This is common for all. Both government and private sector provide halfpay and nopay leaves for their female employees. And when you have a baby you will realize that how important it is to have leaves for the first six months.

I don't get it. Six months is a long time for someone to take care of a baby.

pardon me for asking... Why would she need 6 months. That means the infant is 6 months old right? Why would any mother spend half a year as a maternity purpose.

    Why wouldn't she?
    1. What if there are no one to look after your baby while you guys are working?
    2. Babies needs to breast feed for at least 1 year as doctors say. So if you are living in far from your work place, How does your wife feed your baby? I agree that you can feed baby milk. But feeding breast milk is highly recommend for the growth of the child. Thatz what every parent want.
3.We are living in a country where traveling is damn hard. So most of the time your wife won't be able to be there with the baby.

This may not be applicable for all. But for most of people get the benefits out of this. In the mean time read below article.

Still I don't get the point. Noway a person can stay six month for a sole purpose of a baby.. I think this is the reason Sri Lanka's young generation still depend on their parents, no matter what.
