Gulf Air made an emergency landing at Manila airport due to engine failure on Friday.
The Gulf Air A330-200 Flight 155 with 229 on board to Bahrain had to return to Philippine capital airport due to heat-damaged engine, officials said.
The Airbus 330-200 ignited a grass fire at the edge of the runway as it took off and smoke was seen inside the cabin after the plane was airborne, said Ma. Fe Malte, an airport traffic management officer.
Floramina Munzon, a passenger who was seated near the left wing, said she heard something like an explosion after the plane lifted from the ground.
As the twin-engine jet landed safely, the airport's rescue team and firetrucks rushed to the plane. It dumped fuel before landing, but there were no flames and no need to use fire retardant, Malte said. She said the left engine was damaged by the intense heat.

PIA's newly leased A-330 lands at Karachi Airport few minutes ago.
1st of the 3 aircraft leased from Sri Lankan Airlines has landed at Karachi Airport.
PIA's COO, Mr. Bernd Hildenbrand signed a wet lease contract for Three (A-330) Aircraft with SriLankan Airlines last month.
With the new arrival PIA will commence its premier service mainly from Lahore to London.
Pakistan Minister Kabir Hashim said earlier "This would be on a wet lease where SriLankan pilots and crew would be operating it.”
The Minister disclosed that "We are now committed to pay US $ 1.4 million a month for these aircraft to the AerCap, company while the industry is leasing them out for amounts of US$ 900,000 to 1,000,000 a month.
Debt laden Sri Lankan Airlines was paying at least US$ 400,000 dollars (Rs. 58 million) a month extra and PIA has to continue this for 12 more years.
