'De Gea second only to Schmeichel' - Kanchelskis warns Man Utd they must keep Madrid target

    neville-xi-david-de-gea_w2xy936me9d1kies91hl70ly.jpg

Manchester United must fend off interest in David de Gea and keep one of the “best they’ve ever had” at Old Trafford, says Andrei Kanchelskis. The Spain international continues to be heavily linked with a return to his homeland at Real Madrid.

The La Liga heavyweights have been hunting his signature for some time, with there a desire on their part to bring the former Atletico goalkeeper back to the Spanish capital.

United have, through a combination of hard work and good fortune, held firm so far and Kanchelskis believes they must continue to do so, with De Gea having shown himself to be capable of emulating the achievements of iconic figures from the club’s past.

The former Red Devils winger told talkSPORT: “After Peter Schmeichel, David de Gea is the best goalkeeper in Manchester United’s history.“For me, it’s Peter Schmeichel number one, David de Gea number two. He’s one of the best they’ve ever had.

“If De Gea left, Manchester United would have a big, big problem.“He’s an excellent goalkeeper. He plays a huge role for the team and the defence."Pressed on whether United should be looking to put fresh terms to De Gea and pay him whatever he wants, Kanchelskis added: “Oh yes, yes.

“It’s down to the club and the chairman.“He’s the number one goalkeeper in the world, they have to keep him.”De Gea is currently tied to a contract until 2019, with that deal including the option for a 12-month extension to be triggered.

Kante and Griezmann nominated for top French award, but no place for Pogba

    hd-ngolo-kante-chelsea_1kq702pzjmwez1aikj2o6nxccz.jpg

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante is in the running to add the best French player abroad award to his PFA Player of the Year prize. The Blues star has already seen his efforts this season recognised in England, and could be about to receive similar acclaim from his homeland.

Kante has been named on a four-man shortlist for the Trophees UNFP du football prize alongside Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and Borussia Dortmund teenager Ousmane Dembele.

Griezmann is the current holder of the award, which was handed out for the first time in 2016.

He will be looking to defend his crown 12 months on, but faces fierce competition.
Kante has emerged as a global superstar since trading life in France for that in the Premier League, with a second English top-flight title now within sight for the 26-year-old.Dembele has also seen his profile continue to rise after securing a high-profile transfer to Germany.

Benzema remains a regular source of goals at La Liga giants Madrid, but has faced criticism at times this season. He was also among the contenders for the 2016 prize, along with Dimitri Payet and Paul Pogba.

That pair have dropped out of reckoning this year, with Payet now back at Marseille after forcing through a transfer from West Ham and Pogba yet to justify the record-breaking £89 million fee which took him from Juventus to Manchester United.

Bayern Munich sign Coman from Juventus for €28m

    kingsley-coman_femec65r5t3n1ouh7ktjn7h7o.jpg

Bayern Munich have announced that they have signed Kingsley Coman from Juventus in a permanent deal worth €28million.The France international forward has signed a contract until June 2020 after Bayern agreed to pay the reported €21million fee required to buy him outright.

"Kingsley Coman is an important building block for the future of our team, so we decided to take up the option," chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said via the club's official website."Kingsley is a player with great potential. We're convinced that he will help us in the coming years."

Coman joined Bayern on a two-year loan deal in 2015, with the Bundesliga champions possessing the option to finalise a permanent deal at any time before April 30.The total cost of the transfer includes the two instalments which make up the €7m Bayern paid to Juve during the loan.

There had been reports in France that the 20-year-old was having second thoughts about the prospect of committing his long-term future to the Allianz Arena.

Premier League clubs including Chelsea and Manchester City, managed by former Bayern boss Pep Guardiola, had been linked with a possible bid.He has made 23 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring twice.

Sevilla 2 Celta Vigo 1: Ben Yedder turns up the heat on Atleti

    benyedder-cropped_1td737447lhie1wh6yrf4xcfaq.jpg

Sevilla made the most of their game in hand to maintain the pressure on third-placed Atletico Madrid with a 2-1 LaLiga victory over 10-man Celta Vigo on Thursday.

Jorge Sampaoli's men came into the match three points adrift of Atleti, but goals from Joaquin Correa and Wissam Ben Yedder, either side of Iago Aspas's penalty, saw them pull level with four games to go - although Diego Simeone's men have the head-to-head advantage and remain third.

Following a bright start by visiting Celta, Sevilla started to apply the pressure and came closest to taking a first-half lead when Clement Lenglet headed a hanging cross against the base of the right-hand post.

But Sevilla were perhaps fortunate to avoid conceding a penalty in the closing stages of the half after Pione Sisto's fierce strike hit the arms of Vicente Iborra as the home captain attempted to make a block in the box.

Correa's fourth league goal of the season broke the deadlock just three minutes into the second period. The Argentine picked up the ball on the right-hand side of the area, before drifting inside along the 18-yard line and picking his spot to put Sevilla in front.

Having been denied a penalty earlier in the game, Celta swiftly pulled level from the spot after John Guidetti was held back by Lenglet.Sergio Rico dived to his right but was left to pick the ball out of the net as former Sevilla striker Aspas fired straight down the middle.

Pablo Hernandez was sent off for a second bookable offence three minutes later, before Sevilla twice struck the crossbar as they sought what would surely be the winning goal.

And that goal eventually came in the 79th minute - Ben Yedder touching home a squared Samir Nasri pass from close range.

OFFICIAL: Steven Gerrard will manage Liverpool Under-18s next season

    hd-steven-gerrard_1sr1qkh7ymxve14kgw4b6l9xpq.jpg

Liverpool have confirmed Steven Gerrard will become the manager of their Under-18 side ahead of the new season as he continues his advancement in coaching.

The 36-year-old, who retired from playing last November before embarking on the next phase of his career with the club’s Academy in February, will begin his duties this summer.

The Reds legend was initially tasked with a floating role at Kirkby, but having impressed with his attitude and aptitude, he’ll succeed Neil Critchley in the post, who will take charge of the Under-23s. "I have really enjoyed my time at the Academy so far and feel I have learnt a lot from the coaching staff here already,” Gerrard said.

“After speaking to Alex [Inglethorpe], we feel as though it is time for me to step up and manage my own team."Neil has done a fantastic job with the U18s, so I hope I can continue where he left off, encouraging and nurturing players into the U23s and eventually the first-team setup."

On the decision to give Gerrard the responsibility of overseeing a team, Academy director Inglethorpe added: "Steven has brought invaluable experience and knowledge to us since joining us, passing on some fantastic advice and guidance to our younger players.

“We both feel now is the perfect time for him to take the next step in his coaching career and manage his own team."The U18 players can undoubtedly only learn from having someone like Steven in charge and we have no doubt that he will prove to be a huge success in the position.”

Critchley’s promotion to U23s manager follows a near four-year stint as boss of the Under-18s, during which time the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Woodburn and Ovie Ejaria have progressed from that level to the first-team.

"This is also a fantastic opportunity for Neil to step up too and manage the U23s team,” Inglethorpe said.“He has done a brilliant job with the U18s since joining us in 2013 and I am sure he will continue to help with the progression of players into the first team."Mike Garrity, currently managing the U23s, will form part of Critchley’s backroom team.

:love:Manchester City 0 Manchester United 0: Mourinho's 10 men hold on after Fellaini madness

    fellaini-cropped_15irntpfjb4pe1i2o35lmmn06c.jpg

Marouane Fellaini was sent off for a late headbutt on Sergio Aguero but Manchester United held on for a 0-0 draw against local rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday.

Just 19 seconds after being booked for a foul on Aguero, Fellaini pushed his head into the City striker following another clash and was shown a straight red card by referee Martin Atkinson in the 84th minute.

United – without injured top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic – had produced the sort of defensive, pragmatic performance that is manager Jose Mourinho's specialty, and they stayed solid for the closing minutes to extend their unbeaten run to 24 matches – their longest such streak in a single top-flight season.

Yet it is a result that does little to boost either side's hopes of finishing in the top four and securing a place in next season's Champions League, with City remaining one point and one position clear of fifth-placed United.

Pep Guardiola's team were the dominant force throughout and should have taken the lead as early as the ninth minute, but the clinical instinct that has seen Sergio Aguero net in each of his last six outings deserted him as he struck the upright from close range.

Ander Herrera - joined in midfield by Michael Carrick due to Paul Pogba's injury-enforced absence - spurned United's best opportunity of the match when he evaded his marker to meet a free-kick at the back post but somehow failed to steer his header on target.

Mourinho's side failed to maintain their counter-attacking threat in the second half and City were unable to unlock the stoic United defence - the loss of David Silva to injury in Sunday's FA Cup semi-final defeat proving influential.

Claudio Bravo, who endured a horror debut at Old Trafford last September, was a spectator for much of the second half and went off on a stretcher with a left calf injury in the 79th minute - the first of a series of dramatic closing events.

After Fellaini's dismissal, substitute Gabriel Jesus thought he had marked his first appearance since February 13 with a stoppage-time winner, only to turn and see the offside flag correctly raised.

Mourinho opted for Marcus Rashford to lead the line and left captain Wayne Rooney – the highest-scoring player in the history of this fixture – on the bench, with the young striker stretching the City defence and setting up Herrera for a teasing cross inside just two minutes, Pablo Zabaleta turning to clear.

City had a chance to move ahead seven minutes later but Aguero could only divert Kevin De Bruyne's low cross onto the outside of the upright from inside the six-yard box.

Bravo almost gifted United a goal when he needlessly palmed Anthony Martial's deflected, looping cross towards the penalty spot, before recovering to block Henrikh Mkhitaryan's subsequent driven effort.

While Bravo looked fallible at one end, David de Gea proved impeccable at the other with a brilliant diving save to deny Aguero's curling 25-yard strike before getting down to his right to keep out a low drive from Aleksandar Kolarov.

Fernandinho's impetuous tackle on Herrera provided the main flashpoint of the first half, but the Spain international will have gone into half-time wondering how he failed to find the target with a free header at the back post from Rashford's left-wing free-kick.

City remained on top in the second half but De Bruyne and Aguero were unable to hit the target with efforts from outside the box before the hour mark, United struggling to get out of their own half.

Guardiola's men continued to push and had to replace the injured Bravo with Willy Caballero 11 minutes from time when he was forced into a rare moment of second-half action.

Fellaini's moment of madness handed City a boost in their quest for a late equaliser, but Jesus' tap-in from a cross by Aguero – who volleyed wide at the death – was correctly ruled out as the spoils were shared.

Despite failing to open up a four-point gap on their fifth-placed opponents, City will feel more confident of securing a return to European football's top table next season due to a comparatively easier run-in.

:)Manchester United equal club best unbeaten run in top-flight season

    antonio-valencia-manchester-united-leroy-sane-manchester-city_1e6aq2i9e979l1d6tzzeu2wgml.jpg

Manchester United have run off 24 matches without taking a losing in the Premier League, a mark equal to the club's best-ever run in a top-flight season. Jose Mourinho's side pulled level with a mark set by Sir Alex Ferguson's team in the 2010-11 season.

While Mourinho's side is on a nice run, it's worth noting that the Ferguson United side won the league by nine points that season, while the current club is in a scap just to finish in the top four.

A 0-0 draw with Manchester City in Thursday's derby match left United in fifth place, a single point back of City.

'It's a point gained' - Carrick content with result after Manchester derby draw

    michaelcarrick-cropped_10014utgek5nf1db1tj9e0igdr.jpg

Michael Carrick says Manchester United should look upon their 0-0 draw with Manchester City as a point gained in the race for Champions League qualification.

United produced a defensively solid display to keep City at bay at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday, their efforts doubled after Marouane Fellaini was shown a straight red card for headbutting Sergio Aguero in the 84th minute.

Jose Mourinho's side had chances through Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Ander Herrera in the first half, but were far less attacking in the second and had to withstand significant late pressure.Carrick, selected in midfield in place of the injured Paul Pogba, took the result as a positive, with United remaining one point behind City in fifth position."It's a point gained for us," he told Sky Sports.

"We would have loved to come here and won the game and we thought we could catch City on the break.

"We did have a couple of chances but we obviously had to defend for large spells in the game, but I thought overall we did that very well, apart from at the end when there was a bit of excitement and a bit of a flurry, but we saw the game out well.

"It makes things more difficult when you go down to 10 men. I know there wasn't too long left but when six minutes go up it's an awful long time to see out. We were intelligent and done it well.

"It's tight up there where we are and it's a point we can take from the game and move on."A lot of people made out that it was between us and City [for the top four] but it's a bigger picture than that at the moment. We're in a decent position but there's a lot of work to do."

Mourinho expects Man City to finish in top four

    mourinhoguardiola-cropped_1kkyh8qok9gj81xo20gas9lw0x.jpg

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes rivals City will finish in the top four in the Premier League.Thursday's derby finished in a dull 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium as United held on for a point after Marouane Fellaini's 84th-minute red card.

The draw could be vital for United, who are fifth but just two points behind third-placed Liverpool and with a game in hand.

With Chelsea and Tottenham clear at the top, Liverpool (66 points, 34 games), City (65, 33), United (64, 33) and Arsenal (60, 32) are fighting for a top-four finish.

"I think Man City are going to finish top four, I think the matches they have to play, I see them doing that," Mourinho said."I think it's between us, Arsenal and Liverpool and we are going to try.

"But the reality is we have a European semi-final [in the Europa League against Celta Vigo] to play."We have lots of problems with players and we go with what is possible but we are going to fight until it's mathematically not possible."United host Swansea City on Sunday before a trip to Spain for the first leg of their Celta Vigo tie on Thursday.

Ramos open to presidential role at Real Madrid

    sergioramos-cropped_ekz82rnazu191mnhaopdgk57r.jpg

Sergio Ramos is open to the idea of becoming Real Madrid president in the future but the captain is focused on seeing out his career at the European champions.

Ramos took part in a Q&A with his fans on Twitter to celebrate 10 million followers on the social media platform and the inspirational centre-back was posed a range of questions on Thursday.A presidential role was floated to the three-time LaLiga winner and two-time Champions League medallist.

When asked if he would like to be Madrid president, 31-year-old Ramos responded: "Ha ha ha ha, you never know, but at the moment I do not see myself [in that role]."

The prospect of coaching after his playing days are over also came up in the Q&A and Spain international Ramos - under contract until 2020 - did not rule out stepping into the dugout in Madrid, where he was won 13 major honours."There is still a lot of time and there is nothing decided but it is an option," he added.

"There are a few seasons left, but… I would love to retire in Madrid ... We'll see!"
Ramos was suspended for Madrid's 6-2 victory over Deportivo La Coruna on Wednesday after being sent off in last week's last-gasp Clasico defeat at home to Barcelona.

The veteran defender is set to return for Saturday's visit of Valencia as Madrid look to stay level with titleholders Barca atop the table.
