PAYPAL IN TALKS WITH SRI LANKA TO ALLOW INWARD PAYMENTS
The regional head of PayPal will have discussions with Sri Lanka’s officials over freeing up Paypal’s inward payments for citizens in the country, according to Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure Minister Harin Fernando.
“Regional head of PayPal will visit Sri Lanka this Wednesday. He is scheduled to have talks with Central Bank Governor and Finance Minister about this matter,” he said.
Paypal is a worldwide payments system where small payments can be sent to over 190 countries at the moment. Paypal transactions are available in most countries but some, including Sri Lanka are yet to allow payments to be received and withdrawn via Paypal. Sri Lanka has already freed outward payments by Paypal accounts, which can be linked to credit cards. But unfortunately, a service or product oriented business cannot be run from Sri Lanka since there is no option to receive payment. This doesn’t make much sense really.
You’d expect that currency coming into the country would be a good thing. There’s a growing micro-work workforce in many Asian countries. Here’s hoping Sri Lanka finally gets on board.
