

"I am convinced by my style of play, so I take risks without much hesitation. I love to tackle, especially when the grass is wet, but my main aim is to be a complete goalkeeper who can do everything."

Totti closes in on Roma return

    francesco-totti-cropped_1fpxf1v5cbpcx1tpk4n3dlynni.jpg

Francesco Totti is edging closer to a comeback after Roma confirmed his recovery from a thigh injury is progressing well.

The experienced forward picked up the injury in the 5-1 win over Carpi last month but began work in the gym at the start of October.

Following further tests, Roma have revealed the 39-year-old is recovering quickly and will now start to increase his training workload.

"Francesco Totti is continuing to make progress as he bids to return to full fitness after sustaining a thigh injury on September 26," a statement on Wednesday read.

"Tests carried out on Totti today revealed further improvement in the injured muscle in his right thigh.

"The Giallorossi No.10, who recently struck his 300th goal for the club, will gradually increase his workload with the club's medical and coaching staff monitoring the situation every day. "

Totti was initially expected to be out for close to a month.

    Klose rules out Germany return

    miroslavklose-cropped_1f047squ6ou9x1o9lm13lc9u1q.jpg

Miroslav Klose has ruled out a return to the German national team for Euro 2016 and says head coach Joachim Low has plenty of attacking options to select from.

Lazio striker Klose announced his international retirement four weeks after helping Joachim Low's side lift the World Cup in 2014, bringing an end to his 13-year association with the four-time world champions.

During his career Klose became the all-time record goalscorer at the finals with 16 goals, his final strike coming in the 7-1 semi-final demolition of Brazil in Belo Horizonte.

Klose has struggled for fitness this season due to a thigh injury, but his name has been linked with an international return. However, the 37-year-old insists those suggestions are wide of the mark.

"Do you know how many times they’ve called me?" Klose said. "I told the coach I had made up my mind.

"When I make a decision I never go back. I'm proud when I think back to my last game for my country [the World Cup final] and what we raised to the sky.

"It was the most beautiful moment of my life. We have so many talents, the German national team has so many strong players and it will be the same after me.

"If [Mario] Gomez is fit, he's very good. [Mario] Gotze is very young, but he's on the right track. I've never seen a professional like him, so far he’s done everything like a great. We have to give young people time, there are great players in the Under-20s and Under-21s."

    Klopp: I'm misunderstood

    klopp-cropped_1fa5x058pfmfs17lw7fct9aevp.jpg

Jurgen Klopp tackled the misunderstanding of “full-throttle football” ahead of his first home game as Liverpool manager.

The German, who is preparing for the Europa League encounter against Rubin Kazan at Anfield on Thursday evening, cleared up the fallacy around his philosophy.

Klopp’s famed high-intensity approach was already on display as Liverpool earned a point at White Hart Lane in his opening game, with observers immediately questioning whether such a style could be sustainable.

That query was put to the 48-year-old at his pre-match press conference at Melwood, to which Klopp responded: "The biggest misunderstanding is that always people ask me if it’s possible to play this kind of football.

"When I started at Mainz, they would ask me each week, then at [Borussia] Dortmund they would ask me every three days. The thing is, you don’t have to play like this for 90 minutes.

"Your only possibility to learn is to start like this, but if you have the ball, you don’t have to run like crazy. If you get a better feeling for this kind of defending, the wild way is only the start.”

Klopp referenced Arsenal’s Champions League triumph over Bayern Munich on Tuesday night as an example of intelligent pressure. Arsene Wenger's men allowed the German giants to have the ball, they pressed well, and profited from dangerous possession.

"If you watched Arsenal against Bayern yesterday, Bayern had 70 per cent of the ball and lost the game 2-0. That’s football," he explained.

"That was one of the first Arsenal games I saw when they played defensively – their defending was very disciplined with a good plan against Bayern, and they won the game.
