Was thinking of leaving something like Harpic in the toilet always to discourage any rat from doing the final dive through the S trap in the commode. But was worried about splashing say when kids use the toilet. Leaving something like what you mention may not be so bad on skin contact and still discourage the rats. thanks.

Thanks that is a good idea.
I was first thinking of the type of no return valves used in water mains.
But was worried about clogging over time for black water lines (sewage).
I must see about a one way valve you mentioned, perhaps like in link from @HSW...

Rats can dive in the water?

According to the National Geographic video, they can hold the breath under water for about 3 minutes
I thought the water seal in the commode would prevent. But I was wrong.
