OFFICIAL: Watford confirm Mazzarri as manager for 2016-17 season

    3160242_heroa.jpg

Watford announced the appointment of Walter Mazzarri as their new manager on Saturday.

The former Napoli and Inter boss has signed a three-year deal at Vicarage Road and will take over from Quique Sanchez Flores from July 1.

Flores led Watford in an impressive campaign following their return to the Premier League, with the Hornets securing survival and a comfortable 13th-placed finish.

Nevertheless, the Pozzo-owned club opted to activate a break clause in Flores' contract following a difference in opinion over their performance and have moved quickly to secure his replacement before the new season starts, installing Italian Mazzarri as their new boss.

Watford chief executive Scott Duxbury commented: "Walter has been the target of a number of approaches for his services, so we're delighted to secure him as head coach here at Watford.

"We're thoroughly looking forward to working with such a highly-regarded coach, with the progress and development of the club always remaining the highest priority."

Mazzarri's last job was at the helm of Inter, where he was sacked midway through his second season in charge in November 2014 after his side failed to impress in Serie A.

The 54-year-old had made his name guiding Sampdoria and Napoli prior to that, with the latter challenging for the Scudetto in his final two campaigns in charge.

Barcelona agree long-term extension on Nike deal

    lionel-messi-luis-suarez-neymar-croppedjpg_bucwa9jqxabb1m45uuivlylcu.jpg

Barcelona have extended their sponsorship deal with Nike, which was due to expire in June 2018.

The Spanish champions first teamed up with the American sportswear giant in 1998 and both parties have now agreed on a new long-term agreement.

A Barca statement read: "Barcelona and Nike have extended their current sponsorship deal, which was due to end on 30 June 2018. The long-term agreement is a landmark in global football and builds upon a highly successful partnership."The details of the agreement will be reported and will have to be ratified at the next General Assembly.

"Barcelona and Nike signed their first partnership agreement back in 1998 and have experienced two decades of extraordinary football together, with the club winning four Champions Leagues, 10 Ligas, four editions of the Copa del Rey and three Club World Cups, among others."Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu voiced his delight with the new agreement.

He commented: "Through this new agreement with Nike we are extending a strategic alliance for the club, while also reinforcing our global position, hand in hand with the leading global sports brand."We are excited by this new agreement and are confident that we’ll be able to celebrate continued sporting successes together."

Xhaka pictured at Arsenal training ground ahead of move

    granit-xhaka-gladbach-bundesliga-2016_1cve0cx0yxh7m18hzlcle3ojtl.jpg

Granit Xhaka's move to Arsenal appears close to being confirmed after pictures of the player posing for photos at the club's London Colney training ground were leaked.

The 23-year-old arrived in London on Friday for his medical ahead of signing a four-year deal with the Gunners and photos have now emerged of Xhaka in Arsenal's new 2016-17 home kit - which has yet to be officially unveiled.

The Switzerland international has been courted by Arsene Wenger's side for several months and, after agreeing a €43 million (£33.3m) fee with Borussia Monchengladbach, he is expected to be the first arrival of a busy transfer window for Arsenal this summer.

Twitter user Valon Demiri, who is based in Kosovo, posted the photos on social media after reportedly receiving them from someone inside Xhaka's camp. The midfielder made the trip to London with his parents, brother (not pictured) and wife to undergo his medical and pose for official photos ahead of the confirmation of his transfer.

Griezmann one of three best players in the world, claims Simeone

    antoinegriezmann-cropped_1iqsdpzwenvb01vffv163j4om0.jpg

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has hailed Antoine Griezmann ahead of next week's Champions League final against Real Madrid and labelled the France international as one of the three best players in the world.

Griezmann has been a key figure for Atletico this campaign, scoring 32 goals in 53 appearances in all competitions, and Simeone puts him in the same bracket as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Griezmann clearly has a lot of talent. He has worked very hard, pushed himself and knows how to listen," Simeone told reporters."The best way to improve in any job is to listen. Without doubt he is one of the best three players in the world."

Simeone also had his say on Saul Niguez, who netted a crucial goal in the semi-final win over Bayern Munich and praised the midfielder's progress."Saul has had a great season, he has made a lot of progress," Simeone added.

"He has worked hard to come this far. His mental strength can hopefully keep pushing him to always want more and never settle for anything."Simeone is not relying on Griezmann or Saul to make the difference against Madrid, though, as he is adamant it is all about the team.

"I do not expect any individuals to make the difference," the Argentine said.
"I expect the collective to do its job rather than focus on individuals. Individuals can shine as part of the collective."

Lyon confirm West Ham's €40m Lacazette bid rejected

    3130352_heroa.jpg

Lyon have confirmed they rejected West Ham's €40 million (£31m) bid for Alexandre Lacazette, hinting the striker opted against the move.

As reported by Goal earlier in May, West Ham's club-record bid - their second for Lacazette, following an initial offer of £23.7m - was swiftly rejected by Lyon after the 24-year-old expressed a lack of interest.

West Ham are expected to return with an improved offer, with Enner Valencia likely to make way, and Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas insists any decision on Lacazette's future is down to the player.

"For a sale to be made, all three parties must agree. We have refused several offers, the most important from West Ham for €40m and we refused it," Aulas told Le Progres.

"It is an answer that says I want to keep him, but I'm not sure because ultimately it is he who will decide.

"I do not want on August 28, ahead of the Champions League, to find ourselves in the same situation as Monaco [who sold Anthony Martial to Manchester United last summer].

"Ideally, he will stay. If he has an offer that he can't refuse then it will come through me, and that's it."

Ronaldo guarantees at least 50 goals per season, claims Ramos

    cristiano-ronaldo-sergio-ramos-cropped_vwcet2i1japq1u6lnmimp8l70.jpg

Sergio Ramos feels Cristiano Ronaldo guarantees at least 50 goals per season and hopes he can inspire Real Madrid to Champions League glory.

Ronaldo has enjoyed yet another prolific season, scoring 51 times in 47 appearances, including 16 in 11 Champions League matches, ahead of next Saturday's clash with Atletico Madrid at San Siro.

Speculation surrounding the Portuguese's future continues, with Paris Saint-Germain rumoured to have made an offer for his services, but Madrid captain Ramos told UEFA.com: "It's difficult to imagine a Real Madrid without Cristiano. We're very happy to have him here because he guarantees at least 50 goals every season.

"It's very difficult to stay at this level for so many years but he's managed it. As a club we've got this guarantee for as long as he's here, and that's a real luxury.

"I think he has a special relationship with the Champions League. Nobody can argue with the fact he's a special player who drives the team forward and he's been doing it for a long time."Ramos continued: "I think we deserve to be in the final in Milan. Being honest, it's not been an easy road.

"We made it through the group stage against great teams like PSG. We had a bad game against Wolfsburg, but we turned it around brilliantly at home. Then we knocked out a top side in Manchester City in the semi-finals.

"We're pleased that our hard work has reaped rewards despite the ups and downs we've had. We'll play in the final in Milan against a great rival and that's very satisfying."

Koke: Atletico in better shape to beat Real than in 2014

    koke-cropped_qvwwqgrenf8k1f47uesjn95vs.jpg

Koke feels Atletico Madrid are in a better shape to beat Real Madrid in next week's Champions League final than they were in 2014.

Atletico were beaten 4-1 after extra-time by their great rivals two years ago, but that meeting in Lisbon came just a week after an intense, league title-winning 1-1 draw with Barcelona at Camp Nou.This time around, Diego Simeone's team will have had two weeks rest before their showdown at San Siro, and Koke feels they will be much fresher.

"We've had more time to prepare than the 2014 final in Lisbon, that year we'd just played the league decider against Barcelona and were tired, this year we're better physically," he said at a news conference.

"We've had two weeks to prepare and have done so very enthusiastically."I think we have to be better defensively and take advantage of their errors, though they have improved a lot with Casemiro in the middle. We are going to watch videos of them to see where their weak points are.

"We have to play the final like it's our last because you never know.
"If we win, we'll get to feel that emotion that we've grown up dreaming of, and it'll be even more powerful than we've imagined."

Rangers 2-3 Hibernian: Late drama ends 114-year wait for Scottish Cup glory

    stokes-cropped_kjxnofwq6a4j1gxfabwibfwxs.jpg

Hibernian scored in stoppage time to stun Rangers with a 3-2 victory at Hampden Park, ending their 114-year wait for Scottish Cup glory.

Hibs had lost 10 consecutive finals since their last success in the competition back in 1902, but celebrated wildly on Saturday after captain David Gray headed in a 92nd-minute winner.

Rangers had beaten Alan Stubbs' men to promotion from the Scottish Championship this season, but miss out on glory in heart-breaking fashion having got past rivals Celtic in the semi-finals.

Hibs took the lead inside three minutes when Anthony Stokes, on loan from Celtic, charged into the box unchallenged from the left and rolled an impressive finish into the bottom corner. But Rangers levelled with their first attempt on target after 27 minutes through Kenny Miller's bullet header from James Tavernier's accurate cross.

Stokes almost made an instant response at the other end when he cannoned a long-range drive off the foot of the post, before Rangers were inches away from taking the lead themselves when Miller thumped another header off the woodwork.

Mark Warburton's side took the lead after 64 minutes in spectacular fashion. Andy Halliday collected possession 25 yards from goal and unleashed a magnificent left-footed shot past goalkeeper Conrad Logan as they appeared to take a huge step towards victory. However, the impressive Stokes brought a thrilling final back level with 10 minutes remaining, flicking a header past Wes Foderingham from Liam Henderson's corner.

And history was made two minutes into stoppage time when Gray thumped in a header from another Henderson corner, with a massive pitch invasion and jubilant celebrations from the Hibs contingent following the final whistle.

:love::love:Crystal Palace 1-2 Manchester United (AET): Lingard stunner seals comeback victory for Van Gaal's men

    3203172_heroa.jpg

A brilliant strike from Jesse Lingard took Manchester United to their first silverware in almost three years, as the Red Devils triumphed 2-1 over Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final.

United fell behind to substitute Jason Puncheon's 78th-minute strike, but Juan Mata levelled within 180 seconds to take the game to extra time.

Chris Smalling – earlier embroiled in controversy after hauling back a goal-bound Connor Wickham – saw red just before the end of the first additional 15 minutes following a foul on Yannick Bolasie, but substitute Lingard proved the Reds heroas they etched their name on the famous trophy for a record-equalling 12th time and first since 2004,casting aside pre-match speculation that Van Gaal is to be replaced by Jose Mourinho.

The Dutchman's failure to steer United into the Champions League is a key catalyst for his likely exit, but the 64-year-old can at least boast a major honour from his two-year tenure after Saturday's deserved victory.

However, it was heartbreak for Palace and their boss Alan Pardew, who played when the club last reached the Cup final – United prevailing back in 1990 after a replay – and managed West Ham in their 2006 penalty shootout loss to Liverpool.

United controlled the first half and hit the woodwork twice in the second period through Marouane Fellaini and Anthony Martial, before Puncheon stunned them with a fine near-post finish.

But the London club's joy was cut short, Mata's deflected volley squeezing through Joel Ward's legs on the line in the 81st minute before Lingard – on for the Spanish goalscorer in stoppage time – was cast in the role of match-winner in a result that sent the Hammers into the Europa League.

Van Gaal welcomed back Fellaini from suspension, with Mata handed a start, while Palace returned to a more familiar starting XI after making numerous changes for the 4-1 loss to Southampton.

United, who finished the Premier League season later than scheduled on Tuesday after the bomb scare prior to their final game against AFC Bournemouth, made a bright start following a kick-off delayed by the pre-match entertainment.

Wayne Hennessey twice claimed excellent catches from searching crosses to calm any nerves, while Marcus Rashford – who hobbled off injured at the end of a week in which he was named in England's provisional Euro 2016 squad – forced a timely intervention from Pape Souare after a strong run and shot.

Palace sprung forward on a rare 18th-minute counter-attack and saw Wickham pulled back by Smalling, with Pardew livid at referee Mark Clattenburg's decision to stop play as his forward had managed to shrug off the defender and roll the ball into an empty net after the whistle had gone.

David De Gea tipped the subsequent free-kick over the crossbar and Mata almost rubbed salt in the wounds with a skidding effort that Hennessey clawed away midway through the half.

A deft turn from Rashford had Palace chasing back in desperation as the teenager's cross was steered goalwards by Martial and Ward made the block.
Ex-United winger Wilfried Zaha saw his run into the box halted by a recovering Wayne Rooney, the United captain proving his value at both ends of the field in a deeper role that looks set to become his forte.

Fellaini – who scored in the semi-final win over Everton – served notice of his intent early in the second half, rifling a shot against the frame of the goal and past a motionless Hennessey, who saw Martial's header strike the left-hand post just past the hour mark.Rashford was forced off 20 minutes from time and replaced by Ashley Young, while Palace swapped Yohan Cabaye for Puncheon, whose one-touch control and fierce finish broke the deadlock to prompt a touchline jig from Pardew.

His apparently rehearsed moves were quickly put on the back-burner, though, as Mata wiped out that lead, though Zaha – pictured in tears prior to the game – could have snatched a winner when he fired into the side netting at the death.

Bolasie drilled wide in the first half of extra time, while Smalling got his marching orders just before the break, but United shrugged off that setback as Lingard lashed home brilliantly from 18 yards in the 110th minute to salvage an otherwise uninspiring season for the Old Trafford club.
