TATA Slave Island housing project kicks off

Secretary Defence and Urban Development Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday kicked off the proposed commercial and residential complex at Slave Island, Colombo 2, as the Chief Guest. He participated at the ground-breaking ceremony along with senior officials of the project’s developer, Tata of India. In keeping with tradition, the Defence Secretary cut the first sod of soil with the blessings of the Maha Sangha and other religious dignitaries. The project will be executed by the Urban Development Authority in collaboration with the TATA Housing Development Company Ltd. of India. The housing complex will be built on an eight acre plot in Slave Island encompassing Malay Street from the east, Justice Akbar Street from the south, the railway track from the west and the land used by the Ministry of education from the north. The primary goal of the project is to uplift the living standard of the people in the area and providing them a better living environment thereby improving the liveability of the city.

IOC, Ceylon Petroleum set to form JV

The Indian co will submit a proposal on the JV structure

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) are set to form a joint venture (JV) for taking up various initiatives in the oil and gas sector, including supply of LNG to Sri Lanka by Petronet LNG Limited (PLL) to feed power plants in that country.

The decision to form the joint venture was taken following a meeting between the Petroleum Secretary, Vivek Rae, and the Ministry of Finance and Planning and Secretary, Ministry of Economic Development, Sri Lanka, P. B. Jayasundara, recently. Seeking to put the co-operation in the oil and gas sector on the fast track, the government has asked IOC to formalise a proposal within this month, and submit the same to CPC to facilitate further discussions.

While acknowledging that there were pending issues of Lanka IOC, the Sri Lankan side suggested that the best way forward was to carry the initiative for enhancing co-operation between the two countries. It was decided during the meeting that IOC would submit a comprehensive proposal on the structure of the proposed JV that would address all concerns of IOC.

Shangri-La breaks ground on Sri Lankan soil

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts yesterday broke ground for its first ever hotel project in Sri Lanka, the US$ 550 million Shangri-La Colombo, on a land overlooking the Galle Face Green promenade. This was followed by the ground breaking ceremony for their US$ 150 million Hambantota Resort and Spa in the Sirakala Estate in Hambantota today.

The Group, which announced its purchase of 10 acres of Government land in Colombo last January, expects the hotel to be ready for occupation by end 2015, Shangri-La Asia Executive Director Madhu Ramachandra Rao said.
