Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews’ fitness will be assessed today (Friday) during training ahead of their first Champions Trophy game against South Africa at The Oval on Saturday.
"Scans have shown a little strain on the same calf that he had an earlier injury. At this stage he will be around 70 percent of playing on Saturday. We will assess him on Friday and then decide what to do," Sri Lanka’s Cricket Manager Asanka Gurusinha told ‘The Island’.
Sri Lanka has been focusing a lot on fielding after poor fielding efforts cost them dearly during the bilateral series against Bangladesh. Gurusinha was hopeful the hard work put in to raise fielding standards will pay off.
"Fielding has improved a lot. We have done a lot of hard work. Nic Pothas, our Fielding Coach has done a lot of work on fielding. The Sri Lankan public will see a certain improvement in that discipline. We have to be consistent though."
The team’s batting looks settled ahead of the tournament. Dinesh Chandimal is expected to bat at number four and Gurusinha said that he had been given responsibility to bat longer.
"Chandi is batting well. We have given him a responsibility and we don’t want him to get a fifty and then get out. He is our number four batsmen and we want him get that big hundred. He is a fine player. We have been talking to him about finishing things off," Gurusinha added. Sri Lanka’s other opponents in Group ‘B’ are India and Pakistan. The game against India will be played at The Oval on the 8th June and Pakistan on the 12th June.
